Mentoring Women In Stem: A Collegiate Investigation Of Mentors And Proteges, Nicole Jeanne Leavey Dec 2016

Mentoring Women In Stem: A Collegiate Investigation Of Mentors And Proteges, Nicole Jeanne Leavey

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in the United States lags behind that of other industrialized nations. Despite national efforts to enhance the quality of STEM education for students, progress remains elusive. Underperformance is evident in measures of outcomes, participation, and retention. In particular, inequity persists in the attraction and retention of women to STEM fields. Mentoring is heavily cited as a means to improve our national efforts to fortify STEM education. This research explores mentoring styles, gender preferences, and differential impact on outcomes. The results challenge conventional wisdom that women prefer and benefit from a style of mentoring …

An Ideal Woman: Feminism And Performance, Kristin Nicole Leadbetter Dec 2016

An Ideal Woman: Feminism And Performance, Kristin Nicole Leadbetter

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

An exploration of theatrical history, theory, and technique is a “triumvirate†that can “determine the value of any performance practice for an enlightened theatre†(Gainor 173). My thesis addresses the question of what it means to be a feminist performer, and overall theatre practitioner. Feminist critiques have often attempted to understand a technique best suited for women to practice theatre that is reflective of feminist ideals. My thesis begins by exploring specific examples of female representation in theatre and in society. It covers the patriarchal structure of society, the opinions held about women and their position, and their categorization into …

Functional Consequences Of A Putative Mek1 Phosphorylation Site On Rad17 During Meiosis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Madeeha Rahat Dec 2016

Functional Consequences Of A Putative Mek1 Phosphorylation Site On Rad17 During Meiosis In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Madeeha Rahat

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Meiosis is a specialized type of cell division, which produces haploid daughter cells from diploid parental cells. Meiotic recombination is initiated by the introduction of programmed DNA double strand breaks (DSBs), which are catalyzed by an evolutionarily conserved, meiosis-specific endonuclease, Spo11. Meiotic cells monitor the repair of Spo11-induced DSBs via the meiotic recombination checkpoint (MRC), which is activated in response to DSBs made during meiotic prophase. The MRC ensures proper repair of DSBs prior to entry into the first meiotic division. The Mec1 checkpoint kinase is recruited to resected DSBs via the 9-1-1 complex containing Rad17, Mec3 and Ddc1. Mec1 …

Topics In Yeast Sporulation, Patrick Singer Dec 2016

Topics In Yeast Sporulation, Patrick Singer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Yeast sporulation is the process by which yeast cells under limiting nutrient conditions are able to alter their nuclear division cycle from mitotic division to meiotic division, resulting in development of up to 4 spores per diploid cell. Spores are a hardy cell type that can survive until nutrient conditions improve. Under particularly severe conditions, sporulating cells only produce 2 spores, in an arrangement known as a non-sister dyad (NSD). NSDs contain the two spores with the youngest spindle pole bodies (SPBs), which are produced in meiosis II. The SPBs are the central nucleating point of prospore membranes. A scaffolding …

Biocompatibility And Bioactivity Of One- And Two-Dimensional Nanoparticle Reinforced Polymeric Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering Applications, Jason Thomas Rashkow Dec 2016

Biocompatibility And Bioactivity Of One- And Two-Dimensional Nanoparticle Reinforced Polymeric Scaffolds For Bone Tissue Engineering Applications, Jason Thomas Rashkow

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Limitations associated with current bone grafting techniques utilizing autologous or allogeneic bone have led to an increase in bone tissue engineering strategies. The ideal scheme of repairing a bone defect is to employ a material that can act as a scaffold and assist regeneration of native tissue in the area. Although biodegradable polymers fulfill many of the requirements for synthetic bone grafts, a major limitation is poor integrity under load bearing conditions prompting investigation of nanoparticle-reinforced biodegradable polymer nanocomposites. Recently, incorporation of 0.2 wt% of two-dimensional organic nanostructures (graphene nanoribbons (GONRs) and graphene nanoplatelets (GONPs)) and one- and two-dimensional inorganic …

Designing Functional Nanocomposites Towards Energy Applications: Examining The Performance Of Hierarchical Nanostructures As A Function Of Composition, Morphology, And Structure For Fuel Cell And Photovoltaic Device Applications, Haiqing Liu Dec 2016

Designing Functional Nanocomposites Towards Energy Applications: Examining The Performance Of Hierarchical Nanostructures As A Function Of Composition, Morphology, And Structure For Fuel Cell And Photovoltaic Device Applications, Haiqing Liu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The inherently finite quantity of fossil fuels has triggered the search for alternative renewable energy sources. Therefore, in this thesis, we have synthesized various types of high quality nanomaterials, including metal alloys, noble-metal-based core-shell structures, and lanthanum-doped fluorides with welldefined shapes as well as controlled chemical compositions, to demonstrate both morphology-dependent and composition-dependent relationships between nanostructures and their resulting electrochemical and/or photo-physical properties, with potential applications for fuel cell and solar cell configurations. In terms of exploring plausible electrocatalysts to replace expensive and scarce platinum (Pt), a series of one-dimensional (1D) ultrathin (d ~ 2 nm) Pd1-xNix and Pd1-xCux nanowires …

Synthesizing Nanomaterials For Energy Applications: Probing Activity As A Function Of Composition, Morphology And Purity To Address Key Issues Associated With Fuel Cells And Li-Ion Batteries, Megan E. Scofield

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the growing need to find alternative clean energy sources to fossil fuels, research into developing efficient fuel cells and batteries stands at the forefront of this grand effort. However, before mass commercialization, fundamental key issues need to be addressed. For example, fuel cells are subject to high catalyst costs and poor durability of the underlying carbon support. As a way to alleviate these issues, we have synthesized ultrathin one-dimensional (1D) alloy nanowires to probe the effect of composition, purity, and one-dimensionality upon the observed overall activity, performance, and durability. In terms of chemical composition, crystalline ultrathin PtM alloy nanowires …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube-Metal Chalcogenide/Oxide Heterostructures For Energy-Related Applications, Lei Wang Dec 2016

Synthesis And Characterization Of Carbon Nanotube-Metal Chalcogenide/Oxide Heterostructures For Energy-Related Applications, Lei Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the increasing strain on existing fossil fuel resources and the serious concerns associated with the environmental impacts on CO2 release through the burning of fossil fuels, clean energy innovation is needed to “get us on the right path†to energy sustainability. Achieving this objective will necessitate a rational design, development, and deployment of schemes to create novel sources of ‘carbon-free’ power using materials with specific and desired functions or properties. In this dissertation, we have attempted to develop two different categories of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanoscale heterostructures, namely (a) CNT- CdSe quantum dot (QD) heterostructures and (b) CNT-Li4Ti5O12 (LTO) …

Excavation, Heather Marie Cruce Dec 2016

Excavation, Heather Marie Cruce

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

For the past three years, while an MFA student at Stony Brook University, I have pursued an intense study of sculptural work in the medium of ceramic. My goal was to create large-scale ceramic installations. Theses installations comprised of many ceramic pieces I meticulously sculpted and carved to reference the fragility, beauty and finite existence of the human body as it relates to earthly landscapes. My aim has been to imbue an exhibition space with a sense of reference and ambiguity, allowing the viewer of the large scaled installed work to experience the work independent of direction. I deliberately and …

Moving Mountains, Desert Sea, Victoria Hortensia Febrer Dec 2016

Moving Mountains, Desert Sea, Victoria Hortensia Febrer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

I consider the role of not just the act of painting and the act of remembering, but the sea, the desert, the wind, the salt, the earth, and the light in this process—the way that non-human elements exert their existence and connect us to history, time, and geography. I use the term “painting†broadly here, to consider any act of placing color onto a surface, which in my case includes the use of acrylic, red wine (vinography), and projected light. The primary manifestation of this investigation is a still ongoing series of over 400 paintings and vinographs of landmasses seen …

Live From Dripdropolis: Static, Remote Control & The Leftover Tv Dinners, Logan Edward Marks Dec 2016

Live From Dripdropolis: Static, Remote Control & The Leftover Tv Dinners, Logan Edward Marks

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The following details my work with found objects of the everyday, resulting mostly in the form of sculptural installation and also in two-dimensional imagery. A reutilization of unwanted materials gives new potential to seemingly worthless items. In an effort to positively contribute to our social and economic culture, I rebuild and compile these once-consumer goods into dioramic landscapes and architectural settings, as artworks. Through this reinterpretation and recycling of waste, a reflection on our behaviors and experiences is prompted from our own dealings and associations to items like tube televisions, broken records, concrete blocks, or wooden two-by-fours. Our role as …

No. 05: Mapping The Informal Food Economy In Cape Town, South Africa, Jane Battersby, Maya Marshak, Ncedo Mngqibisa Dec 2016

No. 05: Mapping The Informal Food Economy In Cape Town, South Africa, Jane Battersby, Maya Marshak, Ncedo Mngqibisa

Hungry Cities Partnership

The informal food retail sector is an important component of urban food systems and plays a vital role in ensuring access to food by the urban poor. Yet, policy frameworks both to address food security and to govern the informal sector neglect informal retail in the food system and, as a result, the sector is poorly understood. This discussion paper argues that it is essential to understand the dynamics of the informal food retail sector, which is diverse in terms of products traded as well as the business models utilized. The paper attempts to identify the characteristics of the sector …

Understanding How Algorithms Work Persuasively Through The Procedural Enthymeme, Kevin Brock, Dawn Shepherd Dec 2016

Understanding How Algorithms Work Persuasively Through The Procedural Enthymeme, Kevin Brock, Dawn Shepherd

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Procedure, when discussed in regards to rhetoric, and to “digital rhetoric” in particular, is framed overwhelmingly in regards to game play (and to video games most frequently). We argue that this view needs to be expanded if scholars of rhetoric are to realize how complex human-computer rhetor systems function in diverse contexts. Such systems do so through procedural enthymemes, which persuade audience agents to action through the apparent logic of a given system. Procedural persuasion occurs most often via strategies that facilitate the agent to assume an active role in “self-persuasion” in order to complete a given enthymeme. In …

The We In Me: Exploring The Interconnection Of Indigenous Dance, Identity And Spirituality, Sara Moncada Dec 2016

The We In Me: Exploring The Interconnection Of Indigenous Dance, Identity And Spirituality, Sara Moncada

Senior Theses

An extensive amount of scholarship exists today on Native American and Indigenous people within the realm of music and dance ethnography. Over the centuries research and observations have used these stunning and profound creative expressions as a means by which to document and theorize about the people, their histories, traditions, and ways of being. However, a tremendous amount of this scholarship is developed from specific forms and styles of expression, resulting in a kind of separation that arises from examining an individual dance or song tradition as a stand-alone inquiry. By dislocating individual forms from the overarching whole, we limit …

Identity Entrepreneurs, Nancy Leong Dec 2016

Identity Entrepreneurs, Nancy Leong

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

In my previous article, Racial Capitalism, I examined the ways in which white individuals and predominantly white institutions derive value from non-white racial identity. This process of deriving value from identity results from intense social and legal preoccupation with diversity. And it results in the commodification of nonwhite racial identity, with negative implications for both individuals and society.

This Article builds on Racial Capitalism in three ways. First, as a foundation, it expands the concept of racial capitalism to identity categories more generally, explaining that individual in-group members and predominantly in-group institutions—usually individuals or institutions that are white, male, straight, …

Alfred Alexandre’s novels Bord de canal (2004) and Les villes assassines (2011) are set in the poorest urban slums of Fort-de-France. In both novels, the marginal characters exemplify the paradoxes of a Martinican society shifwrecked under the flow of rampant globalization. Alexandre’s portrayal of a decadent urban humanity stands far from the Creole community codes as imagined by the novelists who have preceded him, and signifies his intention to break away from their recurring themes. My purpose, here, is to assess what is truly innovative in this newly labelled “post-Creole” writing. It seems that investing those markedly social and scriptural …

This article offers a discussion of “development” rhetoric as expressed in and around television drama in Kinshasa, capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Producers (artists and pastors of Awakening Churches; some individuals are both) contend that their work will transform society, will combat the social and political crisis and will contribute to the development of the nation. Pentecostal christians embrace the melodrama because these television serials emphasize the spiritual development of the individual. I argue that the fictive representation of witchcraft relates to the Pentecostal diagnosis of the crises, and that the narrative emplotment of the TV serials …

Fabulations Ou Imaginaires Vacillants : L’Écriture De Rakotoson Et Raharimanana Entre Histoire, Mémoire Et Urgence Du Social, Ute Fendler Dec 2016

Fabulations Ou Imaginaires Vacillants : L’Écriture De Rakotoson Et Raharimanana Entre Histoire, Mémoire Et Urgence Du Social, Ute Fendler

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The two writers from Madagascar, Michèle Rakotoson and Jean-Luc Raharimanana, fill empty memorial spaces by writing texts that vary from autobiographical mode, via the historical one, up to some elements of oral tradition with the objective to create anticipatory texts. The article analyzes the entanglement of references to reality and to fiction drawing on the notion of “fabulation” by Deleuze and of “half-knowledge” by Flahaut.
