Metabolomics Of Mammalian And Cellular Models Of Aging, Nathan Gonzales Duval Jan 2016

Metabolomics Of Mammalian And Cellular Models Of Aging, Nathan Gonzales Duval

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging is often associated with impaired cognition and a progressive loss of organ function over time accompanied by an increased susceptibility for many disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), heart disease, osteoporosis, type II diabetes, and many forms of cancer. With a rapidly aging population, the negative impacts of aging and age-related disorders is a major cause of increased human suffering both for affected individuals and for families and caregivers. Metabolic changes are also apparent in normal aging, but may increase in magnitude or nature with accompanying disease states or with accelerated aging. Thus, studying aging in a …

A Meta-Analysis Of Research-Based Reading Interventions With English Language Learners, Maritza Torres Jan 2016

A Meta-Analysis Of Research-Based Reading Interventions With English Language Learners, Maritza Torres

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Response to Intervention (RTI) model, introduced as part of the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2004, is a proactive process of early interventions and evidence-based instruction for all students. RTI has additional intensive and individualized interventions to prevent student underachievement, including students at risk for academic failure and culturally and linguistically diverse students (Vellutino et al., 1996; Donovan & Cross, 2002; Francis, Rivera, Lesaux, Kieffer, & Rivera, 2006; Fuchs & Fuchs, 2006; Vellutino, Scanlon, Small, & Fanuele, 2006; Al Otaiba et al., 2009). Klingner and Edwards (2006) suggest that the needs of culturally and linguistically …

Implementation Of An Air Supply Unit Control Scheme For The Uc2av (Unmanned Circulation Control Aerial Vehicle), Cameron Rosen Jan 2016

Implementation Of An Air Supply Unit Control Scheme For The Uc2av (Unmanned Circulation Control Aerial Vehicle), Cameron Rosen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The expanded prevalence of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in recent years has created many opportunities to research novel applications for their use, enabled by the reduced cost, mission flexibility, and reduced risk that small-scale unmanned platforms provide in comparison to larger aircraft. Despite the versatility of unmanned aviation, limitations on payload size and weight, fuel and power capacity, and takeoff and landing infrastructure can restrict UAV applications, and have created a need for lift augmenting technologies that can reduce the impact of these limitations. Circulation Control (CC) is an active flow technique that has been proven as a method for …

Systematic Errors In Intro Lab Video Analysis, John Zwart, Kayt E. Frisch, Tim Martin Jan 2016

Systematic Errors In Intro Lab Video Analysis, John Zwart, Kayt E. Frisch, Tim Martin

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

In video analysis lab experiments, students frequently find large discrepancies between results based on self-filmed videos and expected values (e.g. for g determined by a fit to projectile motion data). These differences are frequently far larger than the uncertainty calculated from their fit. Using an inexpensive point-and-shoot camera with a 4x optical zoom to record video, we investigated two possible causes of this error: the effect of placing the reference meter stick at a different object-to-camera distance and the effect of the motion of interest being in a plane not perpendicular to the camera lens. When we observed these phenomena …

Changing The Scholarly Sources Landscape With Geomorphology Undergraduate Students, Heidi Blackburn, Ashlee L.D. Dere

Criss Library Faculty Publications

Science is a core discipline in academia yet the focus of most undergraduate technical writing is generally on the data and results, not the literature review. The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) librarian and a new geology professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) collaborated to develop an information literacy session for students in a geomorphology class. Here we outline the background of the campus STEM initiatives and the assignment as well as the library instruction activity, learning outcomes, and assessment components. The activity improved student use of scholarly sources and we provide suggested activity modifications for …

Associative Data Analytics And Its Application To Protein Crystallization Analysis, Imren Dinc Jan 2016

Associative Data Analytics And Its Application To Protein Crystallization Analysis, Imren Dinc

Dissertations

Data analytics focuses on processing raw data to extract important information and involves data acquisition, data analysis, and visualization. To maximize the amount of information obtained, an efficient experimental design method is necessary. Many existing experimental design methods do not consider the previous experimental results when constructing new trial conditions. It is quite difficult to employ supervision in this domain due to limited data size and skewed data distribution. Once the data is collected, proper analysis methods should be developed for making useful decisions regarding the type of data collected (e.g., numerical, time, visual, image analysis). Visualization that encompasses both …

Certifiable Higher Order Sliding Mode Control Practical Stability Margins Approach, Chandrasekhara Bharath Panathula Jan 2016

Certifiable Higher Order Sliding Mode Control Practical Stability Margins Approach, Chandrasekhara Bharath Panathula

Dissertations

The Higher Order Sliding Mode (HOSM) controllers are well known for their robustness/insensitivity to bounded perturbations and for handling any given arbitrary relative degree system. The HOSM controller is to be certified for robustness to unmodeled dynamics, before deploying the controller for practical applications. Phase Margin (PM) and Gain Margin (GM) are the classical characteristics used in linear systems to quantify the linear controller robustness to unmodeled dynamics, and certain values of these margins are required to certify the controller. These conventional margins (PM and GM) are extended to Practical Stability Phase Margin (PSPM) and Practical Stability Gain Margin (PSGM) …

Nonbinary Coded-Higher Order Modulation In Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling, Asma Ahmad Alqudah Jan 2016

Nonbinary Coded-Higher Order Modulation In Faster-Than-Nyquist Signaling, Asma Ahmad Alqudah

Dissertations

Fast and reliable data transmission together with high bandwidth efficiency are among the main design aspects in a modern digital communication system. There are many options available to meet these requirements, but the approach adopted in this dissertation is the nonorthogonal transmission scheme, faster-than-Nyquist (FTN). In FTN, the data bits are transmitted at a rate higher that that allowed by Nyquist criterion. This transmission occurs while keeping a fixed power spectral density (PSD) of the system. This technique was proposed by Mazo in 1975, and since then has been extended in many directions. Considering the bandwidth-efficiency as a key factor, …

Predictive Simulation Of Gas Adsorption In Fixed-Beds And Limitations Due To The Ill-Posed Danckwerts Boundary Condition, James Clinton Knox Jan 2016

Predictive Simulation Of Gas Adsorption In Fixed-Beds And Limitations Due To The Ill-Posed Danckwerts Boundary Condition, James Clinton Knox

Dissertations

The 1-D axially dispersed plug flow model is a mathematical model widely used for the simulation of adsorption processes. Lumped mass transfer coefficients such as the Glueckauf linear driving force (LDF) term and the axial dispersion coefficient are generally obtained by fitting simulation results to the experimental breakthrough test data. An approach is introduced where these parameters, along with the only free parameter in the energy balance equations, are individually fit to specific test data that isolates the appropriate physics. It is shown that with this approach this model provides excellent simulation results for the CO2 on zeolite 5A sorbent/sorbate …

Robust Support Media For High Throughput Chromatographic Separations, Javier Sanchez Santiago Jan 2016

Robust Support Media For High Throughput Chromatographic Separations, Javier Sanchez Santiago

Dissertations

Affinity chromatography is used to separate biomolecules based on highly specific interactions, such as receptor and ligand, enzyme and substrate or antigen and antibody. Traditional chromatographic separation systems have the disadvantages of low flowrates, high pressure drop across the column, low capacity and poor reusability. Ceramic monoliths have been previously used as active support for affinity chromatographic columns due to their compact geometry and outstanding mechanical properties. In addition, mathematical models have been developed in order to determine the adsorption and elution times depending on the monolith geometry. The reversible interaction between L-asparagine and L-asparaginase has been exploited, using a …

Trace Fossils From The Shawangunk Formation In The Hudson Valley Indicate An Estuarine Depositional Environment, Howard R. Feldman, Alex Bartholemew, Carlton E. Brett, Matthew B. Vrazo, Marcelo Rosensaft

Lander College for Women - The Anna Ruth and Mark Hasten School Publications and Research

The Middle Silurian Shawangunk Formation crops out in the lower Hudson Valley and extends toward the southwest into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It reaches a maximum thickness around Guymard (1,400 ft.; 400m) and gradually thins toward the northeast, pinching out near Binnewater, New York. The formation consists of gray conglomerate, quartz arenite, and minor shale. Worm burrows, Arthrophycus, Skolithos, Planolites?, and a bilobed resting trace have been found at different stratigraphic horizons in the Shawangunk Formation. All traces are associated with a finer, sandy matrix and/or hematite-rich interval rather than a coarse, pebbly quartz sandstone lithology dominant in the bulk …

Stabilization Of Compressor Surge Using Gain-Scheduled Controller, Zaid A. Alsayouri Jan 2016

Stabilization Of Compressor Surge Using Gain-Scheduled Controller, Zaid A. Alsayouri

Master's Theses and Capstones

Gain scheduling is a control method that is used in nonlinear systems to optimize their controlled performance and robustness over a wide range of operating conditions. It is one of the most commonly used controller design approaches for nonlinear systems. In this control technique, the controller consists of a collection of linear controllers, each of which provides satisfactory closed-loop stability and performance for a small operating region, and combined they guarantee the stability of the system along the entire operating range. The operating region of the system is determined by a scheduling signal, also known as the scheduling variable, which …

An Investigation Into The Accessibility Of Ap Calculus, Brian Austin Dodge

Capstones, Research Projects, and Curricula

This is a mixed methods ethnographic study conducted to determine what obstacles students face when approaching AP Calculus. I focused my study on home economics, peer pressure, ELL status and home support. Overall, I found that being a student who is ELL (hereafter defined as a student who was or currently is required to take ACCESS testing) had the most negative effect of the previously listed factors. Home economics and peer pressure were inconclusive or often had no effect. Finally, having a supportive home life in the form of parents who value education, encourage goal-setting, and set high expectations had …
