The Mediterranean-Style Diet: Historical And Contemporary Perspectives, Basil H. Aboul-Enein
Health & Wellness Department Faculty Publications and Research
During the Greek Hellenistic Period, the concept of a healthy diet was associated with quality of life and wellbeing. The ancient Greeks recognized the importance of dietetics within the overall framework of health promotion and disease prevention to such an extent that various diseases were attributed to an ‘unhealthy’ diet and that dietary interventions were a means of treatment. In Homer’s classic The Iliad, Podalirius, one of the two physicians described in the epic, had a special interest in dietetics. Noted works by Hippocrates, Herodicus, Galen, and Plato cited nutritional concepts and its role in treating and preventing various diseases …

Nutrition And Helicobacter Pylori: Host Diet And Nutritional Immunity Influence Bacterial Virulence And Disease Outcome, Kathryn P. Haley, Jennifer A. Gaddy
Peer Reviewed Articles
Helicobacter pylori colonizes the stomachs of greater than 50% of the world’s human population making it arguably one of the most successful bacterial pathogens. Chronic H. pylori colonization results in gastritis in nearly all patients; however in a subset of people, persistent infection with H. pylori is associated with an increased risk for more severe disease outcomes including B-cell lymphoma of mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) and invasive adenocarcinoma. Research aimed at elucidating determinants that mediate disease progression has revealed genetic differences in both humans and H. pylori which increase the risk for developing gastric cancer. Furthermore, host diet and …

Extraction Conditions Of Polyphenol Oxidase From Banana Peel, Ghazi M. Aziz, Ali J. R. Al-Sa'ady
Baghdad Science Journal
Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) is an enzyme containing copper, presents in various fruits and vegetables. It is responsible for the browning reactions when the cells are damaged during handling. The best conditions for extraction of polyphenol oxidase from banana peel was by using an extraction buffer containing phosphate buffer (0.05 M, pH 7), 0.01 M ascorbic acid and 0.5% polyethylene glycol, with extraction ratio 1:4 (w:v) for one minute by using blender. The enzyme activity was measured spectrophotometrically at 425 nm. PPO was studied to prevent the browning of banana peel which results in the loss of their marketability. The aim …

The grain hardness, wet and dry gluten contents, protein and ash contents are determined in grains from different cultivars of wheat which are important in food products, either which are present in raw materials or in final products. Wheat is also a very important food raw material, and flour as the final product of milling. The importance of knowing the physical and chemical properties of wheat and flour is due to the determination of quality and kind of flour which is produced after the milling process. In this work, some physical and chemical properties of different wheat cultivars are determined …

Spectrophotometric Determination Of Chromium Using Indigo Carmine -Application In Various Samples, Najih H. Shekho, Hind A. Mahmoud
Baghdad Science Journal
A rapid, simple, and sensitive spectrophotometric method for determining trace amounts of chromium was studied. The method is based on the interaction of chromium with indigo carmine dye in acidic medium, with oxalates acting as a catalyst. The resulting bleaching of the dye is directly proportional to chromium(VI) concentration, measured at 610 nm. A plot of absorbance vs. chromium(VI) concentration obeys Beer’s law over the range of 0.5-70 μg/25 mL (0.02-2.8 ppm), with a molar absorptivity of 1.71 × 10^4 L·mol^-1·cm^-1 and Sandell’s sensitivity index of 0.0030 μg·cm^-2. The detection limit is 0.0012 μg/mL, and the relative standard deviation ranges …

Neuraminidase-1 (NEU1) is the predominant sialidase expressed in human airway epithelia and lung microvascular endothelia where it mediates multiple biological processes. We tested whether the NEU1-selective sialidase inhibitor, C9-butyl-amide-2-deoxy-2,3-dehydro-Nacetylneuraminic acid (C9-BA-DANA), inhibits one or more established NEU1-mediated bioactivities in human lung cells. We established the IC50 values of C9-BA-DANA for total sialidase activity in human airway epithelia, lung microvascular endothelia and lung fibroblasts to be 3.74 µM, 13.0 µM and 4.82 µM, respectively. In human airway epithelia, C9-BA-DANA dose-dependently inhibited flagellin-induced, NEU1-mediated mucin-1 ectodomain desialylation, adhesiveness for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and shedding. In lung microvascular endothelia, C9-BA-DANA reversed NEU1-driven restraint of …

Metabolic Syndrome: Differences For Asian Americans Is In Their Percentage Of Body Fat, Patricia Alpert, Diane L. Thomason
Metabolic Syndrome: Differences For Asian Americans Is In Their Percentage Of Body Fat, Patricia Alpert, Diane L. Thomason
Asian/Pacific Island Nursing Journal
Asian Americans are not frequently thought of as being obese or overweight yet some of the Asian American subgroups have a disproportionate risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although the standardized body mass index (BMI) assessment is an adequate tool for reporting secular prevalence trends for overweight/obesity across populations, it falls short in accuracy when assessing Asian Americans. In recent years more has been written about the re-evaluation of BMI cut points for normal weight, overweight, or obese Asian Americans. Additionally, the waist circumference norm was modified to indicate a smaller waist size is a risk for …

Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
The article assesses the socio-economic and human repercussions of one of the fiercest ethnic conflicts in Ghana’s Northern Region on people and society. While Ghana remains a stable democracy, sporadic ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts have been a recurrent feature of the political process. Analyzing data from survey opinions and interviews from wide spectrum of respondents, the study noted that the Nawuri-Gonja conflicts have destroyed the fabric of the society leaving behind squalor, breakdown of healthcare, education and psychological trauma. Women and children have suffered rape assaults and unprecedented high rate of mortality due to malnourishments respectively. The plights of these …

Tetzlaff: Has The "Undue Hardship" Test Become Undue?, Alex J. Beehler
Seventh Circuit Review
As the wage-market remains stagnant, and student indebtedness continues to rise, many graduates struggle to balance their student loan debt. Generally, when a debtor files for bankruptcy, her student loan debt is not dischargeable. However, under 11 U.S.C. § 523(a)(8), debtors can discharge their student loans through bankruptcy if they can prove that maintaining those student loan debts would impose an "undue hardship" upon themselves. Unfortunately, Congress did not define what "undue hardship" meant when enacting the bankruptcy code. Courts have since been left to interpret the definition of "undue hardship," and many do so in different ways.
Across the …

Impunity For Snake Oil Merchants?: The Seventh Circuit Upholds The Class Action As A Vehicle For Consumer Protection, Stephen Pigozzi
Seventh Circuit Review
The class action is often the only way for victims of consumer fraud to pursue a remedy. Several federal circuit courts have recently adopted the heightened ascertainability requirement—a requirement that makes certifying a consumer class almost impossible. A plaintiff can only meet the heightened ascertainability requirement by showing that members of her proposed class can be identified in a reliable and administratively feasible way. This typically requires documentary proof of class membership. For classes made up of purchasers of deceptive low-cost products who have not kept their receipts, heightened ascertainability has served as an insurmountable barrier to certification.

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Even though human hookworm infection is highly endemic in many countries throughout the world, its global economic and health impact is not well known. Without a better understanding of hookworm's economic burden worldwide, it is difficult for decision makers such as funders, policy makers, disease control officials, and intervention manufacturers to determine how much time, energy, and resources to invest in hookworm control.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPLE FINDINGS: We developed a computational simulation model to estimate the economic and health burden of hookworm infection in every country, WHO region, and globally, in 2016 from the societal perspective. Globally, hookworm infection resulted in …

Co-Dynamics Of Trypanosomiasis And Cryptosporidiosis, Kazeem Oare Okosun, Mirirai Mukamuri, Oluwole Daniel Makinde
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper a mathematical model for trypanosomiasis-cryptosporidium co-infection dynamics is investigated to give a theoretical mathematical account of the impact of cryptosporidiosis on trypanosomiasis dynamics. The model steady states are analyzed. The disease-free equilibrium is shown to be locally asymptotically stable when the associated epidemic basic reproduction number for the model is less than unity. The trypanosomiasis only and the cryptosporidiosis only model are each found to exhibit transcritical and backward bifurcation phenomena respectively. While the co-infection model exhibits the possibility of multiple endemic equilibria. From the sensitivity analysis, the trypanosomiasis reproductive number Rlt 0 is more sensitive to …

Welfare Reform And The Intergenerational Transmission Of Dependence, Robert Paul Hartley, Carlos Lamarche, James P. Ziliak
Welfare Reform And The Intergenerational Transmission Of Dependence, Robert Paul Hartley, Carlos Lamarche, James P. Ziliak
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
We estimate the effect of welfare reform on the intergenerational transmission of welfare participation using a long panel of mother-daughter pairs over the survey period 1968-2013 in the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. Because states implemented welfare reform at different times starting in 1992, the cross-state variation over time permits us to quasi-experimentally separate out the effect of mothers’ participation on daughters’ welfare choice in the pre- and post-welfare reform periods. Our empirical framework also addresses potential issues in identifying a causal pathway from parent to child that arise from correlated unobservables in welfare decisions, misclassification error in survey reports, …

Strengthening The Farm To School Movement In Mississippi: Strategies And Policy Goals, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project
Delta Directions: Publications
In recent years, Mississippi has seen increasing demand for locally grown food. Many consumers, policymakers, and advocates now see locally grown food as bringing health, economic, and environmental benefits to the local community. “Farm to school,” a means of building relationships between local farms and schools, has become increasingly popular, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among students and strengthening the local economy. In the last decade, farm to school in Mississippi has gone from a little-known concept to a state-supported approach adopted by school districts across the state. For example, through the Mississippi Department of Defense Farm to School Program, …
