Faces Of Appalachia: Arab And Muslim Americans Contribution The Welfare Of The Citizens In Region, Majed J. Khader

ASA Annual Conference

Published literature (mainly WV periodicals) reveals that Arab and Muslim Americans have been residing and contributing to the wellness and improvement of the life of the citizens in this part of Appalachian region for more than a century from the writing of this research project. Early immigrants landed and resided in the Appalachian region as early as the 1900s. More precise, several of these pioneer immigrants chose to reside and work in southern West Virginia including the cities and the surrounding vicinities of Huntington, Charleston, Beckley, and Logan. Waves of immigrants since then and until current days continue to arrive, …

Bodies In Conflict: From Gettysburg To Iraq, Laura E. Bergin

Schmucker Art Catalogs

The exhibition Bodies in Conflict: From Gettysburg to Iraq not only conveys an ambitious geographic and historical range, but also reflects the sensitivity, ambition, and thoughtfulness of its curator, Laura Bergin ’17. In examining how the human figure is represented in prints and photographs of modern war and political conflict, Laura considers how journalistic photographs, artistic interpretations, and other visual documentation of conflict and its aftermath compare between wars and across historical periods. Specific objects include a print and photographs from the Civil War, propaganda posters from World Wars I and II, photographs and a protest poster from the Vietnam …

Peaceful Coexistence Between Muslims And Christians In Baitul Maqdis Between 1897-1994: Manifestations, Effects And Challenges / Ibrahim Saqer Ismail Alzaeem, Ismail Alzaeem Ibrahim Saqer

Student Works (2010-2019)

Muslim-Christian coexistence in the city of Bait Al-Maqdis is a sophisticated phenomenon that is worth a careful study in order to extract the benefits of this experience which can be realized by revealing the reasons and impacts on the city of Bait Al-Maqdis and its people, to be a role model across nations, cultures and religions. This study, then, analyses the harmonic coexistence, its features, effectiveness and challenges, between Muslims and Christians in the City of Bait Al-Maqdis between (1897-1994) aiming to investigate the extent of the importance of the City of Bait Al-Maqdis to both Muslims and Christians. Is Faith Truly The Reason For Our Security? A Study On The Extent To Which Islam Influences Jordanian National Security, Shynelle Kissi Oct 2016

Is Faith Truly The Reason For Our Security? A Study On The Extent To Which Islam Influences Jordanian National Security, Shynelle Kissi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

After witnessing years of coups, war, and overall civil unrest in the Middle East, it comes as no surprise that there are many competing explanations for why this is. Much to the disbelief of the researcher, the average American’s theory for this was that the heavy influence of Islamic teachings in lawmaking prevented the successful implementation of democratic processes and overall peace in the region. However, Jordan appears to have evaded all forms of chaos, and remain peaceful despite also being a Muslim country. Why? Has Jordan escaped turmoil because unlike its neighbors it does not use Islam in its …

Human rights have been taught in Morocco for twenty years. Since the process of Moroccan transitional justice, the aim of this human rights education has been to promote a national human rights culture. This research is a cross-comparison between how human rights education; for the purpose of creating a human rights aware society, is presented and enacted by the the Moroccan government and how it is presented and enacted by non-governmental bodies in a post transitional justice moment of history. The study was conducted through a qualitative data method. It includes interviews with the Inter-Ministerial Delegation of Human Rights and …

Are Christian College Students Equipped To Share Their Faith With Their Muslim Friends?: A Plan Of Action, Tim Orr

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

According to Pew Research Center, the U.S. Muslim population will double by 2030. Training the church to reach this group of people is vital. This project proposes that the Christian college is the best resource to train students to reach their Muslim friends and neighbors for Christ because these institutions have at their disposal a rich reservoir of resources that are vital to providing the biblical, theological, missiological, sociological, and cross-cultural knowledge that is necessary to be effective witnesses for Christ. The project also identifies four important components to successful ministry to Muslims. The four components include spiritual vitality, cultural …

An Islamic Party In Urban Local Politics: The Pks Candidacy At The 2012 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election, Syahrul Hidayat

Jurnal Politik

Despite its success in obtaining more votes in the 2004 general election in Jakarta than the previous election in 1999, the Partai Keadilan Sejahtera (PKS) has turn its voter sup¬port into local executive power by winning a gubernatorial election in the capital. After a narrow defeat in the 2007 local election, the party’s candidate who had a respectable reputation also failed to further its bid for the second round of the following local elec¬tion. By applying the existing possible explanations of urban candidacy in local elec¬tions, this paper aims at discussing the possible explanations for the failure of Hidayat Nur …

Perspectives On Iraq's Past, Present, And Future In The Works Of Muhammad Baqir Al-Sadr And Yusuf Salman Yusuf, Amnah Almukhtar Sep 2016

Perspectives On Iraq's Past, Present, And Future In The Works Of Muhammad Baqir Al-Sadr And Yusuf Salman Yusuf, Amnah Almukhtar

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Through a look at the writings of Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr and Yusuf Salman Yusuf, I argue that Iraq’s communists and Islamists during the middle of the twentieth century could not escape a common language, common circumstances and conditions which framed their conceptions of the relationship between their pasts, presents, and futures. Their political visions did not come from their disparate traditions, although couched in those terms, but from their common circumstances and struggles towards the establishment of a sovereign, independent Iraqi nation. Despite their disagreements or variously framed answers, they were guided by similar questions. Yusuf Salman Yusuf, also known …

Refractions Through The Secular: Islam, Human Rights And Universality, Zara Khan Sep 2016

Refractions Through The Secular: Islam, Human Rights And Universality, Zara Khan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Universal human rights (HR) are often theorized as philosophically neutral. Because they do not espouse any particular theory of the human being, it is argued, they can be reasonably appropriated by all. In this thesis, I explore HR’s universality claim, by focusing on the discourse’s secular foundation. In the universal human right to freedom of religion, I find a distinctly modern grammar of ‘religion,’ one that separates ‘religion’ from politics and power, law from morality, and the public and private realms. The modern concept of religion also espouses a secular theory of the human, insofar as the human is defined …

Engagement And Resistance: African Americans, Saudi Arabia And Islamic Transnationalisms, 1975 To 2000, Jeffrey Diamant

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Since the 1960s, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has financed missionary efforts to Muslims around the world, attempting to spread a Salafi form of Islam that professes strict adherence to Islamic sacred scripture. The effects of this transnational proselytization have depended on numerous factors in “host countries.” This project explores the various impacts of Saudi transnational religious influence in the United States among African-Americans. By relying on previously unused documentary sources and fresh oral histories, it shows how Saudi “soft power” attempted to effect change in religious practices of African-American Muslims from 1975 through 2000. It provides the most detailed …

Crossing Paths: Musical And Ritual Interactivity Between The Ḥamadsha And Gnawa In Sidi Ali, Morocco, Christopher J. Witulski

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The processions occurring in Moroccan pilgrimages--such as those in Sidi Ali, a small town situated in the mountains outside of Meknes and Fez--are important sites that instigate an aesthetic negotiation within nearby possession ceremonies. The many musical groups that punctuate the cacophonous atmosphere during the annual pilgrimage are affiliated with a many of the country’s diverse mystical brotherhoods, including the gnawa, ḥamadsha, and ʿīsāwa. Through a detailed ethnographic description of processions and rituals from two of these groups, this article outlines ways in which musical tastes flow between the different events, informing the aesthetics of both outdoor …

The Apocalypse Of Pseudo-Ezra: Syriac Edition, English Translation, And Introduction, Laura Locke Estes Sep 2016

The Apocalypse Of Pseudo-Ezra: Syriac Edition, English Translation, And Introduction, Laura Locke Estes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The text that this thesis examines is most commonly referred to by modern scholars as the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Ezra (Ps.-Ezra). It is a historical apocalyptic text that claims authorship by the biblical character Ezra, but there is no question that it is the pseudonymous product of a much later Syriac-speaking Christian author who writes in response to the Arab conquests and subsequent consolidation of Arab political and religious dominance under the caliphate. Ps.-Ezra is a brief work, but an enigmatic one, and has received only scant scholarly attention. Although nineteenth- century translations based on three individual manuscripts were made into …

The Afghan Juvenile Code of 2005 is compared with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child’s four key guidelines. The four guidelines include: (1) imprisonment of juveniles “shall be used only as a measure of last resort”; (2) any such imprisonment shall be “for the shortest appropriate period of time”; (3) juveniles who are in prison shall be “separated from adults”; and (4) they shall have the right to maintain “family contact.” These guidelines serve as a medium through …

Filling The Constitutional Lacunae Concerning Islamic Banking And Finance Litigations In Nigeria: Towards National Harmony / Muhammad Bashir Alkali, Alkali Muhammad Bashir

Student Works (2010-2019)

The objectives of this thesis are to fill the gaps in the Nigerian constitution 1999 relating to Islamic Banking and Finance (IBF) Litigations, using the system as an inter-faith bridge in pluralist Nigeria as well as using Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to supplement the limited court system. The doctrinal methodology was the main method but some interviews were conducted to support it. This research found that the Constitution fell short of, among others, not providing original Jurisdiction to the Sharia Court of Appeal on matters of IBF; rather, it vested the same on the Federal High Court and appellate jurisdictions …

Concept Of God In The Discourses Of Al-Ghazālī (D. 1111) And Maimonides (D. 1204) / Nurhanisah Senin, Senin Nurhanisah

Student Works (2010-2019)

Despite the fact that Islam and Judaism are both monotheistic religions, they embrace dissimilar concepts of unity. The differences entail the emergence of theological and philosophical discourses among Muslim and Jewish scholars. Arguments on God’s unity, incorporeality and His relation to creation thus result in debates on God’s existence, attributes and actions. Hence, as part of bridging interfaith dialogue between Islam and Judaism, this study aims to provide a comparative analysis of al-Ghazālī and Maimonides, both of whom were considered the principal spokespersons in their respective religions in the 11th and 12th centuries. Historical and textual analyses along with the …

Commercialization Of Cash Waqf In Negeria: An Analysis Of Its Implementation / Yusuff Jelili Amuda, Amuda Yusuff Jelili

Student Works (2010-2019)

Cash Waqf is a viable form of Islamic endowment whose prime goal is providing relief to the less privileged citizens especially the Muslims in the society. Quite incontrovertibly, Waqf has inherent potential to ensure redistributive justice in the society given its numerous benefits. Waqf endowment provides human relief, dignity, financial support, and social needs to alleviate the struggles faced by needy Muslims such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of support. However, it is indeed ironical that despite Nigeria, an apparent Muslim dominated country, rich in both human and natural resources is still plagued by the social menace of poverty. Quite …

Muslim–Paulician Encounters And Early Islamic Anti-Christian Polemical Writings, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara

This article investigates the portrayals of the Paulicians in early Islamic sources and specifically analyses the role that Paulician religious views play in Islamic anti-Christian writings. The study also gives insights into the nature of materials that were available to Muslim scholars and the strategies they applied in constructing coherent arguments to refute certain Christian religious beliefs. In doing so, the study touches upon Muslims’ religious needs and scholarly curiosity, which sheds light on their intellectual interactions with non-Islamic religious beliefs and philosophical ideas. The article demonstrates that references to Paulician religious beliefs can be found primarily in early Christian–Islamic …

Poetics Of The Sufi Carnival: The ‘Rogue Lyrics’ (Qalandariyât) Of Sanâ’I, ‘Attâr, And ‘Erâqi, Matthew Thomas Miller

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

"The Poetics of the Sufi Carnival: The ‘Rogue Lyrics’ (Qalandariyât) of Sanâ’i, ‘Attâr, and ‘Erâqi" is the first detailed study of the poetics and cultural politics of the “rogue lyrics” (qalandariyât) of medieval Persian Sufi literature. Countering approaches that either reduce this carnivalesque poetry to an abstract symbolist poetics or sublimated aesthetic expression of Sufi antinomianism, the present study analyzes (1) the historical development of this countergenre, (2) the myriad ways in which its heterotopic poetics creates—indeed, performs—meaning, and (3) the cultural politics of its (typically) same-sex beloved.Chapter one and two position the qalandariyât within the broader historical development of …

The Making Of Modern Egypt: The Egyptian Ulama As Custodians Of Change And Guardians Of Muslim Culture, Marai Boauod Aug 2016

The Making Of Modern Egypt: The Egyptian Ulama As Custodians Of Change And Guardians Of Muslim Culture, Marai Boauod

Dissertations and Theses

Scholarship on the modern history of the Middle East has undergone profound revision in the previous three decades or so. Many earlier perceptions, largely based on modernization theory, have been either contested or modified. However, the perception of the Egyptian ulama (the traditionally-educated, religious Muslim scholars) in academic scholarship remains largely affected by the legacy of hypotheses of the modernization theory. Old assumptions that the Egyptian ulama were submissive to political power and passive players incapable of accommodating, let alone of fathoming, conditions of the modern world, and who chose or were forced to retreat from this world, losing much, …
