Objective: Exposure to multiple disasters, both natural and technological, is associated with extreme stress and long-term consequences for older adults that are not well understood. In this article, we address age differences in health-related quality of life in older disaster survivors exposed to the 2005 Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill and the role played by social engagement in influencing these differences.

Methods: Participants were noncoastal residents, current coastal residents, and current coastal fishers who were economically affected by the BP oil spill. Social engagement was estimated on the basis of disruptions in charitable …

A Transactional Model And Platform For Designing And Implementing Reactive Systems, Justin Ross Wilson Dec 2016

A Transactional Model And Platform For Designing And Implementing Reactive Systems, Justin Ross Wilson

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

A reactive program is one that has "ongoing interactions with its environment." Reactive programs include those for embedded systems, operating systems, network clients and servers, databases, and smart phone apps. Reactive programs are already a core part of our computational and physical infrastructure and will continue to proliferate within our society as new form factors, e.g. wireless sensors, and inexpensive (wireless) networking are applied to new problems.

Asynchronous concurrency is a fundamental characteristic of reactive systems that makes them difficult to develop. Threads are commonly used for implementing reactive systems, but they may magnify problems associated with asynchronous concurrency, as …

Pleasure In The Past: Queer Nostalgia In The Gay American Century, Elisabeth Windle Dec 2016

Pleasure In The Past: Queer Nostalgia In The Gay American Century, Elisabeth Windle

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I recover nostalgia—unpopular, too frequently dismissed, and presumptively conservative—as a generative emotional position from which to read queer texts. My archive assembles a group of post-Stonewall texts—literature, film, television, and advertising—that marshal the pre-Stonewall literary past to support reflection on the pressing issues of recent gay life: same-sex marriage, the myth of the down low, effemiphobia and anti-feminism, and HIV/AIDS. Shuttling critically between modernist literary history and contemporary culture, I propose nostalgia as a useful affective mode for negotiating our relationship to queer history. Against both the pervasive narrative of gay progress circulating in mainstream culture and …

Rental Home Sweet Home: The Disparate Impact Solution For Renters Evicted From Residential Foreclosures, David Lurie Dec 2016

Rental Home Sweet Home: The Disparate Impact Solution For Renters Evicted From Residential Foreclosures, David Lurie

Northwestern University Law Review

At the end of the last decade, a drastic spike in residential foreclosures brought unprecedented attention to the damage that mass foreclosure often brings to primarily low-income, minority–majority communities. Much of this attention—in both the media and in the legal arena—has been devoted to homeowners disadvantaged by predatory loans and other unsavory practices. However, a recent body of scholarship has shown that the brunt of mass foreclosure often falls on renters, who often have little or no procedural protection from speedy and unexpected eviction from their homes, regardless of lease status or tenure. This Note argues that the Supreme Court’s …

Biogenetically Inspired Total Synthesis Of Lingzhiol. Design And Synthesis Of Axially Chiral N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts., Krishna Sharmah Gautam Dec 2016

Biogenetically Inspired Total Synthesis Of Lingzhiol. Design And Synthesis Of Axially Chiral N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts., Krishna Sharmah Gautam

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

A stereo- and enantio-selective synthesis of lingzhiol has been achieved, mimicking a proposed biogenetic pathway via Brønsted acid-catalyzed semipinacol rearrangement of a 2,3-epoxy alcohol. A new and improved method was developed for alkylation of anilines using a domestic microwave oven. The resulting racemic chiral anilines were resolved via classical resolution and transformed into axially chiral thiazolylidene-based NHC organocatalysts, which were applied to asymmetric benzoin condensation.

Modern Assessment Of The High-Energy Background Environment At Small Atmospheric Depths Using The X-Calibur X-Ray Polarimeter And Its Implications, Rashied Baradaran Amini Dec 2016

Modern Assessment Of The High-Energy Background Environment At Small Atmospheric Depths Using The X-Calibur X-Ray Polarimeter And Its Implications, Rashied Baradaran Amini

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Since the discovery of cosmic rays, Earth's upper atmosphere at depths of 1-10 g cm2 has been used for balloon-borne observations probing the high-energy universe. However, the interaction of cosmic rays with the earth atmosphere generates numerous particles, each with their own flux and interaction physics that contribute to instrument background. In Fall 2014, the X-Calibur X-ray polarimeter designed and built at Washington University in St. Louis was launched from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. While no astrophysical observation was performed as a result of a failure in telescope mechanisms, X-Calibur was able to record hours of instrument background with an …

The Violence Of Abstraction: Learning To Live With Type-2 Diabetes In Everyday Life, Jenny Epstein Dec 2016

The Violence Of Abstraction: Learning To Live With Type-2 Diabetes In Everyday Life, Jenny Epstein

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The impetus for this project grew out of my experience working as a pharmacist in a federally-funded ambulatory-care clinic In Tacoma, WA. Many people seen at the clinic struggled with type-2 diabetes (T2DM) and over time, I began to see this condition not only as a biological disorder, but also as a complex symptom of both macro-level social history and micro-level daily activities. I also began to see how the emphasis on medical abstraction in the form of measuring, monitoring and scheduling into daily routines, while necessary to control T2DM, created a gap between lived experience and the broader social …

Mass Spectrometry And Protein Analysis: Structure, Oligomerization And Interaction, Hanliu Wang Dec 2016

Mass Spectrometry And Protein Analysis: Structure, Oligomerization And Interaction, Hanliu Wang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Protein aggregation is common in biological processes including neurodegenerative diseases, as well as artificial development in biopharmaceutical production and protein storage. Therefore, understanding proteins involved in aggregation systems is important. It is generally difficult for high resolution structural methods, such as X-ray or NMR, to interrogate proteins possessing aggregation propensities. On the other hand, techniques that tolerate solution heterogeneities, such as circular dichroism, only provide global or low-resolution information. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods are appropriate and powerful in such applications because they can deal with mixtures. Additionally, primary sequence, post-translational modification, and structural information can be obtained at low sample …

Development And Characterization Of Genetic Sensors And Regulators For The Construction Of Environmentally-Responsive Genetic Circuits, Allison Hoynes-O'Connor Dec 2016

Development And Characterization Of Genetic Sensors And Regulators For The Construction Of Environmentally-Responsive Genetic Circuits, Allison Hoynes-O'Connor

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Genetic circuits enable engineers to program complex logical behaviors into living organisms. Organisms can be programmed to optimize the production of fuels and chemicals, diagnose and treat diseases, or remediate environmental pollutants. A well-characterized toolbox of genetic sensors and regulators is needed to construct these circuits. Genetic sensors that respond to environmentally-relevant signals allow circuits to evaluate the cell's conditions, and versatile and designable regulators translate information about the cell's environment into the desired response. In this work, we demonstrate the de novo design of RNA thermosensors in Escherichia coli, and integrate these sensors into complex genetic circuits. Next, we …

Harvesting A Sustainable Energy Future: Examining The Effect Of Chemical Composition On The Electromechanical Properties Of Polymer Gel Beads, Kaushik Kudtarkar Dec 2016

Harvesting A Sustainable Energy Future: Examining The Effect Of Chemical Composition On The Electromechanical Properties Of Polymer Gel Beads, Kaushik Kudtarkar

Theses

Clean energy is required to ensure global prosperity and economic growth. Increased industrialization is expected to increase energy demand by 50% by 2035. This will result in increased air pollution. Carbon dioxide emissions have been linked to global warming and other pollution related problems. These emissions can be reduced by recapturing the waste energy in the form of heat, vibration, and friction.

Common applications like transportation can lose as much as 78% of the energy they generate. Energy harvesters can be used to recapture energy lost through vibration, heat, etc. This recaptured energy will be reused and hence, we don’t …

Isolation Of Pharmaceutical-Degrading Bacteria From Lake Sediments Associated With Wastewater Effluents, Noreen Anne Gallagher Dec 2016

Isolation Of Pharmaceutical-Degrading Bacteria From Lake Sediments Associated With Wastewater Effluents, Noreen Anne Gallagher

Theses

Many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not properly equipped for the removal of various compounds, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), analgesics, and hormones. These compounds are continually discharged into surface waters, which has become an emerging issue for environmental and public health. Microorganisms in the natural environment may play a crucial role in ecosystem self-purification processes such as contaminant degradation. The aim of this research was to determine if there were microorganisms from water and sediment samples located near wastewater effluent outfalls in Central and Western New York capable of degrading ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen, and 17β-estradiol, and if the degradation …

Plate Waste Trends Of 5Th-8Th Grade Students At A Residential Environmental Learning Center, Colleen K. Foehrenbacher Dec 2016

Plate Waste Trends Of 5Th-8Th Grade Students At A Residential Environmental Learning Center, Colleen K. Foehrenbacher

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive research determined, using aggregated nonselective plate waste measurements, the characteristics of plate waste generated by 5th-8th grade students visiting Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Lanesboro, Minnesota over the course of 5 years. The results indicated a positive relationship between plate waste and group size; that groups from rural schools wasted less plate waste than schools from urban or suburban locations; and that groups from private schools wasted less than groups from public school groups. Completely eliminating plate waste is unrealistic, but reducing plate waste lowers user costs, makes program operations more efficient, and enhances a program’s success …

Image Politics: U.S. Aid To The Spanish Republic And Its Refugees, Sebastiaan Faber Dec 2016

Image Politics: U.S. Aid To The Spanish Republic And Its Refugees, Sebastiaan Faber

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The Spanish Civil War marks an important chapter in the development of non-governmental refugee aid as we know it. But studying the case of U.S. aid for Spanish Republican refugees also brings into focus some of the tensions and contradictions associated with the concept of humanitarianism, including the role played by documentary images. What were the ideals that moved those who fought against fascism or aided antifascist refugees in the 1930s and ‘40s? Were they properly political, or did they transcend politics, becoming humanitarian? The distinction is crucial to understanding the efforts undertaken to aid Spanish Civil War refugees and …

Teaching Art History From A Biblical Foundation:Art History As A View Into The Great Controversy, Giselle Sarli Hasel, M.F.A. Dec 2016

Teaching Art History From A Biblical Foundation:Art History As A View Into The Great Controversy, Giselle Sarli Hasel, M.F.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

This paper provides a broad historical overview of how Judeo-Christian philosophy and values have been communicated through the arts. It suggests that our need for artistic expression is part of our search and longing for what is greater than us. This is a divine mandate for the Bible asserts God as an artist and the role His creativity plays in the relationship between God and humanity. But Exodus 20 also indicates that this relationship can be misused and misunderstood with the prohibition of idolatry. There is a clear biblical differentiation between the wise artist, who uses art for the search …

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A. Dec 2016

A Narrative Of Kingdom Culture, Verlyne Starr, M.A.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The purpose of this paper is to encourage Christian educators to use narrative as a pedagogical strategy to enhance the knowledge of and authenticate the values of the kingdom of God. Effective biblical narrative illustrates and emphasizes heaven’s culture, or kingdom culture, in contrast to earthly cultural norms. Narrative effectively suspends disbelief and doubt in the mind of the listener and can facilitate sharing the distinctive Seventh-day Adventist biblical worldview (biblical worldview). Stories help the audience make sense of complex concepts and discover unknown facts and perspectives. The communication of cultural norms through stories has normative ramifications on the listener’s …

History Highlights The Fundamental Limitations Of Science, Kenneth E. Caviness, Ph.D. Dec 2016

History Highlights The Fundamental Limitations Of Science, Kenneth E. Caviness, Ph.D.

The Journal of Biblical Foundations of Faith and Learning

The idea that science is the only valid guide to truth is not itself a scientific statement, but rather the fundamental dogma of scientism. It is the purpose of this paper to show this claim to be unwarranted and scientism untenable, through a consideration of what science can and cannot say, illustrated from the history of science itself. Discussion of criteria for selecting among models making equivalent predictions is highlighted by examples of common reactions of the scientific community when new observational data conflict with well-accepted theory: to deny the observations, to adapt or replace the theory (often at the …
