Marketing Research For Mission-Based Thrift Suggests Relationship Marketing Strategy, Jon M. Martin

AMTP Proceedings 2016

In order to alleviate the risks associated with a lack of objective marketing research data and to apply marketing research in a unique niche, the author, in collaboration with a local mission-based thrift (“Thrift XYZ”), conducts marketing research regarding the motivations and preferences of shoppers and donators for one primary thrift location in North Carolina as a gratis community service. The findings are that XYZ’s shoppers and donators routinely and regularly shop and donate (respectively) with XYZ and that the nature of this target market is ideal for developing and applying a relationship marketing strategy with each/both groups.

An Examination Of The Marketing Of A Floundering Sport: The Case Of Powerboat Racing, Sam Fullerton Jan 2016

An Examination Of The Marketing Of A Floundering Sport: The Case Of Powerboat Racing, Sam Fullerton

AMTP Proceedings 2016

A sample of 308 attendees at an APBA sanctioned powerboat race in July of 2015 provided insight regarding a number of key considerations germane to the decision to attend the race. Race organizers were seeking ways to reinvigorate interest in what they see as a floundering – if not sinking – sport. A self-administered survey was distributed at the race with those completing it having a chance to win a souvenir shirt from the races. The results indicate that better marketing is needed. WOM represented the most common means by which attendees learned about the event; much of this was …

Determining The Influence Of Electronic Messages On Consumer Behavior Based On Perceived Source Trust And Credibility, Mackenzie Sawyer, Tasha Hendershot, Shala Nettles, Sindy Chapa

AMTP Proceedings 2016

This research examines how heterosexual consumers react to explicit LGBT images in advertising, specifically pertaining to their personal relationships with LGBT individuals. The methodology used for this study was an online survey containing likert-scale, multiple choice, free response, and demographic questions. The survey was distributed online with the help of several organizations. The findings from this research show that heterosexual consumers generally have positive attitudes toward advertising that used LGBT imagery. Further, having a personal relationship with someone who identifies as LGBT seems to have an effect on overall attitudes toward LGBT imagery in advertising.

Immunological Response To Haemonchus Contortus Antigen In Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Of Parasite Resistant And Susceptible Sheep, Jesica Rae Jacobs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Parasitism by Haemonchus contortus is the greatest concern of sheep producers and results in billions of dollars in economic loss each year. St. Croix hair sheep are naturally resistant to H. contortus infection, but have body characteristics which are unfavorable for production. Resistance to H. contortus is immune mediated; characterized by a T helper type 2 (Th2) response, however the mechanism of the development of immune response is not known. In these studies, immunological responses of parasite resistant St. Croix sheep and Suffolk sheep peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) are evaluated in response to H. contortus antigens. Three uninfected H. …

Extensional Flow Blending Of Immiscible Polymers With Nanoparticle Stabilization, Matthew S. Thompson Jan 2016

Extensional Flow Blending Of Immiscible Polymers With Nanoparticle Stabilization, Matthew S. Thompson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Polymer blending facilitates the combination of the attractive attributes of two or more polymers while compensating for the unfavorable ones. Most polymers are thermodynamically incompatible with one another, and their blending yields a two-phase microstructure. This morphology generally determines the mechanical and rheological properties of the blend system which then determine its applications. Morphology development typically involves deformation of the dispersed phase followed by drop breakup. However, drop coalescence competes with this process, and ultimately a balance must be reached between these two competing processes. Extensional flow fields are known to promote drop breakup and are especially important for blends …

The Effects Of Overprotective Parenting On Academic Self-Esteem: The Moderating Role Of Teachers, Brittany R. Valdez Jan 2016

The Effects Of Overprotective Parenting On Academic Self-Esteem: The Moderating Role Of Teachers, Brittany R. Valdez

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Overprotective parenting, or "helicopter parenting" as it is known in the media, is characterized by high levels of behavioral and psychological control, and has been found by previous empirical studies to be linked to several maladaptive child outcomes (Wood, McLeod, Sigman, Hwang, & Chu, 2003). These outcomes include increased levels of anxiety, depression (Bayer, Sanson, & Hemphill, 2006; LeMoyne & Buchanan, 2011; Schiffrin, Liss, Miles-McLean, Geary, & Erchull 2013), and shyness (Bayer, et al., 2006; Rubin, Coplan, & Bowker, 2009) as well as decreased academic outcomes (Bernstein & Triger, 2010; Padilla-Walker & Nelson, 2012). However, much of the research regarding …

The Effectiveness Of Diabetic Shared Medical Appointments To Improve Access And Outcomes, Amanda P. Wakim Jan 2016

The Effectiveness Of Diabetic Shared Medical Appointments To Improve Access And Outcomes, Amanda P. Wakim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Diabetes in Appalachia is a health problem with escalating incidence and cost. The increased aging population and inadequate healthy life choices are main contributors to the diabetes epidemic. As the incidence of diabetes increases, the current one-to-one, patient-to-provider health care delivery system is insufficient to meet the needs of persons with diabetes. Furthermore, as the prevalence of diabetes increases, the access to endocrinologists in northern West Virginia becomes more limited. Increased incidence and decreased access results in poor health outcomes, increased medical costs, and patient and provider dissatisfaction with the health care system. The shared medical appointment (SMA) is an …

Perceptions Of The Bereaved: Attributions, Emotions, And Prosocial Behavior, Christine Weir Jan 2016

Perceptions Of The Bereaved: Attributions, Emotions, And Prosocial Behavior, Christine Weir

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explored a new application of Weiner's Attributional Model to suicide bereavement, and how friends and coworkers respond in their emotions and prosocial behavior. This is a comprehensive theoretical model addressing how people respond to negative events occurring in the lives of others. Its premise is the influence of attributions on the behavior, affect, and cognitive processes of the helper. The model's broad underpinnings are that attributions for challenging behavior can in turn produce a crucial effect on helping behavior. Previous qualitative research on suicide survivors has suggested that attitudes and beliefs towards suicide survivors by those in the …

The Role Of West Virginia University In The Economic Development Of West Virginia: A General Equilibrium Approach, Priyanjali Sinha Jan 2016

The Role Of West Virginia University In The Economic Development Of West Virginia: A General Equilibrium Approach, Priyanjali Sinha

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Universities, industries and government are major institutions and play an important role in local economic growth and development. They often work collectively in achieving these goals. While the role of institutions in economic development is well-founded in the literature, a university's strategic role as an institution to encourage local area development is only now being recognized. The existing literature recognizes the spillover effect of mainly university research on local industrial productivity and innovations at the national level. The impact of various university activities on numerous other local economic development indicators like per capita income, poverty, school enrollments etc., at county …

In The Pursuit Of Happiness All Family Leisure Is Not Equal, Karen K. Melton, Ramon Zabriskie Jan 2016

In The Pursuit Of Happiness All Family Leisure Is Not Equal, Karen K. Melton, Ramon Zabriskie

Faculty Publications

In the context of family leisure, individuals are more likely to achieve happiness when recreating with their families in predictable activities and in familiar environments. This hypothesis was tested by comparing three models predicting individual happiness. The three models were grounded in distinct frameworks of family leisure incongruity: (a) the null model – all family leisure is equal; (b) activity incongruity model – familiar versus unfamiliar family activities; and (c) location incongruity model – indoor-home, outdoor-home, community, and beyond the community. Analyses used a sample of 1502 individuals in 751 families from the U.K. Models were assessed using multi-level modelling. …

Clones In The Mba Classroom: Understanding The Relationship Between Culture And Mba Students’ Attitudes Toward Socially Responsible Business Leadership: A Mixed Methods Cross-National Study, Juan F. Roche

Dissertations

Recurrent corporate scandals have underscored the need for business leaders, the majority of whom were trained in business schools, to address tradeoffs between the interests of investors and those who serve the common good as an expression of socially responsible business leadership (SRBL). This study offers an integrated corporate social responsibility model (ICSRM), which displays the factors that scholarly research suggests promote and hinder corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice. However, because the CSR concept originated in the United States and the American business school model is replicated across the globe, most theories that support this conceptual framework were developed through …
