An Analysis Of Folic Acid Supplementation In Women Presenting For Antenatal Care, Shona Cawley, Laura Mullaney, Aoife Mckeating, Maria Farren, Daniel Mccartney, Michael Turner Jan 2016

An Analysis Of Folic Acid Supplementation In Women Presenting For Antenatal Care, Shona Cawley, Laura Mullaney, Aoife Mckeating, Maria Farren, Daniel Mccartney, Michael Turner

Articles

Background: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are major congenital malformations that are potentially preventable if the woman takes periconceptional folic acid (FA) supplements. A recent report found that NTD incidence had increased in Ireland. This study examined the usage of FA supplementation in women presenting for antenatal care in a maternity hospital.

Compositional Changes For Reduction Of Polymerisation-Induced Shrinkage In Holo, Dervil Cody, Mohesh Moothanchery, Emilia Mihaylova, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova, Izabela Naydenova Jan 2016

Compositional Changes For Reduction Of Polymerisation-Induced Shrinkage In Holo, Dervil Cody, Mohesh Moothanchery, Emilia Mihaylova, Vincent Toal, Svetlana Mintova, Izabela Naydenova

Doctoral

Polymerisation-induced shrinkage is one of the main reasons why many photopolymer materials are not used for certain applications including holographic optical elements and holographic data storage. Here, two compositional changes for the reduction of shrinkage in an acrylamide-based photopolymer are reported. A holographic interferometric technique was used to study changes in the dynamics of the shrinkage processes occurring in the modified photopolymer during holographic recording in real time. Firstly, the effect of the replacement of the acrylamide monomer in the photopolymer composition with a larger monomer molecule, diacetone acrylamide, on polymerisation-induced shrinkage has been studied. A reduction in relative shrinkage …

Frankenfolk: Distinctiveness And Attractiveness Of Voice And Motion, Jan Ondřej, Cathy Ennis, Niamh Merriman, Carol O'Sullivan

Articles

It is common practice in movies and games to use different actors for the voice and body/face motion of a virtual character. What effect does the combination of these different modalities have on the perception of the viewer? In this article, we conduct a series of experiments to evaluate the distinctiveness and attractiveness of human motions (face and body) and voices. We also create combination characters called FrankenFolks, where we mix and match the voice, body motion, face motion, and avatar of different actors and ask which modality is most dominant when determining distinctiveness and attractiveness or whether the effects …

Novel Therapeutic Approaches To Induce Autophagy In Brain Cancer, Gillian Conway Jan 2016

Novel Therapeutic Approaches To Induce Autophagy In Brain Cancer, Gillian Conway

Doctoral

Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) is classified as a malignant grade IV astrocytoma, and is considered to be the most biologically aggressive brain tumour with a 5-year survival rate of ~4%. The most frequent issue arising with GBM tumours is the high level of resistance observed to conventional therapeutic methods i.e. surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, thus signifying the urgency for the development of novel therapeutic methods. This study aims to investigate and develop both a complimentary and novel method to overcome the current treatment barriers. We have investigated the use of novel technologies such as cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) as an alternative …

Anode Catalysts For The Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell, Daryl Fox Jan 2016

Anode Catalysts For The Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell, Daryl Fox

Doctoral

The anodic reaction of the Direct Ethanol Fuel Cell has been studied with various catalysts such as electrodeposited platinum, palladium, nickel and gold electrodes. The mechanism of bimetallic catalysts was used to reduce the platinum content needed for ethanol oxidation. The effects of increased temperature, ethanol concentration, electrolyte pH and scan rate have been examined. The impact of different carbon surfaces such as carbon ink, carbon paper and commonly used Vulcan XC72 have also been analysed in order to determine the optimum conditions for the EOR in a fuel cell.

Electrochemical methods were used to analyse catalyst performance such as …

A New Educational Mobile Devices Platform For Social Inclusion In Tanzania, Fredrick Mtenzi Jan 2016

A New Educational Mobile Devices Platform For Social Inclusion In Tanzania, Fredrick Mtenzi

Articles

Abstract— It is evident that advances in technology has led to improvement in societal wellbeing. In this paper we demonstrate how mobile phones are used in providing reliable and quality education to students in disadvantaged areas of Tanzania. The main contribution is on leveraging on the success that Tanzania has had on using mobile banking to the un-banked population. These lessons are adapted to the education sector, where clever/smart integration of existing disruptive technologies such as mobile phones and social networks are be used to provide access to high quality educational contents. Further, the paper shows how educational content can …

Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt Jan 2016

Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt

Apparel Design and Hospitality Management

The purpose of this research study is to explore whether consumers would be complicit in the purchase of counterfeit goods once becoming aware of the counterfeit industry being linked to terrorism. Counterfeit goods are defined as identical copies of authentic products and they are produced without the permission of the registered owner (Carpenter & Lear, 2011). Almost any product can be counterfeited from clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags and even medicines. Counterfeit products are sold at a fraction of the cost of the authentic product. This study identifies the ‘why’ to consumer complicity to purchase the counterfeit items. There are legalities …

Aspects Of Job Satisfaction In Female Millennial Generation Retail Employees, Victoria Wrae Frank Jan 2016

Aspects Of Job Satisfaction In Female Millennial Generation Retail Employees, Victoria Wrae Frank

Apparel Design and Hospitality Management

Since young adult female employees represent a sizeable portion of the retail workplace, particularly in clothing, shoes and jewelry, this study focused on aspects of job satisfaction of female Millennial generation (born between 1980 and 2000) retail stores employees. In-depth qualitative interviews regarding the workers’ major values, concerns, and motivations were conducted during the Spring of 2016 in a Midwestern city in the United States of America. Participants indicated that camaraderie among coworkers and the team, and flexible scheduling practices were the most important values relating to job satisfaction. Work-life balance and maintaining a 40-hour work week or steady scheduled …

Wintertime For Deceptive Advertising?, Jonathan Zinman, Eric Zitzewitz Jan 2016

Wintertime For Deceptive Advertising?, Jonathan Zinman, Eric Zitzewitz

Dartmouth Scholarship

Casual empiricism suggests that deceptive advertising about product quality is prevalent, and several classes of theories explore its causes and consequences. We provide unusually sharp empirical evidence on its extent, mechanics, and dynamics. Ski resorts self-report substantially more natural snowfall than comparable government sources. The difference is more pronounced on weekends, despite third-party evidence that snowfall is uniform throughout the week—as one would expect given plausibly greater returns to exaggeration on weekends. Exaggeration is greater for resorts that plausibly reap greater benefits from it: those with expert terrain and those not offering money back guarantees. (JEL D83, L15, L83, M37, …
