Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy In Multiple Sclerosis, Lauren R. Jackson Jul 2016

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy In Multiple Sclerosis, Lauren R. Jackson

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare and debilitating disease caused by the JC virus and results in demyelination of oligodendrocytes and glial cell lysis. The virus is able to cross the blood brain barrier, leading to plaque development on the brain and neurological problems. (Gorelik et al., 2011). PML develops in individuals who have an immune disorder and who have been treated with immunomodulatory medications, including patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). There is no cure for PML and 30-50% of patients who develop the disease die within the first few months of diagnosis. The JC virus is thought to …

Comparative Study For Multi-Strain Tuberculosis (Tb) Model Of Fractional Order, Nasser Hassan Sweilam, Seham Mahyoub Al−Mekhlafi Jul 2016

Comparative Study For Multi-Strain Tuberculosis (Tb) Model Of Fractional Order, Nasser Hassan Sweilam, Seham Mahyoub Al−Mekhlafi

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, we introduce the multi−strain TB model of fractional-order derivatives, which incorporates three strains: drug−sensitive, emerging multi−drug resistant(MDR) and extensively drug−resistant(XDR ). Numerical simulations for this extended fractional order model is the main aim of this work, where the adopted model is described by a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations and the fractional derivative is defined in the sense of the Grünwald−Letnikov definition. Two numerical methods are presented for this model, the standard finite difference method (SFDM) and the nonstandard finite difference method (NSFDM). Numerical comparisons between SFDM and NSFDM are presented. It is concluded that the …

Background: Scale-up of triple-drug antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Africa has transformed the context of childbearing for HIV-positive women and may impact pregnancy incidence in HIV programs.

Methods: Using observational data from 47,313 HIV-positive women enrolled at 26 HIV clinics in Kenya and Uganda between 2001 and 2009, we calculated the crude cumulative incidence of pregnancy for the pre-ART and on-ART periods. The causal effect of ART use on incident pregnancy was assessed using inverse probability weighted marginal structural models, and the relationship was further explored in multivariable Cox models.

Results: Crude cumulative pregnancy incidence at 1 year after enrollment/ART initiation …

Sequestered Alkaloid Defenses In The Dendrobatid Poison Frog Oophaga Pumilio Provide Variable Protection From Microbial Pathogens, Kyle Hovey Jul 2016

Sequestered Alkaloid Defenses In The Dendrobatid Poison Frog Oophaga Pumilio Provide Variable Protection From Microbial Pathogens, Kyle Hovey

Masters Theses

Amphibians produce the majority of their defensive chemicals, however alkaloid defenses in poison frogs are sequestered from dietary arthropods. Alkaloids function as a defense against predators, and certain types appear to inhibit microbial growth. However, alkaloid defenses vary considerably among populations of poison frogs, reflecting geographic differences in availability of dietary arthropods. Consequently, environmentally driven differences in poison frog alkaloid defenses may have significant implications regarding their protection against pathogens. While natural alkaloid mixtures in poison frogs have recently been shown to inhibit growth of non-pathogenic microbes, no studies have examined the effectiveness of alkaloids against microbes that infect frogs. …

Rapid identification of patients who are colonized with carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPO) is included in multiple national guidelines for containment of these organisms. In a multisite study, we evaluated the performance of the Cepheid Xpert Carba-R assay, a qualitative diagnostic test that was designed for the rapid detection and differentiation of the blaKPC, blaNDM, blaVIM, blaOXA-48, and blaIMP-1 genes from rectal swab specimens. A double rectal swab set was collected from 383 patients admitted at four institutions (2 in the United States, 1 in the United Kingdom, 1 in Spain). One swab was used for reference culture (MacConkey broth containing 1 …

What Motivates High School Students To Take Precautions Against The Spread Of Influenza? A Data Science Approach To Latent Modeling Of Compliance With Preventative Practice, William L. Romine, Tanvi Banerjee, William R. Folk, Lloyd H. Barrow Jul 2016

What Motivates High School Students To Take Precautions Against The Spread Of Influenza? A Data Science Approach To Latent Modeling Of Compliance With Preventative Practice, William L. Romine, Tanvi Banerjee, William R. Folk, Lloyd H. Barrow

Kno.e.sis Publications

– This study focuses on a central question: What key behavioral factors influence high school students’ compliance with preventative measures against the transmission of influenza? We use multilevel logistic regression to equate logit measures for eight precautions to students’ latent compliance levels on a common scale. Using linear regression, we explore the efficacy of knowledge of influenza, affective perceptions about influenza and its prevention, prior illness, and gender in predicting compliance. Hand washing and respiratory etiquette are the easiest precautions for students, and hand sanitizer use and keeping the hands away from the face are the most difficult. Perceptions of …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series

When our early UNM College of Nursing PhD students wrote Volumes 1-3 of this compilation a decade ago, our program was new and growing, and most of the students lived here in New Mexico or in neighboring states. Much has changed since the initial volumes emerged from our course entitled Rural and Cultural Health (Nursing 611), a graduate elective. The world has embraced enormous linkages through technology. Refugee and migration patterns the world over have more people displaced and seeking a permanent home than ever before. International, national, regional and local contexts, conflicts, politics, health-related policies, economic struggles, racial/ethnic diversity, …

Characterization Of Salmonella Isangi Possessing A Ctx-M15 Esbl Associated With An Outbreak In A Us Hospital, Geehan Suleyman, Mary Perri, Dora Vager, Linoj Samuel, Marcus J. Zervos, George Alangaden, Robert J. Tibbetts

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Articles

Over an approximately 50-day period in 2015, an outbreak of CTX-M-15 extended spectrum β-lactamase-(ESBL)-possessing Salmonella Isangi occurred among 19 adult surgical patients and one healthcare worker (HCW) at a large urban tertiary care hospital in the United States. A total of 45 S. Isangi isolates were isolated from stool (35), blood (4), urine (3), respiratory (2), and wound (1) cultures. Phenotypically, all but three isolates demonstrated resistance to ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, ceftriaxone, and cefepime, and one isolate was resistant to ertapenem. Genotypically, a single CTX-M-15 ESBL was identified in all but three isolates by real-time PCR. Interestingly, two of the CTX-M-15 …

Gray Bat Migration In Missouri, Cheyenne Leigh Gerdes Jul 2016

Gray Bat Migration In Missouri, Cheyenne Leigh Gerdes

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Migration is an important and understudied aspect of the life histories of many species, particularly bats. Migration impacts conservation efforts, including efforts to manage the impacts of wildlife disease. The federally endangered gray bat (Myotis grisescens) is a migratory species with documented infections by Pseudogymnoascus destructans, the fungus that causes White-nose Syndrome (WNS). To better understand migration as it might relate to WNS, I quantified the timing and location of gray bat movements in Missouri using acoustic detectors and bat banding. I recorded calls at 4 maternity sites from January to May 2015, and used the R package PVAClone to …

Three-Dimensional Printing And Nanotechnology For Enhanced Implantable Materials, Karthik Kumar Tappa Jul 2016

Three-Dimensional Printing And Nanotechnology For Enhanced Implantable Materials, Karthik Kumar Tappa

Doctoral Dissertations

Orthopedic and oro-maxillofacial implants have revolutionized treatment of bone diseases and fractures. Currently available metallic implants have been in clinical use for more than 40 years and have proved medically efficacious. However, several drawbacks remain, such as excessive stiffness, accumulation of metal ions in surrounding tissue, growth restriction, required removal/revision surgery, inability to carry drugs, and susceptibility to infection. The need for additional revision surgery increases financial costs and prolongs recovery time for patients. These metallic implants are bulk manufactured and often do not meet patient's requirements. A surgeon must machine (cut, weld, trim or drill holes) them in order …

Infective Endocarditis Related To Iv Drug Abuse, Jasmine D. Branch Jul 2016

Infective Endocarditis Related To Iv Drug Abuse, Jasmine D. Branch

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Drug abuse in the United States continues to rise. In 2014, the U.S. had the highest rate of deaths due to drug overdose (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). There are several health conditions that are associated with drug abuse. Intravenous drug abuse (IVDA) is a common route used, which often works fast and causes an “immediate high”. IVDA often involves the injection of illegal drugs into an individuals veins. The needles are often shared or re-used, exposing individuals to infectious diseases. One common complication of IVDA is infective endocarditis (IE). IE can occur when bacteria enters the bloodstream …

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell Jul 2016

Coevolving Histories Inside And Out: Phylogenetics, Comparative Parasitology, And Host Affinities Of Chipmunk Sucking Lice And Pinworms, Kayce C. Bell

Biology ETDs

Diversification of parasite species, in light of their host association, is an area ripe for testing hypotheses of evolution when one species requires another for survival. The 23 species of western North American chipmunks (genus Tamias) host two species of ectoparasitic sucking lice (Anoplura) and two species of endoparasitic pinworms (Nematoda). I used a phylogenetic approach to investigate the evolutionary histories of the parasites in light of the hosts and the landscape. In comparing the parasites, I found that the two pinworm species have similar diversification patterns, linked to hosts, but those processes occurred on different time scales. As another …

Will The Ebola Epidemic Serve To Make Reform Of The Broken Health Research And Development Framework Go Viral?, Jeremy Mcdonald

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

The recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa has captured the public imagination as few other epidemics have, as its rapid spread and lethal effect demonstrated the devastating toll that infectious diseases can exact from a world unprepared to confront them. In light of the epidemic's tragic consequences, numerous experts have called for reform of the system of global health governance whose shortfalls allowed the epidemic to assume the horrifying dimensions it did. Among the many inadequacies that the outbreak uncovered is the insufficient amount of research into and development of treatments and vaccines for infectious diseases of poverty, among them …
