Sensitivity Analysis For The Pmv Thermal Comfort Model And The Use Of Wearable Devices To Enhance Its Accuracy, Mohammad H. Hasan, Fadi M. Alsaleem, Mostafa Rafaie

International High Performance Buildings Conference

This paper studies the sensitivity of the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) thermal comfort model relative to its environmental and personal parameters. PMV model equations, adapted in the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 55–Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy, are used in this investigation to generate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) comfort zone plots for different combinations of parameters. It is found that personal parameters such as clothing and metabolic rate, which are usually ignored or simply assumed to be constant values, have the highest impact. In this work, we demonstrate the use of smart wearable …

Parallel Object-Oriented Algorithms For Building Performance Simulation. Application To An Existing Dwelling., Lopez Joan, Capdevila Roser, Souaihi Oussama, Rigola Joaquim, Oliva Assensi

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In the present work an existing dwelling, situated in the Netherlands, has been modeled by means of a parallel object-oriented simulation tool, called NEST-Buildings. The model is based on a pre-defined collection of elements (e.g., walls, rooms, openings, outdoors, occupants, ventilation tubes and boxes, solar radiation distributors, HVAC equipment, etc.) that are connected to each other conforming a dynamic thermal system. New configurations can be easily handled by adding or removing elements. Moreover, the building elements can be modeled at distinct levels of accuracy ranging from lumped volumes mixed with one-dimensional to detailed CFD&HT models. This approach makes possible the …

Stochastic Modeling Of Short-Term Occupancy For Energy Efficient Buildings, Jin Dong, Chris Winstead, Seddik M. Djouadi, James J. Nutaro, Teja Kuruganti Jan 2016

Stochastic Modeling Of Short-Term Occupancy For Energy Efficient Buildings, Jin Dong, Chris Winstead, Seddik M. Djouadi, James J. Nutaro, Teja Kuruganti

International High Performance Buildings Conference

The primary energy consumer of smart buildings are Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems, approximately 30% of the building energy use, which usually operate on a fixed schedule. Currently, most modern buildings still condition rooms with a set-point assuming maximum occupancy rather than actual usage. As a result, rooms are often over-conditioned needlessly. Occupancy-based controls can achieve significant energy savings by temporally matching the building energy consumption and building usage, conservative user behavior can save a third of expended energy. Â In this paper, we present a simple yet effective algorithm to automatically assign reference temperature set-points based on the …

System Identification For Model Predictive Control Of Building Region Temperature, Matthew J Ellis, Michael J Wenzel, Robert D Turney Jan 2016

System Identification For Model Predictive Control Of Building Region Temperature, Matthew J Ellis, Michael J Wenzel, Robert D Turney

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Model predictive control (MPC) is a promising technology for energy cost optimization of buildings because it provides a natural framework for optimally controlling such systems by computing control actions that minimize the energy cost while meeting constraints. In our previous work, we developed a cascaded MPC framework capable of minimizing the energy cost of building zone temperature control applications. The outer loop MPC computes power set-points to minimize the energy cost while ensuring that the zone temperature is maintained within its comfort constraints. The inner loop MPC receives the power set-points from the outer loop MPC and manipulates the zone …

A Multi-Objective Approach To Optimal Battery Storage In The Presence Of Demand Charges, Reza Kamyar, Matthew Monnig Peet Jan 2016

A Multi-Objective Approach To Optimal Battery Storage In The Presence Of Demand Charges, Reza Kamyar, Matthew Monnig Peet

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for optimal energy storage, in the form of batteries, by residential customers. Our goal is to determine the value of battery storage to those customers whose electricity bills consist of both Time-of-Use charges ($/kWh, with different rates for on-peak and off-peak hours) and demand charges ($/kW, proportional to the peak rate of consumption in a month). The customers may have access to a local power generating source in the form of solar PhotoVoltaic (PV). In order to quantify the benefits from the battery storage, we pose a battery optimization problem which minimizes …

Adaptive Personalized Shading Control Strategies To Maximize Occupant Satisfaction While Reducing Lighting Energy Use In Buildings, Jie Xiong, Seungjae Lee, Athanasios Tzempelikos, Panagiota Karava Jan 2016

Adaptive Personalized Shading Control Strategies To Maximize Occupant Satisfaction While Reducing Lighting Energy Use In Buildings, Jie Xiong, Seungjae Lee, Athanasios Tzempelikos, Panagiota Karava

International High Performance Buildings Conference

In this study, a personalized shading control framework is developed to maximize occupant satisfaction while minimizing lighting energy use using a multi-objective optimization scheme. A personalized satisfaction model was developed based on specially-designed experiments in private offices, to quantify the occupant satisfaction level with motorized roller shades by predicting the override probability of occupants considering different variables. Then, a multi-objective optimization algorithm was constructed, considering the shading override probability and predicted lighting energy use as objectives, where the occupants are the decision makers in the final balancing between their personalized comfort limits and energy use considerations. The developed method serves …

Independent Domination Of Subcubic Graphs, Bruce Allan Priddy Jan 2016

Independent Domination Of Subcubic Graphs, Bruce Allan Priddy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let G be a simple graph. The independent domination number i(G) is the minimum cardinality among all maximal independent sets of G. A graph is subcubic whenever the maximum degree is at most three. In this paper, we will show that the independent domination number of a connected subcubic graph of order n having minimum degree at least two is at most 3(n+1)/7, providing a sharp upper bound for subcubic connected graphs with minimum degree at least two.

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The continually growing market for metal components fabricated using additive manufacturing (AM) processes has called for a greater understanding of the effects of process variables on the melt pool geometry and microstructure in manufactured components for various alloy systems. Process Mapping is a general approach that traces the influence of process parameters to thermal behavior and feature development during AM processing. Previous work has focused mainly on Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64), but this work uses novel mathematical derivations and adapted process mapping methodologies to construct new geometric, thermal, and microstructural process maps for Ti64 and two nickel superalloy material systems. This work …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) with potential applications at =2700°F (1482°C) are of significant interest to the Air Force. The high temperature performance of SiC fibers used within these composites is greatly affected by the presence of amorphous SiOC and free carbon in the fibers. Therefore quantification of this non SiC material in commercially available SiC fibers is extremely important. In this work Hi Nicalon, Hi-Nicalon Type-S, Tyranno-SA3, Cef-NITE, and Sylramic SiC fibers were studied. Changes in mass, grain size, and amorphous content were measured as a function of processing temperature and time. The amorphous material in each fiber was …

With the increased use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in consumer products, the need to monitor their release into environmental soils has become critical. Although minerals make up a large component of soils, research on their interactions with AgNPs is still limited. Furthermore, the majority of the existing research focused on silica-based minerals rather than metal oxides, which is the second most abundant mineral type in the earth's crust. This study examined for the first time the aqueous interaction between the widely used, spherical Creighton AgNPs and a-corundum (a-Al2O3), a representative non-silica-based mineral, at environmentally relevant pH values (6-11). Samples were …

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a worldwide pathogen that affects humans and has the ability to establish a latent state of infection in the sensory nerve ganglia after primary infection of epithelial cells (Boutell and Everett, 2003). HSV-1 is a very contagious virus, which can be transmitted from person to person and cause cold sores in the infected person. Rarely, infection can lead to more serious complications, such as encephalitis. Most HSV-1 infections usually occur in childhood with lifelong potential for symptomatic or asymptomatic viral shedding episodes (Looker et al., 2015). HSV- 1 infects 60%-80% of people throughout …

Towards An Automated Tool Chain For Mpc In Multi-Zone Buildings, Filip Jorissen, Lieve Helsen Jan 2016

Towards An Automated Tool Chain For Mpc In Multi-Zone Buildings, Filip Jorissen, Lieve Helsen

International High Performance Buildings Conference

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) represents a large fraction of the world’s primary energy demand. Novel control strategies such as Model Predictive Control (MPC) aim to reduce energy use, while also improving occupant comfort. For MPC to be a viable alternative to classical Rule Based Control (RBC), it should be able to incorporate multiple emission and production systems, multiple zones, and aspects such as thermal comfort and indoor air quality (IAQ). Identifying grey-box or black-box MPC controller models for hybrid energy systems in multi-zone buildings has proven to be difficult. White-box models use physical knowledge of the system and …

Autonomous Optimization And Control For Central Plants With Energy Storage, Michael J. Wenzel, Robert D. Turney, Kirk H. Drees

International High Performance Buildings Conference

A model predictive control (MPC) framework is used to determine how to optimize the distribution of energy resources across a central energy facility including chillers, water heaters, and thermal energy storage; present the results to an operator; and execute the plan. The objective of this MPC framework is to minimize cost in real-time in response to both real-time energy prices and demand charges as well as allow the operator to appropriately interact with the system. Operators must be given the correct intersection points in order to build trust before they are willing to turn the tool over and put it …

Development Of A General Numerical Methodology For Cfd Analyses In Sliding Vane Machines And Application On A Mid-Size Oil Injected Air Compressor, Giuseppe Bianchi, Sham Rane, Ahmed Kovacevic, Roberto Cipollone, Stefano Murgia, Giulio Contaldi Jan 2016

Development Of A General Numerical Methodology For Cfd Analyses In Sliding Vane Machines And Application On A Mid-Size Oil Injected Air Compressor, Giuseppe Bianchi, Sham Rane, Ahmed Kovacevic, Roberto Cipollone, Stefano Murgia, Giulio Contaldi

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The current work presents the development of a numerical methodology to investigate sliding vane rotary machines by means of advanced design tools such as the Computational Fluid Dynamics ones. Although highly limited in this topic, literature shows that the major constraint for the employment of such approaches is the deformation and motion of the rotor mesh, i.e. the computational grid related to the fluid volume between stator, rotor and blades of the positive displacement vane device. To address these issues, a novel grid generation approach is herein proposed and accomplished through a series of steps: geometrical 2D modeling of the …

Prediction Of Air-Side Particulate Fouling Of Hvac&R Heat Exchangers, H. Inamdar, E. A. Groll, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella Jan 2016

Prediction Of Air-Side Particulate Fouling Of Hvac&R Heat Exchangers, H. Inamdar, E. A. Groll, J. A. Weibel, S V. Garimella

CTRC Research Publications

Air-to-refrigerant heat exchangers used in heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems routinely experience air-side fouling due to the presence of particulates in outdoor and indoor environments. The influence on the performance of the heat exchanger, in terms of heat transfer efficiency and pressure drop imposed, depends on the extent of air-side fouling. Fouling of a heat exchanger is determined by a variety of parameters such as the dimensions of the heat exchanger, physical properties of the airborne particulates, and airflow conditions over the heat exchange surfaces. A comprehensive model is developed to deterministically calculate the extent of fouling of a …

Missing Gene Identification Using Functional Coherence Scores, Meghana Chitale, Ishita K. Khan, Daisuke Kihara

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Reconstructing metabolic and signaling pathways is an effective way of interpreting a genome sequence. A challenge in a pathway reconstruction is that often genes in a pathway cannot be easily found, reflecting current imperfect information of the target organism. In this work, we developed a new method for finding missing genes, which integrates multiple features, including gene expression, phylogenetic profile, and function association scores. Particularly, for considering function association between candidate genes and neighboring proteins to the target missing gene in the network, we used Co-occurrence Association Score (CAS) and PubMed Association Score (PAS), which are designed for capturing functional …

Sparse Non-Negative Matrix Factorization For Mesh Segmentation, Tim Mcgraw, Jisun Kang, Donald Herring Jan 2016

Sparse Non-Negative Matrix Factorization For Mesh Segmentation, Tim Mcgraw, Jisun Kang, Donald Herring

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

We present a method for 3D mesh segmentation based on sparse non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). Image analysis techniques based on NMF have been shown to decompose images into semantically meaningful local features. Since the features and coefficients are represented in terms of non-negative values, the features contribute to the resulting images in an intuitive, additive fashion. Like spectral mesh segmentation, our method relies on the construction of an affinity matrix which depends on the geometric properties of the mesh. We show that segmentation based on the NMF is simpler to implement, and can result in more meaningful segmentation results than …

Identified Research Directions For Using Manufacturing Knowledge Earlier In The Product Lifecycle, Thomas D. Hedberg Jr, Nathan W. Hartman, Phil Rosche, Kevin Fischer

Computer Graphics Technology Faculty Publications

Design for manufacturing (DFM), especially the use of manufacturing knowledge to support design decisions, has received attention in the academic domain. However, industry practice has not been studied enough to provide solutions that are mature for industry. The current state of the art for DFM is often rule-based functionality within computer-aided design (CAD) systems that enforce specific design requirements. That rule-based functionality may or may not dynamically affect geometry definition. And, if rule-based functionality exists in the CAD system, it is typically a customisation on a case-by-case basis. Manufacturing knowledge is a phrase with vast meanings, which may include knowledge …

The purposes of the following studies were to investigate natural and human influences on several spatial and temporal aspects of a local and regional environment. The decreasing discharge rate of the ground water supplied Yellow Spring may be caused by the increase in population of the nearby Village of Yellow Springs, Ohio. Periodic measurements of Yellow Spring's discharge rate compared to changes in the town's population showed an inverse relationship, where spring discharge declined as population grew. A sharp decrease in discharge occurred during a period when the spring's facade was modified and an airport was built partially overlying the …

Theoretical Estimation Of PkA'S Of Pyrimidines And Related Heterocycles, Rachael Ann Wessner

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Pyrimidines and related heterocycles are an important class of compounds with a wide variety of applications. As a result, there is great interest in the chemical properties of these compounds, specifically their pKa's. Despite the importance of these compounds their reported pKa's are often only approximations or are completely absent from literature. Experimentally measuring pKa's can be challenging, especially if the pKa is below zero. Alternatively, pKa's can be estimated computationally using a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR). However, most of the compounds included in this study exist as two or more forms that arise from tautomerism. Tautomerism complicates the estimation …

Print books pose inherent difficulties for researchers who want to observe users’ natural in-book reading patterns. With e-books and logs of their use it is now possible to track several aspects of users’ interactions inside e-books, including the number and duration of their sessions with an e-book and the order in which pages are viewed. This chapter reports on a study of one-year of EBL user log data from Purdue University to identify different reading patterns or ways in which users navigate within different types of e-books—authored monographs vs. edited collections--and in e-books in different subject areas. The analysis of …
