Liturgy That Cares, Howard Vanderwell Jan 2016

Liturgy That Cares, Howard Vanderwell

Symposium on Worship Archive

Some call it the “preliminaries,” some hastily put it together, and others have very elaborate liturgies. This sectional is built on the conviction that it’s time to take a thorough new look at the pastoral power of the order of worship. We will try to identify the needs worshipers bring to church, and we’ll examine the liturgy with an eye to finding the best ways to meet those needs. Our goal is the development of liturgies that join with the sermon in providing pastoral care.

Indigni Et Peccatoris Verbum: Christian Identity In The Epistula Severi, Mark Pearsall Jan 2016

Indigni Et Peccatoris Verbum: Christian Identity In The Epistula Severi, Mark Pearsall

Doctoral Dissertations

The Epistula Severi provides an account of the conversion of the Jews on the island of Minorca in February, 418. According to the letter, the Christians were inflamed with religious fervor as a result of the arrival of certain relics of St. Stephen the Protomartyr shortly earlier. As a result, they rallied under the leadership of their bishop, Severus, and attempted to engage the Jews of Magona, the primary city on the island, in a debate and convince them to join the Christian church. The Jews, according to Severus, refused to debate and began stockpiling weapons to defend themselves against …

Commuting Versus Resident Students: Differences In Irish Student Engagement, Social And Living Conditions Based On Place Of Residence, Brian Gormley Jan 2016

Commuting Versus Resident Students: Differences In Irish Student Engagement, Social And Living Conditions Based On Place Of Residence, Brian Gormley

Support services (Former ITT) - Other Resources

This is the first study into resident students and commuter students in Ireland and was carried out to facilitate a more informed and targeted approach to supporting specific student groups. The research is based on secondary data analysis of three national Eurostudent surveys undertaken in 2006, 2009 and 2013. Four different student cohorts were studied to examine differences in their living and social conditions and their levels of student engagement. The cohorts were: resident students; those living with their parents; renters; and home-owners. Much of the previous research into student residential arrangements has taken place in the US, and this …

The Cebu International Eucharistic Congress: Its Missionary Challenges, James H. Kroeger Jan 2016

The Cebu International Eucharistic Congress: Its Missionary Challenges, James H. Kroeger

Landas

This paper outlines five mission themes from the 51st International Eucharistic Congress in Cebu. First, it presents dialogue as the essential mode of mission within Asia's multicultural reality. Second, it explores the inculturation of the Christian faith among diverse Asian peoples. Third, it examines interreligious dialogue aimed at mutually respectful encounters. Fourth, it addresses mission with the poor, urging the Church to embrace simplicity and dismantle unjust structures. Finally, it highlights dialogue with the youth, emphasizing pastoral care in a region containing sixty percent of the world's young population. Together, these themes form a comprehensive framework for contemporary Asian evangelization.

Coram Deo Et Coram Mundo: The Two Kinds Of Righteousness As A Normative Framework For The Description, Interpretation, And Healing Of Shame, Barson Lahivelo Mahafaly Jan 2016

Coram Deo Et Coram Mundo: The Two Kinds Of Righteousness As A Normative Framework For The Description, Interpretation, And Healing Of Shame, Barson Lahivelo Mahafaly

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

Contemporary pastoral theologians, though describing and interpreting shame from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing both from theology and psychology, tend to propose healing for shame only from a theological perspective. Transposing Martin Luther’s doctrine of the two kinds of righteousness into an interdisciplinary framework, this work proposes that pastoral theologians need to describe and interpret shame as well as suggest strategies for its healing from both theological and social-scientific perspectives.

Luther distinguishes between two kinds of righteousness, one passive and the other active. Passive righteousness is the righteousness of Christ bequeathed to us through the Word and the Sacraments (baptism and …

Relational Pastoral Care And Counseling: A Practical Theological Exploration Of Relational Spirituality And Grief, Joel A. Jueckstock Jan 2016

Relational Pastoral Care And Counseling: A Practical Theological Exploration Of Relational Spirituality And Grief, Joel A. Jueckstock

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

What is the relationship between relational spirituality and grief? This dissertation pursues this question by employing a practical theological method for practitioners of pastoral care and counseling when tending to unique grief experiences. Grief is understood in terms of contemporary bereavement science. Relational spirituality is developed as an interdisciplinary, interpretive lens with the capacity to describe how individuals relate to the sacred in light of four dimensions: human-human, human-God, God-human, and inner Trinitarian. The outworking of these dimensions suggests a relational approach to interdisciplinary dialogue. Applying relational spirituality to individuals’ unique grief experiences produces a process of care for tending …

Transforming Narratives Through “Live”: A Pastoral Model Of Care For Women In Sex Work, Nkiruka Okafor Ihm

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This work, “Transforming Narratives Through “Live”: A Pastoral Model of Care for Women in Sex Work,” seeks to provide the Church with a pastoral response from the narratives of the women doing sex work as streetwalkers in Nigeria. The work uses the four steps of practical theological model of Rick Osmer to describe, interpret, theologize, and strategize on pastoral care of women in sex work. The literature review, both descriptive and interpretive, examines the perception of agency as exercised by the women in sex work through the work of scholars, writings by women in sex industry, the different pastoral models …

Evaluation Of A Brief, School-Based Bullying Bystander Intervention For Elementary School Students, Aida Midgett, Diana Doumas, Rhiannon Trull

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study evaluated a brief, bystander bullying intervention for elementary school students. Students in the intervention group reported an increase in knowledge and confidence to act as “defenders.” Students in the intervention group also reported an increase in self-esteem relative to the control group, although this finding was limited to sixth-grade students. The study found no group differences in sense of school belonging. This article discusses implications for school counselors.
