Embracing A Culture Of Evidence: A Phenomenological Study Of Faculty Experience Within A Transitioning Assessment Culture, Jennifer A. Galipeau Apr 2016

Embracing A Culture Of Evidence: A Phenomenological Study Of Faculty Experience Within A Transitioning Assessment Culture, Jennifer A. Galipeau

All Theses And Dissertations

This phenomenological study sought to give voice to the lived experiences of faculty within a transitioning assessment culture at an institution of higher education accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools (NEASC). Current literature concerning outcomes assessment (OA) in higher education is highly focused on the need for campuses to foster a robust and pervasive culture around assessment, often termed a culture of evidence. The study site provided a unique opportunity to examine this phenomenon as it was at the mid-point of a multi-year initiative focused on transforming institutional assessment culture. During the study, full-time faculty at …

Improving Student Achievement Of Private School Students Receiving Title Services: A Positional And Dispositional Change Plan, Dr Shandowlyon L. Hendricks-Williams

Dissertations

This change plan examined the current competencies, conditions, culture and context of a for-profit education corporation which resulted in low student achievement, “As Is”. As a means of developing strategies and actions for change, the competencies, conditions, culture and context necessary to increase student achievement was explored “To Be”. A change plan was developed and implemented. The change plan addressed my personal immunities to change as well as strategies and actions needed to improve student achievement. Private school students receiving title services were assessed using the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test in May of 2014. The results of that …

Ad Hoc American Studies: Michigan And The Hidden History Of A Movement, Alexander I. Olson, Frank Kelderman Apr 2016

Ad Hoc American Studies: Michigan And The Hidden History Of A Movement, Alexander I. Olson, Frank Kelderman

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This essay uses the history of the American Culture program at the University of Michigan as an occasion for rethinking the early years of American Studies more generally. Our archival research has found that the program was founded in 1935—seventeen years earlier than previously thought—making it the oldest American Studies degree program in the world. These forgotten years challenge conventional genealogies tracing the field’s origins to the “myth and symbol” school at Harvard. Instead, Michigan’s history reveals a deep engagement with interdisciplinary movements in the 1930s that shared an interest in critiquing American democracy, particularly human ecology, institutionalist economics, and …

Principals’ Experiences Adapting To A New State-Mandated Administrator Evaluation Process: A Phenomenological Study, Kathleen Ann Teed Ramirez

Dissertations

In the early stages of Michigan’s enactment of new educator evaluation statutory requirements, there is an opportunity to examine the readiness of Michigan’s principals to adapt to the new evaluation models and processes by engaging a sample of administrators who are in the process of adapting to both new teacher and new administrator evaluations. We can potentially get out in front of emerging patterns of impeding factors and reinforce enabling factors that impact the adaptation and transition process and impinge upon the potential for enactment of new educator evaluation models and processes to actually result in acceleration of the growth …

Big Data Sustainability: An Environmental Management Systems Analogy, Dennis D. Hirsch, Jonathan H. King

Washington and Lee Law Review Online

Today, organizations globally wrestle with how to extract valuable insights from diverse data sets without invading privacy, causing discrimination, harming their brand, or otherwise undermining the sustainability of their big data projects. Leaders in these organizations are thus asking: What management approach should businesses employ sustainably to achieve the tremendous benefits of big data analytics, while minimizing the potential negative externalities?

This Paper argues that leaders can learn from environmental management practices developed to manage the negative externalities of the industrial revolution. First, it shows that, along with its many benefits, big data can create negative externalities that are structurally …

The release of findings from the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's landmark simulation study (Hayden, et al., 2014) may be the catalyst to further increase use of simulation as results showed that up to 50% of clinical time could be replaced with simulation if specific conditions were met. This may be a crucial part of the answer to the ongoing challenges of lack of adequate clinical sites, …

A "Big Bang" Versus A "Small Bang" Approach: A Case Study Of The Expeditionary Combat Support System (Ecss) And The Maintenance, Repair, And Overhaul Initiative (Mroi), George B. Lafiguera

Theses and Dissertations

In 2003, the United States Air Force embarked on one of the largest and most comprehensive logistical transformation to delineate the logistics community’s strategy for supporting the warfighter. A key aspect of this campaign plan was to leverage information technology through an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution called the Expeditionary Combat Support System (ECSS), a “big-bang” approach. In early 2012, the ECSS program was cancelled mainly due to uncontrollable increases in costs and schedule overruns. In late 2012, the Air Force Sustainment Center (AFSC) launched the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul initiative (MROi), a “small-bang” approach, to increase enterprise visibility and …

Adjunct Faculty Sensemaking In The Context Of A Student Success Initiative At A Community College, Denise-Marie Coulter Mar 2016

Adjunct Faculty Sensemaking In The Context Of A Student Success Initiative At A Community College, Denise-Marie Coulter

Theses and Dissertations

Now that community colleges are being pressured by external forces to improve student completion and transfer rates, it is important to determine how part-time faculty are conceptualizing change and implementing it in their practice. They comprise the majority of the teaching staff at these schools, so they are a vital component to ensuring comprehensive change. I undertook an embedded case study to examine how adjunct faculty teaching a gateway English course make sense of the shift in mission to emphasize one school’s commitment to improving student success and whether or not their understanding of this change is impacting their pedagogy. …

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015 and Sunday, November 8, 2015:

Background: Traditionally, mothers and babies are separated after birth. However, strong evidence exists that immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth between mother and baby has positive outcomes for both mother and baby. Babies who transition with their mothers have better breastfeeding rates and mothers who transition with their babies are more satisfied with the birthing process. Nonetheless, nurses are challenged daily with promoting skin-to-skin, especially after a cesarean delivery. West Kendall Baptist Hospital embarked on a journey to implement a change process of transitioning all eligible newborns at the …

A World View Of Person And Family Centered Care, Joanne Disch Mar 2016

A World View Of Person And Family Centered Care, Joanne Disch

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Tuesday, November 10, 2015:

Although substantial work is being done in many countries to advance the concept of person and family-centered care, there is no universal definition that has been adopted. The international Alliance of Patients' Organizations (2007, p. 2) uses the term patient-centred healthcare to "describe healthcare that is designed and practiced with the patient at the centre." However it has become clear over the past 20 years that this definition can encompass working with, doing for or doing to - with patients and their families having little say in the design, delivery or evaluation of …

Family In The Resuscitation Room: Polish And Finnish Nurses' Experience And Attitudes Towards Family-Witnessed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation In A Hospital Setting, Natalia Sak-Dankosky, Pawel Andruszkiewica, Paula R. Sherwood, Tarja Kvist

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:

Background: Family-witnessed resuscitation offers an option for patients' families to be present during in-hospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It represents principles of the Family-Centered Care Theory which recognizes needs of family members and emphasizes their important role in patients' health and sickness. Due to the research suggesting possible benefits of family-witnessed resuscitation (Clark et al. 2013), many nursing and medical organizations, such as Emergency Nurses Association, European Resuscitation Council and American Heart Association, have officially recommended this practice. There is evidence that while in some countries family-witnessed resuscitation is accepted and implemented, there are …

Taking Charge: Engaging Patients As Full Partners, Mary Walton Mar 2016

Taking Charge: Engaging Patients As Full Partners, Mary Walton

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on Tuesday, November 10, 2015:

A growing body of evidence demonstrates that improving the patient experience and developing partnerships with patients/families correlates with improved health outcomes. Patients who are more involved in their care are better able to: manage complex chronic conditions, seek appropriate assistance, have reduced lengths of stay, avoid readmissions and emergency department visits, and experience increased satisfaction. To achieve this, health care professionals need to engage patients and families in partnered relationships, and equip them with the relevant information, resources, access and support to fully engage in and/or direct their health care experience. This includes …

Evidence-Based Leaders And Leadership, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk Mar 2016

Evidence-Based Leaders And Leadership, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Today's healthcare environment is increasingly complex and ever changing. Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been identified as a critical requirement to achieve the Triple Aim in healthcare. Although it is well established that evidence-based practice (EBP) improves healthcare quality and patient outcomes as well as reduces morbidities, mortality, medical errors, and costs of healthcare services, it is not standard practice by the majority health professionals in healthcare systems. Many healthcare providers, across the care continuum, continue to deliver care based upon tradition, outdated policies and procedures, and information learned years ago in their educational programs. It is essential for healthcare organizations …
