Using Blogs In A Heritage Russian Classroom, Julia Titus
Using Blogs In A Heritage Russian Classroom, Julia Titus
Russian Language Journal
Over the recent years blogging has become an increasingly frequent component in an academic setting, making appearances anywhere from English writing courses to foreign language classes. Research assessing the usefulness of blogs as a learning tool (Warschauer 2010; Murray, Hourigan, and Jeanneau 2007; Lee 2011; Bloch 2007) confirms that the blog format may offer many unique advantages, such as giving the learner a central role in the learning process; allowing the learner to practice writing on topics important to the him or her and fostering self-expression; creating meaningful and authentic context; extending learning beyond the classroom; developing self-reflection; viewing writing …
On The Expressive Function Of Russian Quantitative Aktionsarten In Speech, Elena Nikolaenko
On The Expressive Function Of Russian Quantitative Aktionsarten In Speech, Elena Nikolaenko
Russian Language Journal
The goal of this article is to examine the expressive function of Russian quantitative Aktionsarten in oral and written speech from the perspective of functional grammar and cognitive linguistics, the theoretical principles of which are outlined below. The focus will be on occasionally used Aktionsarten, which name an action quantity as “greater than the norm”; the term is used by native Russian speakers to express personal appreciation/depreciation of the action.

Review: How Russian Came To Be The Way It Is. A Student Guide To The History Of The Russian Language; Studies In Accentology And Slavic Linguistics In Honor Of Ronald F. Feldstein, Ljiljana Durašković
Russian Language Journal
Tore Nesset is professor of Russian Linguistics at Arctic University of Norway. As many other professors, he has frequently found himself in situations where the simple conjugation of a verb like писать ‘write’ (1) triggered many questions from his Russian class. It is in practice impossible “to travel through time/centuries” every time a new exceptional form is introduced or mentioned in the setting of a language class. How Russian Came to Be the Way It Is is designed to make Russian more accessible to students by shedding light on Russian linguistic changes over its history.

Review: Studies In Accentology And Slavic Linguistics In Honor Of Ronald F. Feldstein; Exploring The Us Language Flagship Program: Professional Competence In A Second Language By Graduations, Ljiljana Durašković, Grant H. Lundberg
Russian Language Journal
As the title states, this volume was compiled in honor of the work and influence of Ronald F. Feldstein on the fields of accentology and Slavic linguistics. Though Professor Feldstein did some work in most of the areas covered in the volume, the book is unified by the ideas of the Prague Linguistic Circle and Jakobsonian structuralism, of which Feldstein was an important representative for many Slavic linguists working today.

Discourse Analysis, Brent C. Talbot
Discourse Analysis, Brent C. Talbot
Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications
This chapter (a) presents discourse analysis as both epistemology and methodology; (b) suggests a sociolinguistic toolkit that could be used as one type of approach to conducting discourse analysis; (c) reviews and points to literature in music education and music therapy that have used such epistemological and methodological tools; and (d) suggests that, by engaging with discourse analysis, we can begin to ask questions about participants and their interactions within environments where music therapists operate and analyze prevailing discourses within structures and systems of music therapy. Experiments In Idiom Recognition, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman
Experiments In Idiom Recognition, Jing Peng, Anna Feldman
Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Some expressions can be ambiguous between idiomatic and literal interpretations depending on the context they occur in, e.g., sales hit the roof vs. hit the roof of the car. We present a novel method of classifying whether a given instance is literal or idiomatic, focusing on verb-noun constructions. We report state-of-the-art results on this task using an approach based on the hypothesis that the distributions of the contexts of the idiomatic phrases will be different from the contexts of the literal usages. We measure contexts by using projections of the words into vector space. For comparison, we implement Fazly et …
Resolving Dissonance : How Experiences Of Flow Of Live Music Performance Facilitate Dedifferentiation And Impact The Subject Well-Being Of Young Adults, Amanda N. Sposato
Resolving Dissonance : How Experiences Of Flow Of Live Music Performance Facilitate Dedifferentiation And Impact The Subject Well-Being Of Young Adults, Amanda N. Sposato
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This mixed methods study sought to explore how experiencing a state of flow, or optimal enjoyment, while performing live music impacted the subjective well-being of young adults. Live music performance serves as a space of transgressive eroticism, which is necessary to facilitate dedifferentiation, an intrapsychic state developmental and relational state of merger where new ego growth occurs.
67 young adults (18-35 years of age) who had performed live music in the past year completed an anonymous online survey consisting of an empirical assessment of the convergence of flow and well-being utilizing the Flow State Scale (Jackson & Marsh, 1996), Scale …

Tango: A Spanish-Based Programming Language, Ashley Zegiestowsky
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The purpose of this thesis is a two-part project. The first part of the project deals with the creation of my own Spanish-based programming language, Tango, using Spanish key words (instead of English key words). The second part of the project relates to the design and implementation of a compiler that follows the grammar rules outlined in the Tango language in order to successfully lexically analyze, parse, semantically analyze, and generate code for Tango. The structure of this thesis begins with a description of the specific goals achieved in the Tango language, an explanation and brief examples of the Tango …
The Link Between American Deaf Culture And Dance: Assessing Nonverbal Communication And Recognizing The Value Of Deaf Dancers., Chloe Edelstein
The Link Between American Deaf Culture And Dance: Assessing Nonverbal Communication And Recognizing The Value Of Deaf Dancers., Chloe Edelstein
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
As a dancer, it is of the utmost importance to know the history behind the origins of movement with intent. In a collegiate setting, we are immersed in the different styles and origins that have shaped the refinement and adaptations of dance into the genres that it exists today. But, I have recognized a lack of knowledge in one extraordinary facet; dance performed by those who are deaf. With this project, I have educated a group of dancers on the different aspects and struggles of being deaf within America and through the creation of a dance that mimics the rehearsal …
Effects Of Familiarity And Presentation Mode On Auditory-Visual Speech Recognition In Adults With Aphasia, Rachel Hahn
Effects Of Familiarity And Presentation Mode On Auditory-Visual Speech Recognition In Adults With Aphasia, Rachel Hahn
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Aphasia is a language disorder that has been acquired by about 2 million Americans, most commonly from stroke or traumatic brain injury. Research demonstrates that adults with aphasia can continue improving their speech and language for years after their stroke with therapy, which is contrary to traditional thought. Therefore, people with aphasia and their loved ones are searching for ways to continue speech and language improvements even after insurance runs out, and many are turning to technological therapy programs. However, there is little research on the skills people with aphasia need to benefit from these technological therapy programs. The current …
Movement And Music: Exploring The Relationship Between Movement And Dance, Savannah Dunn
Movement And Music: Exploring The Relationship Between Movement And Dance, Savannah Dunn
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis will examine the goals of dance performance, the craft behind choreographic art, and their respective relationships to music. As it would be impossible to rewrite the discourse and philosophy of dance or reach any concrete conclusions in that regard, I merely aim to present some of the primary theories surrounding this topic and discuss the roles they took on in the dance I created as part of this project, titled Ash Fighting Balance. I worked with a composer, Harriet Steinke, over the course of the 2015-2016 school year to choreograph a dance in three parts. I conscientiously pursued …

From Hallaj To Heer: Poetic Knowledge And The Muslim Tradition, Nosheen Ali
From Hallaj To Heer: Poetic Knowledge And The Muslim Tradition, Nosheen Ali
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
How do we comprehend the poetic universe of Muslim South Asia, and why is it important to do so? This is the larger question — at once historical, sociological, literary, and political — which forms the heart of the inquiry in this paper. In my attempt to address this question, I attend particularly to the themes of language, time, love, spiritual subjectivity, key figures, and resistance in understanding the place of the poetic in Muslim tradition. I then offer glimpses of the Seraiki poetic landscape from southern Punjab in Pakistan, to illuminate the continued power and politics of poetic practice …

Beyond Transparency: The Semantics Of Rulemaking For An Open Internet, Reza Rajabiun
Beyond Transparency: The Semantics Of Rulemaking For An Open Internet, Reza Rajabiun
Indiana Law Journal
In trying to promote the development of an open Internet, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has primarily tried to encourage network providers to be transparent about their traffic management practices and quality of service prioritization policies. Dominant network operators have successfully challenged this minimalist approach to addressing end-user concerns about the rise of a two-tiered Internet, motivating the FCC to engage in yet another public consultation process to assess its future approach to the problem. This article maps the debate using Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools that allow us to build a systematic picture of the positions of the …
Truth And Legitimacy (In Courts), Kenneth S. Klein
Truth And Legitimacy (In Courts), Kenneth S. Klein
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
This Article seeks to comprehensively articulate the meaning, role, and importance of truth in courts by drawing upon empirical and theoretical scholarship from philosophy, economics, social science, psychology, political science, ethics, and jurisprudence, in addition to more traditional legal sources such as United States Supreme Court decisions. It is frequently said that trials are a search for truth. But as insiders to the judicial system know, if this is so, then it is a meaning of truth that differs from what truth means in any other context. And exposing this definitional dissonance, in turn exposes that the legitimacy of the …
Rethinking The Phosita In Patent Litigation, Greg Reilly
Rethinking The Phosita In Patent Litigation, Greg Reilly
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
This Article was prepared for the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal’s Symposium “Decisions, Decisions: Exploring Factors that Affect the Judicial Decision-Making Process.” It questions the trend in Supreme Court cases and academic commentary toward greater reliance in patent litigation on the hypothetical “person having ordinary skill in the art” (“PHOSITA”)—essentially a person of average abilities in the technical field of the invention. This trend reflects a desire to approach as closely as possible the first-best outcome of accuracy to the technical merits of patent disputes. But this first-best outcome is impossible given the constraints imposed by lay decision makers. Long-standing …
The Final Step To Insider Trading Reform: Answering The "It's Just Not Right!" Objection, John P. Anderson
The Final Step To Insider Trading Reform: Answering The "It's Just Not Right!" Objection, John P. Anderson
Journal Articles
This Article proceeds as follows: Section I sets the table by dismissing the notion that economic analysis of law should enjoy some privileged status (as more precise, rigorous, or scientific) over ethical analysis of law. Rather, it is suggested that economic and ethical reasons are best understood as different tools suited for different roles in legal reform. It is then argued that, given the current climate, ethical reasoning is the best tool for overcoming the remaining obstacles to insider trading reform in the United States. Section II begins the ethical analysis by arguing that even if it were admitted that …
Answering For His Order: Alma's Clash With The Nehors, Matthew Scott Stenson
Answering For His Order: Alma's Clash With The Nehors, Matthew Scott Stenson
BYU Studies
From the beginning, Lehite culture was richly oral and often divided over the question of authority (see Alma 1–2, 8–14, 30). On one side of the conflict stood the prophets, and on the other side stood “popular” opportunistic figures, wise in their own eyes, who resemble in a general way classical sophists (Alma 1:3; see 2 Ne. 9:28). The classical sophists, some of whom were philosophic pretenders, sought to subvert on occasion the moral authority and epistemological methods of the actual philosophers. In contrast, the Nephite “sophists” (an encompassing term for our purposes that describes a certain kind of proud, …

"To Dress It And To Keep It": Toward A Mormon Theology Of Work, Walker A. Wright
BYU Studies
In the controversial film Monty Python’s Life of Brian, the protagonist, Brian, finds himself in the market square while being pursued by Roman centurions. In the speakers’ corner of the market, three different prophets are shown attempting to gain an audience with tales of Armageddon. One dust-covered wild man shrieks about “the beast . . . huge and black, and the eyes thereof red with the blood of living creatures, and the whore of Babylon shall ride forth on a three-headed serpent.” Next to him, garbed in red, a more refined preacher boldly pronounces that “the demon shall bear a …
