Development Of Aerosol Microparticles For The Treatment Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Sarah Brousseau Jan 2016

Development Of Aerosol Microparticles For The Treatment Of Pulmonary Hypertension, Sarah Brousseau

Open Access Master's Theses

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is an incurable cardiovascular disease characterized by high blood pressure in the arteries leading from the heart to the lungs. Over 2 million people in the United States are diagnosed with PAH annually and the typical survival rate is only 3 years after diagnosis (Archer, Weir et al. 2010). Current treatments are insufficient because of limited bioavailability, toxicity, and cost associated with approved therapeutics. Aerosol delivery of drugs is an attractive approach to treat respiratory diseases because it increases localized drug concentration while reducing systemic side effects. Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) allow for increased physicochemical stability …

The current status of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) stands to develop greatly, with many new technologies offering promising new methods interacting with a computer. The goal of this project is to develop a novel device that is compatible with desktop style point-and-click interfaces designed for mice but has the unique advantages of being 'Untethered' and 'Hands-free'. The use of Electromyography (EMG) and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) was initially investigated, leading to an alternative design utilizing a series of small Hall Effect sensors and corresponding magnet(s). The cursor response was identified as the most important factor to ease of use, …

Growth, Grazing And Starvation Survival In Three Heterotrophic Dinoflagellate Species, Sean Anderson Jan 2016

Growth, Grazing And Starvation Survival In Three Heterotrophic Dinoflagellate Species, Sean Anderson

Open Access Master's Theses

We measured growth and grazing rates of three heterotrophic dinoflagellate species Oxyrrhis marina, Gyrodinium dominans and G. spirale exposed to starved versus continuously-fed prey conditions and assessed their starvation survival ability. All three dinoflagellate species survived long periods (>10 days) without prey, up to 118 days in the case of O. marina. After 1-3 weeks, starvation led to a 17-57% decrease in grazer cell volume and cells became more deformed and transparent over time. Starved grazers rapidly ingested new prey within 3 hours as evidenced by increased cell volumes of 4-17%. Grazer cultures that were starved had …

Situating Genre On Youtube: We Rant, We Laugh, We Conquer?, Emma Gabriele Jan 2016

Situating Genre On Youtube: We Rant, We Laugh, We Conquer?, Emma Gabriele

Open Access Master's Theses

This body of research seeks to understand iterations of ranting manifest via YouTube video blogs through a rhetorical lens. I employ comparative theory to develop a description of the rant as a recurring typology, equipped with excremental metaphors inspired by Burke’s concept of catharsis. I then differentiate YouTube vlog ranting from ‘live’ ranting by applying Carolyn Miller’s theory of genre as social action. Using Miller’s paradigm, I turn to contemporary research in media studies and humor communication, in order to develop a methodology equipped to analyze YouTube vlog rants as generic texts. I contend that the meaning constructed in YouTube …

Comparison Of Sasw Systems For Coastal And Offshore Applications, Finn Groenewold Jan 2016

Comparison Of Sasw Systems For Coastal And Offshore Applications, Finn Groenewold

Open Access Master's Theses

Spectral analysis of surface wave (SASW) systems are an increasingly popular tool for the estimation of shear wave velocity profiles of geotechnical sites as a reasonable alternative to expensive and difficult downhole and crosshole tests. However, there are relatively few commercial systems using this new approach. The prime-objective of this study is to understand the application of a commercial SASW system manufactured by Olson Instruments, Inc. and to compare the results obtained with it to a Multi-Channel Analysis of Surface Wave system developed at the University of Rhode Island. For the field testing program, different sized sledgehammers and weights were …

Thalassiosira Community Composition And Diversity In Narragansett Bay, Sarah Flickinger Jan 2016

Thalassiosira Community Composition And Diversity In Narragansett Bay, Sarah Flickinger

Open Access Master's Theses

Diatoms contribute 40-45% of marine primary production. Understanding the contributions of individual species to diatom communities is important in light of warming ocean waters and changing food webs. Here, the diatom genus Thalassiosira, which exhibits irregular pulses in abundance in Narragansett Bay, is examined using data from the Narragansett Bay Long Term Phytoplankton Time Series. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) at the highly-variable V4 region of the 18S ribosomal gene identified fourteen Thalassiosira taxa in monthly samples over a six-year time period (December 2008-December 2014), seven of which had not previously been identified in this time series. During the same time …

The Abstract Void In Practice: Has The Statutory Business Judgment Rule Changed The ‘Acoustic Separation’ Between Conduct And Decision Rules For Directors’ Duty Of Care?, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci, Jake Miyairi Jan 2016

The Abstract Void In Practice: Has The Statutory Business Judgment Rule Changed The ‘Acoustic Separation’ Between Conduct And Decision Rules For Directors’ Duty Of Care?, Sergio Alberto Gramitto Ricci, Jake Miyairi

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

A recent outpouring of director sentiment claims that the stringency of directors’ duty of care is stifling entrepreneurial growth. This article explores whether the statutory business judgment rule has enhanced directors’ protection for legitimate commercial decisions, or clarified their liability for due care — the two express justifications behind its enactment. Directors’ protection for entrepreneurial decision-making cannot be amplified without broadening the pre-existing abstract void between the duty of care — as a conduct rule — and the general law ‘business judgment principle’ — as a decision rule. But Parliament’s desire to clarify and confirm the existing general law business …

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami Jan 2016

Scaling Up Your Story: An Experiment In Global Knowledge Sharing At The World Bank, Shad Morris, James B. Oldroyd, Sita Ramaswami

Faculty Publications

Timely and effective knowledge transfer is increasingly important in today’s technologically advanced global market. However, a myopic focus on efficiency has frequently rendered most organizational knowledge ineffective. By coupling technology with a formal system that captures informal stories in an engaging and entertaining way, actors within an organization may be more willing to listen to what geographically dispersed colleagues are doing, and may be more likely to ascribe value to that information. Focusing on the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group, we conducted interviews with those sharing and using knowledge, and performed content analyses of 175 knowledge-sharing narratives. …

Optimising Application Performance With Qos Support In Ad Hoc Networks, Jims Marchang Jan 2016

Optimising Application Performance With Qos Support In Ad Hoc Networks, Jims Marchang

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The popularity of wireless communication has increased substantially over the last decade, due to mobility support, flexibility and ease of deployment. Among next generation of mobile communication technologies, Ad Hoc networking plays an important role, since it can stand alone as private network, become a part of public network, either for general use or as part of disaster management scenarios. The performance of multihop Ad Hoc networks is heavily affected by interference, mobility, limited shared bandwidth, battery life, error rate of wireless media, and the presence of hidden and exposed terminals. The scheduler and the Medium Access Control (MAC) play …

Technological University City is not currently recognised as a university under Irish law although it is a member of the European University Association; a process for designation is underway It offers a range of professional-oriented education and research programmes …

‘Food That Disagrees With Me’: An Exploration From A Psychological Perspective., Alexander Wheatley Jan 2016

‘Food That Disagrees With Me’: An Exploration From A Psychological Perspective., Alexander Wheatley

School of Psychology Theses

Food intolerance is a growing concern in the UK given its frequency and cultural popularity. Current medical understanding is at odds with the use of this term by laypeople and in addition health professionals use the term in several ways. The present thesis focused on two main questions: 1. What are people like who report food intolerance? Study 1 showed that food intolerance is a condition that varies, its development, symptoms and the way people interact with and treat the condition is very individualistic. Study 2, showed that inflammatory symptoms were more frequent in the food intolerant population compared to …

Subsequently they received 12 weeks of electronic-only intervention, …

Effort, Luck, And Voting For Redistribution, Lars J. Lefgren, David P. Sims, Olga B. Stoddard Jan 2016

Effort, Luck, And Voting For Redistribution, Lars J. Lefgren, David P. Sims, Olga B. Stoddard

Faculty Publications

We conduct an experiment to determine how the correspondence between economic rewards and effort, as opposed to luck, affects subjects' ex post voting over redistribution. We find that a large, statistically significant proportion of both high- and low-payoff voters are willing to vote contrary to their self-interest in favor of groups that exert proportionately more effort. We confirm these results in an additional, distinct sample. We also show that when subjects' own effort is greater than the group's average effort level, they exhibit greater self interest in voting for redistribution compared to subjects whose effort is below average. Our results …

Institutional Drivers And Barriers To Faculty Adoption Of Blended Learning In Higher Education, Wendy W. Porter, Charles R. Graham Jan 2016

Institutional Drivers And Barriers To Faculty Adoption Of Blended Learning In Higher Education, Wendy W. Porter, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

Relatively little research on blended learning (BL) addresses institutional adoption, although such research would benefit institutions of higher education in strategically adopting and implementing BL. In a prior study, the authors proposed a framework for institutional BL adoption, identifying three stages: (1) awareness/exploration, (2) adoption/early implementation, and (3) mature implementation/growth. The framework also identified key strategy, structure and support issues universities may address at each stage. The current study applies that framework as well as Rogers’ diffusion of innovations theory to determine the degree to which institutional strategy, structure and support decisions facilitate or impede BL adoption among higher education …

Understanding Audit Quality: Insights From Audit Professionals And Investors*, Brant E. Christensen, Steven M. Glover, Thomas C. Omer, Marjorie K. Shelley Jan 2016

Understanding Audit Quality: Insights From Audit Professionals And Investors*, Brant E. Christensen, Steven M. Glover, Thomas C. Omer, Marjorie K. Shelley

Faculty Publications

Projects seeking to define, measure, and evaluate audit quality are on the agendas of auditing standards setters as well as audit firms. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) currently provides information regarding audit quality through the release of inspection reports, and the Board intends to establish and report audit quality indicators. To provide additional perspective on audit quality, we obtain auditors’ and investors’ views, definitions, and indicators of audit quality. We find that investors’ definitions of audit quality focus more on inputs to the audit process than do auditors’, and that investors view the number of PCAOB deficiencies as …

The Affect Of Quantum Phenomena On Media Art (Panel)., Ml Phillips, P Thomas, C Henschke, Wilde F De Jan 2016

The Affect Of Quantum Phenomena On Media Art (Panel)., Ml Phillips, P Thomas, C Henschke, Wilde F De

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This panel will deal with art, media and science via the concept of the ‘spin’ as a fundamental in quantum research where flux and vibration are at the very core. The historical model of media art, science and technology must now include the potential of the quantum phenomena through the emergence of the quantum computer. The subatomic world tantalises us with startling phenomena, but lies deep beneath the surface of human experience, forever hidden from direct observation. Data captured through complex physics experiments reveal quantum behaviours, but unlike scientific meanings constructed to objectively explain such phenomena, the panel will explore …

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani Jan 2016

Gender, Architectural Education, And The Accruing Of Capital, I Troiani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This chapter traces some of the reasons for lack of equal gender progression. It does so through analysis of the relationship between gender and architectural education, from entry to graduation, in order to reveal how the performativity of gender at university influences an individual's prospects to acquire optimal social, cultural, and economic capital in their post-university working life. In the United Kingdom and United States women are now undertaking a vocational architectural education at university at a rate mostly equal to or greater than men. While architecture schools undertake their own internal assessments on gender split and recruitment, there has …

Examining The Factors To Knowledge Sharing Within An Organisational Context, Paul Mc Manus Jan 2016

Examining The Factors To Knowledge Sharing Within An Organisational Context, Paul Mc Manus

Conference papers

Abstract

In a global economy, knowledge may be a company’s greatest competitive advantage (Davenport & Prusak 2000). As such, competition for this resource has driven an increased demand for “a conscious strategy [by organisations] of getting the right knowledge to the right people at the right time and helping people share and put information into action in ways that strive to improve organisational performance” (O’Dell et al. 1998). Thus, it is the aim of this paper to provide an investigative look at the factors influencing the willingness of employees to knowledge share (KS) within an organisational context. Separated into two …

Examining Student And Educator Use Of Digital Technology In An Online World, Wendy Barber, Maurice Digiuseppe, Roland Van Oostveen, Todd Blayone, Jaymie Koroluk

Teaching and Learning in a Digital Context

Over the past thirty years, institutions of higher learning across the world have increasingly embraced digital technology for teaching and learning. Many institutions have begun to offer mobile, hybrid, and online courses and programs for enhanced relevance and accessibility. Universities and colleges employ digital technology through learning management systems for maintaining and processing educational information/records, offering blended/hybrid learning using asynchronous online student/instructor interaction and collaboration, and web conferencing software for synchronous and asynchronous virtual classroom functionality. Thus, it is critical for us to gain a better understanding the nature of these technological changes and the factors affecting the online realities …
