Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015 and Tuesday, November 10, 2015:
There is little debate about the significance of nursing educational experiences to promote cultural understanding as the population requiring care becomes increasingly diverse. Faculty are aware of the study abroad research results yielding positive learning outcomes such as participants reporting increased understanding of other cultures and a commitment to being a positive force for improvement of healthcare abroad and in their own community (Saenz & Holcomb, 2009); gains in substantive knowledge, changes in values and communication skills (Carpenter & Garcia, 2012) and increased understanding as well as uncomfortable, …

The purpose of this presentation is to describe how Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Region 14 members and nurse leaders developed and operated two Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Master's Degree programs in Haiti. The significance of this program is great as there is a huge need in Haiti for quality prenatal care, newborn care and graduate nursing education. 70% of Haitians live on less than $2 a day. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and has one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates. It, also, has a …

The Lived Experience Of Nurses In Rural Uganda, Linda S. Johanson
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Monday, November 9, 2015:
In order to investigate the lived experience of nurses in rural Uganda this qualitative study was conducted in the summer of 2014. The researcher traveled to three bush villages in rural Uganda and interviewed seven nurses working in community clinics until data saturation was achieved. The interviews were taped and transcribed, then analyzed for themes. Three major themes emerged. Nurses in rural Uganda maintain a positive outlook in spite of harsh realities, they persevere out of a desire to help others, and they perceive nursing to be a notable and respected career in …

Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga
Understanding The Lived Experience Of Nursing Practice In Haiti, Lorraine E. Emeghebo, Judith C. James-Borga
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Session presented on Saturday, November 7, 2015:
With 80% of its population living below the poverty line, Haiti remains one of the lowest resource countries in the Western hemisphere. Compounding the high morbidly and mortality rates is the shortage of all levels of healthcare personnel including nurses. Most of the health care in Haiti is delivered by Registered Nurses (RN), the overwhelming majority of whom are diploma educated. Research shows that better nursing consistently leads to better outcomes for patients. Increasing the number of nurses with the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is central to reducing morbidity and …

The Petal Project: Bringing The Community Together Through Service, Karen M. Parker, Natalie Ann Masco
Biennial Convention (CONV)
As we increasingly become a global community, one of the challenges faced by schools of nursing today is building awareness of and an opportunity for responsiveness to global healthcare needs (Memmott, et. al., 2010; Burgess, et. al, 2014). Since May of 2011, the student nurses and faculty at the Wegmans School of Nursing (WSON) at St. John Fisher College (SJFC) have been involved in an initiative to keep young girls in the developing world in school. The Petal Project began following a medical mission trip with undergraduate students to a school and health clinic in a rural town in the …

Introduction: The Haitian American Nurses Association (HANA) joined forces with the Haitian Professional Coalition (HAPC) and the Bejamin Leon School of Nursing Miami Dade College (MDC) since 2005 to care for the migrant workers in the Dominican Republic. HANA organized and conducted medical missions in various 'Bateyes' (sugarcane plantations) in the Dominican Republic to provide healthcare and supplies to the migrant workers living in impoverished conditions. On March 16-23, 2013, 15 RNSN participated in the immersion project, similar to Gonzalez's (2013) immersive experience. Students collected over 375 book bags filled with school supplies …
Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley
Hope And Wellbeing Among Belizeans, Tauna Fleming Gulley
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on Sunday, July 26, 2015: Purpose: The purpose of most medical mission trips is to instill hope among the hopeless and foster physical, emotional and spiritual wellness among the population served. This objective is difficult to achieve during short-term missions. However, instilling hope in those who are hopeless is possible when there are others willing to intervene during the time period between medical mission team visits. By obtaining a better understanding of the subjective wellbeing of the population served, providers can further explore the nature of the satisfaction or dissatisfaction that is informing the subjective wellbeing of the …

Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson
Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson
Northwestern Review
Active participation by Christian laity in singing is a goal assumed by all liturgical leaders, scholars, and musicians. Is singing, though, the only form of active participation in liturgical music? What about listening? Drawing on discussions of listening by Aaron Copland, Frank Burch Brown, and Ronald J. Allen, it becomes clear that listening well is an active task, one for which musical leaders must prepare their congregations. Lay people should be encouraged to both receive music as a gift and to search out what it means in relationship to the congregation, the day, and the liturgical context. Congregations also need …

Does Theory Translate In The Trenches Of Short Term Mission Work?, Rhonda D. Hensley
Journal of Health Ethics
Despite numerous criticisms in the literature on the ethics and sustainable outcomes of short term international mission trips, there can be positive outcomes for volunteers and for recipients of short term mission care efforts. Utilizing a theoretical framework that addresses efforts to promote sustainability can lead to a structured, productive, and satisfying experience. With effective host country partnerships and an organized model of care delivery, international mission volunteers can provide highly effective health care services that are specific to the health and cultural needs of the host community.

Like many other universities of its kind, the University of Maine has a centralized body, the Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR), charged with engaging motivated students in independent learning and in the creation of new knowledge. UMaine furthermore has an honors college that is likewise committed to fostering undergraduate research, particularly research that is rooted in active learning under the guidance of a faculty mentor (University of Maine Honors College Mission Statement). Consistent with national trends, UMaine highly values the work that both CUGR and the honors college do in promoting undergraduate research. UMaine’s current strategic plan lists the advancement …
