Wayne State University Dissertations

Software as a service is well accepted software deployment and distribution model that is grown exponentially in the last few years. One of the biggest benefits of SaaS is the automated composition of these services in a composite system. It allows users to automatically find and bind these services, as to maximize the productivity of their composed systems, meeting both functional and non-functional requirements. In this paper we present a framework for modeling the dependency relationship of different Quality of Service parameters of a component service. Our proposed approach considers the different invocation patterns of component services in the system …

System Support For Energy Efficient Mobile Computing, Youhuizi Li Jan 2016

System Support For Energy Efficient Mobile Computing, Youhuizi Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Mobile devices are developed rapidly and they have been an integrated part of our daily life. With the blooming of Internet of Things, mobile computing will become more and more important. However, the battery drain problem is a critical issue that hurts user experience. High performance devices require more power support, while the battery capacity only increases 5% per year on average. Researchers are working on kinds of energy saving approaches. For examples, hardware components provide different power state to save idle power; operating systems provide power management APIs to better control power dissipation. However, the system energy efficiency is …

Neural Circuitry Deficits Associated With Dysfunctional Myelin, Kathleen June Maheras Jan 2016

Neural Circuitry Deficits Associated With Dysfunctional Myelin, Kathleen June Maheras

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the current study, we have generated mutant mice that lack Claudin 11 (Cldn11) tight junctions in CNS myelin sheaths. In myelin sheaths, Cldn11 forms tight junctions located along the outer and inner edges of the membrane spiral, preventing ions and small molecules from entering the intramyelinic space. The function of Cldn11 tight junctions is to improve the passive properties of the myelin membrane, by increasing membrane resistance and reducing capacitance, thereby improving the speed of saltatory conduction. In the absence of Cldn11, conduction velocity is slowed, most dramatically in small diameter myelinated fibers, somewhat analogous to reducing myelin thickness. …

Essays On Oil Price Volatility And Irreversible Investment, Daniel Joseph Pastor Jan 2016

Essays On Oil Price Volatility And Irreversible Investment, Daniel Joseph Pastor

Wayne State University Dissertations

In chapter 1, we provide an extensive and systematic evaluation of the relative

forecasting performance of several models for the volatility of daily spot

crude oil prices. Empirical research over the past decades has uncovered

significant gains in forecasting performance of Markov Switching GARCH

models over GARCH models for the volatility of financial assets and crude

oil futures. We find that, for spot oil price returns, non-switching models

perform better in the short run, whereas switching models tend to do better

at longer horizons.

In chapter 2, I investigate the impact of volatility on firms' irreversible investment decisions using real …

Sharing-Aware Resource Management Algorithms For Virtual Computing Environments, Safraz Rampersaud Jan 2016

Sharing-Aware Resource Management Algorithms For Virtual Computing Environments, Safraz Rampersaud

Wayne State University Dissertations

Virtualization technologies in cloud computing are ubiquitous throughout data centers around the world where providers consider operational costs and fast delivery guarantees for a variety of profitable services. These providers should consistently invoke measures for increasing the efficiencies of their virtualized services in a competitive environment where fast entry to market, technology advancement, and service price differentials separate sustaining providers from antiquated ones. Therefore, providers seeking further efficiencies and profit opportunities should consider how their resources are managed in virtual computing environments which leverage memory reclamation techniques, specifically page-sharing; motivating the design of new memory sharing-aware resource management algorithms. In …

Parental Schooling And Child Health: Evidence From Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, Udbodha Ushakar Rijal

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study applies bivariate probit models to the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data set to explore the effects of parental schooling on the physical and mental health of child and the underlying mechanism of the transmission of these beneficial effects. Using the perceived physical and mental health status of child as the outcome variable, the results indicate that the benefits of parental schooling increases with levels of parental schooling; mother’s schooling has greater impacts than father’s; and the impacts of parental schooling on physical health of child is slightly larger than on mental health. For instance, relative to having No …

Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance, Mosad Helsan Alkhathami Jan 2016

Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance, Mosad Helsan Alkhathami

Wayne State University Dissertations

To control the border more effectively, countries may deploy a detection system that enables real-time surveillance of border integrity. Events such as border crossings need to be monitored in real time so that any border entries can be noted by border security forces and destinations marked for apprehension. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are promising for border security surveillance because they enable enforcement teams to monitor events in the physical environment. In this work, probabilistic models have been presented to investigate senor development schemes while considering the environmental factors that affect the sensor performance. Simulation studies have been carried out using …

Effective Drug Treatment Induces Drug Resistance Through Rapid Genome Alteration-Mediated Cancer Evolution, Steven Horne Jan 2016

Effective Drug Treatment Induces Drug Resistance Through Rapid Genome Alteration-Mediated Cancer Evolution, Steven Horne

Wayne State University Dissertations

The central paradox associated with current cancer therapeutic strategies is initially effective treatment, which eliminates a high tumor cell count, consistently results in successful drug resistance. Mathematical and evolutionary modeling have previously suggested that therapeutic intervention could provide selective pressure for the expansion of resistant variants. Drug-related stress has been associated with genome chaos, a common phenomenon in cancer characterized as rapid, stochastic genomic fragmentation and reorganization. Since cancer represents an evolutionary process, analysis within the context of genome-mediated cancer evolution can shed light on this key problem of therapeutics. We propose that genomic change is a general response to …

Novel Regression Models For High-Dimensional Survival Analysis, Yan Li Jan 2016

Novel Regression Models For High-Dimensional Survival Analysis, Yan Li

Wayne State University Dissertations

Survival analysis aims to predict the occurrence of specific events of interest at future time points. The presence of incomplete observations due to censoring brings unique challenges in this domain and differentiates survival analysis techniques from other standard regression methods. In this thesis, we propose four models to deal with the high-dimensional survival analysis. Firstly, we propose a regularized linear regression model with weighted least-squares to handle the survival prediction in the presence of censored instances. We employ the elastic net penalty term for inducing sparsity into the linear model to effectively handle high-dimensional data. As opposed to the existing …

Meta-Synthesis Of Sampling Methods Using Coding Strategies And Social Media For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Nursing Students, Timberly Robinson Robinson

Wayne State University Dissertations

In 2010, the birth of an aggressive strategy began to emerge aimed to increase the number of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) individuals in professional healthcare fields. Employers and higher education admission officials desired more research. Data revealed that the field of nursing had a higher percentage of Deaf and Hard of Hearing professionals than other areas. Yet, there is a gap in the literature related to in-depth accounts about the learning experience and clinical training of D/HH nursing students. A phenomenological study was conducted to examine nursing experiences (homogenous sampling) compared to other clinical and non-clinical D/HH majors …

A Genesis Of Conflict: The Zero-Sum Mindset, Jonathan R. Cohen Jan 2016

A Genesis Of Conflict: The Zero-Sum Mindset, Jonathan R. Cohen

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Parties in conflict often operate under the assumption that for one party to win, the other party must lose. This concept, known as the "zero-sum mindset, " can lead to undesirable results, both because it can make disputes harder to resolve and because people holding such beliefs are more likely to get into conflicts to begin with. Over the past several decades, legal educators specializing in dispute resolution have worked hard to challenge that mindset. This task is not simple, for framing conflict in zero-sum terms has very deep cultural roots tracing back at least to the Biblical stories in …

Gendered Differences In Negotiation: Advancing An Understanding Of Sources, Effects, And Awareness, Stacy M. Roberts Jan 2016

Gendered Differences In Negotiation: Advancing An Understanding Of Sources, Effects, And Awareness, Stacy M. Roberts

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Conversations about gendered differences in negotiation have been around for decades. However, recent research about these gendered differences is expanding our understanding of gender stereotypes and role expectations in negotiation. This article reviews some of this research and discusses how awareness of gendered differences can be advantageous to both male and female negotiators.

One's self-identity hinges on more than just gender; for example, cultural values, economic class, ethnic origin, geographic location, group affiliations, hobbies, language and dialect, national citizenship, occupation, personal values, race, religion, self-interests, sexual orientation, social status, etc., also play parts in forming one's self identity. These factors …

Critical Quality Attributes Of Topical Semi-Solid Dosage Forms: Solvent Activity, Muralikrishnan Angamuthu Jan 2016

Critical Quality Attributes Of Topical Semi-Solid Dosage Forms: Solvent Activity, Muralikrishnan Angamuthu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Critical quality attribute has been defined as “a physical, chemical, biological or microbiological property or characteristic that should be within an appropriate limit, range, or distribution to ensure the desired product quality”. Deviations from preset quality metrics may potentially result in drug products with inferior therapeutic efficacy and unacceptable clinical safety profile. Topical cream formulations may possess numerous quality attributes that can affect the permeation of the drug through skin and consequently therapeutic efficacy. CQAs of topical formulations are often aimed at characterizing either the physicochemical properties of APIs or bulk characteristics of the formulation itself. Solvent systems constitute a …

Hot-Melt Extrusion: A Versatile Pharmaceutical Technology, Hemlata Patil Jan 2016

Hot-Melt Extrusion: A Versatile Pharmaceutical Technology, Hemlata Patil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hot-melt extrusion (HME) is a promising technology for the production of new chemical entities in the developmental pipeline and for improving products already on the market. The first objective of this research work was to describe a continuous process for the production of solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) as drug-carrier systems via hot-melt extrusion (HME) using Quality by Design (QbD) principles. Fenofibrate SLN were prepared by combining two processes: HME technology for melt-emulsification and high-pressure homogenization (HPH) for size reduction. Varying the process parameters enabled the production of SLN below 200 nm. At the end of a 5-h in-vitro dissolution study, …

Nlpc/P60 Domain-Containing Proteins Of Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis That Differentially Bind And Hydrolyze Peptidoglycan, J. P. Bannantine, Cari K. Lingle, Philip R. Adam, Kasra X. Ramyar, William J. Mcwhorter, William D. Picking, Brian V. Geisbrecht

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A subset of proteins containing NlpC/P60 domains are bacterial peptidoglycan hydrolases that cleave noncanonical peptide linkages and contribute to cell wall remodeling as well as cell separation during late stages of division. Some of these proteins have been shown to cleave peptidoglycan in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and play a role in Mycobacterium marinum virulence of zebra fish; however, there are still significant knowledge gaps concerning the molecular function of these proteins in Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). The MAP genome sequence encodes five NlpC/P60 domain-containing proteins. We describe atomic resolution crystal structures of two such MAP proteins, MAP_1272c and MAP_1204. These …

Vapor Deposited Cr-Doped Zns Thin Films: Towards Optically Pumped Mid-Infrared Waveguide Lasers, Eric A. Karhu, Charles R. Ildstad, Stefano Poggio, Vedran Furtula, Nikolai Tolstik, Irina T. Sorokina, Joseph J. Belbruno, Ursula J. Gibson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Compact, affordable mid-IR lasers require the development of gain materials in waveguide form. We report on the high vacuum deposition of Cr:ZnS films with concentration ranging from 1018-1020 dopants/cm3 . At low concentrations, films display well-isolated absorption associated with substitutional Cr2+ ions in the lattice. Spatial modulation of the dopant concentration suppresses the absorption associated with this substitution. Lateral crystallite sizes less than 30 nm are associated with the lowest substrate temperatures (<50 °C) used during deposition, and waveguide losses as low as 8dB/cm are observed. These materials are promising candidates as gain media for fabrication of waveguide mid-IR lasers.

Subreption, Radical Institutionalism, And Evolutionary Economics, John B. Hall, Alexander Dunlap, Joe Mitchell-Nelson Jan 2016

Subreption, Radical Institutionalism, And Evolutionary Economics, John B. Hall, Alexander Dunlap, Joe Mitchell-Nelson

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This inquiry seeks to establish the importance of subreption as an approach to economic and social evolution that also proves integral to the tradition of radical institutionalism. We relate subreption’s etymology and appearances in Roman, Canon and Scots Law, as well as in Philosophy, to its applications found in writings advanced by Thorstein Veblen and carried on later as William Dugger details the rise of corporate hegemony. Understood as an approach derivable from selected philosophical writings of Immanuel Kant, in social science subreption is suggested to occur through the introduction of an outside value that sets off a form of …

A Comparison Of Shovel Testing And Surface Collection As Archaeological Site Discovery Methods: A Case Study Using Mississippian Farmsteads, Cameron Smith Howell Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Shovel Testing And Surface Collection As Archaeological Site Discovery Methods: A Case Study Using Mississippian Farmsteads, Cameron Smith Howell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Shovel testing and controlled surface collection are commethods of archaeological site investigation that are generally approved by state and federal agencies as well as the academic community for cultural resource management projects and research. While both techniques are equally utilized, little research has been conducted on how equivalent these techniques are in terms of their efficacy for finding site. This thesis seeks to find a way to compare these techniques by creating mathematical models to describe how well the methods behave when tested on known datasets generated from Mississippian period farmsteads. The predicted performance can then be compared to real …

The mobility of chemically persistent metals in riparian wetland systems that could have a detrimental impact on the environment is an area of active research. This study utilized a physical model consisting of open water and wetland cells designed to simulate a natural riparian wetland to examine the mobility of five metals. The objective of the study was to determine if riparian wetlands have the potential to serve as permanent sinks for metals, or if they only serve as temporary sinks and with time metals could be remobilized and released. Specifically, this study examined the long-term behavior of Co, Cu, …

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang Jan 2016

On Topological Indices And Domination Numbers Of Graphs, Shaohui Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Topological indices and dominating problems are popular topics in Graph Theory. There are various topological indices such as degree-based topological indices, distance-based topological indices and counting related topological indices et al. These topological indices correlate certain physicochemical properties such as boiling point, stability of chemical compounds. The concepts of domination number and independent domination number, introduced from the mid-1860s, are very fundamental in Graph Theory. In this dissertation, we provide new theoretical results on these two topics. We study k-trees and cactus graphs with the sharp upper and lower bounds of the degree-based topological indices(Multiplicative Zagreb indices). The extremal cacti …

Bacteria Prediction For Recreational Waters Through The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks, Christopher Douglas Jan 2016

Bacteria Prediction For Recreational Waters Through The Use Of Artificial Neural Networks, Christopher Douglas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many scientists and government agencies rely on Fecal Indicator Bacteria (FIB) to determine the risk of exposure to pathogens in water. If there is a presence of these indicator bacteria, pathogenic microorganisms may also be present. These bacteria in recreational water bodies pose a health threat to people if ingested during activities such as swimming or from the consumption of marine life. The most commonly tested FIBs are total coliforms, Fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, Fecal streptococci, and enterococci. The measurement of bacteria can be time consuming (up to 48 hours) and expensive, creating a difficulty in warning the public of …

Ultrashort Pulse Generation In Inas Quantum Dot Semiconductors, Patrick Finch Jan 2016

Ultrashort Pulse Generation In Inas Quantum Dot Semiconductors, Patrick Finch

Theses

In this thesis, the effect of operating two-section InAs quantum dot passively mode- locked semiconductor lasers in the random population regime is examined in detail in an attempt to achieve wide optical bandwidths and ultrashort optical pulses. It is demonstrated in this work that large increases in optical bandwidths can be observed in the random population regime. Random population was achieved with an undoped device by lowering the operating temperature to 20 K. An emission bandwidth of 27 nm was measured using an undoped device at 20 K, with corresponding pulses of 290 fs, shorter than any previously reported with …
