The Impact Of Provider Beliefs, Perceptions And Practices On Advance Care Planning Conversations In Seriously Ill Patients, Kelly A. Bouthillet
The Impact Of Provider Beliefs, Perceptions And Practices On Advance Care Planning Conversations In Seriously Ill Patients, Kelly A. Bouthillet
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
For clinicians, discussions that focus on life-sustaining procedures and interventions is often easier than partaking in conversations that provoke feelings of inadequacy or uncertainty. This may result in patient-provider miscommunication about end of life preferences and goals of care. The focus of this translational research and clinical project was to examine provider barriers to practice and to implement a structured communication tool using the Serious Illness Conversation Guide when engaging patients and family in advance care planning and goals of care discussions. Previous research has indicated that many clinicians lack formal education and confidence in end of life care discussions. …

Understanding Women's Experiences With Women-Only Leadership Development Programs In Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Approach, Danielle Marie Geary
Understanding Women's Experiences With Women-Only Leadership Development Programs In Higher Education: A Mixed Methods Approach, Danielle Marie Geary
Dissertations (1934 -)
Previous research indicated that women’s advancement into the leadership and administrative ranks in higher education has stalled over the past twenty years. Studies highlighted the socio-cultural and structural barriers that create challenges for women’s advancement in the academy. This study focused on the use of women-only leadership development programs (WLDPs) as a potential resource for women in the pursuit of advancing their careers. Few research studies to date assess the outcome for women who have attended WLDPs. This study was an in-depth case study of the Women in Higher Education Leadership Summit (WHELS) held at the University of San Diego, …

A Life Full Of Challenges: Exploring The Stressors And Coping Strategies Of Emerging Adult Undergraduate Student Parents, Kaleb C. Esplin
A Life Full Of Challenges: Exploring The Stressors And Coping Strategies Of Emerging Adult Undergraduate Student Parents, Kaleb C. Esplin
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Stress is a natural part of life. However, there are some demographics which experience stress at heightened levels due to their circumstances, making them more prone to negative consequences. One such demographic is emerging adult undergraduate student parents (EAUSPs). Research on highly stressed demographics allows for the creation of programs and strategies to aid them. Unfortunately, research on EAUSPs is very scarce, making supporting them difficult. This study sought to understand the stresses which EAUSPs identify being prevalent in their lives along with coping strategies which they have found to be effective. To do so, interviews were conducted with 12 …

Changing Student Behaviour In Schools Located In Areas Of Socioeconomic Deprivation: Findings From The 'Coastal Academies' Research, Ra Passy, T Ovenden-Hope
Plymouth Institute of Education
Ofsted (Ofsted, 2013; see also Weale, 2014), the government regulator of standards in education for England, identified a link between student performance and ‘deprived coastal towns’, with a realisation that these areas have ‘felt little impact from national initiatives designed to drive up the standards for the poorest children’ (Ofsted, 2013). Having recognised locality as factor in school performance in research undertaken on coastal academies in 2010 (a longitudinal study of one coastal secondary (school age 11-18) academy) extensions to the research resulted in a comparative analysis of six underperforming coastal secondary schools that had converted to academy status by …

Caitlin Silver Porter (’14) majored in biology at Gardner-Webb University as a stepping stone to medical school. She minored in mission studies, because of her heart for ministry. A course that explored issues in science and religion helped to connect her two interests.
