the eye regions of laptop users. To achieve this, the iris and eye corners are detected by processing the images captured by the standard internal webcam of a laptop. In addition, an artificial neural network (ANN) is used for determining the eye region. Hereby, the iris and eye corners can be detected in the determined eye region. In the study, 107 user images are captured by using a laptop's internal camera under different light intensities, environments, viewpoints, and positions. These images are used for the training of the ANN. Two different methods are used for the iris detection. In the …

Novel Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration Implementations Of The Support Vector Machine Classifier On Fpga, Hanaa Hussain, Khaled Benkrid, Hüseyi̇n Şeker

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The support vector machine (SVM) is one of the highly powerful classifiers that have been shown to be capable of dealing with high-dimensional data. However, its complexity increases requirements of computational power. Recent technologies including the postgenome data of high-dimensional nature add further complexity to the construction of SVM classifiers. In order to overcome this problem, hardware implementations of the SVM classifier have been proposed to benefit from parallelism to accelerate the SVM. On the other hand, those implementations offer limited flexibility in terms of changing parameters and require the reconfiguration of the whole device. The latter interrupts the operation …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study multiple linear regression, multilayer perceptron (MLP) regression, and support vector regression (SVR) are used to make multivariate tourism forecasting for Turkey. This paper is a comparative study of data mining techniques based on multivariate regression modelling with monthly data points to forecast tourism demand; it focuses on Turkey. Both MLP and SVR methods are widely employed in the variety forecasting problems. Most of the previous research on tourism forecasting used univariate time series or a limited number of variables with mostly yearly or quarterly, and rarely monthly frequencies. However, the application of data mining techniques for multivariate …

Intensity Exposure-Based Bi-Histogram Equalization For Image Enhancement, Tang Jing Rui, Nor Ashidi Mat Isa Jan 2016

Intensity Exposure-Based Bi-Histogram Equalization For Image Enhancement, Tang Jing Rui, Nor Ashidi Mat Isa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we present a study of the usage of intensity exposure in histogram segmentation and its performance in histogram equalization. Two techniques are proposed: the mean-based bi-histogram equalization plateau limit (mean-BHEPL) or median-based BHEPL (median-BHEPL) and adaptive bi-histogram equalization algorithm (ABHE). Both techniques initially divide the input histogram into two subhistograms through a threshold value computed from the intensity exposure of the image. Histogram clipping for mean-BHEPL and median-BHEPL is then performed on these subhistograms using the mean and median values, respectively. Conventional histogram equalization is also implemented on each clipped subhistogram. The second proposed technique, ABHE, applies …

A Current-Based Simple Analog Mppt Circuit For Pv Systems, Bülent Büyükgüzel, Murat Aksoy Jan 2016

A Current-Based Simple Analog Mppt Circuit For Pv Systems, Bülent Büyükgüzel, Murat Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A new single pilot-sensor maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system, consisting of a buck type DC/DC converter, was developed. It is controlled by an analog-based unit. The main difference between the proposed MPPT system and other systems is that the short circuit current of the pilot-PV module in our system is used to control the DC/DC converter. The circuit of the proposed system does not utilize an expensive digital signal processor nor a microcontroller; hence, the cost and the complexity of the system are reduced.

Process Time And Mppt Performance Analysis Of Cf, Lut, And Ann Control Methods For A Pmsg-Based Wind Energy Generation System, Abdulhaki̇m Karakaya, Ercüment Karakaş

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Due to environmental issues such as global warming and the greenhouse effect, there is a growing interest in renewable sources of energy. Wind energy, which is the most important of these energy sources, can potentially meet a portion of the global energy demand. Numerous studies are being conducted worldwide to determine how the maximum level of power can be obtained from wind energy. In these studies, there is a particular interest in permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs). This is because PMSGs exhibit a good performance within a wide range wind speeds and can be driven directly. In this study, the …

Mormonism And The Scientific Persistence Of Circles: Aristotle, Spacetime, And One Eternal Round, Elizabeth Nielson Jan 2016

Mormonism And The Scientific Persistence Of Circles: Aristotle, Spacetime, And One Eternal Round, Elizabeth Nielson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The prominence of circles and circular motion has been one present in scientific discussion of the structure of the universe from Aristotle to Einstein. Development through Ptolemy, Copernicus and Kepler created elliptical variations, but in essence, the scientific community has been unable to break free of a certain degree of circular motion that ultimately seems fundamental to the very nature of the universe. Just as the circle featured prominently in Aristotle’s cosmology, it remains an integral aspect of reality, though perhaps it is more difficult to pick out in its present forms as planetary ellipses and curved space-time. In this …

Nephi’S Change Of Heart, Dennis Newton Jan 2016

Nephi’S Change Of Heart, Dennis Newton

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

How long did it take Nephi to compose his portions of the “small account?” Careful text analysis and data mining suggest that “Nephi’s” texts may have been composed across periods as great as forty years apart. I propose a timeline with four distinct periods of composition. The merits of this timeline are weighed, and some thoughts are explored as to how this timeline alters the reader’s perceptions of Nephi. The net effect is that Nephi becomes more sympathetic, more personable, and more relatable as his record progresses and that the totality of Nephi’s writings are best understood and interpreted when …

Inspiring Students To Value Reading, Ann C. Sharp, Lorilynn Brandt, Douglas S. Gardner

The Utah English Journal

Have you ever seen a struggling reader rally his friends to buy the same book at a school book fair, and then spearhead a series of literacy circle activities during recess time? Uncommon at best, right? Recently, one fourth grade teacher in Utah County while implementing reading motivational principles in her classroom reported just such an incident. In her words: “I have a group of boys in my class and one of them is a[n] extremely low reader and I don’t know if he has ever tried reading a chapter book or anything like that, and they made their own …

Constructing A Russian Elicited Imitation Exam, Troy Cox, Jennifer Bown, Jacob Burdis

Russian Language Journal

A Russian student wants to know if it is worth the expense to pay for an official ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). The director of a flagship program wants to measure the improvement of the oral proficiency of students returning from their in-country experience. A university department needs to provide evidence that their students are meeting learning objectives as part of accreditation. In each of these cases, a cost-effective, scalable solution to measuring oral proficiency would be helpful.

A Few Notes On Nabokov's Childhood Entomology, Victor Fet Jan 2016

A Few Notes On Nabokov's Childhood Entomology, Victor Fet

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Nabokov's lepidoptery long posed a question: Was he an amateur or a professional entomologist? Today, it has been amply demonstrated that he was a professional. Kurt Johnson says, "For Nabokov, as with many, fascination with the big picture books of butterflies as a young child grew to concerted collecting as a youngster. As with many scientists, these impressions of youth become a driving life force."3 Nabokov started collecting butterflies in 1906, at age seven, and never ceased; he published his first book of poems ten years later, at age seventeen; his first research paper on butterflies, at age twenty; …

An Implementation Of A High Accuracy Sensor For Distributed Wireless Sensor Network Applications, Jesse Craig Frye Jan 2016

An Implementation Of A High Accuracy Sensor For Distributed Wireless Sensor Network Applications, Jesse Craig Frye

Theses

Biopotentials are typically small electric signals, on the order of a few microvolts to hundreds of millivolts, produced as the result of cellular electrochemical activity in living organisms. Due to high source impedance, investigation of these small electrical signals typically requires use of clinical equipment or professional data acquisition systems that are large, expensive, and utilize AC mains power. Distributed sensor network applications need a low cost, high resolution wireless sensor, suitable for measuring and logging microvolt-level DC accurate signals from high impedance sources. Issues that must be addressed include processing power, power efficiency, auxiliary data storage, and wireless communication …

Performance Of Feature Selection Methods For Machine Learning Based Automatic Malarial Cell Recognition In Wholeslide Images, Vishnu Muralidharan.

Theses

This work is on investigation of automated detection of malaria parasites in wholeslide images of peripheral blood smears. We compared and analyzed several feature-selection methods for optimization of machine learning using support vector machine (SVM). To this end, cell samples were extracted from the wholeslide image and feature extraction was performed on these samples. In order to identify the best features, a host of feature selection methods were tested. For each set of selected features, the SVM was trained and tuned for optimal model selection using cross-validation and grid-search. Subsequently, test samples were classified using the model. Each feature selection …

Computational Modeling Of Fragmentation Of Bimetallic Shells, Benjamin M. Beeker Jan 2016

Computational Modeling Of Fragmentation Of Bimetallic Shells, Benjamin M. Beeker

Theses

Fragmentation of bimetallic shells under explosive loading has been modeled computationally. In particular, the effects of varying material percentages on the fragmentation characteristics (average fragment size, mass distribution of the fragments) were investigated. The two materials considered in this study are Oxygen-Free High Thermal Conductivity (OFHC) Copper (as the inner layer) and Inconel 718 (as the outer layer). Several shell dimensions were considered, and the percentage of each of the materials were varied for each shell dimension. The numerical results indicate that compared to monolithic shells, bimetallic shells with a small percentage of copper (as the inner layer) may be …

Imbalances in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) proteostasis are associated with etiologically-diverse degenerative diseases linked to excessive extracellular protein misfolding and aggregation. Reprogramming of the ER proteostasis environment through genetic activation of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR)-associated transcription factor ATF6 attenuates secretion and extracellular aggregation of amyloidogenic proteins. Here, we employed a screening approach that included complementary arm-specific UPR reporters and medium-throughput transcriptional profiling to identify non-toxic small molecules that phenocopy the ATF6-mediated reprogramming of the ER proteostasis environment. The ER reprogramming afforded by our molecules requires activation of endogenous ATF6 and occurs independent of global ER stress. Furthermore, our molecules phenocopy …
