Multiplex Drug Screenings To Discover Host Oriented Therapies Against Infectious Diseases, William Leonardi Dec 2016

Multiplex Drug Screenings To Discover Host Oriented Therapies Against Infectious Diseases, William Leonardi

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Drug resistance is a longstanding and still-increasing threat to the effective treatment of infectious diseases. Discovering drugs that target host proteins involved in pathogenicity is a strategy that could address this problem. Unfortunately, there are currently no FDA-approved infectious disease therapies that specifically target host proteins. Our goal is to develop a method to i) quickly discover new drugs for the treatment infectious diseases, ii) identify the specific host protein target of the drugs, iii) investigate the broad spectrum application of the drugs. To find these types of drugs, we employed a novel multiplex drug screening method in which we …

De-Centering “The” Survey: The Value Of Multiple Introductory Surveys To Art History, Melissa R. Kerin Phd, Andrea Lepage Phd Dec 2016

De-Centering “The” Survey: The Value Of Multiple Introductory Surveys To Art History, Melissa R. Kerin Phd, Andrea Lepage Phd

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

This essay stems from our concern that art historians still conceive of “The” Survey in terms that privilege Western artistic traditions. In this article, we offer an alternative that we designate as the multi-survey model (MSM) or approach. “The survey” becomes “the surveys” that introduce students to Western arts and the art forms of often underrepresented regions. Twenty-one percent of the schools surveyed in our peer review employ similar models, and yet the MSM has yet to attract critical scholarly attention. This essay addresses a void in present scholarship and elaborates upon three main goals of the MSM, all of …

Making The Absent Present: The Imperative Of Teaching Art History, Beth Harris Phd, Steven Zucker Phd

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

Since its emergence in 2005 as a free and open online resource for instructors, students, and the general public, Smarthistory has made numerous groundbreaking changes and advances for better teaching and more engaged learning. Playing upon the theme "making the absent [art work] present,” we explain how Smarthistory’s lively dialogic pedagogy combined with a rich variety of image views, reconstructions, google street views, diagrams, and essays has successfully replaced the traditional dependence on an art history text for many instructors. The result is an enhanced experiential and contextual experience for the student. For a discipline whose works were often accessible …

Building A Foundation For Survey: Employing A Focused Introduction, Glenda M. Swan Dec 2016

Building A Foundation For Survey: Employing A Focused Introduction, Glenda M. Swan

Art History Pedagogy & Practice

This paper discusses the impact of introducing a multi-day introduction in an art history survey course in order to promote student awareness of the transferability of the skills and strategies of visual analysis to other contexts and courses outside of the discipline. Class discussion, course activities, and supplemental support materials were developed with the goal of generating student interest, investment, and self-efficacy in connection with art historical methodology and study strategies. Student performance and feedback in a recent survey course employing this introduction was then compared to earlier offerings of the course that did not employ this introduction. Preliminary results …

Management Of A Patient With Bronchiectasis Using Pulmonary Rehabilitation And Balance Training: A Case Report, Megan Witherow Quarles

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease defined by permanent, abnormal dilation of the bronchi and accompanied by chronic airway infection which leads to airway inflammation. Bronchiectasis is progressive and leads to a cycle of worsening pulmonary damage. Pulmonary rehabilitation, including progressive gait training, cycling, and stair climbing, is often utilized as treatment for this condition. However, there has been little research conducted on its effectiveness for bronchiectasis. The purpose of this case report is to examine physical therapy (PT) management, utilizing pulmonary rehabilitation with incorporated balance training, for a geriatric patient with bronchiectasis. Description: The patient was …

The Experiential Course Book I Have Been Waiting For, Martin J. Katz Dec 2016

The Experiential Course Book I Have Been Waiting For, Martin J. Katz

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

There is an exciting movement toward practical legal education in U.S. law schools. There are many good reasons for this movement, including demand from students and potential students, as well as demand from the employers and clients that will hire those students. Additionally, a plethora of compelling studies strongly suggest that adults learn best through practical, contextual, experiential education.

Yet, many professors in U.S. law schools continue to teach using more traditional methods. There are a number of reasons for this. Perhaps the most widespread reason why professors hesitate to engage in experiential, or problem-based, teaching is the amount of …

It assessed the providers’ knowledge and sought to evaluate if increased knowledge occurred after an educational program presentation. Following the educational program, a follow-up survey was distributed via email to assess the providers self-reported perceived practice change six weeks after the education.

Part one measured if an increase in knowledge of the 5210 components, correct laboratory testing, and assessment of comorbidities occurred. …

The Ethics Behind Efficiency, Jonathan B. Wight Dec 2016

The Ethics Behind Efficiency, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

The normative elements underlying efficiency are more complex than generally portrayed, and rely upon ethical frameworks that are generally absent from classroom discussions. Most textbooks, for example, ignore the ethical differences between Pareto efficiency (based on voluntary win-win outcomes) and the modern Kaldor-Hicks efficiency used in public policy assessments (in which winners gain more than losers lose). For the latter to be ethically palatable, society must have in place basic institutions of justice, transparency, and accountability. Normative economics thus requires a pluralist approach that includes considerations of virtue and duty, closer to Adam Smith’s Enlightenment conceptions. This surprising finding should …

The Media And Candidate Popularity During The 2012 And 2016 Elections, Aleksandra Szczesna

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The media has been the prevalent source of political information to voters for decades. Meanwhile, negativity in the press has grown as reporters investigate political candidates and often criticize them to try to come up with attention-grabbing news stories. During this time of increasing negativity in the news, do political candidates running for office benefit from media coverage? It is important to determine whether the media has an effect on candidate popularity and if it influences voter opinion during election years. This paper describes the media's relationship with political candidates running for office and the power of the media in …

Message from President: Ingeniously positioned in a way that can only be accomplished through centuries of cultural evolution, Christmas occurs near the longest, darkest night of the year so as to suggest that even a small ray of light shines brightest when piercing the gloom. However severe the shortage of light around the yuletide, it never rivals the acute dimness of that social counterpart to night, blacklisting. With the advent of web sites such as Professor Watch List, an organization that stigmatizes dissenting professors and encourages students to reconnoiter them, blacklisting is much in the news these days, and rightly …

There are 21.8 million Veterans currently in the United States, with the majority receiving their healthcare outside of the Veteran Health Administration. Veterans form a culture that is steeped in military tradition and it is essential that healthcare providers have knowledge regarding this vulnerable population to provide care that is culturally appropriate. In response to the Veteran healthcare crisis, the Department of Veteran Affairs initiated the Veteran Affairs Nursing Academy Partnership (VANAP), a joint venture between VHA medical centers and schools …

The Role Of Diaphanous In Ring Canal Development In Drosophila Melanogaster, Alexandra M. Kindred Dec 2016

The Role Of Diaphanous In Ring Canal Development In Drosophila Melanogaster, Alexandra M. Kindred

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Infertility is a widespread condition that does not always have a known cause, and for which we often do not have a cure. One potential cause of infertility is defects in gametogenesis, or the formation of sperm and egg. During gametogenesis in most organisms, the developing sperm and egg are connected to each other or to supporting cells through intercellular bridges, allowing transfer of materials between cells. Defects in these connections can lead to infertility. The developing fruit fly egg is an excellent model system to study intercellular bridges, or ring canals. Rich in f-actin and actinbinding proteins, ring canals …

An explosive combination of political turmoil, a deep economic crisis and critical security situation has Venezuela on the verge of collapse. Ferraris, access to private aircrafts and bodyguards are only some of the privileges that only few can get access to in this impoverished South American nation.

Efrain Antonio Campo Flores, 30, and Franqui Francisco Flores de Freitas, 31 -- the nephews of the Venezuelan Presidential couple -- were found guilty of conspiring to import hundreds of kilograms of cocaine …

Libertarian Party Grows...And So Do Its Critics, Nicole Andrea Ashley

Capstones

The Libertarian Party, which calls itself “The Party of Principle,” seems to have had a special appeal during the 2016 presidential election—a campaign in which the two major party candidates started out with historically low approval numbers.

Supporters of the party, such as Doug Braff, a film student from NYU, remained loyal to the party even after the election season was over. These supporters have received backlash from disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters who believe that Clinton could have won the presidency if she had garnered the votes that, instead, went to Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate.

Tracing the Rise of Food Mash-ups

In 2013, Chef Dominique Ansel gave the world something it had never seen before -- the Cronut. The cross between a donut and a croissant sent shockwaves that rippled through the New York City culinary scene and through food culture across the country. People waited in line for hours and even sold their Cronuts on the black market. While the line for the dessert has simmered down in recent years, the effort to follow suit has not. Restaurateurs, fast-food establishments and food bloggers quickly made efforts to construct new dishes with strange food combinations, …
