Reading Strategies Used By High School Japanese Language Learners, Tomoki Kuwana Dec 2016

Reading Strategies Used By High School Japanese Language Learners, Tomoki Kuwana

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

World Readiness Standards emphasize the importance of language learners' proficiency in literacy as well as life skills in contemporary society and future. Implementing authentic materials into language instruction is encouraged due to its benefits. Yet adaption of authentic materials for reading is usually delayed until higher-level classes in Japanese instruction at secondary levels. This is often due to the Japanese writing system, which is a combination of hiragana, katakana, and kanji and configures meaning of a sentence. The present study investigated to what extent Japanese as a foreign language (JFL) high school learners use reading strategies when they read authentic …

Beyond Financial Need: Predictors Of Student Loans And Student Loan Attitudes, Jill M. Norvilitis, Meghan J. Batt Dec 2016

Beyond Financial Need: Predictors Of Student Loans And Student Loan Attitudes, Jill M. Norvilitis, Meghan J. Batt

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Although public concern about student loan debt has been increasing, little research has examined predictors of debt beyond financial need or demographic factors. The present study explored the role of several psychological and attitudinal variables in student loan debt among 189 college students. Results indicate that loan initiative and loan resignation attitudes predicted level of student loan debt. In addition, locus of control, delay of gratification, and social comparison are also related to loans and loan attitudes. Parental instruction marginally predicted loan attitudes, but not loan totals. Overall, these results suggest the need to consider non-need based factors when counseling …

A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz Dec 2016

A Traders Guide To The Predictive Universe- A Model For Predicting Oil Price Targets And Trading On Them, Jimmie Harold Lenz

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

At heart every trader loves volatility; this is where return on investment comes from, this is what drives the proverbial “positive alpha.” As a trader, understanding the probabilities related to the volatility of prices is key, however if you could also predict future prices with reliability the world would be your oyster. To this end, I have achieved three goals with this dissertation, to develop a model to predict future short term prices (direction and magnitude), to effectively test this by generating consistent profits utilizing a trading model developed for this purpose, and to write a paper that anyone with …

Stationary Nonimaging Concentrators – A Comprehensive Study And Design Improvements, Srikanth Madala

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Most places on our planet receive an annual average radiation between 800-1000 W/m2. In the man-made world, this radiation is largely incident on stationary structures such as buildings, roads, monuments, bridges etc. Moreover, in the natural world also, there are large tracts of barren land which can be put to good use given their solar energy potential. The vision of the current research is to concentrate all this available solar energy to a more readily usable form. Therefore, stationary nonimaging solar concentrator technologies are sought after. This dissertation work is an exhaustive research on the nonimaging concentrating mechanisms with stationary …

Simulation Of Online Bin Packing In Practice, Kalpana Rajagopal Dec 2016

Simulation Of Online Bin Packing In Practice, Kalpana Rajagopal

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The bin packing problem requires packing a set of objects into a finite number of bins of fixed capacity in a way that minimizes the number of bins used. We consider the online version of the problem where items arrive over tine and a decision has to be made as soon as an element is available. Online algorithms can be analyzed in terms of competitiveness, a measure of performance that compares the solution obtained online with the optimal offline solution for the same problem, where the lowest possible competitiveness is best. Online processing is difficult due to the fact that …

Acquiescent And Defensive Silence In An Indonesian Context, Corina D. Riantoputra, Widya Maharisa, Tytania Faridhal

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

Although employee silence is already well-known to cause harms to both employees and organizations, less is known about the individual and situational factors that can influence it. This study reveals the relationships among acquiescent silence, defensive silence, psychological contract breaches, job-based psychological ownership, voice efficacy, psychological safety and task cohesion. Employing scales with good reliability scores (α between 0.8 to 0.95), we conducted a survey on a sample of of 260 public employees of an Indonesia’s government institution. Analysis indicates that (1) individual factors (voice efficacy and psychological contract breach) and situational factors (task cohesion and psychological safety) work hand …

Theoretical Development Of Mathematical Model To Predict Vertical Wicking Behavior Of Flow Through Terry Towels., Hemdan Abou-Taleb, Heba El-Fowaty

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Theoretical models have been proposed in this paper to predict the vertical wicking behaviour of fabrics based on different fibre, yarn and fabric parameters. The yarn and fabric models have been developed based on Hagen – Poiseuille’s equation on fluid flow and pore geometry through the yarns (inter–fibre pores) and fabrics (inter–yarn pores) have been determined. Factors such as yarn porosity, number of fibres in a yarn cross-section, fibre denier, yarn denier, yarn crimp, hydraulic pore diameter and fibre contact angle have been taken into account for development of the yarn model. Also, factors such as yarns diameters, ends & …

Contextual Healing: What To Do About Scandalous Trademarks And Lanham Act 2(A), Megan M. Carpenter

UC Law Journal

Offensive trademarks have come to the forefront of trademark policy and practice in recent years. While it was once true that more attention had been paid to Lanham Act section 2(a) in the pages of law reviews than in the courts, recent cases have focused attention on the ban on registration of offensive marks and the widespread impact of this ban on trademark owners, including a case before the Supreme Court this term. In this Article, I answer the fundamental question: Given the problems previous research has identified, what should be done about the 2(a) bar for scandalous marks? This …

I Matter, As Does The World: Critical Consciousness In Higher Education, Myra Dutko Dec 2016

I Matter, As Does The World: Critical Consciousness In Higher Education, Myra Dutko

Dissertations

This dissertation describes how graduate students in a community organizing class move along the critical consciousness pathway. Critical consciousness in the academic arena is critical to the development of democratic participation and agency in students. Critical consciousness is the ability to see, judge and act on issues of injustice in order to create social change. In addition, this research examines what barriers arise in that process. Research participants from an urban, private university in the Midwest narrate the creation of a learning environment and the process of moving towards critical consciousness awakening through journaling and focus group discussions. The data, …

The researcher used four middle school science teachers and nine high school science teachers, all from inner city schools in a big city of the Midwest United States except for one middle school teacher from a nearby suburb. The participants answered a survey questionnaire followed with a face-to-face recorded interview. The findings of the study confirmed that students showed little interest in science due …

School Libraries, Disabilities, And A Phenomenological Progression To Policy Change, Patrice Narret Foerster Dec 2016

School Libraries, Disabilities, And A Phenomenological Progression To Policy Change, Patrice Narret Foerster

Dissertations

Research has shown that school librarians are not well equipped to work with students who have disabilities. Applying a conceptual framework culled from the public policy process literature, this phenomenological study used interviews with Washington, DC, policy workers--some of whom advocate for students with disabilities--to explore the possible connection between library experiences and the placement of libraries within the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The findings indicate that these workers are not framing libraries in the same way that library professionals do and are not viewing school libraries as a direct source of student instruction. This dichotomy suggests that …

Enhancement Of Volumetric Specific Impulse In Htpb/Ammonium Nitrate Mixed Hybrid Rocket Systems, Jacob Ward Forsyth Dec 2016

Enhancement Of Volumetric Specific Impulse In Htpb/Ammonium Nitrate Mixed Hybrid Rocket Systems, Jacob Ward Forsyth

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Hybrid rocket systems are safer and have higher specific impulse than solid rockets. However, due to large oxidizer tanks and low regression rates, hybrid rockets have low volumetric efficiency and very long longitudinal profiles, which limit many of the applications for which hybrids can be used. This research investigates a method for increasing the volumetric efficiency and improving the form factor of hybrid rocket systems by a non-combustible load of solid oxidizer to the hybrid fuel grain. Including such oxidizers increases the regression rate of the fuel and lowers the amount of fluid oxidizer needed for optimal combustion. This type …

Soteria: A Persuasive Esecurity Assistant, Punica Bhardwaj

Theses and Dissertations

“…security is only as good as the weakest link, and people are the weakest link in the chain.” – B Schneier, 2002 Humans are often referred to as the “weakest link” in the security chain because of the poor security decisions taken by them. There can be many reasons for these decisions, such as lack of understandability of the software, lack of education, and lack of relevant information required to do that particular action. In this Thesis, we focus on the lack of relevant information required at the time of performing the action. In order to provide the user with …

Looking Backward, Looking Forward: The Long, Torturous Struggle With Mosquitoes, Gordon M. Patterson

Arts and Communication Faculty Publications

The American anti-mosquito movement grew out of the discovery of the role of mosquitoes in transferring pathogens and public concern about pest and nuisance mosquitoes in the late 1800s. In the 20th century, organized mosquito control in the United States passed through three eras: mechanical, chemical, and integrated mosquito control. Mosquito control in the 21st century faces the challenge of emerging pathogens, invasive mosquito species, and balancing concerns about the environment with effective control strategies.

Discrete And Continuous Operational Calculus In Stochastic Games, Kenneth Ibe Iwezulu Dec 2016

Discrete And Continuous Operational Calculus In Stochastic Games, Kenneth Ibe Iwezulu

Theses and Dissertations

First, we consider a class of antagonistic stochastic games between two players A and B. The game is specified in terms of two "hostile" stochastic processes representing mutual attacks upon random times exerting casualties of random magnitudes. This game is observed upon random epochs of time and the outcome of the game is not known in real time. The game ends at the time when the underlying fixed threshold of either player is crossed (referred to as the first passage time). The first passage time is then shifted to an epoch, i.e. upon one of the observation instants of time. …
