Aqueous Processing Of Lignocellulosic Biomass To Advanced Biofuels | Biological Engineering, Usu College Of Engineering
College of Engineering News
An important current focus of research in biology, chemistry, engineering, agriculture, and environmental sciences is the development of clean technologies that utilize cellulosic biomass as a renewable resource to the largest extent possible in a biorefinery setting to produce sustainable liquid transportation fuels and chemicals. Of all sustainable resources, only biomass can be transformed into organic fuels and chemicals that can integrate well into our current transportation infrastructure with the inherent convenience, cost, and efficiency advantages of current fuels. Cellulosic biomass can be converted to fuels and chemicals through aqueous-phase processes involving carbohydrates-derived and lignin-derived reactive intermediates deconstructed from these …

Ocean-Scale Monitoring Of Mesozooplankton On Atlantic Meridional Transect 21, Pf Culverhouse, R Williams, C Gallienne, J Tilbury, D Wall-Palmer
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
An in-flow instrument for imaging and identifying meso-zooplankton from a ship’s clean pumped sea water supply, from 6m, is described. Meso-zooplankton abundance was measured continuously, from 38 transects and 36 net hauls (0 - 200m), on a 13,500 km passage from the Bay of Biscay to the southern Atlantic Ocean on Atlantic Meridian Transect 21. A Line scan camera was used to give complete imaging of the in-flow water, in contrast to normal area scan cameras that sub-sample the flow. A total of 474 m³ of water was processed from transects and nearly 600,000 particles were imaged and categorized. Similarly, …

Associations Among Elementary School Children’S Actual Motor Competence, Perceived Motor Competence, Physical Activity And Bmi : A Cross-Sectional Study, An V. De Meester, David F. Stodden, Ali S. Brian, Larissa True, Greet Cardon, Isabel Tallir, Leen Haerens
Faculty Publications
Background
Positive associations between motor competence and physical activity have been identified by means of variable-centered analyses. To expand the understanding of these associations, this study used a person-centered approach to investigate whether different combinations (i.e., profiles) of actual and perceived motor competence exist (aim 1); and to examine differences in physical activity levels (aim 2) and weight status (aim 3) among children with different motor competence-based profiles.
Materials and Methods
Children’s (N = 361; 180 boys = 50%; Mage = 9.50±1.24yrs) actual motor competence was measured with the Test of Gross Motor Development-2 and their perceived motor …

Combined Effects Of Fertilizer, Irrigation, And Paclobutrazol On Yield And Fruit Quality Of Mango, Babul C. Sarker, Mohammad A. Rahim, Douglas D. Archbold
Horticulture Faculty Publications
Combinations of fertilizer rates, foliar N sprays, irrigation practices, and paclobutrazol were studied to determine how much they could alter and/or improve mango (Mangifera indica L.) growth, flowering, and yield. Two treatment combinations derived from several years of prior studies of individual practices were compared: one combination was comprised of the best (BT) individual practices from the prior studies and included three applications of fertilizer, a 4% KNO3 spray application before flowering, paclobutrazol at 7.5 g/L, and weekly irrigation, and the other combination was comprised of the next best (NB) individual practices including two applications of the same …

Implementation Of A Mentor Led Physical Activity Program Among Disadvantaged Youth, Karen M. Martin
Dissertations
Physical activity is an integral part of the war on pediatric obesity. Pediatric obesity is a worldwide epidemic affecting children of all races, classes, and gender. According to the Ohio Youth Risk Behavior Survey of 2013 over one third of Ohio children in grades nine through twelve were considered overweight or obese and engage in more than three hours of screen time, television, computers or video games daily. The purposes of this project was to introduce physical activity in the classroom environment in the form of physical activity breaks, led by physical activity leaders (PALs) to achieve improved BMI category, …
The Effective Management Of High Blood Pressure By Improving Adherence Through Education, Marjorie Carson
The Effective Management Of High Blood Pressure By Improving Adherence Through Education, Marjorie Carson
DNP and Student Works
This project assessed the effectiveness of the adoption of a policy including guidelines and training to improve antihypertensive medication adherence rates. The project determined the utilization of hypertensive clinical practice guidelines by primary health care providers. The method was to show improved rates of adherence to antihypertensive medications in patients over a 3-month period of time. The aim was to demonstrate an improvement in adherence to antihypertensive medication, subsequently showing a positive effect on the management of hypertension. This was accomplished through education provided to the primary health care providers. A policy utilizing the Joint National Committee-8 guidelines was developed …

Optimisation Of Fucoxanthin Extraction From Irish Seaweeds By Response Surface Methodology, Emer Shannon, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam
Optimisation Of Fucoxanthin Extraction From Irish Seaweeds By Response Surface Methodology, Emer Shannon, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam
Articles
Fucoxanthin is a xanthophyll pigment which occurs in marine brown algae (Phaeophyceae). The anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-cancer, and antioxidant properties of fucoxanthin have been widely reported. Macroalgae, particularly brown seaweeds, grow prolifically around Irish coasts, representing a valuable resource of nutraceuticals such as fucoxanthin for functional food applications. The aim of this study was to maximise the solvent extraction yield from three anatomically discrete regions of the seaweed thallus: blade, stipe, and holdfast. Response surface methodology was applied to determine optimum parameters for extraction of fucoxanthin from the seaweed, Fucus vesiculosus, as a model species. A central composite design was …
