Meta-Mindfulness: A New Hope, Peter Huang Jan 2016

Meta-Mindfulness: A New Hope, Peter Huang

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This Essay starts by tracing its humble origins to an earlier, related and unique law review article, namely, Tiger Cub Strikes Back: Memoirs of an Ex-Child Prodigy About Legal Education and Parenting. This Essay describes various professional responses to Tiger Cub Strikes Back, provides an update of some developments in research about parenting and legal education since Tiger Cub Strikes Back, and recounts a few personal stories about mindfulness and related to being an ex-child prodigy. This Essay then analyzes meta-mindfulness, defined as mindfulness about mindfulness. This Essay discusses how mindfulness about mindfulness can help facilitate the positive transformation of …

Nonexistence Of Nonquadratic Kerdock Sets In Six Variables, John Clikeman Jan 2016

Nonexistence Of Nonquadratic Kerdock Sets In Six Variables, John Clikeman

Honors Theses

Kerdock sets are maximally sized sets of boolean functions such that the sum of any two functions in the set is bent. This paper modifies the methodology of a paper by Phelps (2015) to the problem of finding Kerdock sets in six variables containing non-quadratic elements. Using a computer search, we demonstrate that no Kerdock sets exist containing non-quadratic six- variable bent functions, and that the largest bent set containing such functions has size 8.

Black Carbon Concentrations From A Tibetan Plateau Ice Core Spanning 1843–1982: Recent Increases Due To Emissions And Glacier Melt, Susan Kaspari, Matthew Jenkins, Shi-Chang Kang, Bjorn Grigholm Jan 2016

Black Carbon Concentrations From A Tibetan Plateau Ice Core Spanning 1843–1982: Recent Increases Due To Emissions And Glacier Melt, Susan Kaspari, Matthew Jenkins, Shi-Chang Kang, Bjorn Grigholm

Geological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Black carbon (BC) deposited on snow and glacier surfaces can reduce albedo and lead to accelerated melt. An ice core recovered from Guoqu glacier on Mt. Geladaindong and analyzed using a Single Particle Soot Photometer provides the first long-term 5 (1843–1982) record of BC concentrations from the Central Tibetan Plateau. The highest concentrations are observed from 1975–1982, which corresponds to a 2.0-fold and 2.4-fold increase in average and median values, respectively, relative to 1843–1940. BC concentrations post-1940 are also elevated relative to the earlier portion of the record. Causes for the higher BC concentrations include increased regional BC emissions and …

In God We Trust. All Others Must Bring Data. - W. Edwards Deming Using Word Embeddings To Recognize Idioms, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman Jan 2016

In God We Trust. All Others Must Bring Data. - W. Edwards Deming Using Word Embeddings To Recognize Idioms, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Expressions, such as add fuel to the fire, can be interpreted literally or idiomatically depending on the context they occur in. Many Natural Language Processing applications could improve their performance if idiom recognition were improved. Our approach is based on the idea that idioms violate cohesive ties in local contexts, while literal expressions do not. We propose two approaches: 1) Compute inner product of context word vectors with the vector representing a target expression. Since literal vectors predict well local contexts, their inner product with contexts should be larger than idiomatic ones, thereby telling apart literals from idioms; and (2) …

Induced Subgraph Saturated Graphs, Craig M. Tennenhouse Jan 2016

Induced Subgraph Saturated Graphs, Craig M. Tennenhouse

Theory & Applications of Graphs

A graph G is said to be H-saturated if G contains no subgraph isomorphic to H but the addition of any edge between non-adjacent vertices in G creates one. While induced subgraphs are often studied in the extremal case with regard to the removal of edges, we extend saturation to induced subgraphs. We say that G is induced H-saturated if G contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to H and the addition of any edge to G results in an induced copy of H. We demonstrate constructively that there are non-trivial examples of saturated graphs for …

On Minimum Spanning Subgraphs Of Graphs With Proper Connection Number 2, Zhenming Bi, Gary Chartrand, Garry L. Johns, Ping Zhang Jan 2016

On Minimum Spanning Subgraphs Of Graphs With Proper Connection Number 2, Zhenming Bi, Gary Chartrand, Garry L. Johns, Ping Zhang

Theory & Applications of Graphs

An edge coloring of a connected graph G is a proper-path coloring if every two vertices of G are connected by a properly colored path. The minimum number of colors required of a proper-path coloring of G is called the proper connection number pc(G) of G. For a connected graph G with proper connection number 2, the minimum size of a connected spanning subgraph H of G with pc(H) = 2 is denoted by μ(G). It is shown that if s and t are integers such that t ≥ s + 2 ≥ 5 …

Assessing The Impact Of Vertical Land Motion On Twentieth Century Global Mean Sea Level Estimates, B. D. Hamlington, P. Thompson, W. C. Hammond, G. Blewitt, R. D. Ray Jan 2016

Assessing The Impact Of Vertical Land Motion On Twentieth Century Global Mean Sea Level Estimates, B. D. Hamlington, P. Thompson, W. C. Hammond, G. Blewitt, R. D. Ray

CCPO Publications

Near-global and continuous measurements from satellite altimetry have provided accurate estimates of global mean sea level in the past two decades. Extending these estimates further into the past is a challenge using the historical tide gauge records. Not only is sampling nonuniform in both space and time, but tide gauges are also affected by vertical land motion (VLM) that creates a relative sea level change not representative of ocean variability. To allow for comparisons to the satellite altimetry estimated global mean sea level (GMSL), typically the tide gauges are corrected using glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) models. This approach, however, does …

The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox Jan 2016

The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox

All Master's Theses

High-resolution charcoal and pollen analyses were used to reconstruct a 16,000-year-long fire and vegetation history of the Blair Lake watershed in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon. The record shows that during the late glacial period, overall fire frequency was relatively low. Pinus and Abies were the dominant vegetation, along with Pseudotsuga and Alnus, suggesting that an open-canopy conifer forest developed soon after the area was glacier free. Fire frequency increased during the early Holocene. Warmer and drier conditions are reflected in the herbaceous vegetation, Artemisia, Poaceae, and Cyperaceae, suggesting that meadows or other openings were part of …

Population Definitions For Comparative Surveys In Education, Martin Murphy

Assessment and Reporting

This paper provides an overview of population definitions for large-scale comparative educational surveys. It has been prepared to help inform the development of a population definition and sampling framework that will be used in the British Council Global English research project. This paper examines a number of large-scale surveys including the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), which is conducted by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), as well as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and the Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO), both of which the Organisation for Economic Co-operation …

Generalized Bertrand Curves With Spacelike $\Left(1,3\Right) $-Normal Plane In Minkowski Space-Time, Ali̇ Uçum, Osman Keçi̇li̇oğlu, Kazim İlarslan Jan 2016

Generalized Bertrand Curves With Spacelike $\Left(1,3\Right) $-Normal Plane In Minkowski Space-Time, Ali̇ Uçum, Osman Keçi̇li̇oğlu, Kazim İlarslan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

In this paper, we reconsider the $(1,3)$-Bertrand curves with respect to the casual characters of a $\left( 1,3\right) $-normal plane that is a plane spanned by the principal normal and the second binormal vector fields of the given curve. Here, we restrict our investigation of $(1,3)$-Bertrand curves to the spacelike $\left( 1,3\right) $-normal plane in Minkowski space-time. We obtain the necessary and sufficient conditions for the curves with spacelike $\left( 1,3\right) $-normal plane to be $(1,3)$-Bertrand curves and we give the related examples for these curves.

Anti-Invariant Riemannian Submersions From Kenmotsu Manifolds Onto Riemannian Manifolds, Ayşe Beri̇, İrem Küpeli̇ Erken, Cengi̇zhan Murathan Jan 2016

Anti-Invariant Riemannian Submersions From Kenmotsu Manifolds Onto Riemannian Manifolds, Ayşe Beri̇, İrem Küpeli̇ Erken, Cengi̇zhan Murathan

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

The purpose of this paper is to study anti-invariant Riemannian submersions from Kenmotsu manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. Several fundamental results in this respect are proved. The integrability of the distributions and the geometry of foliations are investigated. We proved the nonexistence of (anti-invariant) Riemannian submersions from Kenmotsu manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds such that the characteristic vector field $\xi $ is a vertical vector field. We gave a method to get horizontally conformal submersion examples from warped product manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. Furthermore, we presented an example of anti-invariant Riemannian submersions in the case where the characteristic vector field $\xi $ …
