ABSTRACT

Disrupting Poverty: The Impact of Academic Optimism and Organizational Citizenship Behaviors on Student Achievement in California High-Poverty Secondary Charter Schools

by Derek King

One of the byproducts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the commissioning of a study by the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare to better understand the disposition of the nation’s educational system. By 1966, the most comprehensive educational study to date was completed, the Equality of Educational Opportunity (Coleman et al., 1966). The findings shocked the nation by concluding that familial poverty restricted a student’s academic achievement, rendering all school-based interventions …

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin Dec 2016

Auditory Fatigue Model Applications To Predict Noise Induced Hearing Loss In Human And Chinchilla, Pengfei Sun, Daniel Fox, Kathleen Campbell, Jun Qin

Articles

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains a severe health problem worldwide. Current noise metrics and models have assessment limitations on gradually developing NIHL (GDNIHL). In this study, we apply a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model to quantitatively assess the impact of basilar membrane (BM) movement on GDNIHL. The transfer functions of chinchilla and human auditory systems, including the triple-path nonlinear (TRNL) filters to simulate the inner ear responses, are applied to obtain BM velocity distribution. Chinchilla and human experimental hearing loss data are used to validate the proposed CVL model’s effectiveness. The results reveal that the developed CVL …

Equivalent Representations Of Non-Exponential Discounting Models, James A. Feigenbaum Dec 2016

Equivalent Representations Of Non-Exponential Discounting Models, James A. Feigenbaum

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

I characterize the entire class of consumption rules for finite-horizon models in which consumption is proportional to lifetime wealth. Any such rule can be obtained from a preference model with CRRA period utility. In a steady state with constant interest rates, a proportional consumption rule can be derived from a model with time-consistent preferences or from a model with possibly time-inconsistent preferences in which a household continually reoptimizes future utility discounted relative to the present instant. These two preference models will only coincide for the special case when the discount function is exponential. More generally, there will be two distinct …

Federal Involvement In Education Policy: An Analysis Of Race To The Top, Angela L. Early Dec 2016

Federal Involvement In Education Policy: An Analysis Of Race To The Top, Angela L. Early

Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to trace federal involvement in public K-12 education policy and to determine its effectiveness. Specifically, I present a historical analysis of federal education policy leading to the passage of Race to the Top (RTTT) in 2009. My goal is to show that, although the federal government has grown more involved in education policy, especially from the late 1980s (following the 1983 publication of A Nation At Risk that showed the failings of the nation’s schools) until present, actually students in the K-12 public education system have not progressed as the federal government had hoped. …

Diffuse ionized gas (DIG) is prevalent in star-forming galaxies. Using a sample of 365 nearly face-on star-forming galaxies observed by Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO, we demonstrate how DIG in star-forming galaxies impacts the measurements of emission-line ratios, hence the interpretation of diagnostic diagrams and gas-phase metallicity measurements. At fixed metallicity, DIG-dominated low ΣHα regions display enhanced [S II]/Hα, [N II]/Hα, [O II]/Hβ and [O I]/Hα. The gradients in these line ratios are determined by metallicity gradients and ΣHα. In line ratio diagnostic diagrams, contamination by DIG moves H II …

Liver Enzymes And Risk Of Ischemic Heart Disease And Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Mendelian Randomization Study, Junxi Liu, Shiu Lun Au Yeung, Gabriel M. Leung, C. Mary Schooling

Publications and Research

We used Mendelian randomization to estimate the causal effects of the liver enzymes, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT), on diabetes and cardiovascular disease, using genetic variants predicting these liver enzymes at genome wide significance applied to extensively genotyped case-control studies of diabetes (DIAGRAM) and coronary artery disease (CAD)/myocardial infarction (MI) (CARDIoGRAMplusC4D 1000 Genomes). Genetically higher ALT was associated with higher risk of diabetes, odds ratio (OR) 2.99 per 100% change in concentration (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.62 to 5.52) but ALP OR 0.92 (95% CI 0.71 to 1.19) and GGT OR 0.88 (95% CI 0.75 …

Elementary Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Flipped Mathematics Lessons, Susan Grace Edwards Mosher Dec 2016

Elementary Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Flipped Mathematics Lessons, Susan Grace Edwards Mosher

All Theses And Dissertations

Flipped learning is a pedagogical model that allows more time for students to engage in active learning in the classroom because direct instruction is moved to video and watched outside of class time. Although many studies have shown the effectiveness of this strategy, previous perceptional studies have primarily focused on flipped learning through the lens of high school students and adult learners. This study was designed to explore elementary students’ and teachers’ perceptions of flipped learning in mathematics. A descriptive qualitative case study was conducted in a suburban elementary school in North Carolina. Three fifth grade teachers and fifteen of …

Cryptanalysis Of Homophonic Substitution Cipher Using Hidden Markov Models, Guannan Zhong Dec 2016

Cryptanalysis Of Homophonic Substitution Cipher Using Hidden Markov Models, Guannan Zhong

Master's Projects

We investigate the effectiveness of a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with random restarts as a mean of breaking a homophonic substitution cipher. Based on extensive experiments, we find that such an HMM-based attack outperforms a previously de- veloped nested hill climb approach, particularly when the ciphertext message is short. We then consider a combination cipher, consisting of a homophonic substitution and a column transposition. We develop and analyze an attack on such a cipher. This attack employs an HMM (with random restarts), together with a hill climb to recover the column permutation. We show that this attack can succeed on …

Continued Study On Finite Element Models Of Flagella, Gary Hu, Philip V. Bayly Dec 2016

Continued Study On Finite Element Models Of Flagella, Gary Hu, Philip V. Bayly

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

In previous study, we developed finite element models of flagella that show wavelike oscillation above certain load threshold. However, these baseline models were highly simplified and had inevitable limitations. In the current study, inter-doublet components have been meshed with finer setting to give more accurate results, multibody dynamics (translational joints) has introduced to allow more deflection, and inter-doublet materials have included viscoelasticity. Nondimensional waveform equations have been developed to find parameter values that allow larger deflection and frequencies close to actual cilia and flagella.

Statistical Properties Of Cloud Propagation Over Sumatra During Cpea-I, Aulya Rahayu, Marzuki, Mutya Vonnisa

Makara Journal of Science

Cloud propagation over Sumatra and the surrounding area (10°S-10°N, 70°-120°E) during the Coupling Processes in the Equatorial Atmosphere-I (CPEA-I) campaign (10 April to 9 May 2004) was tracked using brightness temperature (Tb) data from the GOES-9 satellite. The cloud tracking was based on three-dimensional data with a threshold of Tb < 210 K. During the campaign, westward-moving clouds were more dominant than eastward-moving systems, with a ratio of approximately 4:1. This characteristic coincided with the dominant easterly wind aloft. Most clouds propagated with a speed varying between 4 and 35 m/s, with a mean value of 13.7 m/s. If the westward and eastward propagations were separated, the average duration, speed, and span of the westward (eastward) moving clouds are 7.7 (5.8 h), -14.5 (9.8 m/s), and 435.5 (187.1 km), respectively. The characteristics of cloud propagation during the CPEA-I were influenced by environmental factors such as relative humidity, temperature, the vertical movement of air, and wind shear. Such factors interacted with the inactive and active phases of the Madden-Julian Oscillation.

Discontinuous Finite Element Mechanistic Water Quality Model For The Simulation Of Adsorptive Pollutants Transport In River Systems., F. P. Fiengo, L. Sweeck, M. Elskens, W. Bauwens

Open Water Journal

The close interaction between humans, animals and the river system requires to have control about the concentration of different pollutants in the water column in order to avoid damage to the environment. Due to the fact that the measurements are time consuming, expensive and in most of the cases very local, it is required to develop tools in order to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of the pollutants in the system.

Once pollutant effluents are discharged in waters, part of them is transported in liquid phase and the rest is attached to the suspended sediments and to the bed …

The selection and identification of a suitable hydrological model structure is more than fitting parameters of a model structure to reproduce a measured hydrograph. The procedure is highly dependent on various criteria, i.e. the modelling objective, the characteristics and the scale of the system under investigation as well as the available data. Rigorous analysis of the candidate model structures is needed to support and objectify the selection of the most appropriate structure for a specific case (or eventually justify the use of a proposed ensemble of structures). This holds both in the situation of choosing between a limited set of …
