Why Do Adolescents Use Maladaptive Emotion Regulation Strategies? The Role Of Perceived Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, And Impulsivity, Karena M. Moran
Why Do Adolescents Use Maladaptive Emotion Regulation Strategies? The Role Of Perceived Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, And Impulsivity, Karena M. Moran
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Much is known about outcomes associated with adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. However, less research has explored predictors of strategy use. The present study examined perceived effectiveness of strategies (i.e., how effective individuals believe a strategy is at decreasing negative affect or increasing positive affect) as a predictor of strategy use. The sample of 139 adolescents (Mage =15.50, 60.4% male) reported their use of regulatory strategies for positive and negative emotions and how effective they believed each strategy was at changing their emotional state in the desired direction (i.e., more positive, less negative). Strategies were aggregated into adaptive and …
The Role Of Mirnas In Niche Regulation Of All Phenotype, Blake Stephen Moses
The Role Of Mirnas In Niche Regulation Of All Phenotype, Blake Stephen Moses
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While modern acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) treatment regimens have dramatically improved the survival of ALL patients, disease relapse still occurs in approximately 20% of cases. ALL relapse is, in part, due to the inability of traditional chemotherapeutic agents to efficiently target quiescent, non-dividing tumor cells. The number of viable remaining leukemia cells in patients after initial treatment, termed minimal residual disease (MRD), is directly correlated with likelihood of disease relapse. This reflects the proliferative potential of these refractory cells, consistent with the ability of their healthy hematopoietic progenitor pro- and pre-B cell counterparts. Developing novel therapies to combat refractory disease …
Characteristics Of Bubble Behavior In Microgravity Conditions, Thilanka Munasinghe
Characteristics Of Bubble Behavior In Microgravity Conditions, Thilanka Munasinghe
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The main objective of this thesis is to study the characteristics of bubbles in pool boiling under microgravity conditions with and without the influence of a magnetic field. In order to create microgravity conditions, the parabolic path of an aircraft was used for a period of 20-30 seconds, during which time the experiment was conducted. Two cylindrical tanks were used for the boiling process in the experiment. One tank had a permanent magnet attached at the bottom, and the other one was kept as the control. MnCl2 was dissolved in distilled water to make a paramagnetic liquid, and which used …
Hydroclimatic Assessment Of Changing Climate On Diarrheal Diseases With Reference To Cholera, Fariborz Nasr Azadani
Hydroclimatic Assessment Of Changing Climate On Diarrheal Diseases With Reference To Cholera, Fariborz Nasr Azadani
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The association of cholera with the climatic processes is well documented. However the effects of changing climate on occurrence of cholera is not yet evaluated, perhaps due to unavailability of geophysical data and their quantitative linkages with cholera. Global climate models (GCMs) outputs are available at coarse resolution of 200-300km, but the diseases usually occur at 10-15 km, therefore, it is rather challenging to link any GCM outputs with a disease. The goal of this research is to develop algorithms that can link diarrheal diseases with changing climatic conditions. Within this context, cholera is used as a model disease due …
Associations Among Task Self-Efficacy, Physical Activity And Subjective Wellbeing, Abigail M. Nehrkorn
Associations Among Task Self-Efficacy, Physical Activity And Subjective Wellbeing, Abigail M. Nehrkorn
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The physical and psychological health benefits resulting from physical activity engagement have been documented in previous literature, including the connection between physical activity and subjective wellbeing (SWB). Associations have also been found between task-related self-efficacy and physical activity, connecting these concepts to Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1982, 1997), such that retaining a higher belief in one's physical activity abilities has been associated with successful physical activity engagement. Previous literature has documented these separate associations, but not as much focus has been placed on examining task self-efficacy, physical activity, and SWB in one model, especially during the time of …
Cardiac And Mitochondrial Impacts Of Acute Pulmonary Xenobiotic Exposure, Cody Edward Nichols
Cardiac And Mitochondrial Impacts Of Acute Pulmonary Xenobiotic Exposure, Cody Edward Nichols
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
With every breath, we breathe in foreign materials, xenobiotic particles. These particles can interact with our tissues and influence the systems within. Airborne xenobiotic particles classically refer to ambient particulate matter (PM), but with technological advancement and the flourishing of nanotechnology, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have become entwined in the definition. Because the term xenobiotic particles encompasses particles with a broad range of size, shapes and chemical composition, definition of the properties that induce toxicity can be difficult, yet crucial to understand and predicting which of these characteristics is capable of inducing toxicity. This concept is crucial as nanotechnology moves forward …
Targeting The Peripheral Immune System As A Source Of Precision Stroke Biomarkers: Implications For Clinical Diagnostics And Immunotherapeutics, Grant C. O'Connell
Targeting The Peripheral Immune System As A Source Of Precision Stroke Biomarkers: Implications For Clinical Diagnostics And Immunotherapeutics, Grant C. O'Connell
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Early and accurate diagnosis of stroke improves the probability of positive outcome, however the tools available to clinicians for the identification of stroke are limited. It is well established that the peripheral immune system responds robustly to ischemic brain injury, and thus may be a viable source of stroke biomarkers. The objective of this work was to utilize high throughput transcriptomics in combination with machine learning techniques to identify patterns of gene expression in peripheral whole blood with the potential to diagnose ischemic stroke, and to further determine the role of such gene expression patterns within the context of stroke …
Disaggregating Behavioral And Psychological Components Of Religious And Spiritual Development Across Adolescence: Variations By Geographic Location, Rebecca Olson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Religious behavior and spirituality have been consistently found to be associated with a host of positive youth outcomes including increased grade point average (Ferris, Oosterhoff, & Metzger, 2013) and community service (Paxton, Reith, & Glanville, 2014) and decreased substance use (Milot & Ludden, 2009). However, few studies have investigated how religious behavior and spirituality uniquely and interactively predict these outcomes, as well as how these associations vary across city and rural contexts. The current study sought to investigate how religious behavior and spirituality predict youth outcomes in both rural and city youth populations. Participants included 743 youth from a mid-sized …
Effects Of Housing Condition And Acute Nicotine On Impulsive Choice In Lewis And Fischer 344 Rats, Jenny E. Ozga
Effects Of Housing Condition And Acute Nicotine On Impulsive Choice In Lewis And Fischer 344 Rats, Jenny E. Ozga
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Impulsive choice is defined as choice for a smaller, more immediate reinforcer relative to a larger, delayed reinforcer, and is commonly studied using delay-discounting procedures. There are many variables that contribute to impulsive choice, including biological and environmental determinants. The present study examined both of these variables by evaluating effects of housing condition (single versus paired) on impulsive choice in Lewis (LEW) and Fischer 344 (F344) rats, at baseline and following acute nicotine administration. A within-session procedure was used in which choice was between one food pellet delivered immediately and three food pellets delivered after a delay. The delay to …
Investigation Of Combustion Phenomena In A Single-Cylinder Spark-Ignited Natural Gas Engine With Optical Access, Vishnu Padmanaban
Investigation Of Combustion Phenomena In A Single-Cylinder Spark-Ignited Natural Gas Engine With Optical Access, Vishnu Padmanaban
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
More demanding efficiency and emissions standards for internal combustion (IC) engines require novel combustion strategies, alternative fuels, and improved after-treatment systems. However, their development depends on improved understanding of in-cylinder processes. For example, the lower efficiency of conventional spark-ignited (SI) natural-gas (NG) engines reduces their utilization in the transportation sector. Single-cylinder optical-access research engines allow the use of non-intrusive visualization techniques that study in-cylinder flow, fuel-oxidizer mixing, and combustion and emissions phenomena under conditions representative of production engines. These visualization techniques can provide qualitative and quantitative answers to fundamental combustion-phenomena questions such as the effects of engine design, operating conditions, …
Elucidating Mechanisms Of Neurobehavioral Dysfunction In A Rodent Model Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Aric F. Logsdon
Elucidating Mechanisms Of Neurobehavioral Dysfunction In A Rodent Model Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Aric F. Logsdon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive deficits are common among victims of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and currently, there are no effective treatments to improve outcome. We first developed a clinically-relevant blast TBI model based on lung scaling parameters to elucidate mechanisms of neuronal cell death. In order to discover effective treatments to improve outcome, we had to validate our novel preclinical model of TBI. TBI is an external force that can cause damage to the neurovascular unit (NVU), which can lead to secondary effects, cell death and behavioral dysfunction. In our first study we observed that our model damaged the …
Novel Immunoregulatory Elements In A Murine Model Of Epicutaneous Chemical Sensitization: A Role For Regulatory T Cells And Microrna 210, Carrie Mae Long
Novel Immunoregulatory Elements In A Murine Model Of Epicutaneous Chemical Sensitization: A Role For Regulatory T Cells And Microrna 210, Carrie Mae Long
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is a low molecular weight chemical sensitizer and a major cause of occupational allergic disease and asthma. The roles of immunomodulatory elements such as microRNAs, which alter gene expression, and regulatory T cells (Tregs), which suppress T cell-mediated responses, in chemical sensitization are not fully elucidated. In order to further investigate the functional role of miR-210 and Tregs during TDI sensitization, BALB/c mice were dermally exposed to a single, sensitizing dose of TDI (0.5-4% v/v) and evaluated for immunologic endpoints. dLN T regs were phenotyped during TDI sensitization and a heterogeneous, expanded population was observed. To examine …

Investigation Of Particulate Matter Size, Concentration And Mass Emissions From Small Handheld 2-Stroke Spark Ignition Engines, Yashwanth Chowdary Maddineni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Quality of air, change in the climate and exposure of humans to pollutants have become major concerns globally over the past decade. Particulate matter has been linked to many adverse health effects. Internal combustion engines are major source of PM emissions. Knowing the adverse health effects of particulate matter, the regulatory agencies are in the process of introducing strict regulations to limit the quantity of PM emitted by off-road small handheld gasoline engines. Two-stroke small engines typically emit more smoke as they burn oil-gasoline mixture compared to four-stroke engines running on gasoline only. Current regulations in the United States for …
The Effect Of Ovine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells On Haemonchus Contortus Larval Death In Vitro, Elizabeth Anne Shepherd
The Effect Of Ovine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells On Haemonchus Contortus Larval Death In Vitro, Elizabeth Anne Shepherd
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is the greatest problem facing small ruminant livestock, largely due to development of anthelmintic resistance. Of particular concern is Haemonchus contortus, a hematophagous trichostrongylid that can lead to death in lambs or immunocompromised sheep. Some breeds of sheep are resistant to Haemonchosis, e.g. St. Croix (STC) hair sheep. St. Croix sheep have well-documented resistance and have been shown to develop a robust immune response, generating a rapid cellular response to larval stages that does not occur in susceptible sheep. Studies evaluating effects of mononuclear cells, including monocytes and lymphocytes, indicate that these cells dramatically reduce motility of …
The Effect Of Common Wrist Orthoses On The Stiffness Of Wrist Rotations, Daniel B. Seegmiller, Dennis L. Eggett, Steven K. Charles
The Effect Of Common Wrist Orthoses On The Stiffness Of Wrist Rotations, Daniel B. Seegmiller, Dennis L. Eggett, Steven K. Charles
Faculty Publications
Wrist orthoses (also known as splints, braces, or supports) are commonly used to support or restrict the motion of a weak or injured wrist. These orthoses generally function by stiffening the wrist joint. Therefore, choosing the proper orthosis (or improving orthoses) requires that we understand their stiffness properties. In this study, we present a method for measuring the stiffness of wrist orthoses, and we apply this method to 12 of the most common wrist orthoses. We found similarities and differences between these orthoses, indicating that different orthoses have different effects on the wrist joint and, presumably, on wrist behavior. In …

Reliability Generalization Of The Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure- Revised (Meim-R), Timothy B. Smith, Hayley Marie Herrington, Erin Feinauer, Derek Griner
Faculty Publications
Individuals’ strength of ethnic identity has been linked with multiple positive indicators, including academic achievement and overall psychological well-being. The measure researchers use most often to assess ethnic identity, the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), underwent substantial revision in 2007. To inform scholars investigating ethnic identity, a reliability generalization analysis was performed on data from the revised version (MEIM–R) and compared with data from the original MEIM. Random-effects weighted models evaluated internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach’s alpha). Reliability coefficients for the MEIM–R averaged α = .88 across 37 samples, a statistically significant increase over the average of α = .84 for …

The new generation of whole genome sequencing platforms offers great possibilities and challenges for dissecting the genetic basis of complex traits. With a very high number of sequence variants, a naïve multiple hypothesis threshold correction hinders the identification of reliable associations by the overreduction of statistical power. In this report, we examine 2 alternative approaches to improve the statistical power of a whole genome association study to detect reliable genetic associations. The approaches were tested using the Genetic Analysis Workshop 19 (GAW19) whole genome sequencing data. The first tested method estimates the real number of effective independent tests actually being …

Applying Psychological Reactance Theory To Communication Between Adult Child Caregivers And Their Older Adult Parents, Hannah Ball
Applying Psychological Reactance Theory To Communication Between Adult Child Caregivers And Their Older Adult Parents, Hannah Ball
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Given the rapid growth of the older adult population in the US and the number of adult children providing informal care to their older adult parents, there is a need for a better understanding of how communication can be used to negotiate the tension between dependence and autonomy in these caregiving relationships (Egbert, 2014; Morgan & Hummert, 2000). Guided by psychological reactance theory (Brehm, 1966; Brehm & Brehm, 1981), which posits that individuals value their autonomy and are motivated to restore it when they perceive that it is being threatened, the purpose of this dissertation was twofold: (a) to explore …

Three Essays Analyzing The Pricing Of A Community Supported Agriculture System, Dwayne Bauknight
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The current landscape of small farms is approaching a major shift as more and more small farms are poised to come onto open marketplace around urban areas. A different farming business model called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has been utilized as new way for farmers to potentially earn above average revenue. However, small farmers still feel dissatisfied with their overall farm income, but when implementing the CSA business model the producers do feel that the CSA enhances their overall income satisfaction. Three essays were developed to examine this predicament. The first essay examined possible economic pricing models that a CSA …
Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley
Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Trees are subjected to mechanical stressors, induced via dynamic (wind) and static (gravitational) forces, and must properly acclimate during their lifespan or face premature mortality. Resource allocation as a stress response is vital for tree survival, and can include the shedding of woody parts, adaptive growth, hormonal signaling cascades, and the initiation of energy transfer mechanisms. The strain resulting from stress intercepted by the canopy and transferred throughout the tree is of significant importance, not only for tree survival, but for the safety and well-being of the human population found in close proximity. As trees age and adapt to stressors …
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Cerebrovascular Dysfunction In Metabolic Syndrome And Depression: Mechanisms And Implications For Neurovascular Disease, Steven David Brooks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cerebrovascular diseases are any pathological conditions that are caused by disruptions or alterations in the blood supply to the brain. The brain, which is only 2% of body mass, constantly requires a minimum of 20% of cardiac output to meet its unique metabolic demands. Cerebral tissue relies on aerobic respiration and therefore requires a constant, steady supply of blood to provide oxygen and glucose to make ATP. Insufficient perfusion of the brain, which occurs as a result of reduced or obstructed blood flow, results in cerebral ischemia; ischemic neurons quickly deplete their available ATP and die if blood flow is …
Conversion To Evangelical Christianity During College: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Meagan Alicia Brunson
Conversion To Evangelical Christianity During College: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Meagan Alicia Brunson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Psychology has a history of ignoring and pathologizing spiritual experiences. Many of the fathers of early psychology including Freud, Ellis, and Skinner modeled this trend. However, with the increasing awareness of the importance of multicultural factors as they relate to mental health, religion and spirituality have gained recognition in the professional literature. Research on religion and spirituality and college students has mainly consisted of survey studies collecting demographic data. The current study uses a qualitative research design to explore the experiences of college students who converted to Christianity during college. The guiding questions of this research pertain mainly to the …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The High Voltage (HV) batteries that are used today in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV), Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV), and Electric Vehicles (EV) utilize cooling systems to keep the battery packs within optimal operating temperature ranges. Manufacturers spend a generous amount of money to design these cooling systems to keep the batteries within these safe operating temperature requirements during harsh conditions, such as extreme cold and heat. Desert conditions can reach an average ambient temperature of 40°C. The temperature of the batteries can affect their performance, reliability, and the health of each cell. The Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery systems …

Water Permeability Of New And Maximum Laundered Isolation Gown Cuffs, Stacey Kamarec
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
ANSI/AAMI PB70 "Liquid barrier performance and classification of protective apparel and drapes intended for use in healthcare facilities" sets barrier performance requirements for the classification of isolation gowns. Manufacturers voluntarily follow these requirements for gowns used in minimal and low risk situations but end users must decide which gown is most suitable for the required task. ANSI/AAMI PB70 classifies isolation gowns based on the level of barrier protection the gowns are expected to provide and recommends several tests to help manufacturers assign the levels to the gowns (1-4). Published literature has identified performance concerns of isolation gowns, but there are …
