Lexicon Knowledge Extraction With Sentiment Polarity Computation, Zhaoxia Wang, Vincent Joo Chuan Tong, Pingcheng Ruan, Fang Li Dec 2016

Lexicon Knowledge Extraction With Sentiment Polarity Computation, Zhaoxia Wang, Vincent Joo Chuan Tong, Pingcheng Ruan, Fang Li

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sentiment analysis is one of the most popular natural language processing techniques. It aims to identify the sentiment polarity (positive, negative, neutral or mixed) within a given text. The proper lexicon knowledge is very important for the lexicon-based sentiment analysis methods since they hinge on using the polarity of the lexical item to determine a text's sentiment polarity. However, it is quite common that some lexical items appear positive in the text of one domain but appear negative in another. In this paper, we propose an innovative knowledge building algorithm to extract sentiment lexicon knowledge through computing their polarity value …

Traversing The Borders Of Écriture Migrante And Transnational Writing In Québec, Catherine Khordoc Dec 2016

Traversing The Borders Of Écriture Migrante And Transnational Writing In Québec, Catherine Khordoc

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Traversing the Borders of écriture migrante and Transnational Writing in Québec" Catherine Khordoc questions the relevance of the term écriture migrante, which has become a type of ghetto for writers who have immigrated, creating an implicit expectation that immigrant writers write exclusively about experiences of immigration and exile. She proposes a transnational approach as an alternative way of considering contemporary Québécois writing, examining works written by immigrants alongside works by non-immigrants. She discusses four novels, two by authors who have immigrated to Québec (Émile Ollivier and Dany Laferrière), and two by authors who were born and raised in …

Competing Visions And Current Debates In Interculturalism In Québec, Marie Mcandrew Dec 2016

Competing Visions And Current Debates In Interculturalism In Québec, Marie Mcandrew

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Competing Visions and Current Debates in Interculturalism in Québec" Marie McAndrew posits that interculturalism is the quest for a middle path between Canadian multiculturalism (criticized for essentializing and isolating cultures) and French Jacobinism (which relegates diversity to the private sphere). The theoretical underpinnings of the three approaches are first compared using major works in political philosophy, sociology of ethnic relations, and social psychology. The polysemic nature of actual policies is then explored through the example of Québec's immigration society where two versions of interculturalism developed since the late 1970s and are still competing. McAndrew analyzes four recent …

Staging Famine Irish Memories Of Migration And National Performance In Ireland And Québec, Jason King Dec 2016

Staging Famine Irish Memories Of Migration And National Performance In Ireland And Québec, Jason King

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In "Staging Famine Irish Memories of Migration and National Performance in Ireland and Québec" Jason King examines recent community theater productions about the Irish Famine migration to Québec in 1847. King explores community-based and national ideas of performance and the role of remembrance in shaping and transmitting the diasporic identities of Québec's Irish cultural minority. While most of the plays re-enact French-Canadian adoptions of Famine orphans as spectacles of Irish integration in Québec, David Fennario's Joe Beef: (A History of Pointe Saint Charles) (1984, published 1991) rehearses the history of the Canadian/Québec nation in terms of recurrent labor exploitation epitomized …

Postcolonial Writing In France Before And Beyond The 2007 Littérature-Monde Manifesto, Myriam Louviot Dec 2016

Postcolonial Writing In France Before And Beyond The 2007 Littérature-Monde Manifesto, Myriam Louviot

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Postcolonial Writing in France before and beyond the 2007 Littérature-monde Manifesto" Myriam Louviot discusses the evolution of postcolonial writing in France. She argues that postcolonial writers often face great difficulty in achieving recognition as legitimate French authors. Louviot suggests that restrictive boundaries of categorization have started to become blurred but that it is still too early to rejoice, partly due to the continuing cultural ghettoization of many of these writers and the traditional differentiation of their work from French literature. Louviot discusses in detail the 2007 Pour une "littérature-monde" en français initiated by Michel Le Bris and …

Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider Dec 2016

Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Young People's Literature of Algerian Immigration in France" Anne Schneider discusses questions of language, hybridity, and heritage in some works for young people published in France about Algeria and/or Algerian-French identity, by Leïla Sebbar, Jean-Paul Nozière, Azouz Begag, and Michel Piquemal. She argues for the need for an intercultural education at primary school that uses literature about immigration to highlight questions of place, belonging, exile and language. Schneider's focus is on Begag's Un train pour chez nous (2001) and Piquemal's Mon miel, ma douceur (2004). These texts use linguistic hybridity and an emphasis on common human experiences …

Doppler Temperature Coefficient Calculations Using Adjoint-Weighted Tallies And Continuous-Energy Cross Sections In Mcnp6, Matthew A. Gonzales Dec 2016

Doppler Temperature Coefficient Calculations Using Adjoint-Weighted Tallies And Continuous-Energy Cross Sections In Mcnp6, Matthew A. Gonzales

Nuclear Engineering ETDs

The calculation of the thermal neutron Doppler temperature reactivity feedback co- efficient, a key parameter in the design and safe operation of advanced reactors, using first order perturbation theory in continuous energy Monte Carlo codes is challenging as the continuous energy adjoint flux is not readily available. Traditional approaches of obtaining the adjoint flux attempt to invert the random walk process as well as require data corresponding to all temperatures and their respective tem- perature derivatives within the system in order to accurately calculate the Doppler temperature feedback.

A new method has been developed using adjoint-weighted tallies and On-The-Fly (OTF) …

Design Optimization Of Acoustic Metamaterials And Phononic Crystals With A Time Domain Method, Weiyang Lin Dec 2016

Design Optimization Of Acoustic Metamaterials And Phononic Crystals With A Time Domain Method, Weiyang Lin

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

A time-dependent adjoint approach for obtaining sensitivity derivatives for shape optimizations of acoustic metamaterials and phononic crystals is presented. The gradient-based design procedure is suitable for large numbers of design variables, and results are shown on achieving effective material properties with a unit cell and the broadband noise reduction with periodic arrays of cylinders. The acoustic wave propagation problem is solved in the time-domain using a Streamline Upwind/Petrov Galerkin formulation. Topology parameterization is accomplished using the homogenization method, and shape optimization is subsequently used afterwards to refine the geometries. Surface parameterization is accomplished using control grids, which are based on …

Here, In This Place: An Essay Collection, Meghan M. O'Dea

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The personal essay is difficult to define in part because of the diversity of structures and subjects that can fall under this category within creative nonfiction. Defining the form in terms of the fragment, specifically the fragment as it was envisioned by Romantic philosophers, acknowledges the contemporary personal essay’s roots in both ancient literature and the Essais of Michel de Montaigne, as well as its modernist and postmodernist evolution. The creative portion of this thesis consists of a collection of essays by Meghan O’Dea entitled Here, In This Place. The introductory essay discusses how the theory of the fragment applies …

Consent Confusion, Aya Gruber Dec 2016

Consent Confusion, Aya Gruber

Cardozo Law Review

The slogans are ubiquitous: "Only 'Yes' Means 'Yes"'" "Got Consent?", "Consent is Hot, Assault is Not!" Clear consent is the rule, but the meaning of sexual consent is far from clear. The current state of confusion is evident in the numerous competing views about what constitutes mental agreement (grudging acceptance or eager desire?) and what comprises performative consent (passive acquiescence or an enthusiastic "yes"?). This paper seeks to clear up the consent confusion. It charts the contours of the sexual consent framework, categorizes different definitions of affirmative consent, and critically describes arguments for and against affirmative consent. Today's widespread uncertainty …

The Application Of Chitosan On An Experimental Infection Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans Increases Survival In Little Brown Bats, Torin C. Kulhanek Dec 2016

The Application Of Chitosan On An Experimental Infection Of Pseudogymnoascus Destructans Increases Survival In Little Brown Bats, Torin C. Kulhanek

Masters Theses

This research builds upon a previous study conducted that tested the efficacy of chitosan on experimentally-infected bats as a laboratory model of White-nose syndrome. White-nose syndrome is a fungal infection caused by Pseudogymnoascus destructans, formerly known as Geomyces destructans. The pathology of this disease is not yet fully understood, but it is devastating bats throughout Northeastern America and continues to spread. Here we tested multiple application time points and concentrations of chitosan on the wings of experimentally-infected bats and compared them with the controls. We grossly viewed the wings first to get a sense of the amount of …

Convict Criminology And The Struggle For Inclusion, Jeffery Rose, Richard S. Jones, Michael Lenza, Stephen C. Richards Dec 2016

Convict Criminology And The Struggle For Inclusion, Jeffery Rose, Richard S. Jones, Michael Lenza, Stephen C. Richards

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Convict Criminology (CC) began in the early 1990s as a reaction to the then current state of academic criminology that did not adequately reflect the voices of convicted felons. Since its beginnings, CC has attempted to draw attention to a range of problems created by the criminal justice apparatus and defenders of the status quo. Dr. Joanne Belknap’s 2014 ASC presidential address and subsequent article presented an argument that stressed the importance of activism to be considered as part of criminological research. In the process, she reviewed her career and then criticized the field of Critical Criminology, in particular Convict …

A Biologically Active Tnf-Alpha Inhibitor Fails To Suppress Colitis In Balb/C Mice, Stephanie E. Biel Dec 2016

A Biologically Active Tnf-Alpha Inhibitor Fails To Suppress Colitis In Balb/C Mice, Stephanie E. Biel

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Tumor necrosis factor a (TNFα), a potent inflammatory cytokine, has long been established as a major driving force for pathologic inflammation. Currently, anti-TNFα therapies are the standard in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) management; however, one-third of IBD patients fail to respond to anti-TNFα therapies. Previous data from this lab indicate that TNFα Converting Enzyme (TACE) inhibition does not ameliorate colitis in BALB/C mice. Thus, we hypothesized that TNFα is not a critical component in the BALB/C model of colitis. To test this, acute colitis was induced in BALB/C mice by consumption of 5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water …

Assessment As A Learning Tool In A Flipped English Language Classroom In Higher Education, Rania M Rafik Khalil Dec 2016

Assessment As A Learning Tool In A Flipped English Language Classroom In Higher Education, Rania M Rafik Khalil

English Language and Literature

Flipped teaching is a pedagogical model in which the roles of the instructor and the students in a flipped context are redefined. Within this unique pedagogical context, researchers suggest that, in order to maximize the learning process for students, assessment should follow a student-centered approach (Talbert, 2015; Honeycutt & Garrett, 2014).Utilising assessment as a learning tool through layering and scaffolding in the flipped context engages students in the learning process, encourages continuous assessment of student learning, creates opportunities for implementing critical thinking, helps students gain a deeper understanding of concepts, allows formative feedback and eventually yields improved outcomes. This formative …

The Economic Impacts Of Undocumented Immigrants In The United States, Abdulaziz Alangari Dec 2016

The Economic Impacts Of Undocumented Immigrants In The United States, Abdulaziz Alangari

Honors Papers and Posters

There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., of which all are not granted a work permit. Thus, in order to survive, these immigrants seek jobs that do not require legal status but have wages significantly lower than minimum. In short, by having these immigrants work in low-wage jobs, the U.S. economy benefits by providing a diverse market to U.S. residents and thus creates a vast economy. My research paper will be talking about how the presence of undocumented immigrants is a significant factor in creating and shaping the diverse U.S. economy.

Yeast Dynamin Associates With The Garp Tethering Complex For Endosome-To-Golgi Traffic, Uma Saimani Dec 2016

Yeast Dynamin Associates With The Garp Tethering Complex For Endosome-To-Golgi Traffic, Uma Saimani

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Yeast dynamin, Vacuolar Protein Sorting 1 (Vps1), has been implicated in recycling proteins and lipids from the endosome to the trans-Golgi network (TGN). Previous research showed a genetic interaction of Vps1 with all components of the GARP tethering complex, which anchors vesicles at the late Golgi membrane. I used the yeast two-hybrid system and pinpointed a 33 amino acid segment of Vps51, a GARP subunit, that interacts with Vps1. Based on sequence homology between Vps51 and its mammalian homolog ANG2 in the 33 amino acid stretch, I identified two key residues of Vps51, E127, and Y129, that bind Vps1. The …

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Many children today may not be familiar with nature due to lack of experience and education in the outdoors. If they are not exposed to nature, then they will not be as comfortable in the outdoors. This study evaluates the effectiveness of educational activities at the Watershed Center in Springfield, Missouri on high school students' and college level pre-service teachers' knowledge, comfort levels, attitudes, and actions toward the outdoor environment. Post-field trip responses of students who came to the Watershed Center were compared to students who did not participate in a field trip. Teachers were also surveyed to assess why …

Ethicality Of Advisor Motives In Academic Advising: Faculty, Staff, And Student Perspectives, Xiafei Xue Dec 2016

Ethicality Of Advisor Motives In Academic Advising: Faculty, Staff, And Student Perspectives, Xiafei Xue

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Advising is an important aspect in academic settings. While the literature has emphasized better academic advising, including the personal qualities of good advisors, there has been little emphasis on ethical issues and ethical concerns related to advisors' roles or positions. The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) provides a set of core values to guide ethical behavior. The current study examined (in an experimental design) faculty, staff, and student perspectives regarding advisors' more ethical, neutral, or less ethical behaviors. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between faculty and staff. All groups could differentiate between ethical and unethical extremes, but …

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore Dec 2016

“Frames” And Bias: How A Lack Of Context In Middle East News Coverage Can Impact U.S. Foreign Policy, Jennifer Lois Moore

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis is a critical examination into how American mainstream news media outlets often neglect to incorporate religious, cultural and historical context into their coverage of the Middle East. I show through my research and analysis that the news coverage of the Middle East, even at the highest echelons of American journalism, is often lacking in sophistication in terms of cultural and religious context, sometimes to the point of affecting its fairness and accuracy. The danger of this is that it has the power to grossly simplify and reduce to an “us versus them” frame an entire contingent of the …
