Research Performance Support: Connecting Online Graduate Students From The Lms To The Library, Kim G. Read, Maureen Joyous Morasch
CUP Faculty Research
Universities expand their online graduate programs daily, which challenges academic librarians to maintain research support and information literacy instruction for the growing number of online students. Performance support offers a scalable solution to the problems of limited time and staffing that academic librarians face. When embedded in the learning management system throughout a course or program, performance support provides point of need research help and scaffolds students’ information literacy development. Librarians are able to focus their limited time helping students with their more advanced research needs.

Hydrates are technologically important and ubiquitous yet they remain a poorly understood and understudied class of molecular crystals. In this work, we attempt to rationalize propensity towards hydrate formation through crystallization studies of molecules that lack strong hydrogen-bond donor groups. A Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) survey indicates that the statistical occurrence of hydrates in 124 molecules that contain five- and six-membered N-heterocyclic aromatic moieties is 18.5%. However, hydrate screening experiments on a library of 11 N-heterocyclic aromatic compounds with at least two acceptor moieties and no competing hydrogen-bond donors or acceptors reveals that over 70% of this group …

Tidal Decay And Stable Roche-Lobe Overflow Of Short-Period Gaseous Exoplanets, Brian Jackson, Emily Jensen, Sarah Peacock, Phil Arras, Kaloyan Penev
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Many gaseous exoplanets in short-period orbits are on the verge or are in the process of Roche-lobe overflow (RLO). Moreover, orbital stability analysis shows tides can drive many hot Jupiters to spiral inevitably toward their host stars. Thus, the coupled processes of orbital evolution and RLO likely shape the observed distribution of close-in exoplanets and may even be responsible for producing some of the short-period rocky planets. However, the exact outcome for an overflowing planet depends on its internal response to mass loss, and the accompanying orbital evolution can act to enhance or inhibit RLO. In this study, we apply …

A Case Study Of Upper Limb Joint Torques In An Elite Male Tenpin Bowler, R. Razman, J.P.G. Cheong
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
In general, tenpin bowling is not considered to be a highly physical sport and is regarded to present minimal injury risks. The arm swing which is an integral part of delivery was assumed to be gravity driven. This study aimed to investigate whether the bowling arm generated torque, and if so, what is the magnitude at each related joint. A high ranked national male bowler volunteered to participate in the study. To calcu-late torque values at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joint of the bowling arm, kinematic data was derived from 3D motion capture and was combined with measured anthropometric …

Hydrogeochemical Evaluation Of The Uinta Formation And Green River Formation, Piceance Creek Basin, Northwestern Colorado, Usa, Megan E. Masterson
Dissertations and Theses
The Piceance Creek Basin in northwestern Colorado contains extensive oil shale deposits that produce natural gas and which could potentially yield ~1.5 trillion barrels of shale oil. However, much of the oil shale lies at depths too great for traditional mining practices and various innovative approaches for in situ conversion of kerogen to oil have been proposed. A firm understanding of the existing hydrogeochemistry is needed as resulting mineralogical changes or rock-fluid reactions may affect rock porosity and permeability. Using an existing database complied by the USGS, the water chemistry of 267 surface and groundwater samples in the Piceance Creek …

Galaxies and their dark matter haloes are part of a complex network of mass structures, collectively called the cosmic web. Using the tidal tensor prescription these structures can be classified into four cosmic environments: voids, sheets, filaments and knots. As the cosmic web may influence the formation and evolution of dark matter haloes and the galaxies they host, we aim to study the effect of these cosmic environments on the average mass of galactic haloes. To this end we measure the galaxy–galaxy lensing profile of 91 195 galaxies, within 0.039 < z < 0.263, from the spectroscopic Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, using ∼100deg2" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: normal; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; display: inline-table; word-spacing: normal; word-wrap: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; position: relative;">∼100deg2∼100deg2

Magnetization Reversal In Ferromagnetic Spirals Via Domain Wall Motion, Ryan D. Schumm, Andrew Kunz
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
Domain wall dynamics have been investigated in a variety of ferromagnetic nanostructures for potential applications in logic, sensing, and recording. We present a combination of analytic and simulated results describing the reliable field driven motion of a domain wall through the arms of a ferromagnetic spiral nanowire. The spiral geometry is capable of taking advantage of the benefits of both straight and circular wires. Measurements of the in-plane components of the spirals' magnetization can be used to determine the angular location of the domain wall, impacting the magnetoresistive applications dependent on the domain wall location. The spirals' magnetization components are …

Gear Tooth Mesh Stiffness: A Comparison Of Calculation Approaches, Christopher G. Cooley, Chunguang Liu, Xiang Dai, Robert G. Parker
Articles
This work compares spur gear tooth mesh stiffness calculations using two approaches. The first is a common approach from the literature that calculates the mesh stiffness by dividing the mesh force by the mesh deflection, which we call the average slope method. The second approach calculates the local slope of the force-deflection curve about a nominal deflection. The two approaches result in meaningfully different mesh stiffness predictions that persist for wide ranges of applied torque and for gear teeth with tooth surface modifications. It is shown that each calculation approach has its own distinct use, broadly divided as average slope …

E-Government Services Adoption And Interdependence: Granger Causality Analysis, Shashi Kant Srivastava, Sanjog Ray
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Adoption of e-government services varies across the different categories of services: government to citizen services, utility services, commercial services, informational services, social benefit services and mobile based services. Faced with constraint of resources, policy makers devising strategies for better adoption of these services face the challenge of prioritizing among these categories of services. This paper attempts to address this challenge by showing the applicability of Granger causality analysis in studying the causation analysis between the categories of e-government services. We prove the applicability of Granger causality analysis in understanding the independence between e-government service categories by analyzing real transactions data …
Who Wins In An Energy Boom? Evidence From Wage Rates And Housing, Grant D. Jacobsen
Who Wins In An Energy Boom? Evidence From Wage Rates And Housing, Grant D. Jacobsen
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper presents evidence on the distributional effects of energy extraction by examining the recent U.S. energy boom. The boom increased local wage rates in almost every major occupational category. The increase occurred regardless of whether the occupation experienced a corresponding change in employment, suggesting a more competitive labor market that benefited local workers. Local housing values and rental prices both increased, thereby benefiting landowners. For renters, the increase in prices was completely offset by a contemporaneous increase in income. The results indicate that bans on drilling have negative monetary consequences for a large share of local residents.

The provision of safely managed sanitation in informal settlements is a challenge, especially in schools that require durable, clean, sex-segregated facilities for a large number of children. In informal settlements in Nairobi, school sanitation facilities demand considerable capital costs, yet are prone to breakage and often unhygienic. The private sector may be able to provide quality facilities and services to schools at lower costs as an alternative to the sanitation that is traditionally provided by the government. We conducted a randomized trial comparing private sector service delivery (PSSD) of urine-diverting dry latrines with routine waste collection and maintenance and government …

Automatic Pain Assessment From Infants’ Crying Sounds, Chih-Yun Pai
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Crying is infants utilize to express their emotional state. It provides the parents and the nurses a criterion to understand infants’ physiology state. Many researchers have analyzed infants’ crying sounds to diagnose specific diseases or define the reasons for crying. This thesis presents an automatic crying level assessment system to classify infants’ crying sounds that have been recorded under realistic conditions in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as whimpering or vigorous crying. To analyze the crying signal, Welch’s method and Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) are used to extract spectral features; the average and the standard deviation of the frequency …

Three Essays On The Theory Of Money And Financial Institutions Essay 2: The Exchange Economy, Money, And Markets, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This essay is the second of three. The first is nontechnical and in part autobiographical describing the evolution of my approach to developing a micro economic theory of money and financial institutions. This essay is devoted to a mathematical sketch of a closed economic exchange system with general equilibrium GE and rational expectations RE viewed game theoretically. It squeezes the last drop out of statics and an illusory dynamics in the form of the RE extension of GE with no other externalities beyond money and markets. The third essay builds on process models adding uncertainty, innovation, an active government, nonsymmetric information …

Expertise in searching and evaluating scientific literature is a requisite skill of trained scientists and science students, yet information literacy instruction varies greatly among institutions and programs. To ensure that science students acquire information literacy skills, robust methods of assessment are needed. Here, we describe a novel tool for longitudinal, crossover assessment of literature-searching skills in science students and apply it to a cross-sectional assessment of literature-searching performance in 145 first-year and 43 senior biology majors. Subjects were given an open-ended prompt requiring them to find multiple sources of information addressing a particular scientific topic. A blinded scorer used a …

Squashed Entanglement And Approximate Private States, Mark M. Wilde

The squashed entanglement is a fundamental entanglement measure in quantum information theory, finding application as an upper bound on the distillable secret key or distillable entanglement of a quantum state or a quantum channel. This paper simplifies proofs that the squashed entanglement is an upper bound on distillable key for finite-dimensional quantum systems and solidifies such proofs for infinite-dimensional quantum systems. More specifically, this paper establishes that the logarithm of the dimension of the key system (call it log 2K) in an ε-approximate private state is bounded from above by the squashed entanglement of that state plus a term that …

Ecosystem models have difficulty predicting plant drought responses, partially from uncertainty in the stomatal response to water deficits in soil and atmosphere. We evaluate a ‘supply–demand’ theory for water-limited stomatal behavior that avoids the typical scaffold of empirical response functions. The premise is that canopy water demand is regulated in proportion to threat to supply posed by xylem cavitation and soil drying. The theory was implemented in a trait-based soil–plant–atmosphere model. The model predicted canopy transpiration (E), canopy diffusive conductance (G), and canopy xylem pressure (Pcanopy) from soil water potential (Psoil) and vapor pressure deficit (D). Modeled responses to D …

Multiple sectors play vital roles in a community’s development and maintenance of a sustainable local food system. This study explored the perceptions of twenty-two representatives from the civil society, public, and private sectors in Dayton, Ohio, about the development of the region’s local food system. The researchers employed grounded theory methodology for data collection and analysis. Core themes from the participants of each sector group emerged from the data and areas of convergence and divergence among groups were reported.

Rao-Lovric And The Triwizard Point Null Hypothesis Tournament, Shlomo Sawilowsky
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
The debate if the point null hypothesis is ever literally true cannot be resolved, because there are three competing statistical systems claiming ownership of the construct. The local resolution depends on personal acclimatization to a Fisherian, Frequentist, or Bayesian orientation (or an unexpected fourth champion if decision theory is allowed to compete). Implications of Rao and Lovric’s proposed Hodges-Lehman paradigm are discussed in the Appendix.

Estimation Of Population Mean On Recent Occasion Under Non-Response In H-Occasion Successive Sampling, Anup Kumar Sharma, Garib Nath Singh
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
In this article, an attempt has been made to study on general estimation procedures of population mean on recent occasion when non-response occurs in h-occasion successive sampling. Suggested estimators have advantageously influenced the estimation procedures in the presence of non-response. Detailed properties of the suggested estimation procedures have been examined and compared with the estimation process of the same circumstances but in the absence of non-response. Empirical studies have been carried out to demonstrate the performances of the estimates and suitable recommendations have been made.
