Emerging Tools For Evaluating Safety Management Systems Effectiveness, T. Brady, A. Stolzer Jan 2016

Emerging Tools For Evaluating Safety Management Systems Effectiveness, T. Brady, A. Stolzer

Publications

Safety Management Systems (SMS) have become prevalent in a host of industries, including aviation, for managing safety, but little research has been performed to-date on measuring the effectiveness of SMS. This research examined the independent application of two related concepts to assess effective- ness: IO/SMS, an Input-Output economics concept applied to SMS, and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). Input-Output (IO) is a method for systematically determining the inter-relationships among ele- ments in a system. To determine if IO could be applied to SMS, it was necessary to calculate the relative importance to the system of the four components of SMS. Five …

Qoe-Driven Lte Downlink Scheduling For Multimedia Services, Ali Alfayly Jan 2016

Qoe-Driven Lte Downlink Scheduling For Multimedia Services, Ali Alfayly

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The significant growth in multimedia services and traffic (e.g. VoIP, video streaming and video gaming) in current and emerging mobile networks including the latest 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) networks and the rising user expectation for high Quality of Experience (QoE) for these services have posed real challenges to network operators and service providers. One of the key challenges is how to bring multimedia services to the end-user over resource-constrained mobile networks with a satisfactory QoE. Cost-effective solutions are needed for network operators to improve the bandwidth usage of these mobile networks. Therefore, scheduling schemes are of extreme importance in LTE, …

Framework For Automated Functional Tests Within Value-Added Service Environments, Patrick Wacht Jan 2016

Framework For Automated Functional Tests Within Value-Added Service Environments, Patrick Wacht

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Recent years have witnessed that standard telecommunication services evolved more and more to next generation value-added services. This fact is accompanied by a change of service characteristics as new services are designed to fulfil the customer’s demands instead of just focussing on technologies and protocols. These demands can be very specific and, therefore, diverse potential service functionalities have to be considered by the service providers. To make matters worse for service providers, a fast transition from concept to market product and low price of a new service is required due to the increasing competition in the telecommunication industry. Therefore, effective …

Ced After #Ows: From Community Economic Development To Anti-Authoritarian Community Counter-Institutions, Michael Haber Jan 2016

Ced After #Ows: From Community Economic Development To Anti-Authoritarian Community Counter-Institutions, Michael Haber

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Community Economic Development (“CED”) and community-based social justice non-profits more generally have been criticized by social justice lawyers, legal scholars, practitioners, and activists, who charge that these efforts too often overlook the structural drivers of inequality, strip social justice movements of their confrontational, activist politics, and fail to give community members meaningful control over their programs. Over the past decades, anti-authoritarian activists — perhaps most famously known through Occupy Wall Street — have developed new frameworks for social change movements based on philosophical commitments to horizontalism, autonomism, and prefigurative politics. Many anti-authoritarian activists have turned their attention to creating community-based …

Branded, Irina D. Manta Jan 2016

Branded, Irina D. Manta

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Marks are traditionally said to serve three functions that are separate from the goals of other forms of IP: source identification, advertising, and guarantee of quality. The story, however, that patents and copyrights incentivize creation and that trademarks do not fulfill that purpose does not withstand scrutiny. This Article argues that brands have evolved in such a way that they serve important incentivizing purposes of their own, and that trademark law influences their ability to do so. This Article identifies three generally neglected functions of trademarks. The first pertains to the creation of original, unique marks and brands in and …

Urban Farming In The North American Metropolis: Rethinking Work And Distance In Alternative Food Networks, Diana Mincyte, Karin Dobernig Jan 2016

Urban Farming In The North American Metropolis: Rethinking Work And Distance In Alternative Food Networks, Diana Mincyte, Karin Dobernig

Publications and Research

This article examines the role of manual work in bridging the distance between production and consumption in alternative agro-food economies, particularly in urban farming. Scholars and public commentators often draw on Marxian theories of alienation to suggest that manual work constitutes a key strategy for reconnecting production and consumption, and overcoming the ecological rift between natural processes and modern, agro-industrial production. Focusing on urban farming, this article complicates the picture of unalienated, decommodified labor and points to continuous negotiations between experiences of re-embedding in the community and the environment, and the on-going commodification of the farming experience. We argue that …

Insatiability And Crisis: Using Interdisciplinarity To Understand (And Denaturalize) Contemporary Humans, Sean P. Macdonald, Costas Panayotakis Jan 2016

Insatiability And Crisis: Using Interdisciplinarity To Understand (And Denaturalize) Contemporary Humans, Sean P. Macdonald, Costas Panayotakis

Publications and Research

This chapter illustrates how collaboration between different social sciences can encourage students to think critically about prevailing assumptions regarding human nature. Both the chapter and the pedagogical experience on which it is based investigate the distinctive type of human created by capitalist society. In so doing, it takes a heterodox approach to analyzing the concept of an insatiable human nature through a case study that invites students to critically assess this perspective. This discussion then leads to an investigation and critique of traditional neoclassical Economic assumptions about human behavior, which forms the basis for a case study on the causes …

The School of Health Sciences Publications and Research

An attempt is made, herein, to reconcile, and integrate, various phenomena associated with magnesium deficiency (MgD) in cardiovascular health, disease, and aging as well as reasons for the high incidence of sudden cardiac death in infants and young adults. With new experiments, we demonstrate, for the first time, that very low concentrations of platelet-activating factor (PAF), when added to primary cultured cerebral, neonatal coronary, and aortic vascular smooth muscle (VSM) cells (from three different mammals) promote rapid rises in free intracellular Ca2+ ions and a significant, concomitant reduction in free intracellular Mg2+ ions; these actions of PAF being curtailed with …

The jobs most vulnerable are those that involve repetitive tasks and relatively little judgment. Those holding these jobs can be replaced by robots or machines utilizing artificial intelligence.

The Moral Price Of The Profit Motive In Medicine, John Sobieski Jan 2016

The Moral Price Of The Profit Motive In Medicine, John Sobieski

Honors Theses

The profit motive in medicine, which is the desire to maximize pecuniary profit as a primary motivation in patient care, is unethical. Regardless of whether the functional body outputting a medical profit motive is a physician, a group of physicians, or a large hospital, proper medical care should not be undermined by a desire for monetary gain. To say that medical care should not concern itself with money (i.e. costs, budgets) would be foolish; rather, I am asserting that treating medicine like any other business is disrespectful to the core values that predicate patient care. Human health is too important …

A Change Of Heart : The Effect Of Heartwarming Advertisements On Brand Affinity, Hannah Butman Jan 2016

A Change Of Heart : The Effect Of Heartwarming Advertisements On Brand Affinity, Hannah Butman

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine if evoking heartfelt responses to advertisements would yield greater brand affinity. It was hypothesized that a heartwarming response would yield greater brand affinity because it was a mixed emotional experience that produced both positive and negative emotions simultaneously. Across two studies, participants were shown both control and heartwarming advertisements for five brands. After each video, all participants were prompted to respond to every measure, regardless of condition. Heartwarming perceptions of the advertisements, overlap of self, feelings of love, and a mixed emotional experience were all significant mediators of video condition and brand …

The Protective Role Of Mlcp-Mediated Erm Dephosphorylation In Endotoxin-Induced Lung Injury In Vitro And In Vivo, Anita Kovacs-Kasa, Boris A. Gorshkov, Kyung-Mi Kim, Sanjiv Kumar, Stephen M. Black, David J. Fulton, Christiana Dimitropoulou, John D. Catravas, Alexander D. Verin

Bioelectrics Publications

The goal of this study was to investigate the role of MLC phosphatase (MLCP) in a LPS model of acute lung injury (ALI). We demonstrate that ectopic expression of a constitutively-active (C/A) MLCP regulatory subunit (MYPT1) attenuates the ability of LPS to increase endothelial (EC) permeability. Down-regulation of MYPT1 exacerbates LPS-induced expression of ICAM1 suggesting an anti-inflammatory role of MLCP. To determine whether MLCP contributes to LPS-induced ALI in vivo, we utilized a nanoparticle DNA delivery method to specifically target lung EC. Expression of a C/A MYPT1 reduced LPS-induced lung inflammation and vascular permeability. Further, increased expression of the …

Effects Of High Voltage Nanosecond Electric Pulses On Eukaryotic Cells (In Vitro): A Systematic Review, Tina Batista Napotink, Matej Reberšek, P. Thomas Vernier, Babara Mali, Damijan Miklavčič

Bioelectrics Publications

For this systematic review, 203 published reports on effects of electroporation using nanosecond high-voltage electric pulses (nsEP) on eukaryotic cells (human, animal, plant) in vitro were analyzed. A field synopsis summarizes current published data in the field with respect to publication year, cell types, exposure configuration, and pulse duration. Published data were analyzed for effects observed in eight main target areas (plasma membrane, intracellular, apoptosis, calcium level and distribution, survival, nucleus, mitochondria, stress) and an additional 107 detailed outcomes. We statistically analyzed effects of nsEP with respect to three pulse duration groups: A: 1–10 ns, B: 11–100 ns and C: …

Nanosecond Pulsed Platelet-Rich Plasma (Nsprp) Improves Mechanical And Electrial Cardiac Function Following Myocardial Reperfusion Injury, Barbara Y. Hargrave, Frency Varghese, Nektarios Barabutis, John Catravas, Christian Zemlin Jan 2016

Nanosecond Pulsed Platelet-Rich Plasma (Nsprp) Improves Mechanical And Electrial Cardiac Function Following Myocardial Reperfusion Injury, Barbara Y. Hargrave, Frency Varghese, Nektarios Barabutis, John Catravas, Christian Zemlin

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications

Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) of the heart is associated with biochemical and ionic changes that result in cardiac contractile and electrical dysfunction. In rabbits, platelet-rich plasma activated using nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPRP) has been shown to improve left ventricular pumping. Here, we demonstrate that nsPRP causes a similar improvement in mouse left ventricular function. We also show that nsPRP injection recovers electrical activity even before reperfusion begins. To uncover the mechanism of nsPRP action, we studied whether the enhanced left ventricular function in nsPRP rabbit and mouse hearts was associated with increased expression of heat-shock proteins and altered mitochondrial …

Transformation Of Heroes In Film, Allison Connelly Toner Jan 2016

Transformation Of Heroes In Film, Allison Connelly Toner

Honors Theses

Heroes research is not a new field, and it is widely accepted that in order for a hero to be accepted as such, he or she must undertake a journey during which he or she transforms in some marked way. The aim of this research is to understand the nature of that transformation in terms of 24 character strengths. This was achieved by watching the top grossing films of all time adjusted for inflation and coding for the transformation of the protagonists on a 1-5 scale. Ten traits were found to have a mean transformation of 1 point or greater, …

Singular Spaces: The Power And The Passion Of Spanish Art Environments, Jo Farb Hernandez Jan 2016

Singular Spaces: The Power And The Passion Of Spanish Art Environments, Jo Farb Hernandez

Faculty Publications

The art environments of Spain – like those the world over – display an astounding conceptual creativity and a vernacular, seat-of-the-pants approach to construction that makes use of locally available found, natural, and recycled objects as well as fabricated components built from scratch. Each result is unique, revealing each creator-builder’s interests, challenges, and concerns as they have developed over the course of a lifetime; as such, it is easy to understand why art environments are so complex. And because we are able to physically enter into and explore the constructions as visitors, we complete the artworks in the same way …

Popularity Prediction Of Reddit Texts, Tracy Rohlin Jan 2016

Popularity Prediction Of Reddit Texts, Tracy Rohlin

Master's Theses

Popularity prediction is a useful technique for marketers to anticipate the success of marketing campaigns, to build recommendation systems that suggest new products to consumers, and to develop targeted advertising. Researchers likewise use popularity prediction to measure how popularity changes within a community or within a given timespan. In this paper, I explore ways to predict popularity of posts in reddit.com, which is a blend of news aggregator and community forum. I frame popularity prediction as a text classification problem and attempt to solve it by first identifying topics in the text and then classifying whether the topics identified are …

Interacting At A Distance: Creating Engagement In Online Learning Environments, Robert L. Moore Jan 2016

Interacting At A Distance: Creating Engagement In Online Learning Environments, Robert L. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Effective online instruction requires understanding not only interaction but also how to facilitate interaction through technology (Moore & Kearsley, 2012). Specifically, Moore and Kearsley (2012) categorize these types of interactions as "learner with content, interaction with instruction [or] interaction with other learners" (p. 132). This chapter examines each of these interaction types and suggests ways to incorporate them into online learning environments (OLEs). The chapter provides techniques and approaches that will be beneficial to both instructional design practitioners and online instructors. It seeks to assuage some of the concerns that faculty have about OLEs and provides ideas and activities that …

Developing Distance Education Content Using The Tappa Process, Robert L. Moore Jan 2016

Developing Distance Education Content Using The Tappa Process, Robert L. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The proliferation of distance education has occurred alongside the emerging technologies of the Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 environments, changing the way instructors approach, design, and deliver their instructional materials. In the past, instructional design (ID) practitioners relied on instruction system design (ISD) models that focused primarily on macroinstruction. It is now important for these practitioners to use microinstruction strategies to keep pace with the technology evolution. This case study describes the TAPPA (Target, Accomplishment, Past, Prototype, Artifact) Process which was created using the Generic Model for Design Research (GMDR) proposed by McKenney and Reeves (2012) and uses selected ID …

Supporting Documentation Of Informal Learning And Making From A Distance With Voicethread, Kevin Oliver, Robert L. Moore Jan 2016

Supporting Documentation Of Informal Learning And Making From A Distance With Voicethread, Kevin Oliver, Robert L. Moore

STEMPS Faculty Publications

This best practices session and paper describes the incorporation of Voicethread as a tool for supporting design documentation of makerspace projects among graduate distance education students in a course on informal learning. All students successfully utilized the tool to present photographic and video evidence of design processes with oral annotations, and received clarifications and feedback from peers. Students reported positive affordances of the tool in terms of marking up slides to communicate particular design decisions, sharing video as "proof" of successfully completing a particular make project and as exemplars of makers’ problem solving and thinking, documenting a linear process with …

Preservation: Competently Navigating Between All And Nothing, Lauren Wheeling Waller Jan 2016

Preservation: Competently Navigating Between All And Nothing, Lauren Wheeling Waller

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Merriam-Webster defines "competent" as "having requisite or adequate ability or qualities."' All professions require competence to be successful-from chefs, to tailors, to NFL quarterbacks. Without the adequate ability to poach an egg, alter suits, or read defenses, they lose patrons, customers, or-in the case of a quarterback-games and fans. Lawyers are no different. Without competence, they may not be successful. However, lawyers are different than the NFL quarterback in that they have an explicit duty of competence to their clients.
