Making Space For Queer Narratives: Feminist Art, And Animation, Davin Aberle Jan 2016

Making Space For Queer Narratives: Feminist Art, And Animation, Davin Aberle

Theses & ETDs

Popular art and media is too often focused on cisgender, white, straight people’s experiences, pushing people of color and LGBTQ people to the sidelines. In marginalizing these people in the media, TV shows are only helping to perpetuate the social marginalization and injustices faced by both the LGBTQ community and people of color in the US; and in these representations there are few positive traits for marginalized youth to look to. Looking to my own life as a trans person I try to bring a realistic depiction through my animations. Guided by contemporary intersectional feminist theories, this project works to …

Nature From A Distance: Western Conceptions Of The Environment Through The Context Of Postmodern Pastoral Poetry, Corey Culbertson Jan 2016

Nature From A Distance: Western Conceptions Of The Environment Through The Context Of Postmodern Pastoral Poetry, Corey Culbertson

Theses & ETDs

Contemporary ecological thinking and ecocriticism disrupts traditional aestheticized ideas of nature, introducing new perspectives on pastoral. When the contemporary moment and pastoral reconvene, pastoral responds to the real destruction of our world’s environmental spaces due to global climate change and the shrinking signifier nature. As Greg Garrard writes, “It may be that one contemporary pastoral refuge lies within the discourse of ecology itself” (63). When thinkers such as Timothy Morton examine who and what “nature” is for, they perform a task not too dissimilar from pastoral’s conventional applications. Beginning with Virgil’s Eclogues, Chapter One investigates historical definitions of pastoral and …

“Foreign In A Domestic Sense”: An Examination Of Changes And Continuities In Factors Shaping Puerto Rican Emigration To The U.S. Mainland, Gerina Gjergji Jan 2016

“Foreign In A Domestic Sense”: An Examination Of Changes And Continuities In Factors Shaping Puerto Rican Emigration To The U.S. Mainland, Gerina Gjergji

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines emigration from Puerto Rico to the mainland U.S. with the aim of uncovering the factors that account for the large exodus of people from 1898 to present. A review of how major theories of migration have developed over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries suggests several potential explanatory factors. The case analysis is based on the study of Puerto Rican economic and political history, which shapes the socio-economic conditions that drive migration. After a review of earlier waves of migration, the analysis focuses in more depth on the current cycle of migration. An appraisal of migratory movements, government …

Belief, Construction, And Language: Philosophical Lenses On Issues Of Understanding And Cognition In Mathematics, Bradley Thomas Baker Jan 2016

Belief, Construction, And Language: Philosophical Lenses On Issues Of Understanding And Cognition In Mathematics, Bradley Thomas Baker

Theses & ETDs

This thesis takes two issues which crop up in mathematics in general, but which are specifically invoked through examples drawing on mathematical pedagogy. Chapter one focuses on the problem of what it means to understand mathematics, and what it means to have different levels or kinds of understanding. Chapter two then takes up a similar question regarding mathematical cognition, focusing on what sense can be made of different kinds of mathematical cognition from a philosophical standpoint. More specifically, this thesis takes up three thinkers who represent two opposing ontological camps in the philosophy of mathematics. For each thinker, the goal …

“It Looks Like You Who Are Behind A Fence:” Exceptional Landscapes Of American Incarceration From Deer Island To Topaz, Michael Dorney Jan 2016

“It Looks Like You Who Are Behind A Fence:” Exceptional Landscapes Of American Incarceration From Deer Island To Topaz, Michael Dorney

Theses & ETDs

This senior thesis attempts to tell a spatial history of Japanese American Internment (1942-46), a historical episode that saw the United States federal government expropriate, incarcerate, and forcefully migrate 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. My first chapter situates the “Internment Camps” (as they are referred to in the majority of Internment historiography), within a longer history of expropriation, incarceration and forced migration, reaching as far back as British colonial Massachusetts and the Deer Island “Internment Camp” (1675-76). This chapter is designed to give the reader a deeper appreciation for the historical breadth of this distinct chapter in the …

East Vs. West – Developmentally Early Differences In Attention, Megumi Kuwabara, Linda B. Smith Jan 2016

East Vs. West – Developmentally Early Differences In Attention, Megumi Kuwabara, Linda B. Smith

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Growing evidence indicates a suite of generalized differences in the attentional and cognitive processes of adults from Eastern and Western cultures (Nisbett, 2003). Cognition in Eastern adults is characterized as more relational and in Western adults as more object focused (Nisbett & Miyamoto, 2005). This chapter will present evidence on the early emergence of these differences in preschoolers from Japan and the U.S. and will also present initial findings on transmission of these cultural differences being very early.

Reasons For The Deteriorating Relationship Between The Local People Of Mumbai And The Bihari Migrants, Jyoti Verma Jan 2016

Reasons For The Deteriorating Relationship Between The Local People Of Mumbai And The Bihari Migrants, Jyoti Verma

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The paper deals with the ‘reasons’ behind the deteriorating relationship between the Bihari migrants and the local people of Mumbai from a larger project on the topic. The main sample comprised of 307 people (152 Bihari migrants and 155 local people of Mumbai). Additionally, 50 respondents participated into 8 focus group discussions and 17 were interviewed. Both the qualitative and quantitative methods were used for data collection. Two similar, but not identical versions of the main questionnaire were developed, one for each group whose Part III addressed the ‘reasons’ issue. Qualitative data were generated with the help of an open-ended …

Sacred Currency: The Value Of Textile In Colonial Andean Painting, Gaby Greenlee Jan 2016

Sacred Currency: The Value Of Textile In Colonial Andean Painting, Gaby Greenlee

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In this 18th century colonial Andean image painted in the former Inka capital of Cuzco, Peru, a wreath of flowers encircles a small female figure sitting upon a richly textured seat (Figure 1). She wears clothing that connotes distinction; her features and gestures are as delicate as her garments yet her eyes are fixed and discerning. Our eyes are drawn to her eyes. What does she see? What is her role? We also turn these questions on ourselves: what do we know about this figure that gives the painting meaning? We tend to interpret the work through her identity.

However, …

Mexican Ikat And Transatlantic Trade, Alejandro B. De Avila Jan 2016

Mexican Ikat And Transatlantic Trade, Alejandro B. De Avila

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The earliest text known so far in the Americas was engraved on a potsherd found in Chiapa de Corzo in southern Mexico that has been dated to around 300 years before our era. The script appears to represent a language in the Mixe-Zoquean family (which developed historically along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec), and it has been proposed that the inscription on the clay reads as follows: “The pleated cloth got dyed. The thing that is made of pleated cloth has been cut.”1 If this interpretation holds true, the text must refer to a textile that was patterned by means of …

Transnational Influences On Louisiana Samplers: Traditions, Teachers, Techniques, And Text, Lynne Anderson Jan 2016

Transnational Influences On Louisiana Samplers: Traditions, Teachers, Techniques, And Text, Lynne Anderson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Louisiana’s early history is colored with multinational interests and domination by a succession of nations speaking diverse languages. Although “discovered” by the Spanish in the 1600s, the French were the first to colonize the area, founding New Orleans in 1718 with financial support (and administrative control) from the Company of the Indies. New Orleans became Louisiana’s colonial capital in 1721. Most of the earliest immigrants to Louisiana were either French military personnel or French Canadian adventurers and traders. Their number was augmented by the forced immigration of criminals, prostitutes, and those incarcerated in French workhouses. By all accounts this made …

Approaching A Listening And Speaking Skills Gap For Some Learners In The Adult Ell Classroom, Johanna K. Steinruieck Jan 2016

Approaching A Listening And Speaking Skills Gap For Some Learners In The Adult Ell Classroom, Johanna K. Steinruieck

Theses and Graduate Projects

Some adult English language learners (AELLs) have weak English listening and speaking skills in relation to their reading and writing literacy skills. Little information about this discrepancy is available to teachers of AELLs. The purpose of this project was to learn what research exists on the topic and find hands-on strategies to address it in the AELL classroom. Methods included an extended literature review and a survey of AELL teachers in two upper-Midwest urban Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs. Studies of college and university students who are learners of English as a second language (ESL), show that listening and speaking …

English Language Learners And Using Technology In The Classroom For Language Arts And Reading Instruction, Lindsay Block

Theses and Graduate Projects

This paper focuses on using technology with English language learners (ELLs), specifically in grades 4-8. Research supports that there are many benefits to using technology with ELLs in the general education classroom. The technology resources that this paper focuses on blogs, WebQuests, handheld devices, and websites. One hundred and nine teachers participated in the study by completing a survey. The survey results indicate that teachers have technology available, but that many do not know how to use it with ELLs. The author provides resources, including a manual and a website, for those teachers to use with their ELLs. The author …

Female Perceptions Of Islam In Today’S Morocco, Fatima Sadiqi Jan 2016

Female Perceptions Of Islam In Today’S Morocco, Fatima Sadiqi

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

This paper is based on a survey, 25 interviews, and observation. According to the results so far, Islam means three things for women in today’s Morocco: faith, culture, and politics. Islam as faith is generally perceived as a personal relationship with God. Such a relationship is seen as both rewarding and empowering, but also private. Women who perceive Islam as faith observe the Islamic rituals and may or may not wear the veil. Women’s perception of Islam as faith is a rather poorly understood topic in research in a heavily space-based patriarchy, probably because of its intimate relationship with the …

The Sophist In The Cave: Education Through Names In Plato's Republic, Daniel Propson Jan 2016

The Sophist In The Cave: Education Through Names In Plato's Republic, Daniel Propson

Wayne State University Dissertations

The Cratylus is often considered an isolated dialogue in Plato’s corpus, and the major theses of the Cratylus are often seen as disposable and problematic elements in Platonic thought. When one carefully compares this dialogue, however, to Plato’s comments elsewhere about rhetoric and dialectic, a set of fascinating connections emerge. In this dissertation, I argue that the Republic ought to be read in light of the Cratylus. In the former dialogue, Plato is vitally concerned with the use of accurate language in his republic, a fact most clearly brought out by his accusation against demagogues: that they “give names” to …

Using The Variationist Comparative Method To Examine The Role Of Language Contact In Synthetic And Periphrastic Verbs In Spanish, Jenny Dumont, Damián Vegara Wilson Jan 2016

Using The Variationist Comparative Method To Examine The Role Of Language Contact In Synthetic And Periphrastic Verbs In Spanish, Jenny Dumont, Damián Vegara Wilson

Spanish Faculty Publications

Language contact and linguistic change are thought to go hand in hand (e.g. Silva-Corvalán 1994), however there are methodological obstacles, such as collecting data at different points in time or the availability of monolingual data for comparison, that make claims about language change tenuous. The present study draws on two different corpora of spoken Spanish — bilingual New Mexican Spanish and monolingual Ecuadorian Spanish — in order to quantitatively assess the convergence hypothesis in which contact with English has produced a change to the Spanish verbal system, as reflected in an extension of the Present and Past Progressive forms at …

An Ethnographic Investigation Of The Maternity Healthcare Experience Of Immigrants In Rural And Urban Alberta, Canada., Gina M. Higginbottom, Jalal Safipour, Sophie Yohani, Beverly O’Brien, Zubia Mumtaz, Patricia Paton, Yvonne Chiu, Rubina Barolia

School of Nursing & Midwifery

BACKGROUND:

Canada is among the top immigrant-receiving nations in the world. Immigrant populations may face structural and individual barriers in the access to and navigation of healthcare services in a new country. The aims of the study were to (1) generate new understanding of the processes that perpetuate immigrant disadvantages in maternity healthcare, and (2) devise potential interventions that might improve maternity experiences and outcomes for immigrant women in Canada.

METHODS:

The study utilized a qualitative research approach that focused on ethnographic research design and data analysis contextualized within theories of organizational behaviour and critical realism. Data were collected over …

Effectiveness Of Group Interventions For Depressed Iranian Migrants In Austria, Atefeh Fathi, Walter Renner, Barbara Juen Jan 2016

Effectiveness Of Group Interventions For Depressed Iranian Migrants In Austria, Atefeh Fathi, Walter Renner, Barbara Juen

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Effectiveness of Group based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was investigated in a sample of 23 Iranian migrants living in Austria for an average 14 years and suffering from Major Depressive Disorder. The participants were randomized to: (1) individual CBT, (2) group based CBT and (3) wait-list control groups. Although the results showed a significant decrease in depression symptoms, no significant group differences were observed. The findings from this study suggest that the effectiveness of group based CBT may be influenced by Iranian socio-cultural characteristics.

Representing Human Cultural And Biological Diversity In Neuropsychiatry: Why And How, Daina Crafa, Saskia K. Nagel Jan 2016

Representing Human Cultural And Biological Diversity In Neuropsychiatry: Why And How, Daina Crafa, Saskia K. Nagel

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Over the past decade, findings from cultural neuroscience have demonstrated that functional neural processes vary significantly across populations. These findings add a new dimension to the well-established literature describing cultural differences in human behavior. Although these findings are informative for understanding complex relationships between social and neurobiological processes, they also have significant implications for psychiatric research. Neuropsychiatry already co-considers the relationship between brain and social world; however, its research findings notoriously underrepresent diverse cultural, ethnic, and gender groups. Considering that psychiatric patients across cultures exhibit different behavioral presentations and symptom distributions, they may exhibit equally different functional neural processes as …

Caron, Carter, And Bedford At The Supreme Court Of Canada: Society Can Change But History Will Always Stay The Same, Nicolas M. Rouleau Jan 2016

Caron, Carter, And Bedford At The Supreme Court Of Canada: Society Can Change But History Will Always Stay The Same, Nicolas M. Rouleau

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Good facts make good law. And at the Supreme Court of Canada, good social and legislative facts can change the law. Between December 2013 and November 2015, the Supreme Court released Bedford, Carter, and Caron, three decisions that ruled on the same three constitutional issues the Court had ruled on 20 to 30 years earlier. In the Prostitution Reference, Rodriguez, and Mercure, the “first versions” of each case, the Court had refused to find in favour of the claimants. Neither the factual records nor the interpretation of the relevant provisions allowed the Court to establish the existence of their constitutional …

Beyond Gatekeeping: The Normative Responsibility Of Internet Intermediaries, Marcelo Thompson Jan 2016

Beyond Gatekeeping: The Normative Responsibility Of Internet Intermediaries, Marcelo Thompson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article puts forward a normative approach to the responsibility of Internet intermediaries for third-party content they host. It argues that, in thinking about intermediary liability, the focus should be on intermediaries' responsibility towards the reasoning processes in reaching decisions, rather than on the outcomes of intermediaries' decisions. What is necessary is a framework that, while attaching responsibilities to such decisions, creates a cushioning system for their decision making, mitigating the hardship of honest mistakes. Within this framework, intermediaries must be seen not as mere keepers of gates, but as designers of artifacts whose use plans settle normative questions and …

Aprender Com / Learning With: Collaborative Learning In A Portuguese Heritage Language Community, Simone Gugliotta Jan 2016

Aprender Com / Learning With: Collaborative Learning In A Portuguese Heritage Language Community, Simone Gugliotta

Spanish and Portuguese: Faculty Publications

Language attrition, the switch to a dominant language and the loss of proficiency in the original language, are problems confronted by some families in the United States who speak heritage languages at home. This article is about the conviviality and outcomes of a Portuguese-speaking community. The main goal of the project was to create an environment where ideas and techniques are negotiated to help children and parents maintain language and culture. Drawing on Vygotsky’s scaffolded participation, the article also describes how children, parents, a college student, and a researcher co-construct language learning with song and other playful activities to foster …
