Overcoming Barriers And Increasing Confidence Of Providers And Nurses In Addressing Overweight And Obesity, Andrea D. Bearden
Overcoming Barriers And Increasing Confidence Of Providers And Nurses In Addressing Overweight And Obesity, Andrea D. Bearden
DNP and Student Works
The purpose of this DNP project was to improve weight loss management by decreasing barriers and increasing health care provider and nurse confidence in addressing overweight and obesity with patients. The project took place at a Midwest Veterans Affairs (VA) facility. The project director (PD) sent a recruitment email to health care providers and nurses working at the primary care clinics. The 13 individuals who agreed to participate completed an anonymous online pre-intervention survey to assess perceived barriers to and level of confidence in addressing overweight and obesity.
Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Home-Based Edible Gardening: Urban Residents’ Motivations And Barriers, Tenley M. Conway
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Home-based edible gardening is defined as individual households growing food on their own property. In the Global North, home-based edible gardens have recently been identified as an important part of urban sustainability initiatives, given the relatively large area of residential yard space available for food production in most cities. Yet basic questions around households’ decisions to participate in home-based edible gardening have not been fully examined, making the likelihood of meeting home-based gardens’ potential unclear. This study explores the motivations and barriers associated with home-based edible gardening through in-depth interviews with growers and non-growers. The study area is four neighborhoods …

Vegetarian Versus Meat-Based Diets For Companion Animals, Andrew Knight, Madelaine Leitsberger
Vegetarian Versus Meat-Based Diets For Companion Animals, Andrew Knight, Madelaine Leitsberger
Nutrition Collection
Companion animal owners are increasingly concerned about the links between degenerative health conditions, farm animal welfare problems, environmental degradation, fertilizers and herbicides, climate change, and causative factors; such as animal farming and the consumption of animal products. Accordingly, many owners are increasingly interested in vegetarian diets for themselves and their companion animals. However, are vegetarian canine and feline diets nutritious and safe? Four studies assessing the nutritional soundness of these diets were reviewed, and manufacturer responses to the most recent studies are provided. Additional reviewed studies examined the nutritional soundness of commercial meat-based diets and the health status of cats …

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Self-efficacy is a crucial component in effective health communication and health promotion interventions and serves as a moderator for behavior change. Although awareness and risk perception are important in the behavior change process, self-efficacy gives people the necessary confidence in their ability to engage in advocated health behaviors. In addressing childhood obesity, self-efficacy plays a crucial role in dietary decisions. Informed by the social cognitive theory, this study examines the personal and environmental factors that determine self-efficacy for healthy food choices and healthy eating among adolescents in low-income communities.
Methods: A survey was administered among adolescents in sixth to …
Breastfeeding And The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative: A Quality Improvement Project, Andrea K. Valentine
Breastfeeding And The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative: A Quality Improvement Project, Andrea K. Valentine
DNP and Student Works
The purpose of this DNP project was to provide support for nursing staff to feel empowered and motivated to provide new mothers with the support they needed to have a positive breastfeeding experience for their babies and themselves. Adult Learning Theory and the Rosswurm and Larrabee Model for Evidence-based Practice provided the framework for the project. A quasi-experimental study design was used to evaluate if the implementation of an educational intervention decreased barriers and improved nurses' self-confidence in supporting mothers in the decision to breastfeed their infants.

A High Protein Diet Has No Harmful Effects: A One-Year Crossover Study In Resistance-Trained Males, Jose Antonio, Anya Ellerbroek, Tobin A. Silver, Leonel Vargas, Armando Tamayo, Richard Buehn, Corey Peacock
Department of Health and Human Performance Faculty Articles
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a high protein diet over a one-year period. Fourteen healthy resistance-trained men completed the study (mean ± SD; age yr; height cm; and average years of training yr). In a randomized crossover design, subjects consumed their habitual or normal diet for 2 months and 4 months and alternated that with a higher protein diet (>3 g/kg/d) for 2 months and 4 months. Thus, on average, each subject was on their normal diet for 6 months and a higher protein diet for 6 months. Body composition was assessed via …

Retreat And Extinction Of The Late Pleistocene Cave Bear (Ursus Spelaeus Sensu Lato), Mateusz Baca, Danijela Popović
KIP Articles
The cave bear (Ursus spelaeus sensu lato) is a typical representative of Pleistocene megafauna which became extinct at the end of the Last Glacial. Detailed knowledge of cave bear extinction could explain this spectacular ecological transformation. The paper provides a report on the youngest remains of the cave bear dated to 20,930 ± 140 14C years before present (BP). Ancient DNA analyses proved its affiliation to the Ursus ingressus haplotype. Using this record and 205 other dates, we determined, following eight approaches, the extinction time of this mammal at 26,100–24,300 cal. years BP. The time is only slightly earlier, i.e. …
Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Mid-South Cotton Grown On Heterogeneous Soils With Cereal Cover Crops In Northeast Arkansas, Erin Jane Kelly
Spatial And Temporal Variability Of Mid-South Cotton Grown On Heterogeneous Soils With Cereal Cover Crops In Northeast Arkansas, Erin Jane Kelly
Student Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi Alluvial Plain has some of the most productive landscape for production agriculture in the world. This area also is known for highly variable soil within agricultural fields. In response to high input costs, many Midsouth cotton producers seek to improve input use efficiency using precision agriculture approaches including use of site-specific application of fertilizers, seed and other inputs directed at sub-regions of spatially variable fields. These sub-regions are known as management zones. One barrier to producer adoption of this type of site-specific management is a lack of practical guidelines for defining management zones tailored for the Midsouth region. …

This investigation evaluated whether moderate-intensity cycle ergometer training affects satellite cell and molecular responses to acute maximal concentric/eccentric resistance exercise in middle-aged women. Baseline and 72 h postresistance exercise vastus lateralis biopsies were obtained from seven healthy middle-aged women (56 ± 5 years, BMI 26 ± 1, VO2max 27 ± 4) before and after 12 weeks of cycle training. Myosin heavy chain (MyHC) I- and II-associated satellite cell density and cross-sectional area was determined via immunohistochemistry. Expression of 93 genes representative of the muscle-remodeling environment was also measured via NanoString. Overall fiber size increased ~20% with cycle training ( …

MLKL, a key component downstream of RIPK3, is suggested to be a terminal executor of necroptosis. Genetic studies have revealed that Ripk3 ablation rescues embryonic lethality in Fadd- or Caspase-8-deficient mice. Given that RIPK3 has also been implicated in non-necroptotic pathways including apoptosis and inflammatory signaling, it remains unclear whether the lethality in Fadd(-/-) mice is indeed caused by necropotosis. Here, we show that genetic deletion of Mlkl rescues the developmental defect in Fadd-deficient mice and that Fadd(-/-)Mlkl(-/-) mice are viable and fertile. Mlkl(-/-)Fadd(-/-) mice display significantly accelerated lymphoproliferative disease characterized by lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly when compared to Ripk3(-/-)Fadd(-/-) mice. …

Urban Agriculture As Embedded In The Social And Solidarity Economy Basel: Developing Sustainable Communities, Isidor Wallimann
Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Collaboration
The Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) is a viable strategy in dealing with some contemporary problems known both in industrial and developing countries. Addressed is how local populations could reach certain objectives and satisfy certain needs using techniques characteristic of SSE and, thus, carve out a social and economic space of their own vis-à-vis anonymous markets, global actors, local and national elites. Illustrated further is this strategy on the example of Urban Agriculture Basel, a unit of the Social Economy Basel. Within this self governed space, it is suggested, a path can be laid for the necessary transition towards local, …

Diet serves as a primary prevention approach to reduce the global burden of cancer. In 2007, the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research published the Second Expert Report (SER) Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: A Global Perspective outlining lifestyle recommendations for primary cancer prevention. Results support a strong link between red and processed meat and colorectal carcinogenesis. Findings from the Colorectal Cancer 2011 Report: Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer, a review conducted through the WCRF Continuous Update Project (CUP), strengthened the evidence and supported the …
