Service has no boundaries. A warm smile and a hug can spread love. Last summer, a group of university students decided to take a step out of Hong Kong to serve the unknown. During the service trip, they came across touching stories, encountered turmoil, traveled alone in unfamiliar countries and gained valuable knowledge. All these challenges and hardships are now precious memories that add meaning to their lives.

Let’s walk with them on their paths through Indonesia, Kenya, Egypt, Taiwan and other places, to feel and experience their exciting, yet touching stories.

Metro Meals On Wheels Treasure Valley Employs A Low-Cost Routing Tool To Improve Deliveries, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes, Thomas F. Gattiker

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we discuss a project in which we developed a spreadsheet-based system that interfaces with a no-fee driving-directions application programming interface to quickly and accurately build a travel time and distance matrix and then rapidly determine near-optimal delivery-route schedules using a modified genetic algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, the method we used to create the travel matrix had not been employed previously in an academic study. The tool was tested and refined in a humanitarian setting—a local branch of the Meals on Wheels Association of America (now Meals on Wheels America), an organization that combats hunger …

Implementing A Minimally Invasive Approach, Diana V. Macri Mar 2016

Implementing A Minimally Invasive Approach, Diana V. Macri

Publications and Research

The World Health Organization notes that 60% to 90% of children and nearly 100% of adults have a history of dental caries. The caries process begins with the action of organic acids, which are produced by bacteria found in organized dental plaque via the anaerobic metabolism of dietary sugars. When this dental plaque goes undisturbed, organic acids may initiate the early stages of demineralization. Demineralization gradually weakens the tooth structure, making it more susceptible to plaque formation and demineralization. Remineralization is the process by which the damage to these surfaces is repaired by replacing surface minerals utilizing therapies such as …

Corporate Agricultural Investment And The Right To Food: Addressing Disparate Protections And Promoting Rights-Consistent Outcomes, Kaitlin Y. Cordes, Anna Bulman

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

Over the past decade, the world has witnessed heightened corporate interest in large-scale land-based agricultural investment. While such investments can potentially have positive effects for local communities, they also can have wide-ranging negative impacts on human rights, including through forced displacement and the loss of livelihoods. This Article examines the impact of large-scale corporate agricultural investment on the right to food, as well as on human rights more generally. It considers the protections offered by the investment and human rights legal regimes to both corporations and individuals, including recent international developments relating to transnational corporate accountability and efforts to integrate …

Transparency In Land-Based Investment: Key Questions And Next Steps, Columbia Center On Sustainable Investment

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

Large-scale investments in agriculture and forestry are often shrouded in secrecy. In many cases, they are negotiated without the involvement of affected communities, approved through opaque decision-making procedures, and governed by legal agreements that are difficult both to access and to understand. This systemic lack of transparency impedes accountability and exacerbates ongoing disagreements about the real costs and benefits for investors, host countries, and their citizens.

Jointly authored by CCSI and the Open Contracting Partnership, this briefing note examines why contract disclosure and a contracting process that is open, accessible, and inclusive are important; what such transparency entails; and how …

Taking A Closer Look At Campus Civic Health: Are We Measuring Dutiful Or Actualized Citizenship On Campus?, Adam Van Liere, Jeremy Arney, Jo Arney

eJournal of Public Affairs

As participants in the Campus and Community Civic Health Initiative, the authors used National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) measures to gauge civic health on their campus. By embedding their research study in a capstone class, they were able to interview representatives of student organizations, faculty, and campus offices regarding activities in the areas covered by the indicators. These indicators include activities such as volunteering, group membership and participation, using the Internet to educate about community issues, serving as a liaison with the community, to name a few. The study uncovered a strong civic campus culture, but the results were seemingly …

Nigeria: The Matrix Between Fragility Of Livelihoods And Conflict, Abiodun Odusote Mar 2016

Nigeria: The Matrix Between Fragility Of Livelihoods And Conflict, Abiodun Odusote

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

In recent times, there has been an increased outbreak of conflicts across the globe, particularly in areas experiencing livelihood fragility. Available literature suggests that in a society where livelihoods are threatened, minimal, or non-existent, the people are generally more overwhelmed and prone to violence and conflict. This paper consolidates the available literature on livelihoods and conflict, with the aim of identifying the nexus between the two concepts. The author particularly interrogates the matrix between fragility of livelihoods and armed conflicts, with emphasis on Boko Haram and the Niger Delta conflicts. The article notes that there seems to be a large …

The Application Of Geospatial Analytical Techniques In The Assessment Of Land Use Conflicts Among Farmers And Cross-Boundary Nomadic Cattle Herders In The Gombe Region, Nigeria, Whanda J. Shittu, Mala Galtima, Dan Yakubu Mar 2016

The Application Of Geospatial Analytical Techniques In The Assessment Of Land Use Conflicts Among Farmers And Cross-Boundary Nomadic Cattle Herders In The Gombe Region, Nigeria, Whanda J. Shittu, Mala Galtima, Dan Yakubu

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

In Nigeria, many land use conflicts among the teeming rural agrarian communities in the northern parts of the country are often wrongly attributed to ethno-religious differences while ignoring the salient role environmental degradation, climate change, and urbanization play in exacerbating the conflicts. The two traditional farming groups (crop producers and cattle herders) that contribute immensely to the country’s food security are in constant conflict, thereby threatening sustainable agricultural production. The objective in this article is to investigate the nature and extent of land use changes in the Gombe region using geospatial analytical techniques and assess the implications on land conflicts. …

Pink And Dude Chefs: Impact Of A Nutrition And Culinary Education Program With Middle School Students In An Afterschool Setting, Jessie R. Bierlich-Wesch

Master's Theses

The epidemic of adolescent obesity has become one of the greatest public health concerns in the United States. Approximately 20.5% of adolescents of both sexes aged 12-19 years are considered obese. Higher rates of obesity are evident in ethnic minority and lower income status children with the highest prevalence among Hispanic/Latino and Black populations. The causes for obesity are multifactorial in nature and highlight disparities nationwide. These factors include socioeconomic status, education, environment, availability and access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and behavior patterns. Successful intervention methods that have reduced the impact of adolescent obesity have incorporated nutrition knowledge and …

Nigella Sativa And Its Active Constituent Thymoquinone In Oral Health, Safia A. Alattas, Fat’Heya M. Zahran, Shereen A. Turkistany

Saudi Medical Journal

In this review, we summarized published reports that investigated the role of Nigella sativa (NS) and its active constituent, thymoquinone (TQ) in oral health and disease management. The literature studies were preliminary and scanty, but the results revealed that black seed plants have a potential therapeutic effect for oral and dental diseases. Such results are encouraging for the incorporation of these plants in dental therapeutics and hygiene products. However, further detailed preclinical and clinical studies at the cellular and molecular levels are required to investigate the mechanisms of action of NS and its constituents, particularly TQ.

Effect Of Jet Lag On Postural Stability, Faisal M. Al Mubarak Mar 2016

Effect Of Jet Lag On Postural Stability, Faisal M. Al Mubarak

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Postural stability is essential in people’s daily life. Crossing time zones can disrupt our body clock and lead to jet lag. Some studies reported that jet lag affects human physical and cognitive functions. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, none of these studies examined the effects of jet lag on postural stability. Twenty-two healthy young adult males between 23 and 36 years of age who had a round trip flight planned between the United States and Saudi Arabia were recruited. Participants attended one preflight assessment and three post-flight assessments (within 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours). Participants were divided …

Nicu Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes: Effects Of Psychological Well-Being And Psychopathology, Kathleen H. Parker Mar 2016

Nicu Parental Mental Health And Infant Outcomes: Effects Of Psychological Well-Being And Psychopathology, Kathleen H. Parker

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Previous research has shown that having a child in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is stressful for parents and that parents of NICU infants exhibit higher levels of stress compared to parents of healthy infants (Carter, Mulder, & Darlow, 2007; MacDonald, 2007; Treyvaud et al., 2010). As a result of these high levels of stress, NICU parents are at risk for developing psychopathology. Studies have found correlations between parental psychopathology and lower scores on measures of psychological well-being such as self-acceptance and autonomy (Bhullar, Hine, & Phillips, 2014; Valiente et al., 2013). Additionally, research has indicated that some well-being …

Ectomycorrhizal Fungi Decompose Soil Organic Matter Using Oxidative Mechanisms Adapted From Saprotrophic Ancestors, Firoz Shah, César Nicolás, Johan Bentzer, Magnus Ellström, Mark Smits, Francois Rineau, Björn Canbäck, Dimitrios Floudas, Robert Carleer, Gerald Lackner, Jana Braesel, Dirk Hoffmeister, Bernard Henrissat, Dag Ahrén, Tomas Johansson, David S. Hibbett, Francis Martin, Per Persson, Anders Tunlid

Biology

Ectomycorrhizal fungi are thought to have a key role in mobilizing organic nitrogen that is trapped in soil organic matter (SOM). However, the extent to which ectomycorrhizal fungi decompose SOM and the mechanism by which they do so remain unclear, considering that they have lost many genes encoding lignocellulose-degrading enzymes that are present in their saprotrophic ancestors. Spectroscopic analyses and transcriptome profiling were used to examine the mechanisms by which five species of ectomycorrhizal fungi, representing at least four origins of symbiosis, decompose SOM extracted from forest soils. In the presence of glucose and when acquiring nitrogen, all species converted …

Parent Voices Revisited: American Indian Relationships With Schools, Catherine A. Herzog Mar 2016

Parent Voices Revisited: American Indian Relationships With Schools, Catherine A. Herzog

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study duplicated the survey research of Robinson-Zanartu and Majel-Dixon in their 1996 article "Parent Voices: American Indian Relationships with Schools" published in The Journal of American Indian Education. Two hypotheses were investigated in this study. The first hypothesis was that due to the increase in multicultural education training that teachers receive as pre-service teachers and in professional development, there would be an increase in Native American parent/community satisfaction with the schools that service their children. The second hypothesis was that due to this multicultural education training there would be a reduction in referrals of Native American students to …

The Effect Of Whole Body Vibration On Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage And Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness, Ryan Darin Magoffin Mar 2016

The Effect Of Whole Body Vibration On Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage And Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness, Ryan Darin Magoffin

Theses and Dissertations

Current scientific evidence suggests that when whole body vibration (WBV) is used as a warm-up prior to performing eccentric exercise, delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is mitigated and strength loss recovers faster. These benefits were observed primarily in nonresistance-trained individuals. The aim of this study was to determine if WBV could mitigate soreness and expedite strength recovery for resistance-trained individuals when used as a warm-up prior to eccentric exercise. Thirty resistance-trained males completed 300 maximal eccentric contractions of the quadriceps after warming up with (WBV) or without (CON) WBV. Both CON and WBV experienced significant isometric (27.8% and 30.5%, respectively) and …

Resilience And Internalizing Symptoms Among Adolescent Girls In Residential Treatment: An Evaluation Of Strong Teens, Luke Andrew Marvin Mar 2016

Resilience And Internalizing Symptoms Among Adolescent Girls In Residential Treatment: An Evaluation Of Strong Teens, Luke Andrew Marvin

Theses and Dissertations

Strong Teens is an evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum designed to target internalizing disorders by promoting emotional resilience and social competence. In this study, Strong Teens was implemented among 36 adolescent girls during group therapy in a residential treatment center (RTC). A non-equivalent, quasi-experimental wait-list control group design was used. The curriculum was evaluated by tracking the girls' social and emotional knowledge, internalizing symptoms, and resilience from the perspectives of the girls, group therapists, and a supervisor who was blind to the study. Although the results indicated that exposure to Strong Teens was not effective in increasing the …

Professionalism requires that doctors acknowledge their errors and figure out how to avoid making similar ones in the future. Over the last few decades, doctors have gotten better at acknowledging mistakes and apologizing to patients when a mistake happens. Such disclosure is especially complicated when one becomes aware of an error made by a colleague. We present a case in which consultant surgeons became aware that a colleague seemed to have made a serious error. Experts in surgery and bioethics comment on appropriate responses to this situation.
