The Cultural Contours Of Democracy: Indigenous Epistemologies Informing South African Citizenship, Patricia K. Kubow, Mina Min
The Cultural Contours Of Democracy: Indigenous Epistemologies Informing South African Citizenship, Patricia K. Kubow, Mina Min
Democracy & Education
Drawing upon the African concept of ubuntu, this article examines the epistemic orientations toward individual-society relations that inform democratic citizenship and identity in South Africa. Findings from focus group interviews conducted with 50 Xhosa teachers from all seven primary and intermediate schools in a township outside Cape Town depict the cultural contours of democracy and how the teachers reaffirm and question the dominant Western-oriented democratic narrative. Through ubuntu, defined as the virtue of being human premised upon respect, the Xhosa teachers interrupt the prevailing rights-and-responsibilities discourse to interpose a conception of democracy based on rights, responsibilities, and respect. …

D-Optimally-Constructed Exact Designs Under The Variation Of Non-D-Optimality Criteria For Varying Regression Polynomials, Mary P. Iwundu, Polycarp E. Chigbu, Eugene C. Ukaegbu
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The behaviour of D-optimal exact designs, constructed using a combinatorial algorithm, is examined under the variations of A-, E- and G-optimality criteria. In particular, the question of whether designs that are optimal with respect to one criterion are also optimal with respect to other criteria is addressed. The Condition Numbers (CN) of the designs as well as the equivalence relations of the criteria are noted. The D-optimal designs under consideration are for low-order bivariate polynomial models. By the rules of the algorithm, not more than 25 percent search on the total available designs is required within a design class since …

Human Amplified Changes In Precipitation-Runoff Patterns In Large River Basins Of The Midwestern United States, Sara A. Kelly, Zeinab Takbiri, Patrick Belmont, Efi Foufoula-Georgiou
Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications
Complete transformations of land cover from prairie, wetlands, and hardwood forests to homogenous row crop agriculture scattered with urban centers are thought to have caused profound changes in hydrology in the Upper Midwestern US since the 1800s. Continued intensification of land use and drainage practices combined with increased precipitation have caused many Midwest watersheds to exhibit higher streamflows today than in the historical past. While changes in crop type and farming practices have been well documented over the past few decades, changes in artificial surface (ditch) and subsurface (tile) drainage systems have not. This makes it difficult to quantitatively disentangle …

Bayesian Estimation And Two-Sample Prediction Based On Unified Hybrid Censored Sample, M. M. Mohie El-Din, A. Sadek, M. Nagy
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, a general inverse exponential form of the underlying distribution and a general conjugate prior are used to discuss the maximum likelihood and Bayesian estimation based on unified hybrid censored sample. A general procedure for deriving two-sample Bayesian prediction is developed using unified hybrid censoring scheme. Special cases of the inverse Weibull model such as the inverse exponential and the inverse Rayleigh distributions are then used as illustrative examples. Finally, numerical examples are presented for illustrating all the inferential procedures developed here.
Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Multivariate Analysis Of Crime Data Using Spatial Outlier Detection Algorithm, Alok Kumar Singh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
A spatial outlier is a spatially referenced object whose non spatial attribute value is significantly different from the corresponding values in its spatial neighbourhood. In other words, a spatial outlier is a local instability, or an extreme observation which deviates significantly in its spatial neighbourhood, but may not be in the entire data set. In this paper, we have applied the well-known mean algorithm for detecting spatial outliers in the multiple attributes state wise crime data and predicted which states need more attention from the government so as to reduce crimes there. We have also done regression analysis between the …
Transmuted Two-Parameter Lindley Distribution, Moath Al-Khazaleh, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari, Ahmed M. H. Al-Khazaleh
Transmuted Two-Parameter Lindley Distribution, Moath Al-Khazaleh, Amer Ibrahim Al-Omari, Ahmed M. H. Al-Khazaleh
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, a transmuted two-parameter Lindley distribution (TTLD) is suggested as a modification of the well known two-parameter Lindley distribution (TLD). The necessary mathematical properties including the moments, the moment generating function, hazard rate function, reliability function, and the order statistics for the TTLD are derived. Also, the maximum likelihood estimators for the TTLD parameters and the Renyi entropy are derived. A real data set is used for illustration. It is found that the TTLD is more better than the TLD and Lindley distribution (LD) to fit this set of real data.

Inferences For New Weibull-Pareto Distribution Based On Progressively Type-Ii Censored Data, Mohamed A. W. Mahmoud, Rashad M. El-Sagheer, Samah H. M. Abdallah
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, the problem of estimation for the new Weibull-Pareto distribution based on progressive Type-II censored sample is studied. The maximum likelihood, Bayes and parametric bootstrap methods are used for estimating the three unknown parameters as well as some lifetime parameters reliability and hazard functions. Based on the asymptotic normality of maximum likelihood estimators we construct the approximate confidence intervals of the parameters. Futhermor, depending on the delta and parametric bootstrap methods we calculate the approximate confidence intervals (ACIs) of the reliability and hazard functions. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique is applied to computing the Bayes estimate and …

An Empirical Analysis Of Weak Form Market Efficiency: Evidence From Chittagong Stock Exchange (Cse) Of Bangladesh, Md. Siddikur Rahman, H. M. Simon, Md. Murad Hossain
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Stock market efficiency is an important concept, for understanding the working of the capital markets particularly in emerging stock market such as Bangladesh. There is enough evidence on market efficiency and day of the week effect in the developed markets, however, the same is not true for the emerging stock markets. This paper provides empirical evidence on weak form efficiency which has been carried out to diagnose the random walk behavior of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) by composing daily returns of three indices for the period of 2006 to 2015. Different non-parametric tests (Wald-Wolfowitz Runs Test, Variance Ratio Test and …

On Dynamic Cumulative Residual Entropy Of Order Statistics, Osman Kamari
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The entropy functions are useful tools to measure the uncertainty in a random variable. Dynamic Cumulative Residual Entropy (DCRE) introduced by Asadi and Zohrevand [1] as a useful dynamic measure of Cumulative Residual Entropy. They studied some properties and applications of these measures. In this paper, Dynamic Cumulative Residual Entropy is proposed based on order statistics and under conditions is showed a characterization result that Dynamic Cumulative Residual Entropy of order statistics can determine the distribution function uniquely. Then some properties for DCRE of order statistics is presented.

Reliability And Sensitivity Analysis Of The K-Out-Of-N:G Warm Standby Parallel Repairable System With Replacement At Common-Cause Failure Using Markov Mode, Medhat Ahmed El-Damcese, Naglaa Hassan El-Sodany
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Standby redundancy is a technique that has been widely applied for improving system reliability and availability in system design. In this paper, probabilistic model for a redundant system with replacement at each common-cause failure has been developed to analyze the reliability measures using Markov models. We investigate the reliability and sensitivity analysis of k-out-of-n:G warm standby parallel repairable system. All failure and repair times of the system are exponentially distributed and when one of the operating primary units fails then it is instantaneously replaced by a warm standby unit if one is available. Comparative analysis of reliability measures between two …

A New Improved Class Of Estimators For The Population Variance, Subhash Kumar Yadav, Sant Sharan Mishra, Shakti Kumar, Cem Kadilar
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper by utilizing the information on the population mean of auxiliary variable, we proposed a new improved class of estimators for the population variance of the study variable. The large sample properties of proposed estimator have been studied up to the first order of approximation that is the mathematical expressions for the bias and mean square error (MSE) of the proposed class of estimators have been obtained up to the first order of approximation. The optimum values of the characterizing scalars, which minimize the MSE of proposed estimator, have been obtained. For these optimum values of characterizing scalars, …

Mixture Of Exponentiated Generalized Weibull-Gompertz Distribution And Its Applications In Reliability, A. H. El-Bassiouny, Medhat El-Damcese, Abdelfattah Mustafa, M. S. Eliwa
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This paper introduces studies on mixture of two exponentiated generalized Weibull-Gompertz distribution (MEGWGD) by using mixing parameter p where 0 < p < 1, which generalizes a lot of distributions. Several properties of the MEGWGD such as reversed (hazard) function, moments, maximum likelihood estimation, mean residual (past) lifetime, MTTF, MTTR, MTBF, maintainability, availability and order statistics are studied in this paper. It is observed that the present distribution can provide a better fit than some other very well-known distributions.

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
In this paper, we consider Quota- \alpha,\beta) reinsurance model in discrete times with assumption that claims sequence X=\{X_n\}_{n>0}, premiums sequence Y=\{Y_n\}_{n> 0} are sequence of independent and identically distributed. Furthermore, the sequences X=\{X_n\}_{n>0}, Y=\{Y_n\}_{n>0} are assumed to be independent. By martingale method we show inequality for ruin probability of the insurance company, ruin probability of the reinsurance company and joint ruin probability. Finally some numerical illustrations are

Parameter Estimation Of The Marshall-Olkin Exponential Distribution Under Type-Ii Hybrid Censoring Schemes And Its Applications, Mukhtar M. Salah
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
Marshall-Olkin exponential distribution has been studied by Salah, et al. [11,12]. In this paper, we consider the analysis of the hybrid censored data when the life time distribution of the individuals item is a two-parameter Marshall-Olkin exponential distribution. We study the estimations of the shape (a) and scale (l ) parameters of Marshall-Olkin exponential distribution based on Type-II hybrid censoring scheme. Using the EM algorithm to compute the maximum likelihood estimators as it observed that these estimators can not be found explicitly. Finally, we obtain the observed Fisher information matrix that can be used for constructing the asymptomatic confidence intervals. …

An ‘Analytic Dynamical Magnetosphere’ Formalism For X-Ray And Optical Emission From Slowly Rotating Magnetic Massive Stars, S. P. Owocki, A. Ud-Doula, J. O. Sundqvist, V. Petit, David H. Cohen, R. H. D. Townsend
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Slowly rotating magnetic massive stars develop ‘dynamical magnetospheres’ (DMs), characterized by trapping of stellar wind outflow in closed magnetic loops, shock heating from collision of the upflow from opposite loop footpoints, and subsequent gravitational infall of radiatively cooled material. In 2D and 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, the interplay among these three components is spatially complex and temporally variable, making it difficult to derive observational signatures and discern their overall scaling trends. Within a simplified, steady-state analysis based on overall conservation principles, we present here an ‘analytic dynamical magnetosphere’ (ADM) model that provides explicit formulae for density, temperature, and flow speed …

Theory Of Spin Loss At Metallic Interfaces, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Alexey Kovalev, Mark Van Schilfgaarde
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications
Interfacial spin-flip scattering plays an important role in magnetoelectronic devices. Spin loss at metallic interfaces is usually quantified by matching the magnetoresistance data for multilayers to the Valet-Fert model, while treating each interface as a fictitious bulk layer whose thickness is δ times the spin-diffusion length. By employing the properly generalized circuit theory and the scattering matrix approaches, we derive the relation of the parameter δ to the spin-flip transmission and reflection probabilities at an individual interface. It is found that δ is proportional to the square root of the probability of spin-flip scattering. We calculate the spin-flip scattering probabilities …

Sparc: Mass Models For 175 Disk Galaxies With Spitzer Photometry And Accurate Rotation Curves, Federico Lelli, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
We introduce SPARC (Spitzer Photometry and Accurate Rotation Curves): a sample of 175 nearby galaxies with new surface photometry at 3.6 μm and high-quality rotation curves from previous H I/Hα studies. SPARC spans a broad range of morphologies (S0 to Irr), luminosities (∼5 dex), and surface brightnesses (∼4 dex). We derive [3.6] surface photometry and study structural relations of stellar and gas disks. We find that both the stellar mass-H I mass relation and the stellar radius-H i radius relation have significant intrinsic scatter, while the H I mass-radius relation is extremely tight. We build detailed mass models and quantify …

Estimating Propensity Parameters Using Google Pagerank And Genetic Algorithms, David Murrugarra, Jacob Miller, Alex N. Mueller

Stochastic Boolean networks, or more generally, stochastic discrete networks, are an important class of computational models for molecular interaction networks. The stochasticity stems from the updating schedule. Standard updating schedules include the synchronous update, where all the nodes are updated at the same time, and the asynchronous update where a random node is updated at each time step. The former produces a deterministic dynamics while the latter a stochastic dynamics. A more general stochastic setting considers propensity parameters for updating each node. Stochastic Discrete Dynamical Systems (SDDS) are a modeling framework that considers two propensity parameters for updating each node …

Cyber-physical systems (CPS), which integrate algorithmic control with physical processes, often consist of physically distributed components communicating over a network. A malfunctioning or compromised component in such a CPS can lead to costly consequences, especially in the context of public infrastructure. In this short paper, we argue for the importance of constructing invariants (or models) of the physical behaviour exhibited by CPS, motivated by their applications to the control, monitoring, and attestation of components. To achieve this despite the inherent complexity of CPS, we propose a new technique for learning invariants that combines machine learning with ideas from mutation testing. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Hybrid systems exhibit both continuous and discrete behavior. Analyzing hybrid systems is known to be hard. Inspired by the idea of concolic testing (of programs), we investigate whether we can combine random sampling and symbolic execution in order to effectively verify hybrid systems. We identify a sufficient condition under which such a combination is more effective than random sampling. Furthermore, we analyze different strategies of combining random sampling and symbolic execution and propose an algorithm which allows us to dynamically switch between them so as to reduce the overall cost. Our method has been implemented as a web-based checker named …

Constraint Cnf: Sat And Csp Language Under One Roof, Broes De Cat, Yuliya Lierler
Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
A new language, called constraint CNF, is proposed. It integrates propositional logic with constraints stemming from constraint programming. A family of algorithms is designed to solve problems expressed in constraint CNF. These algorithms build on techniques from both propositional satisfiability and constraint programming. The result is a uniform language and an algorithmic framework, which allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the relation between the solving techniques used in propositional satisfiability and in constraint programming and apply them together.
