Framing Feminine Identity: Exploring Ways Of Being A Woman, Through The Practice Of Faith, And Ideas Of Equality And Justice Through Narratives Of South African Muslim Women Activists, Rachel Anderson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

What began as an attempt to explore Islamic Feminism through the life narratives of Muslim women, actually enabled a journey into exploring ways of being a woman, through the practice of faith, and ideas of justice and equality. Through multiple in-depth interviews and conversations, a visit to the mosque for Friday prayer, and a night at a theatrical production in the Muslim community, I spent time with influential Muslim women activists in the Durban community of South Africa listening, learning and reflecting.

What I found was less concrete than labeling these women as ‘Islamic Feminists’ but it was also more …

Psalms, Islam, And Music: Dialogues And Divergence About David In Christian-Muslim Encounters Of The Seventeenth Century, David R. M. Irving

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

David (Daud) is revered in the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam variously as a king, prophet, and musician, providing the inspiration for what can be called the “Davidic tradition,” expressed in text, sound, ideology, and image. The scriptures associated with David are central to this tradition: within Judaism and Christianity they are the Psalms, human praises or entreaties to God; within Islam, the Zabūr is revered as a divine prophecy revealed to the prophet Daud, according to the Qurʾān. David’s musicianship and the identity of his instruments are understood differently in Jewish-Christian and Islamic traditions, and are interpreted …

Pilgrimage, Spiritual Tourism And The Shaping Of Transnational ‘Imagined Communities’: The Case Of The Tidjani Ziyara To Fez, Johara Berriane

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This paper aims at analysing the role of the transnational Tidjani pilgrimage to Fez in shaping a sense of belonging among West African adepts and their identification with Morocco. It is based on the assumption that the Tidjani pilgrimage has contributed to the shaping of a religious ‘imagined community’ (Anderson, 1996) encompassing West Africa and Morocco and to the reinforcement of the position of Fez as its ‘socio-cultural centre’ (Cohen, 1992). This paper explores the different historical and political factors that contributed to the evolution and maintaining of the Tidjani pilgrimage practice and to giving sense to it, and analyses …

Dilemma Of Applying Islamic Sharia’A Through Takhayur And Talfiq Principles In The Modern Egyptian Legal System, Aly Abdulrahman Ahmed Feb 2016

Dilemma Of Applying Islamic Sharia’A Through Takhayur And Talfiq Principles In The Modern Egyptian Legal System, Aly Abdulrahman Ahmed

Theses and Dissertations

For many Egyptians, the only path to modernity in the Egyptian legal system is believed to be through utilizing Islamic sharia’a. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Egyptian legal elite worked to introduce a modern interpretation and application of Islamic sharia’a. The Islamic principles takhayur and talfiq were used to do this. While the main usage of takhayur and talfiq was to legitimize the modern legal system by maintaining the usage of Islamic sharia’a, the legal practice reached a contradictory outcome. The Courts have been unable to decide on the exact relationship between Islamic sharia’a and other legal texts. …

International school children can also perform in English or their own native languages but much of the Turkish media attention is given to the school children/performers that learn Turkish. Also important at the Turkish Olympics – while the majority of performers are international non-Turkish children …

Radicalization Of Zaydi Reform Attempts, Maysaa Shuja Al Deen Feb 2016

Radicalization Of Zaydi Reform Attempts, Maysaa Shuja Al Deen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is studying the development of the Zaydi doctrine in order to understand the reasons of emerging the Zaydi radical group, the Houthis. The studies about Zaydism are few, since it is a doctrine that only exists in Yemen, so it is considered a doctrine of a minor group. The studies about the contemporary Zaydism are much fewer, which leads to misunderstand the Houthi phenomenon. Zaydism has a long history in Yemen and the Zaydi Imamate controlled Yemen or the northern parts of Yemen for hundreds years. Therefore, the overthrow of the Imamate in 1962 and the establishment of …

Maqasid Al-Shari'a: A Tool Of Mediation In The Politics Of The Egyptian Supreme Constitutional Court, Reem Shehab Khalil

Theses and Dissertations

Maqasid al-Shari’a is a term that is widely used nowadays in the field of Islamic law. However, since the beginning of the 1990s, the Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) of Egypt, in its interpretation of Article 2 of the Egyptian Constitution, started endorsing the maqasid as a framework through which it conceptualizes the application of Islamic law. Also, with Islamists and religious figures using the maqasid as a framework to use reason and adopt the traditional Islamic jurisprudence to the modern contexts, it is essential to trace how the classical theory of maqasid was developed and what are the constituents of …

Ethnography On The Return Of Professional Egyptian Female Migrants From The Gulf Cooperation Council, Nerida Mackey

International labor migration is one of Egypt’s economic development strategies, averaging an estimated twenty-two billion dollars in remittances in recent years, according to Egypt Daily News (Al-Aees, 2015). Although the participation of Egyptians in international migration for the purpose of work has mainly been dominated by men, there is a substantial handful of Egyptian women who independently participate in these migration flows. The Feminization of migration is still an unexplored and relatively new phenomenon in Egypt. Much of the discourse on Egyptian international labor migration has focused on men. Research on the effects of the women left behind by migrant …

Who Heard What When: Learning From Radio Broadcasting Hours And Programs In Jerusalem, Andrea L. Stanton Jan 2016

Who Heard What When: Learning From Radio Broadcasting Hours And Programs In Jerusalem, Andrea L. Stanton

Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Incorporating descriptions and analyses of sound into Middle Eastern history offers a wealth of opportunity for enriching our understanding of the historical record. But sometimes we need to get back to the basics: the “five w's and one h” of sound studies, so to speak. In what follows I would like to run this simple exercise with radio in the Mandate-era Levant, in order to lay out the basic data and begin to reflect on how it might aid scholars in better understanding other aspects of life in this period. I will do this by first addressing some of these …

Philippine Muslims On Screen: From Villains To Heroes, Vivienne Angeles Jan 2016

Philippine Muslims On Screen: From Villains To Heroes, Vivienne Angeles

Journal of Religion & Film

Early portrayals of Philippine Muslims in film show them not only as a people who profess a “heathen religion” but also whose culture is dominated by notions of superiority and violence against women and non-Muslims. This presentation is largely due to the colonial legacies of Spain and the United States, whose respective occupation of the Philippines was met with resistance by Muslims. Such negative portrayals made their way into early films as indicated by Brides of Sulu (1934) and The Real Glory (1939). This paper argues that representations of Philippine Muslims in films changed over time, depending on the prevailing …

Muslim–Paulician Encounters And Early Islamic Anti-Christian Polemical Writings, Abed El-Rahman Tayyara

World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

This article investigates the portrayals of the Paulicians in early Islamic sources and specifically analyses the role that Paulician religious views play in Islamic anti-Christian writings. The study also gives insights into the nature of materials that were available to Muslim scholars and the strategies they applied in constructing coherent arguments to refute certain Christian religious beliefs. In doing so, the study touches upon Muslims’ religious needs and scholarly curiosity, which sheds light on their intellectual interactions with non-Islamic religious beliefs and philosophical ideas. The article demonstrates that references to Paulician religious beliefs can be found primarily in early Christian–Islamic …
