Conceptualizing And Validating The Character Virtues Index (Cvi), Mark Allen Liston
Conceptualizing And Validating The Character Virtues Index (Cvi), Mark Allen Liston
Dissertations
Can a valid, reliable measure of multi-dimensional adolescent character be developed? Goals were: 1) To construct a grid of trait lists by experts in Positive Psychology (PP), Character Education (CE), and Positive Youth Development (PYD) to create the Character Taxonomy as a conceptual basis; 2) to construct the Character Virtues Index (CVI) as a brief measure of the taxonomy’s traits; and 3) to validate CVI. The Character Taxonomy produced 18 traits that were hypothesized to cover the various dimensions of character. Two CVI field tests produced a reliable measure with 11 factors for a validation study. The validation study of …

Formulating An Intentional Curriculum For Spiritual Leadership Development At The West University Church Of Christ, Daniel A. Mcgraw
Formulating An Intentional Curriculum For Spiritual Leadership Development At The West University Church Of Christ, Daniel A. Mcgraw
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This project addresses the lack of a formal curriculum for spiritual leadership formation in the West University Church of Christ in Houston, Texas. While the West University Church of Christ has been blessed by strong congregational leaders in both the past and present, recent conversations revealed the need for a deeper connection to God and a better understanding of spiritual leadership on the part of the congregation’s leaders. The problem I identified was a lack of understanding about spiritual leadership in contrast to secular understandings of leadership and the lack of a formal curriculum to help address this problem.

Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein
Holiness Unto Whom? John Wesley’S Doctrine Of Entire Sanctification In Light Of The Two Kinds Of Righteousness, John Trinklein
Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation
It is the thesis of this dissertation that Wesley’s “distinctive doctrine” of ‘entire sanctification’—indeed, his entire ordo salutis—is predicated upon a different theological starting point than Luther. Furthermore, Wesley used this vantage point to address a different set of issues than those that faced the Reformer. But while the spiritual torpor and moral decay of eighteenth century England truly were deplorable conditions which needed to be addressed, Wesley’s different starting point led both to some unintended theological consequences and to his misunderstanding Luther’s theology regarding sanctification.
Burnout Among Pastors In Local Church Ministry In Relation To Pastor, Congregation Member, And Church Organizational Outcomes, Crystal Mary Burnette
Burnout Among Pastors In Local Church Ministry In Relation To Pastor, Congregation Member, And Church Organizational Outcomes, Crystal Mary Burnette
All Dissertations
Based on the empirical literature, popular press, and personal testimonies, burnout is a reality for many pastors (Doolittle, 2010; Randall, 2013). Burnout and exhaustion among pastors pose a threat to local church health and ministry vitality (Miner, Dowson, & Sterland, 2010). Existing research has focused almost exclusively on individual and job-related variables in an effort to predict pastor job burnout. The current dissertation addressed the lack of understanding regarding pastor job burnout as it relates to pastor health, congregation member, and church organizational outcomes. Specifically, the current dissertation examined the relationships between pastor job burnout and a) pastor physical and …

Using World Café Methodology For Affective Change, Stephen Rynearson
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Rynearson, Stephen P. “Using World Café Methodology for Affective Change” D.MIN MAP., Concordia Seminary, 2016. pp.142.
The purpose of this MAP is to evaluate the usefulness of using the “World Café” methodology in changing attitudes. In particular, the participants went through a World Café to see if any change was made from the previous apathetic service to the Lord into a joyful service. Also tested was the usefulness of the World Café methodology for congregational decision making.
Among the topics discussed are: what constitutes joyful service in the Scriptures; what other means are often used in making decisions; and how …

Behold, She Stands At The Door: Reentry, Black Women And The Black Church, Kathryn V. Stanley
Behold, She Stands At The Door: Reentry, Black Women And The Black Church, Kathryn V. Stanley
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This paper examines the African American church’s response to the special problems of African American women who reenter the community post-incarceration. The first portion of the paper examines the impact of criminal justice policies on women of color and the attending problems of reentry which resulted. It then surveys the black church’s response to returning citizens, especially women. It concludes by proposing shifts in perspectives and theologies which create barriers to successful reintegration into the community at large, and the church in particular. The intended audience is individuals and faith communities who seek to work effectively with returning women.

Optimizing Diabetes Self-Management Outcomes In Low-Income Ethnic Minority Patients In The United States, Diane C. Berry, Wanda M. Williams
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Monday, July 25, 2016:
Purpose: In 2013, approximately 382 million people over the age of 20 years were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and it is estimated that by 2035 that number will increase to 592 million worldwide (1). The majority of patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes do not receive consistent medical care and education about the disease process and do not maintain good glycemic control (2,3). Poor glycemic control leads to microvascular and macrovascular complications (2). The purpose of this randomized controlled pilot study was to develop and test an interdisciplinary approach to diabetes self-management …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:
Background: A competent workforce committed to providing patient-centered care is vital since retention and turnover rates of direct care staff in skilled nursing facilities are directly related to quality of patient care (Austrom et al, 2015). Turnover and retention rates can become extremely challenged when a workforce is in crisis. Following the 2010 devastating earthquake in Haiti, 31 skilled nursing facilities in Florida and Georgia actively engaged in providing support to Haitian employees and their families both in USA and Haiti. Administrators, leaders and line staff participated in the support and relief efforts …

Residents at most institutions change rotations every 2 to 4 weeks. It often takes significant time for residents to become acclimated to the different protocols, expectations, and environments of each unique rotation. As a result, residents often spend time searching for answers, time that could be spent in outside learning and direct patient care. The goal of this resource is to provide a novel guidebook that improves residents’ efficiency and knowledge of best patient care practices. The guidebook begins with an introductory chapter with …

Divinity Students Become First Gwu Group To Study In Cuba, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Seven students from Gardner-Webb University made history in May as the first group from the School of Divinity to travel and study in Cuba. Led by Dr. Hebert Palomino, associate professor of pastoral care and counseling, the group visited several places, including the Baptist seminary in Santiago de Cuba, where Palomino helped to establish a counseling program. “The highlight for me was the opportunity to attend services in different churches,” Rowena Casino, of Boiling Springs, N.C., shared.

Training Elementary School Students To Intervene As Peer-Advocates To Stop Bullying At School: A Pilot Study, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
The prevalence of bullying among children has prompted the development of school- based programs to address this problem. This pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of a brief, standalone bystander bullying program for elementary school students. The purpose to the program was to train students to take action as peer-advocates. After completing the 75-minute program, students reported an increase in their ability to identify what different types of bullying look like, knowledge of bystander intervention strategies, and general confidence intervening as peer-advocates. Furthermore, fifth grade students showed the greatest response to the program. Implications for school counselors as leaders in program …
