The mining of lead and zinc ores in the Tri-State Mining District of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma resulted in some of the most severe environmental degradation in the country. Large amounts of waste rock, known as ‘chat’, were produced during mining and left in surface piles in the surrounding area. These chat piles, located mostly near the town of Picher, Oklahoma contain potentially harmful elements that can be leached from the rock into local streams and sediment. The mines also filled with water after mining ceased and have discharged contaminated water to nearby waterways, as well as resulted in groundwater …

Theses and Dissertations
This study attempted to disentangle the various depictions of Black hair and its fight for social acceptance. The research covered various stigmas associated with natural hair in the African American culture. Several books pertaining to the topic agreed that African Americans suffered from terrible depictions of themselves through various media sources of its era. Advertisements made their mark by preying on those with beauty insecurities. Black-owned businesses also capitalized on African American’s beauty insecurities. The study was accompanied by a pictorial exhibit and displayed at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Research suggested that in order for mainstream to …

University Student-Athletes’ Experiences Of Facilitators And Barriers To Contribution: A Narrative Account, Colin J. Deal, Martin Camiré
The Qualitative Report
University student-athletes’ contributions in the form of volunteering, community engagement, and civic engagement have been the subject of recent research; however, no studies have specifically examined the factors that facilitate or serve as barriers to contribution in this population. As such, the purpose of this study is to explore the facilitators and barriers relating to university student-athletes’ contributions. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight university student-athletes (two males, six females) between 18 and 21 years of age (M = 19.25) from two Canadian universities. The analysis led to the identification of two qualitatively distinct profiles regarding how facilitators and …

Longshoremen's Negotiation Of Masculinity And The Middle Class In 1950s Popular Culture, Tomaro I. Taylor
Longshoremen's Negotiation Of Masculinity And The Middle Class In 1950s Popular Culture, Tomaro I. Taylor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis considers mid-20th century portrayals of working-class longshoremen’s masculinity within the context of emerging middle-class gender constructions. I argue that although popular culture presents a roughly standardized depiction of longshoremen as “manly men,” these portrayals are significantly nuanced to demonstrate the difficulties working-class men faced as they attempted to navigate socio-cultural and socio-economic shifts related to class and the performance of their male gender. Specifically, I consider depictions of longshoremen’s disruptive masculinity, male identity formation, and masculine-male growth as reactions to paradigmatic shifts in American masculinity. Using three aspects of longshoremen’s non-work lives presented in A View from …

Problems Of Multi-Species Organisms: Endosymbionts To Holobionts, David C. Queller, Joan E. Strassmann
Biology Faculty Research
The organism is one of the fundamental concepts of biology and has been at the center of many discussions about biological individuality, yet what exactly it is can be confusing. The definition that we find generally useful is that an organism is a unit in which all the subunits have evolved to be highly cooperative, with very little conflict. We focus on how often organisms evolve from two or more formerly independent organisms. Two canonical transitions of this type—replicators clustered in cells and endosymbiotic organelles within host cells—demonstrate the reality of this kind of evolutionary transition and suggest conditions that …

Electronic Service Of Process: A Practical And Affordable Option, Annie Chen
Electronic Service Of Process: A Practical And Affordable Option, Annie Chen
Cornell Law School J.D. Student Research Papers
It is not enough that courts have the ability to exercise control over persons and property. The Supreme Court has held that at a minimum, the due process requirement of the Fourteenth Amendment includes notice of the proceedings] Thus before a State can legitimately exercise such power its jurisdiction must be perfected by effectuated service of process. Service of process is the formal presentation of instruments that initiate legal action against a person or property. It is the method by which a defendant is formally notified that an action against her is pending and marks the beginning of a …

“Sparks Fly ”: Connecting Midwestern Historic Forts Through A Comparative Study Of Gunflints, Jeffrey A. Spanbauer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will outline the temporal changes and choices of colonial powers and individuals as expressed at historic frontier posts in the Midwest between 1683 and 1779 as expressed through their supply and usage of gunflints. Gunflints exist as persistent artifacts at historic sites, and especially so at fortifications like Fort de Chartres, Fort St. Joseph, Fort Michilimackinac and Fort Ouiatenon. These sites exist within the same chronological timeframe, from 1690-1780, and saw occupation by both the French and British, with nearby indigenous groups, and should serve as instructive means to investigate the factors involved in the supply, selection, and …

Correlates Of Satisfaction With Life For People Who Identify As Transgender And Sexual Minority, Christopher C. Bober, Kristen L. Suing, Dustin K. Shepler
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Researchers have focused on understanding factors such as resiliency, medical concerns, and coping skills in the lives of transgender and gender-nonconforming people. However, little research has examined how transgender and gender-nonconforming people cognitively evaluate their own lives. Furthermore, many people who identify as transgender or gender-nonconforming also report a sexual minority identity status. In this study, we sought to understand how aspects of sexual self-concept (i.e., sexual esteem and sexual anxiety), internalized homonegativity, and level of outness about sexual identity correlated to self-appraisals of satisfaction with life (SWL) in a sample of transgender and gender-nonconforming people who identified as sexual …

Distributed Audience Lists, David Pattison
Defensive Publications Series
This document describes a technique for storing and retrieving audience lists in a distributed manner by using a blockchain. Script executed by a user device can generate a pair of public and private keys for a user. The user can sign a message containing the public key and other information using the private key and upload the message to a blockchain corresponding to an audience list. A data processing system can search the blockchain for the public key and utilizing the information in the audience list maintained using the blockchain to better serve the user.

In some computing environments, provisioning can be difficult. Disclosed is a technique where through orchestrating a BMC, a service OS, and a system management console such as Intelligent Provisioning, the addition of a media item such as a USB key or DVD can trigger a guided install or update process for a naïve user to perform operations that would otherwise be far too complicated.

Teaching In The Cracks: Using Familiar Pedagogy To Advance Lgbtq-Inclusive Curriculum, Michelle L. Page
Education Publications
English language arts teachers and other literacy educators have the opportunity to create more positive and more inclusive school experiences for gender‐ and sexual‐minority students, but many hesitate to transform their curricula and practices because of fear of community protest. To support educators who feel vulnerable or constrained, this article summarizes challenges facing gender‐ and sexual‐minority students and then describes the benefits and limitations of a variety of familiar instructional approaches that teachers can use to make curricula more inclusive, ultimately reducing isolation and invisibility of LGBTQIA students and experiences.

The United States currently ranks 25th in the world for stillbirths and 26th for infant mortality rate. The rate of these deaths is more than half of other developed countries, and what is more troubling is that the numbers aren’t decreasing at a rate that shows any indication of real change. Many attribute this lack of progress to the shockingly absent research in the subject of stillbirths.
This research explored the issue of pregnancy loss, specifically stillbirth losses. This research was done in an effort to address how little pregnancy loss is reported on and researched. In addition, …

It's Just One Of Those Gender Role Things: The Woman Does The Shopping, And The Man Fixes The Doors: Irish Advertising Students And Postfeminist Gendered Discourses, Aileen O'Driscoll
Irish Communication Review
In 2010 the European Commission published a report outlining its official position on ‘Breaking gender stereotypes in Media’ thereby explicitly recognising that advertising’s dissemination of images that depict gender stereotyping works to uphold gender inequalities. In addition, the European Coalition against Media Sexism (WECAMS) has engaged with the European Parliament and the European Advertising Standards Alliance in a bid to open up discussion on the possibility for standardising guidelines aimed at tackling and preventing sexism and gender stereotyping in advertising. Furthermore, over a more than forty-year history feminist media research has consistently pointed to problematic gendered imagery in advertising texts …
Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan
Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan
Irish Communication Review
This paper examines language ideological change in the Irish context through a longitudinal analysis of accent choice in a corpus of radio ads from 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007. The analysis is based on Sussex’s (1989) ad components of Action and Comment. The Action component is generally comprised of contextual dialogic interaction and associated with discourses of ‘everyday informal interaction’ while the Comment component, often associated with the slogan of the ad, tends to be monologic and decontextualised and is associated with discourses of ‘power and authority’ (Lee, 1992). The use of standard British English accent features, particularly in …

In Search Of Identity: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Guinness's Advertising And Ireland's Social And Economic Evolution Between 1959 And 1969, Patricia Medcalf
Irish Communication Review
This paper analyses the first decade of ads published and broadcast by Guinness in Ireland. The period is 1959 to 1969, a time that marked the start of significant change in Irish society. It is argued here that the messages in the adverts chronicle many of these changes. Seismic shifts in government economic policy coincided with the 200th anniversary of the foundation of the Guinness brewery. The ensuing lift in the economy’s fortunes is mirrored in many ads, as are some of the demographic changes, such as rising marriage rates and falling birth rates, and an expanding middle class. …
