Technological, Policy, And Organizational Issues In The Response To Biological Emergency Incidents In The Us Food Supply, Kristina J. Owens
Theses
Numerous emergency incidents in U.S. food supply occur each year. Incidents include invasive pests and diseases impacting agriculture crops and foodborne pathogens contaminating meat and poultry. An effective response is not just dependent on the technology that is being used, but also policy and organizational factors. This research is a cross-case analysis of two federal regulatory and emergency response agencies under the U.S. Department of Agriculture: Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). This research analyzes how each agency uses technology, policy and organizational factors to responds to their respective emergencies. This study also …

Exploring The Critical Thinking Skills Of Respiratory Care Students And Faculty, Bshayer Ramadan Alhamad
Exploring The Critical Thinking Skills Of Respiratory Care Students And Faculty, Bshayer Ramadan Alhamad
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Introduction: Today, with the increased demands in health care, working as a competentrespiratory therapist requires being a highly skilled, critically thinking professional. Although students are expected to learn how to think critically mostly in the academic environment from their faculty, only a paucity of studies has assessed the critical thinking of respiratory care students, with none, to our knowledge, assessing that of faculty. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed method study was to (1) assess the overall critical thinking skill levels of both respiratory care students and faculty, (2) investigate whether respiratory care faculty have stronger overall critical thinking skills …
The Tribology And Chemistry Of Phosphorus Containing Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson
The Tribology And Chemistry Of Phosphorus Containing Lubricant Additives, David W. Johnson
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Phosphate esters, thiophosphate esters and metal thiophosphates have been used as lubricant additives for over 50 years. Recently, phosphorus‐containing ionic liquids have emerged as a new class of lubricant additives. While the use of phosphorus compounds has been extensive, a detailed knowledge of how they work has been a much more recent development. In this chapter, the use of phosphate esters, thiophosphate esters, metal thiophosphates and phosphorus‐containing ionic liquids as antiwear or extreme pressure additives is discussed. The primary emphasis will be on how they form a protective film, which is both durable and reduces friction. The first part of …
A Few Words Of Caution As The Supreme Court Considers Fry V. Napoleon Community Schools, Kevin Golembiewski
A Few Words Of Caution As The Supreme Court Considers Fry V. Napoleon Community Schools, Kevin Golembiewski
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
This term, the Supreme Court will consider Fry v. Napoleon Community Schools. Fry implicates a circuit split on the proper scope of the exhaustion requirement in 20 U.S.C. § 1415(l) of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). That section requires parents of students with disabilities to exhaust state administrative remedies “before the filing of a civil action . . . seeking relief that is also available under” the IDEA. Two different approaches to this requirement have emerged among the courts of appeals: an “injury-centered” approach and a “relief-centered” approach. Under the injury-centered approach, exhaustion is required when a …

The Challenges That International Students Face When Integrating Into Higher Education In The United States, Raja Almurideef
Theses and Dissertations
For the last two years, the number of international students aspiring to obtain a qualification in U.S. universities has been exponentially growing by 8% (IIE, 2014). The purpose of this study was to discuss the challenges faced by international students in the United States. Although international students benefit universities, they encounter adjustment difficulties that differ from those of domestic students, such as culture shock, homesickness, loss of social support, discrimination, language barriers, loneliness, depression, anxiety, and academic adjustments. This quantitative study was conducted with undergraduate international students from different countries enrolled at Rowan University during the spring semester of 2016. …

Examining Content Validity Of The Nurse Competence Scale In The United States, Jessica B. Shearer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nursing competence is a necessity as it affects public health, safety and welfare; however there are very few reliable and valid tools that measure nursing competence. The Nurse Competence Scale has been used in many different countries outside of the United States and is based on Benner’s Novice to Expert theory. The purpose of this study was to examine the content validity of the Nurse Competence Scale using a mixed methods approach. Descriptive statistics were used to report results of the frequency of use scale and the critical to practice scale. Nursing faculty indicate Prioritizing My Activities Flexibility According to …

Ictal Kissing: Occurrence And Etiology., Ali Akbar Asadi-Pooya, Elizabeth W. Fletman
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Ictal kissing is a rare semiological manifestation in patients with epilepsy. We tried to estimate its occurrence and characterize the underlying etiology. We retrospectively reviewed all video-EEG reports from Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center over a 12-year period (2004-2015) for the occurrence of the term "kiss". We then searched the electronic database PubMed on September 21, 2016 using the following search terms in the English language: "ictal" OR "seizure" OR "epilepsy" AND "kiss" OR "kissing". Relevant original studies were included. During the study period, 5133 patients were investigated in our epilepsy monitoring unit. One patient (0.02%) had one episode of documented …

The Attitudes Of University Faculty Toward Humor As A Pedagogical Tool: Can We Take A Joke?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Faculty members in a College of Education responded to a mixed methods questionnaire regarding their attitudes toward the use of humor as a pedagogical tool. Quantitative data and coding of open response questions revealed that instructors overall considered humor to be an integral part of their teaching plan and that humor relaxes students, contributes to a more enjoyable classroom climate, and helps students make content connections, in both traditional and web based classes. Despite general acceptance, the feedback suggested instructors could benefit from targeted training in how to effectively and consistently use humor as a teaching strategy, particularly in their …

Supervision Of Students In Social Care Education: Practice Teachers' Views Of Their Role, Fiona Mcsweeney
Articles
This paper presents findings from research about how practice
teachers in social care education in Ireland view their role, in
particular what elements they prioritise and what they see as relatively
unimportant. The aim of the research was exploratory, seeking to
discover commonalities and differences in how practice teachers saw
their role in the supervision of social care students. Q methodology
was used to compare the participants’ viewpoints. Twenty practice
teachers, from varying practice backgrounds and levels of experience,
sorted statements outlining aspects of the practice teacher’s role,
during individual interviews. Analysis indicates participants had two
ways of conceptualising the …

Modern Muslims : A Sudan Memoir, Steve Howard
Modern Muslims : A Sudan Memoir, Steve Howard
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Steve Howard departed for the Sudan in the early 1980s as an American graduate student beginning a three-year journey in which he would join and live with the Republican Brotherhood, the Sufi Muslim group led by the visionary Mahmoud Mohamed Taha. Taha was a religious intellectual who participated in the early days of Sudan’s anticolonial struggle, but quickly turned his movement into a religious reform effort based on his radical reading of the Qur’an. He was executed in 1985 for apostasy.
Decades after returning to the life of an academic in the United States, Howard brings us this memoir of …

Family therapists have a unique opportunity to contribute toward the reduction of widespread mental health disparities impacting diverse populations by developing applied lines of research focused on cultural adaptation. For example, although evidence-based prevention parent training (PT) interventions have been found to be efficacious with various Euro-American populations, there is a pressing need to understand which specific components of PT interventions are perceived by ethnic minority parents as having the highest impact on their parenting practices. Equally important is to examine the perceived cultural relevance of adapted PT interventions. This qualitative investigation had the primary objective of comparing and contrasting …

Black Queer Feminist Thought: Theory And Praxis In A Community-Based Movement Organization, Christina Victoria Sneed
Master's Theses
After news of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Eric Garner – along with other incidents of racial injustice resulting in murder – peaked the media’s attention, a wave of organizing erupted across the United States. An up-and-coming activist organization, herein named BLACOUT, was one of many youth-centered organizations to hold vigils and programs to highlight racial disparities, especially those connected to policing and race-related profiling. As cisgender Black men continue to dominate the discourse on racism and systemic inequality, BLACOUT members are also some of the increasing number of Black activists who argue that the Movement for Black Lives should …
