"We're In The Business Of A Good Education": Schooled To Profit Or Educated To Create?, Nicole Nolasco Jan 2016

"We're In The Business Of A Good Education": Schooled To Profit Or Educated To Create?, Nicole Nolasco

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

In this inquiry, I ask the questions: What could my career, my life, and the world be like in the future? How could public education be impacted by the frenzy over accountability, standards, and the belief that competition and unrestricted capitalism will reform American schools, especially for students of color and from the working and lower classes? How can I, a high school English teacher, address pressing social and educational issues to affect change? I explore these questions through a work of fiction I have created. Theoretically drawing from critical pedagogy, I use arts based research and fiction as methodology …

An Exploration Of The Impostor Phenomenon And Its Impact On Black Women Administrators In Higher Education In The South, Marian Muldrow

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Numerous studies document Black student and faculty underrepresentation in higher education and the obstacles blocking their access to the classroom either as students or as instructors. As Black women students work toward graduate degrees, Black women administrators are needed so these students can see their identity reflected in their academic leaders.

As a result, this study focused on the particular challenges that limit upward mobility to senior-level administrative positions and highlighted some of the obstacles and conflicts that arise when Black women pursue leadership positions at institutions of higher education. The highlighted historical events related to education, as well as …

Charter School Governance: An Exploration Of Autonomy And Board Effectiveness, June A. Erskine Jan 2016

Charter School Governance: An Exploration Of Autonomy And Board Effectiveness, June A. Erskine

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Despite the increased numbers of charter schools each year, we understand very little about their governing boards. According to the Georgia Public Policy Foundation (2004) factors that correlate with charter school success such as accountability, public support, and institutional capacity to progress toward established goals are typically under the management of a charter school governing board. While there is no shortage of governance recommendations for charter schools, there are few empirically validated prescriptions. There are empirically validated characteristics of successful Non-Profit Organization (NPO) governing boards (Herman & Renz, 2008). The methodology for this research was designed to determine if governance …

Performance Enhancement Of Equivalence Principle Algorithm, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zu Hui Ma, Shi Quan He Jan 2016

Performance Enhancement Of Equivalence Principle Algorithm, Xin Fu, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Zu Hui Ma, Shi Quan He

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The conventional equivalence principle algorithm (EPA) exploits cubical surfaces to support equivalent sources. However, it introduces strong discontinuities due to sharp edges and corners. In this letter, a spherical surface is employed as the equivalence surface to avoid singularities from nonsmoothness. To achieve better accuracy, the meshless sampling scheme is used for integral operators on the spherical equivalence surface. The numerical examples are provided to validate the performance enhancement of EPA through the proposed method.

A Response To Professor Samuel Rascoff’S Presidential Intelligence, Carrie F. Cordero Jan 2016

A Response To Professor Samuel Rascoff’S Presidential Intelligence, Carrie F. Cordero

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Should foreign intelligence collection be subject to more rigorous oversight, and therefore, improved accountability, through a policy process that involves deeper personal involvement by the President and National Security Council (NSC)? Would a greater number of political appointees across the intelligence community facilitate that oversight? These are the essential questions posed by Professor Samuel Rascoff in his article Presidential Intelligence.

You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat: Alternatives To The Un Security Council For Enforcing Nuclear Disarmament And Human Rights, David A. Koplow Jan 2016

You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat: Alternatives To The Un Security Council For Enforcing Nuclear Disarmament And Human Rights, David A. Koplow

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

There is a serious problem with the Security Council. That institution endowed by the United Nations Charter with "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security" -- has stood at the apex of the global political, diplomatic, and legal structure for seventy years, responding (more or less) to the full panoply of incessant dangers and provocations. The Charter could not have been crafted or sustained without it, and the Security Council has, at least, assisted in preserving a measure of fundamental world order-in particular, it has helped avoid the cataclysm of a World War III.

But a central …

After Snowden: Regulating Technology-Aided Surveillance In The Digital Age, David Cole

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Imagine a state that compels its citizens to inform it at all times of where they are, who they are with, what they are doing, who they are talking to, how they spend their time and money, and even what they are interested in. None of us would want to live there. Human rights groups would condemn the state for denying the most basic elements of human dignity and freedom. Student groups would call for boycotts to show solidarity. We would pity the offending state's citizens for their inability to enjoy the rights and privileges we know to be essential …

Heightened Procedure, Jessica Erickson Jan 2016

Heightened Procedure, Jessica Erickson

Law Faculty Publications

When it comes to combating meritless litigation, how much should procedure matter? Conventional wisdom holds that procedure should be uniform, with the same rules applying in all civil cases. Yet the causes of meritless litigation are not uniform, making it difficult for identical procedures to address the problem. As a result, lawmakers frequently turn to what this Article calls “heightened procedure”—additional procedures applicable only in designated areas of the law. Across a variety of substantive areas, lawmakers have adopted heightened pleading standards, stays of discovery, agency review, and a multitude of other tools from the heightened procedural toolbox. Despite the …

Income-Driven Repayment And The Public Financing Of Higher Education, John R. Brooks Jan 2016

Income-Driven Repayment And The Public Financing Of Higher Education, John R. Brooks

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article provides the first comprehensive analysis in the legal literature of the federal government’s new income-driven student loan repayment programs, known as Income-Based Repayment and Pay As You Earn. In a set of gradual and little-noticed statutory and regulatory moves, the federal government, through these programs, has dramatically reshaped higher education finance in ways that schools, students, and even the government itself are only beginning to understand.

Under IBR and PAYE, a student borrower pays no more than 10% of her discretionary income in loan service payments, and after a maximum of 20 years, the remaining debt is forgiven—for …

Identifying And Supporting Numeracy Needs Of First Year Undergraduate Education Students, Fiona Budgen, John West Jan 2016

Identifying And Supporting Numeracy Needs Of First Year Undergraduate Education Students, Fiona Budgen, John West

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Currently Australian pre-service teachers’ levels of personal numeracy are under a great deal of scrutiny. There are calls for universities to raise entry standards into teaching degrees and counter-calls that the output of universities should be gauged rather than inputs. In 2015, doubts about the ability of graduate teachers to convey the desired skills, knowledge and attitudes in mathematics led the Australian Government to mandate the introduction of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students. From 2017, all pre-service teachers in Australia will be required to pass prior to graduation. The present research sought to identify specific …

Re-Conceptualising Graduate Employability: The Importance Of Pre-Professional Identity, Denise Jackson Jan 2016

Re-Conceptualising Graduate Employability: The Importance Of Pre-Professional Identity, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Despite efforts to broaden the concept of graduate employability, there remains an overarching focus on developing industry-relevant employability skills. The skills-based approach is, however, too narrow and does not fully capture the complexity of graduate work-readiness. This paper argues for the redefining of graduate employability by embracing pre-professional identity (PPI) formation. PPI relates to an understanding of and connection with the skills, qualities, conduct, culture and ideology of a student's intended profession. The ‘communities of practice’ model is drawn upon to demonstrate how PPI can be developed during university years. Here, a student makes sense of his/her intended profession through …

Permanent Slides For Morphological Studies Of Small Crustaceans: Serban's Method And Its Variation Applied On Bathynellacea (Malacostraca), Giulia Perina, Ana I. Camacho Jan 2016

Permanent Slides For Morphological Studies Of Small Crustaceans: Serban's Method And Its Variation Applied On Bathynellacea (Malacostraca), Giulia Perina, Ana I. Camacho

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Morphological studies of small invertebrates often involve the preparation of slides to observe minute body parts under a compound microscope. Preparation should facilitate observation, through traditional optical microscopy, of small surface structures on different planes, like pores, spines and setae. Various methods and techniques, using different mounting media that specialists have adopted to observe and preserve small crustaceans, have their advantages and disadvantages.Within the order Bathynellacea, specimens in the family Bathynellidae are particularly challenging due to their small size (0.5 to 2.25 mm body length) and very delicate exoskeleton, which tends to be completely digested when using common clearing mounting …

Continuous Flow Reactor For Carbonic Acid Hydrolysis/Pretreatment Of Microalgal Biomass To Produce Bioethanol, Nicholas Dudenhoeffer Jan 2016

Continuous Flow Reactor For Carbonic Acid Hydrolysis/Pretreatment Of Microalgal Biomass To Produce Bioethanol, Nicholas Dudenhoeffer

Doctoral Dissertations

"In order to maximize bioethanol production an efficient pretreatment method for the hydrolysis of polysaccharides to fermentable sugars is necessary. Commonly used pretreatment methods are the slow enzymatic hydrolysis and the corrosive mineral acid hydrolysis process that requires a post-treatment neutralization step and generates waste stream. We investigated the high temperature water with carbonic acid catalyst as an alternative method. Carbonic acid generated from dissolved CO2 is inexpensive and environmentally benign, and easily removed by decompression. A high pressure continuous flow reactor that can continuously process the wet biomass stream and perform the carbonic acid hydrolysis in-situ using the …

Microwave Material Characterization Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) Gel In Cementitious Materials, Ashkan Hashemi Jan 2016

Microwave Material Characterization Of Alkali-Silica Reaction (Asr) Gel In Cementitious Materials, Ashkan Hashemi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Since alkali-silica reaction (ASR) was recognized as a durability challenge in cement-based materials over 70 years ago, numerous methods have been utilized to prevent, detect, and mitigate this issue. However, quantifying the amount of produced ASR byproducts (i.e., ASR gel) in-service is still of great interest in the infrastructure industry. The overarching objective of this dissertation is to bring a new understanding to the fundamentals of ASR formation from a microwave dielectric property characterization point-of-view, and more importantly, to investigate the potential for devising a microwave nondestructive testing approach for ASR gel detection and evaluation. To this end, a comprehensive …

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat Jan 2016

Contribution Of New Thiol Antioxidant In The Treatment Of Acetaminophen Toxicity, Ahdab Naeem Khayyat

Doctoral Dissertations

"Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP) is one of the most widely used over-the-counter antipyretic analgesic medications. It is safe at therapeutic doses, but an overdose can result in severe hepato-nephrotoxicity, a leading cause of drug-induced acute liver failure in the U.S. Although a few different mechanisms have been proposed for APAP-induced toxicity, a significant amount of evidence has pointed to the potential involvement of oxidative stress in acetaminophen toxicity. Depletion of glutathione (GSH) is one of the initiating steps in APAP-induced toxicity; therefore, one strategy for restricting organ damage is to restore GSH levels by using GSH prodrugs like N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Although …
