Chemosensitization Effect Of Sp1017 On Multiple Myeloma, Hangting Hu Dec 2016

Chemosensitization Effect Of Sp1017 On Multiple Myeloma, Hangting Hu

Theses & Dissertations

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy of plasma cells that are predominantly located in bone marrow (BM). Despite recent improvements in MM treatment by introduction of several novel agents includingimmunomodulatory drugs, proteasome inhibitors and the use of the drug combinations, MM remains incurable and almost all patients eventually relapse or become refractory to the current treatment regimens. So the current challenge of MM treatments is to maintain treatment response, prevent relapse and eventually prolong survival.

Here we demonstrated that Pluronic block copolymers ((Pluronic L61: Pluronic F127 = 1:8 w/w, SP1017) significantly increase cytotoxicity of proteasome inhibitors (Bortezomib, BTZ or …

Concerns About Justification For Fetal Genome Sequencing, Leslie Francis Dec 2016

Concerns About Justification For Fetal Genome Sequencing, Leslie Francis

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

The proposal by Chen and Wasserman (2017) contributes to a long-standing debate about the scope of prenatal screening services. With realistic prospects of fetal genome-scale sequencing from noninvasive maternal blood sampling (NIPW), their framework is timely. However, we outline a number of concerns regarding this approach, ranging from the philosophical to the social and clinical. A key concern in this literature is that the framework lacks a clear philosophical foundation. Despite the long history of prenatal diagnosis (PND), a central question remains regarding the core justification for these services.

Faculty Senate Newsletter, December 2016, Louisiana State University And Agricultural & Mechanical College

LSU Faculty Senate Publications

Message from President: Ingeniously positioned in a way that can only be accomplished through centuries of cultural evolution, Christmas occurs near the longest, darkest night of the year so as to suggest that even a small ray of light shines brightest when piercing the gloom. However severe the shortage of light around the yuletide, it never rivals the acute dimness of that social counterpart to night, blacklisting. With the advent of web sites such as Professor Watch List, an organization that stigmatizes dissenting professors and encourages students to reconnoiter them, blacklisting is much in the news these days, and rightly …

Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick Dec 2016

Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne multi-serotype disease whose dynamics are not precisely understood despite half of the world’s human population being at risk of infection. A recent dataset of dengue case reports from an isolated Amazonian city— Iquitos, Peru—provides a unique opportunity to assess dengue dynamics in a simpli- fied setting. Ten years of clinical surveillance data reveal a specific pattern: two novel serotypes, in turn, invaded and exclusively dominated incidence over several seasonal cycles, despite limited intra-annual variation in climate conditions. Together with mechanistic mathematical models, these data can provide an improved understand- ing of the nonlinear interactions between …

Patient Care Sitter Reduction And Fall Safety Improvement, Timothy J. Bock Dec 2016

Patient Care Sitter Reduction And Fall Safety Improvement, Timothy J. Bock

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The financial constraints imposed upon operational budgets by the frequent use of patient care sitters is well known among hospital leadership. Despite the high labor costs associated with direct and continuous observation, this intervention is routinely deployed by frontline care teams in an effort to preserve patients from harm, particularly from accidental falls. This reality creates an opportunity where significant budget savings can be achieved by supplanting the use of patient care sitters with more effective fall prevention strategies. This quality improvement (QI) project implemented a non-psychiatric sitter reduction and fall prevention initiative in two high volume adult acute care …

Innovation Through An Academic Practice Partnership: A New Clinical Nurse Leader (Cnl) Implementation Model, Nancy P. Taquino Dec 2016

Innovation Through An Academic Practice Partnership: A New Clinical Nurse Leader (Cnl) Implementation Model, Nancy P. Taquino

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Problem

The IOM reports (1999, 2001) were catalysts for development of a new nursing role - the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). Academic practice partnership models are needed to integrate the CNL role in health care systems.

Context

A large integrated health care system in Northern California and a university Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program initiated a formal academic practice partnership, establishing a hospital based MSN CNL program.

Intervention

A CNL implementation model was developed that includes (a) academic practice partnership advisory charter; (b) academic practice partnership roles (MSN CNL program director, MSN CNL faculty liaison, and hospital-based CNL …

Improving Employee Engagement Through The Development Of An Enterprise Performance Management System, Carlton D. Abner Dec 2016

Improving Employee Engagement Through The Development Of An Enterprise Performance Management System, Carlton D. Abner

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

There is ample evidence of our health care delivery system relying heavily on value-based outcomes. The increased focus on outcomes has required health care organizations to adjust how they approach data and how they successfully implement performance management systems. These performance management systems help the organization identify, measure, and report the organization’s performance at an enterprise level using key performance indicators clearly linked to the organization’s overall strategy. As one organization began implementing an enterprise performance management system, the goal of this project was to show how participating in projects with that level of strategic impact can lead to improved …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur Dec 2016

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Transgender populations experience disproportionate social and health disparities that can negatively impact quality of life. Healthcare barriers due to gender based discrimination and lack of medical insurance and culturally competent providers contribute to low levels of access to preventative health care screenings, resulting in sub-optimal health outcomes. The unique health circumstances of transgender individuals have been understudied in the literature. As a result clinicians are often under-informed of their specific health maintenance needs and screening guidelines. To help address this disparity, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at the University of San Francisco facilitated the collaborative assessment, development, implementation …

An Architectural Framework For Evidence-Based Practice Diffusion, Dissemination, And Institutionalization, Betty C. Lopez Dnp,Mpa,Rn,Cenp

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Technology, innovation, and a demand for the safest, value-added healthcare have led to the proliferation of research studies. Unfortunately the evidence from most of those studies has yet to be applied to evidence-based practice (EBP) projects. Much of this research and many of EBP projects remain waiting to be retrieved, analyzed, translated, and applied to everyday practice. A finding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is that it takes approximately 10 years to integrate research evidence into practice (Rogers, 2009). Recent studies recognize nurses as a vehicle to shorten the research-to-practice 10-year journey; nurses are realized as …

Nursing Student Work-Study Internship: Partnering To Bridge The Education-To-Practice Gap, Jonalyn M. Wallace Dec 2016

Nursing Student Work-Study Internship: Partnering To Bridge The Education-To-Practice Gap, Jonalyn M. Wallace

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

Discussed for decades, the need for transitional experiences bridging educational and practice settings gained momentum in the mid-1970s with the release of Kramer’s groundbreaking book Reality Shock: Why Nurses Leave Nursing. Nursing student internship programs were developed in the 1970s as one effort to address this issue. The Northern California Region of Kaiser Permanente partners with five universities to conduct the Nursing Student Work-Study Internship Program (WSP). The program provides senior level nursing students with a paid internship in clinical practice settings, working under the supervision of RN preceptors. The aim of the program is to improve the …

Development Of A Toolkit To Enhance Nursing Education Of Veteran Health Concerns, Carlee Y.S. Balzaretti Dec 2016

Development Of A Toolkit To Enhance Nursing Education Of Veteran Health Concerns, Carlee Y.S. Balzaretti

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

U.S. Veterans are a vulnerable patient population, more prone to health disparities as compared to the general population. There are 21.8 million Veterans currently in the United States, with the majority receiving their healthcare outside of the Veteran Health Administration. Veterans form a culture that is steeped in military tradition and it is essential that healthcare providers have knowledge regarding this vulnerable population to provide care that is culturally appropriate. In response to the Veteran healthcare crisis, the Department of Veteran Affairs initiated the Veteran Affairs Nursing Academy Partnership (VANAP), a joint venture between VHA medical centers and schools …

The Role Of Diaphanous In Ring Canal Development In Drosophila Melanogaster, Alexandra M. Kindred Dec 2016

The Role Of Diaphanous In Ring Canal Development In Drosophila Melanogaster, Alexandra M. Kindred

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Infertility is a widespread condition that does not always have a known cause, and for which we often do not have a cure. One potential cause of infertility is defects in gametogenesis, or the formation of sperm and egg. During gametogenesis in most organisms, the developing sperm and egg are connected to each other or to supporting cells through intercellular bridges, allowing transfer of materials between cells. Defects in these connections can lead to infertility. The developing fruit fly egg is an excellent model system to study intercellular bridges, or ring canals. Rich in f-actin and actinbinding proteins, ring canals …

Toxic Toys, Bad Vibrations, Samantha Lee Dec 2016

Toxic Toys, Bad Vibrations, Samantha Lee

Capstones

The global sex toy industry is worth a full $15 billion, and approximately half of America's adult population have previously incorporated a vibrator into sexual play. And yet, despite sex toys’ ubiquity in the boudoir, no local or federal authorities have taken on the mantle of regulating the safety of sex toys -- some of which have been reported to break during use, electrocute its user, or even leach poisonous chemicals.

In the absence of regulatory strictures, can sex educators, toy manufacturers, and adult store owners ensure adult products are safe enough for a growing customer base?

This narrative takes …

Homeless Hotels In New York: Who Benefits From The Industry’S Side Business?, Suman Bhattacharyya

Capstones

One in ten of New York City’s 60,000 homeless population lives in a commercial hotel. Commercial hotels are part of a parallel shelter system run by non-profits acting on behalf of the city’s homeless services department. The move to house homeless New Yorkers is a direct outgrowth of the city’s homeless crisis, the severity of which many say the city hasn’t seen the likes of in decades. Based on a review of publicly-available 990 filings, recent comptroller audits and interviews with key stakeholders, this study examines how the city runs the parallel commercial shelter system and which entities stand to …

Overmedicated: Foster Kids In Crisis, Mary E. Wilson

Capstones

Nearly one in four foster children across the county is taking at least one psychotropic medication-- more than four times the rate for all children.

Psychotropic drugs are chemical substances that act primarily upon the central nervous system where they alter brain function, resulting in temporary changes in perception, mood, consciousness and/or behavior.

Over the last decade the use of psychotropic medications amongst children has more than doubled. It has yet to be determined what permanent affects such drugs have on children as they age, due to a limited number of studies.

Tracing the Rise of Food Mash-ups

In 2013, Chef Dominique Ansel gave the world something it had never seen before -- the Cronut. The cross between a donut and a croissant sent shockwaves that rippled through the New York City culinary scene and through food culture across the country. People waited in line for hours and even sold their Cronuts on the black market. While the line for the dessert has simmered down in recent years, the effort to follow suit has not. Restaurateurs, fast-food establishments and food bloggers quickly made efforts to construct new dishes with strange food combinations, …

A Long And Pricey Road To Freedom For New York's Aging Prisoners, Khorri Atkinson Dec 2016

A Long And Pricey Road To Freedom For New York's Aging Prisoners, Khorri Atkinson

Capstones

This character-driven capstone examines the impact New York’s growing aging inmates – defined as those over 50 – have on the criminal justice system.

The stories of those who are in and have been through the system, suggest that reform effort is still dragging slowly. The sentencing policies and healthcare costs continue to have lasting consequences for inmates, their relatives and taxpayers. And early release programs, such as commutation, pardon and parole, also tend to shy away from people serving decades in prison for violent crimes because of the lingering tough-on-crime era.

No Place Like Home: Tenant Harassment And The Frailty Of Housing Court, Adam M. Shrier Dec 2016

No Place Like Home: Tenant Harassment And The Frailty Of Housing Court, Adam M. Shrier

Capstones

Residents across New York City—particularly those living in rent-stabilized or rent-controlled apartments—are subject to concerted, persistent harassment at the hands of landlords determined to replace them with higher-rent paying tenants or tenants who will remain compliant in response to the landlords’ negligence or illegal actions. Although tenant harassment is illegal in New York City, the laws and penalties of New York City Housing Court have proven to be an ineffective system for tenants and insufficient deterrent against landlords who stand to make significant financial gains from deregulating apartments and who often get slapped with little to no fines for their …

Migrant Surveillance: How The Federal Government Monitors Asylum Seekers, Roshan Abraham Dec 2016

Migrant Surveillance: How The Federal Government Monitors Asylum Seekers, Roshan Abraham

Capstones

The federal government has funded electronic monitoring of undocumented immigrants awaiting deportation hearings since 2005, but a spike of refugees from Central America since 2014 have lead the program to be used more and more on women with children fleeing gang violence in the Northern Triangle. The program is run by a private prison company that also handles electronic monitoring for parolees. Advocates believe this brings up ethical questions about surveillance technologies that should be addressed, but officials claim it is a cheap and more humane solution than detention.

Crossing Borders, Jarrett Lyons

Capstones

The United State Supreme Court declared the right to marry for LGBT people under “equal dignity in the eyes of the law,” on June 26th, 2015. The front pages of virtually every newspaper that day highlighted that proclamation. Exactly a week prior, another United States federal agency made an official declaration that didn’t make the front pages but also affected LGBTQ politics. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a Transgender Care Memorandum, detailing policies for treatment trans migrants in detention facilities. The facilities have a noted history of mistreatment of transgender detainees.

The Assault On Medicaid Could Endanger Millions Of Americans, Jeremy S. Smith

Capstones

Since 1965, Medicaid has been the forgotten child of the federal entitlement programs, even though it costs less and covers more people than Medicare. And in 2010, the Affordable Care Act expanded the program to give millions of more people coverage. But Republicans in Congress, and Trump, are on the precipice of radically altering the program in a way that could cost tens of millions people their health insurance.
