Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of substrates on the magnetic and transport properties of Ni2Mn1.5In0.5 ultra-thin films were studied theoretically and experimentally. High quality 8-nm films were grown by laser-assisted molecular beam epitaxy deposition. Magneto-transport measurements revealed that the films undergo electronic structure transformation similar to those of bulk materials at the martensitic transformation. The temperature of the transformation depends strongly on lattice parameters of the substrate. To explain this behavior, we performed DFT calculations on the system and found that different substrates change the relative stability of the ferromagnetic (FM) austenite and ferrimagnetic (FiM) martensite states. We conclude that the energy difference …

Do We Choose What We Desire? – Persuading Citizens To Make Consistent And Sustainable Mobility Decisions, Christopher Lisson, Margeret A. Hall Jan 2016

Do We Choose What We Desire? – Persuading Citizens To Make Consistent And Sustainable Mobility Decisions, Christopher Lisson, Margeret A. Hall

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

A dilemma in urban mobility with tremendous effects on citizens’ wellbeing is the unconscious antipode between their short- and long-term goals. People do not anticipate all consequences of their modal choices and thus make decisions that might be incoherent with their desires, e.g. taking their own car due to convenience but causing a congested city. Omnipresent Information Systems on smartphones provide the necessary information and coordination capabilities to support people for sustainable and individually coherent mobility decisions on a mass scale. Building upon extant work in travel behavior and social psychology, a framework is proposed to coordinate research efforts in …

In The Wild Residual Data Research And Privacy, William Bradley Glisson, Tim Storer, Andrew Blyth, George Grispos, Matt Campbell

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

As the world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, researchers in both industry and academia endeavor to understand how technology is used, the impact it has on everyday life, the artifact life-cycle and overall integrations of digital information. In doing so, researchers are increasingly gathering ‘real- world’ or ‘in-the-wild’ residual data, obtained from a variety of sources, without the explicit consent of the original owners. This data gathering raises significant concerns regarding privacy, ethics and legislation, as well as practical considerations concerning investigator training, data storage, overall security and data disposal. This research surveys recent studies of residual data gathered in-the-wild …

Enhancing Silicon Solar Cell Efficiency With Double Layer Antireflection Coating, Mohamed Medhat, El-Sayed El-Zaiat, Samy Farag, Gamal Youssef, Reda Alkhadry

Turkish Journal of Physics

Antireflection coating on silicon, a high refractive index substrate, was theoretically investigated. The effects of antireflection coating on electrical parameters such as the short circuit current, open circuit voltage, maximum current density, maximum voltage, maximum power, power density, and conversion efficiency of the solar cell were simulated. Various previous works in which solar cell efficiencies were investigated after applying double layer antireflection coating (DLARC) were reviewed. Ti$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and MgF$_{2}$ were then applied in a DLARC design, taking into consideration the refractive index dispersion of the two materials. The results were compared with other works in the solar spectral range (400-1200 …

Effects Of Variable Viscosity And Thermal Conductivity On Magnetohydrodynamic Free Convection Flow Of A Micropolar Fluid Past A Stretching Plate Through Porous Medium With Radiation, Heat Generation, And Joule Dissipation, Gopal Chandra Hazarika, Bandita Phukan

Turkish Journal of Physics

The effects of temperature-dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity on free convection magnetohydrodynamic flow of an optically thin gray, viscous, and incompressible micropolar fluid and heat transfer past a stretching plate through porous medium in the presence of radiation, heat generation, and Joule dissipation were studied. The fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity were assumed to vary as inverse linear functions of temperature. Using similarity transformation, the governing partial differential equations of motion were reduced to ordinary ones, which were solved numerically for prescribed boundary conditions using the shooting method. Numerical results for the velocity, angular velocity, and temperature profiles are shown …

Are American Universities Mismanaged?: Tenure Vs Non-Tenure Faculty Employment Decisions, G. Thomas Sav Jan 2016

Are American Universities Mismanaged?: Tenure Vs Non-Tenure Faculty Employment Decisions, G. Thomas Sav

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper empirically tests the extent to which public universities in the United States are potentially mismanaged. The focus rests with university managerial employment decisions regarding the continuing substitution of less costly non-tenure track teaching faculty for tenured and tenure track faculty and the extent to which those decisions affect student graduation success. Panel data covering ten academic years, 2004-05 through 2013-14 are employed using ordinary least squares and stochastic frontier analysis specifications. The latter provides tests of the inefficiency effects of managerial employment decisions and academic year estimates of technical efficiency. In both cases, the results provide statistically strong …

The Contributions Of Body Awareness To “Choking Under Pressure”, Wagner Larson, Cody Larson Jan 2016

The Contributions Of Body Awareness To “Choking Under Pressure”, Wagner Larson, Cody Larson

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Choking under pressure” is a well-known phenomenon and occurs when performance is negatively affected because of perceived pressure. Many researchers have studied this topic, mainly verifying the key theories involved: the explicit monitoring theory and distraction theory. The current study adds to the literature by measuring the contributions of body-awareness to choking under pressure. There has been previous research on the concept of overthinking body movements that supports the hypothesis of the more self-aware an individual is of their body, the more they are subject to choking in a pressure induced situation. The current study aims to expand this idea …

Winter Conditions Influence Biological Responses Of Migrating Hummingbirds, Catherine H. Graham, Sarah R. Supp, Donald R. Powers, Pieter Beck, Marisa C. W. Lim, Anusha Shankar, Scott Goetz, Susan M. Wethington Jan 2016

Winter Conditions Influence Biological Responses Of Migrating Hummingbirds, Catherine H. Graham, Sarah R. Supp, Donald R. Powers, Pieter Beck, Marisa C. W. Lim, Anusha Shankar, Scott Goetz, Susan M. Wethington

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Conserving biological diversity given ongoing environmental changes requires the knowledge of how organisms respond biologically to these changes; however, we rarely have this information. This data deficiency can be addressed with coordinated monitoring programs that provide field data across temporal and spatial scales and with process-based models, which provide a method for predicting how species, in particular migrating species that face different conditions across their range, will respond to climate change. We evaluate whether environmental conditions in the wintering grounds of broad-tailed hummingbirds influence physiological and behavioral attributes of their migration. To quantify winter ground conditions, we used operative temperature …

Detection Of Electrical Alternans In Ventricular Depolarization Phase Of Human Electrocardiogram, David R. Wasemiller Jan 2016

Detection Of Electrical Alternans In Ventricular Depolarization Phase Of Human Electrocardiogram, David R. Wasemiller

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

T-wave Alternans (TWA) in an electrocardiogram (ECG) has received considerable interest as a potential predictor of sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, large clinical trials have shown that while TWA has a very high negative predictive value, its positive predictive value is poor. Results of previous studies suggest that arrhythmia onset can be affected by the phase relationship of alternans of the depolarization and repolarization phase of the action potentials of the ventricles. To assess this relationship, one would first need to establish that depolarization alternans can be detected and then develop methods to determine its relationship with repolarization alternans, which …

Use Of Laboratory Geophysical And Geotechnical Investigation Methods To Characterize Gypsum Rich Soils, Raghava A. Bhamidipati Jan 2016

Use Of Laboratory Geophysical And Geotechnical Investigation Methods To Characterize Gypsum Rich Soils, Raghava A. Bhamidipati

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Gypsum rich soils are found in many parts of the world, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Most gypsum occurs in the form of evaporites, which are minerals that precipitate out of water due to a high rate of evaporation and a high mineral concentration. Gypsum rich soils make good foundation material under dry conditions but pose major engineering hazards when exposed to water. Gypsum acts as a weak cementing material and has a moderate solubility of about 2.5 g/liter. The dissolution of gypsum causes the soils to undergo unpredictable collapse settlement leading to severe structural damages. The damages incur …

Study Of Macroturbulence And Bursting Via The -1 Spectral Power Law Region Of Turbulent Open Channel Flows Over Gravel Beds, Amirreza Ghasemi Jan 2016

Study Of Macroturbulence And Bursting Via The -1 Spectral Power Law Region Of Turbulent Open Channel Flows Over Gravel Beds, Amirreza Ghasemi

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

The large scale and smaller production scale motions contain over the half of turbulent kinetic energy in the flow. These motions are responsible for sediment transport and deposition processes, contaminant mixing and stream bio-diversity. These motions are corresponded to the left and right bounds of -1 power region of the spectral energy. The most well recognized and highly studied power law has been upon Kolmogorov’s -5/3 power law region of the streamwise spectral energy density and this research focused on investigating the -1 power region bounds and energy. Energy budget and time-average turbulence calculations along with spectral analysis …
