Between Coloniality And Transmodernity:Latino/A Fictional Responses To U.S. Interventionism In Latin America, Dolly Reina Tittle
Between Coloniality And Transmodernity:Latino/A Fictional Responses To U.S. Interventionism In Latin America, Dolly Reina Tittle
Wayne State University Dissertations
Abstract: This work focuses on four novels: The Americano (1963) by Enrique G. Matta, América’s Dream (1996) by Esmeralda Santiago, Caramelo or Puro Cuento: A novel (2002) by Sandra Cisneros, and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007) by Junot Díaz. These novels share a history of U.S. interventionism, which has not only affected the inhabitants of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, still a colony of the U.S., but also the lives of their population that now reside in the U.S. mainland. As Latino Studies Scholar Juan Flores has explained, many Latinos/as in the U.S. “migrated here …

Reimaginando A Bolívar En La Cultura Latinoamericana, Eglee Teresa Rodriguez-Bravo
Wayne State University Dissertations
Since the nineteenth century, the phenomenon of nation-building in Venezuelan society has focused on finding a figure such as Simón Bolívar, who could represent the birth of the nation and the liberal values that the Creole society–Creole refers to people of European stock born in the Spanish colonies–embraced after succeeding in the Emancipation movements. Simón Bolívar plays a central role in the construction of Venezuelan national identity, as well as that of Colombia and other Andean nations. Venezuelan society–the masses and the elite–is devoted to Bolívar’s cult. However, in the 1960s historical practice evolved from “great men” stories to what …
Parenting Stress In Immigrant Families Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Comparison With Families From The Host Culture, M Millau, M Rivard, C Mercier, C Mello
Parenting Stress In Immigrant Families Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Comparison With Families From The Host Culture, M Millau, M Rivard, C Mercier, C Mello
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Immigrant families of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) face significant challenges in accessing and using rehabilitation services appropriate for their child’s disorder. Compared to families native to their host country, the stress experienced by these families in relation to their child’s condition may be magnified by their immigrant status. This study compared self-reported parenting stress levels among 24 mothers and 17 fathers who had immigrated to Canada to income-matched, Canadian-born parents. Overall, Canadian-born parents tended to report higher stress levels than immigrant parents, but this may be primarily due to the high stress levels among Canadian-born fathers relative to …

The Racism, Acceptance, And Cultural-Ethnocentrism Scale (Races): Measuring Racism In Australia, Kaine Grigg, Lenore Manderson
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
No existing scale has been designed for, and validated in, the Australian context which can objectively evaluate the levels of general racist attitudes in Australian individuals or groups. Existing Australian measures of racist attitudes focus on single groups or have not been validated across the lifespan. Without suitable instruments, racism reduction programs implemented in Australia cannot be appropriately evaluated and so cannot be judged to be making a meaningful difference to the attitudes of the participants. To address the need for a general measure of racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious acceptance, an Australian scale was developed and validated for use …

The Material Atlantic: Clothing, Commerce, And Colonization In The Atlantic World, 1650-1800, Robert S. Duplessis
History Faculty Works
In this wide-ranging account, Robert DuPlessis examines globally sourced textiles that by dramatically altering consumer behaviour, helped create new economies and societies in the early modern world. This deeply researched history of cloth and clothing offers new insights into trade patterns, consumer demand and sartorial cultures that emerged across the Atlantic world between the mid-seventeenth and late-eighteenth centuries. As a result of European settlement and the construction of commercial networks stretching across much of the planet, men and women across a wide spectrum of ethnicities, social standings and occupations fashioned their garments from materials old and new, familiar and strange, …
Civil Discourse And Religion In Transitional Democracies: The Cases Of Lithuania, Peru, And Indonesia, David Ingram
Civil Discourse And Religion In Transitional Democracies: The Cases Of Lithuania, Peru, And Indonesia, David Ingram
Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Respect for human dignity and the common good in democratic regimes cannot be sustained by reason alone. Citizen faith commitments endorsing both of these values are necessary. However, negotiating in practice the relationship between civic values and religious morality is extremely challenging in a democracy. As a contribution to greater balance in these matters, Ingram argues that the capacity of religion to promote democratic reform in a way that respects fair procedures (rule of law) must extend beyond the liberal principle of tolerance. It must extend to recognizing the republican principle of non-domination. Ingram provides a thorough comparative analysis of …

Adolescent Literacy And Collaborative Inquiry, Rob Simon, Amir Kalan
English Faculty Publications
In a teacher education classroom in Toronto, groups of middle school students, teacher candidates, and university researchers, members of our research collaborative, the Teaching to Learn Project (Simon et al., 2014; Simon & the Teaching to Learn Project, 2014), discuss projects developed from curricula they coauthored for Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus: A Survivor’s Tale (1986). Maus documents Spiegelman’s father’s recollections of the Holocaust and the author’s own struggles to come to terms with what it means to be the child of a Holocaust survivor.
Youth and teachers involved in the Teaching to Learn Project collectively worked through what historian …
The Upper Peninsula As It Was: What The Europeans Encountered, Robert Archibald
The Upper Peninsula As It Was: What The Europeans Encountered, Robert Archibald
Upper Country: A Journal of the Lake Superior Region
This essay establishes a baseline for measuring environmental change caused by the influx of Europeans beginning in the seventeenth century. In it the author describes the natural forces including volcanism, sedimentation, geologic metamorphism, and glaciation as natural forces that shaped the landscape of the Upper Peninsula and created deposits of minerals. He uses survey notes, travel accounts and journals to describe flora and fauna prior to large-scale commercial exploitation

Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine Domjan Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin
Creating A Common Trajectory: Shared Decision Making And Distributed Cognition In Medical Consultations, Katherine Domjan Lippa, Valerie L. Shalin
Psychology Faculty Publications
The growing literature on shared decision making and patient centered care emphasizes the patient’s role in clinical care, but research on clinical reasoning almost exclusively addresses physician cognition. In this article, we suggest clinical cognition is distributed between physicians and patients and assess how distributed clinical cognition functions during interactions between medical professionals and patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). A combination of cognitive task analysis and discourse analysis reveals the distribution of clinical reasoning between 24 patients and 3 medical professionals engaged in MS management. Findings suggest that cognition was distributed between patients and physicians in all major tasks except …

Navigating The Decision Space: Shared Medical Decision Making As Distributed Cognition, Katherine D. Lippa, Markus Alexander Feufel, F. Eric Robinson, Valerie L. Shalin
Psychology Faculty Publications
Despite increasing prominence, little is known about the cognitive processes underlying shared decision making. To investigate these processes, we conceptualize shared decision making as a form of distributed cognition. We introduce a Decision Space Model to identify physical and social influences on decision making. Using field observations and interviews, we demonstrate that patients and physicians in both acute and chronic care consider these influences when identifying the need for a decision, searching for decision parameters, making actionable decisions Based on the distribution of access to information and actions, we then identify four related patterns: physician dominated; physician-defined, patient-made; patient-defined, physician-made; …
Soundings And Silences, Laurence H. Tribe
Soundings And Silences, Laurence H. Tribe
Michigan Law Review Online
My work over the years has included both studying existing constitutions, particularly that of the United States, and assisting others with the drafting of new constitutions—from the Marshall Islands to the Czech Republic to South Africa. Among the things I noticed was that those undertakings, although distinct, were related—and related most significantly in the way that formative decisions about what to say and what not to say in a new constitution have bearing on later decisions about how to interpret what a constitution says or fails to say. My decision to pay special attention to the various roles of silence …

Grammar Agreements: Crafting A More Finely Tuned Approach To Corrective Feedback, Ryan P. Shepherd, Katherine Daily O'Meara, Sarah Elizabeth Snyder
Journal of Response to Writing
This article introduces the idea of grammar agreements as a way to offer a more “finely tuned approach” to grammar feedback in the L2 classroom (Ferris, Liu, Sinha, & Senna, p. 307). These agreements offer students options for how the teacher will respond to writing done in their first-year composition classes. The authors offer suggestions for both why grammar agreements are a useful tool in the L2 writing classroom (and possibly beyond) and how to implement grammar agreements effectively.

Christian Supersessionism And The Dilemma Of Dialogue In Jos Nigeria: Exploring Panikkar’S Dialogical Dialogue As A Paradigm For Interreligious Dialogue, Martin Ahiaba
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Middle-belt and Northern Nigeria are notoriously known as the epicenter for ethnic and religious warfare. The hostility between the two dominant religions—Islam and Christianity—has a beginning that pre-dates the British colonial occupation in 1903. Islamic opposition to British cultural imperialism and religious superiority continues in its outright rejection of Christian supersessionism and the formation of fundamentalist sects. Though not denying the importance of addressing the economic, ethnic, and political context of the problem of violence, this work focuses on exclusivist Christology and its hermeneutical use in framing the dialogue between Christians and Muslims in Jos Plateau.
We analyze the …
The Natural Embroidery Of Thomas Southerne's Oroonoko, Sarah Rose Hancock
The Natural Embroidery Of Thomas Southerne's Oroonoko, Sarah Rose Hancock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I plan to investigate the role of the landscape in Thomas Southerne's play Oroonoko. Most scholarship on Oroonoko focuses on the relationship between Southerthne's play and Aphra Behn's novella of the same name. In particular, the scholarly conversation has focused on the way that Southerne white-washed Aphra Behn's character Imoininda. While this distinction is notable, my research, instead, will focus on the way these bodies—both white and black, colonizer and colonized—are framed by 18th century gardening rhetoric. This rhetoric provided naturally conceived tools for nurturing these bodies. I plan to argue that the language of the natural …
Religious Law And Women's Human Rights: Reflections Upon The African Human Rights System, Julia L. Ernst
Religious Law And Women's Human Rights: Reflections Upon The African Human Rights System, Julia L. Ernst
UC Law SF International Law Review
In many countries, governments have permitted the application of religious laws and have delegated judicial authority to religious courts. These practices may violate women's human rights for at least four reasons. First, women are barred from leadership positions within many religious institutions, and are therefore prevented from helping interpret the religious precepts and develop the law that is being applied by the religious courts. This exclusion of women violates their right to participate in governance, democracy, and decision-making, which are essential components of law-making. Second, women are excluded from serving as judges on religious courts, thereby calling into question the …

Converting Heterogeneous Statistical Tables On The Web To Searchable Databases, David W. Embley, Mukkai Krishnamoorthy, George Nagy, Sharad C. Seth

Much of the world’s quantitative data resides in scattered web tables. For a meaningful role in Big Data analytics, the facts reported in these tables must be brought into a uniform framework. Based on a formalization of header-indexed tables, we proffer an algorithmic solution to end-to-end table processing for a large class of human-readable tables. The proposed algorithms transform header-indexed tables to a category table format that maps easily to a variety of industry-standard data stores for query processing. The algorithms segment table regions based on the unique indexing of the data region by header paths, classify table cells, and …
Trust As A Virtue In Education, L D'Olimpio
Trust As A Virtue In Education, L D'Olimpio
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
As social and political beings, we are able to flourish only if we collaborate with others. Trust, understood as a virtue, incorporates appropriate rational emotional dispositions such as compassion as well as action that is contextual, situated in a time and place. We judge responses as appropriate and characters as trustworthy or untrustworthy based on these factors (namely context, intention, action as well as consequence). To be considered worthy of trust, as an individual or an institution, one must do the right thing at the right time for the right reasons, and the action should have its intended effect. By …

Bothered Bloggings And Troubled Tweets: Constructions Of Stress And Concerns For Early-Career Academics, R Busch, M Ledingham
Arts Conference Papers
While recent studies suggest that stress is becoming more prominent for academics, very little research has been conducted on understanding the realities of stress for early-career academics. Through the employment of social constructionist epistemology and theory as a framework for research, our study examines how early-career academics language and construct experiences of stress and concern. We employed a constructionist thematic analysis. This involved selecting a sample of blogs and Twitter microblogs to code and identifying important themes, in relation to stress and concern. Through a preliminary analysis of blogs, we found that there were recurring concerns on work-life balance, a …

Note, The Role Of Nonverbal Persuasion In Juror Decision-Making And The Need To Regulate The Trial Consulting Industry, Jaclyn M. D'Esposito
Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy
This Note agrees that the trial consulting industry merits regulation, it departs from the literature inasmuch as it argues that the profession should be regulated with respect to its influence on juror decision-making, as opposed to trial consultants' professional and ethical obligations. To that end, Part II seeks to establish the persuasive effect of nonverbal communication and provides a brief history of the trial consulting industry. Part III continues with an examination into the relevant law with respect to nonverbal communication and trial consulting. In particular, Part III.A.1 considers the various ways in which the law recognizes the role of …
