Monitoring an individual’s daily dietary intake can provide various insights regarding the health of the individual. Applications such as My Fitness Pal exists, which allows individuals to monitor all items that the individual consumed. However, manual monitoring can be labour intensive. To overcome this limitation, wrist worn sensor based eating habit monitoring has been studied by various researchers. These systems can detect eating gesture, but they cannot determine what is being eaten. We have built a system which can (i) detect eating gesture using the smartwatch's inertial sensors (ii) use the smartwatch's camera to capture images of food consumed at …

Background

The objective of this study was to determine whether irradiation could serve as a suitable phytosanitary treatment alternative to methyl bromide (MB) fumigation for blueberries and sweet cherry and also to determine the effect of phytosanitary irradiation treatment on survival of Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes on these fruit. ‘Bluecrop’ blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum) and ‘Sweetheart’ cherries (Prunus avium) were irradiated at 0.4 kGy or fumigated with methyl bromide and evaluated for quality attributes during storage.

Results

Irradiation caused an immediate decrease in firmness of both fruit without further significant change during storage. Fumigated fruit, in …

The Nature Of Kinematic Waves In Glaciers And Their Application To Understanding The Nisqually Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington, Brita Ilyse Horlings Jan 2016

The Nature Of Kinematic Waves In Glaciers And Their Application To Understanding The Nisqually Glacier, Mt. Rainier, Washington, Brita Ilyse Horlings

University Honors Theses

The Nisqually Glacier is one of the best studied glaciers on Mt. Rainier. Data was first collected on the glacier in 1857 and since then a number of kinematic waves have been observed but not extensively studied. The purpose of the thesis is to numerically model the conditions that favor or restrict kinematic wave propagation/initiation and subsequently model the relationship between kinematic wave behavior and the Nisqually Glacier. The numerical models used in this study are 2-D and use bedrock elevation, mass balance, basal sliding, and other equations to simulate alpine glaciers. A perturbation is added instantaneously for a specified …

Beyond Just Sea-Level Rise: Considering Macroclimatic Drivers Within Coastal Wetland Vulnerability Assessments To Climate Change, Michael J. Osland, Nicholas M. Enwright, Richard H. Day, Christopher A. Gabler, Camille L. Stagg, James B. Grace Jan 2016

Beyond Just Sea-Level Rise: Considering Macroclimatic Drivers Within Coastal Wetland Vulnerability Assessments To Climate Change, Michael J. Osland, Nicholas M. Enwright, Richard H. Day, Christopher A. Gabler, Camille L. Stagg, James B. Grace

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Due to their position at the land-sea interface, coastal wetlands are vulnerable to many aspects of climate change. However, climate change vulnerability assessments for coastal wetlands generally focus solely on sea-level rise without considering the effects of other facets of climate change. Across the globe and in all ecosystems, macroclimatic drivers (e.g., temperature and rainfall regimes) greatly influence ecosystem structure and function. Macroclimatic drivers have been the focus of climate change-related threat evaluations for terrestrial ecosystems, but largely ignored for coastal wetlands. In some coastal wetlands, changing macroclimatic conditions are expected to result in foundation plant species replacement, which would …

Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger Jan 2016

Statistical Modeling To Investigate Anatomy And Function Of The Knee, Lowell Matthew Smoger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The natural knee is a hinge joint with significant functional requirements during activities of daily living; as a result, acute and chronic injuries can occur. Pathologies are influenced by joint anatomy and may include patellar maltracking, cartilage degeneration (e.g. osteoarthritis), or acute injuries such as meniscal or ligamentous tears. Population variability makes broadly applicable conclusions about etiology of these conditions from small-scale investigations challenging. The work presented in this dissertation is a demonstration of statistical modeling approaches to evaluate population variability in anatomy of the knee and function of its tibiofemoral (TF) and patellofemoral (PF) joints. Three-dimensional (3D) computational models …

Predicting Undergraduate Statistics Course Performance And Transfer Through Students' Implicit Theories And Achievement Goals, Rachel L. Ankney Jan 2016

Predicting Undergraduate Statistics Course Performance And Transfer Through Students' Implicit Theories And Achievement Goals, Rachel L. Ankney

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Students' implicit theories of intelligence (TOI), implicit theories of statistics ability (TOSA), and achievement goals were analyzed as individual differences predictors of both statistics course performance and statistics transfer. Students enrolled in an introductory undergraduate statistics course completed inventories for the three individual differences under investigation as well as measures of course performance and transfer. We hypothesized that TOSA would be a stronger predictor of achievement goals, course performance, and transfer, and would outperform TOI in competing path models. We also anticipated that achievement goals would predict both statistics outcomes. Results demonstrated that (1) TOSA is a stronger predictor of …

Interactive Learning: Developing An Esimulation Portal Framework, Ayman Tobail, John Crowe, Amr Arisha

Articles

The emerging eLearning paradigm is becoming increasingly used in many academic disciplines. The concept acknowledges learning processes that no longer deploy only traditional teaching methods. It can be argued that today’s third level education students are part of a new virtual era where the blackboard has been replaced by the interactive whiteboard, so more interactive and virtually orientated teaching aids are required to assist in the transition from traditional learning to eLearning. The key objective of this paper is to propose a simulation-based learning framework that integrates web-based simulation and a web content management hierarchy model. Using the highly complex …

Drilling fluid losses into fractured shales is a major challenge. Lost circulation treatments are widely applied to mitigate the losses; however, the effectiveness of these treatments is affected by different physical properties of the used lost circulation materials (LCM). This paper presents an experimental investigation to study the effect of LCM type, concentration, particle size distribution, temperature, and LCM shape on the formed seal integrity, with respect to differential pressure, at different fracture widths. The overall objective of this study is to address the effectiveness of LCM treatments in sealing fractured shales, with specific application to the over consolidated Barents …

Role Of Composition And Structure On The Properties Of Metal/Multifunctional Ceramic Interfaces, Fang Yin Lin, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Juan Claudio Nino, Jacob L. Jones, Richard G. Hennig, Susan Sinnott

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The formation of intermetallic secondary phases, such as Pt3Pb, has been observed experimentally at PbTiO3/Pt and Pb(Zr,Ti)O3/Pt, or PZT/Pt, interfaces. Density functional theory calculations are used here to calculate the work of adhesion of these interfacial systems with and without the secondary intermetallic phase. The charge density maps of the interfaces reveal the electronic interactions at the interface and the impact of the secondary phase. In addition, Bader charge analysis provides a quantitative assessment of electron transfer from the perovskites to the Pt. Analysis of the band diagrams indicates an increase of the potential …

The prospect that protons from water may be transferred to N-heterocyclic molecules due to the presence of an excess electron is studied in hydrated azobenzene cluster anions using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and computational chemistry. In the case of s-triazine (C3H3N3), which has a positive adiabatic electron affinity, proton transfer is not energetically favored nor observed experimentally. Heterocyclic rings with only 1 or 2 nitrogen atoms have negative electron affinities, but the addition of solvating water molecules can yield stable negative ions. In the case of the diazines (C4H4N2: …

Cell Capacitance Estimation And Detection, Stephen A. Sladen Jan 2016

Cell Capacitance Estimation And Detection, Stephen A. Sladen

Open Access Master's Theses

The aim of this thesis is to examine the behavior of the electrical properties such as the resistance and capacitance of the cell membrane. During specific biological processes, the electrical properties of the membrane can yield useful data which can be further exploited to study these phenomenons. Using simulations, an accurate model of the cell membrane was built based on a three-element analog electrical circuit. Presented in this thesis are several signal processing algorithms which are used to either estimate the parameter values of the model or detect the presence of a vesicle activity.

The estimation is achieved with least-squares …

Proportional Integral Observer (Pio) Design For Linear Control Systems, Xiaonan Dong Jan 2016

Proportional Integral Observer (Pio) Design For Linear Control Systems, Xiaonan Dong

Open Access Master's Theses

Proportional integral observer (PIO) has the ability to estimate state variables and disturbances in linear control systems. The observer gain can be obtained by traditional pole-placement methods, however, these methods may not provide good robustness bound for observer based regulators and tracking systems. In this thesis, an extended observer model will be derived, and shown that PIO can be regarded as this extended observer. A parameterized method of calculating feedback gain and proportional observer gain will be modified and applied on gain calculation of PIO using an extended model for observer, with good robustness for PIO based regulators and tracking …

A Multi-Component Evaporation Model To Determine The Onset Of Crude Oil Emulsification In Seawater, Jennifer Anne Cragan Jan 2016

A Multi-Component Evaporation Model To Determine The Onset Of Crude Oil Emulsification In Seawater, Jennifer Anne Cragan

Open Access Master's Theses

Once crude oil is spilled in an aquatic environment, its emulsification state becomes a key property in combating the spill. The onset of emulsification has been hypothesized to be due to decreases in the solvent strength of bulk crude oil. To better predict when emulsification will occur, a compound-specific evaporation model was developed for crude oil spilled on surface seawater. A simple crude oil composition was constructed from 300 of the most commonly found crude oil constituents. Time varying evaporation rates of these constituents were derived by implementing a filmbased exchange model that utilized evolving bulk crude oil properties and …

Risk Classification In High Dimensional Survival Models, Daven Amin Jan 2016

Risk Classification In High Dimensional Survival Models, Daven Amin

Open Access Master's Theses

Sparse regression models are an actively burgeoning area of statistical learning research. A subset of these models seek to separate out significant and non-trivial main effects from noise effects within the regression framework (yielding so-called “sparse” coefficient estimates, where many estimated effects are zero) by imposing penalty terms on a likelihood-based estimator. As this area of the field is relatively recent, many published techniques have not yet been investigated under a wide range of applications. Our goal is to fit several penalty-based estimators for the Cox semiparametric survival model in the context of genomic covariates on breast cancer survival data …

Applications Of Optimal Subspace Estimation, Christopher Grayson Jan 2016

Applications Of Optimal Subspace Estimation, Christopher Grayson

Open Access Master's Theses

Optimal Subspace Estimation (OSE) is a technique for estimating the signal subspace of a noisy data matrix or covariance matrix using a specific structure known as shift-invariance to generate an accurate estimate. For the applications in this thesis, the datasets are generated using a line array of sensors and multiple snapshots to produce data which should have the desired structure. The OSE algorithm exploits this structure in the data matrix in order to generate an estimate of the underlying noise-free signal subspace Two applications have been chosen where the covariance matrices of the signal data should exhibit this desired structure. …

The Corporate Security Stratum Of Work: Identifying Levels Of Work In The Domain, Codee Roy Ludbey Jan 2016

The Corporate Security Stratum Of Work: Identifying Levels Of Work In The Domain, Codee Roy Ludbey

Theses : Honours

Corporate security is a practicing domain and developing academic discipline that provides for the protection of people, information and assets, as well as the self-protection of organisations. Fayol (1949) articulated such an activity within organisations to be a core business function of significant importance; embedding security operations within all aspects of organisational work. This embedded nature of security within organisations has led to difficulty in the literature delineating roles and responsibilities of security practitioners; consequently leading to a nebulous understanding of security as a whole. Therefore, an investigation of the corporate security stratum of work has been undertaken to address …

Istar First Light: Characterizing Astronomy Education Research Dissertations In The Istar Database, Stephanie J. Slater, Coty B. Tatge, Paulo S. Bretones, Timothy F. Slater, Sharon P. Schleigh, David H. Mckinnon, Inge Heyer

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

There is widespread interest among discipline-based science education researchers to situate their research in the existing scholarly literature base. Unfortunately, traditional approaches to conducting a thorough literature review are unduly hindered in astronomy education research as the venues in which scholarship is reported are fragmented and widely dispersed across journals of varying disciplines. The international STudies of Astronomy education Research (iSTAR) online repository is the result of a concerted international community effort to collect and categorize existing research from peer-reviewed journal articles, dissertations/theses, and grey literature. In a “first light” survey of over 300 U.S. dissertations, we find: (i) work …

When We Grade Students’ Proofs, Do They Understand Our Feedback?, Robert C. Moore, Martha Byrne, Sarah Hanusch, Timothy Fukawa-Connelly

Faculty Publications

Instructors often write feedback on students’ proofs even if there is no expectation for the students to revise and resubmit the work. It is not known, however, what students do with that feedback or if they understand the professor’s intentions. To this end, we asked eight advanced mathematics undergraduates to respond to professor comments on four written proofs by interpreting and implementing the comments. We analyzed the student’s responses using the categories of corrective feedback for language acquisition, viewing the language of mathematical proof as a register of academic English.
