The planned HL-LHC (High Luminosity LHC) in 2025 is being designed to maximise the physics potential through a sizable increase in the luminosity up to 6centerdot1034 cm−2s−1. A consequence of this increased luminosity is the expected radiation damage at 3000 fb−1 after ten years of operation, requiring the tracking detectors to withstand fluences to over 1centerdot1016 1 MeV neq/cm2. In order to cope with the consequent increased readout rates, a complete re-design of the current ATLAS Inner Detector (ID) is being developed as the Inner Tracker (ITk).

Influence Of Dietary Vitamin D3 Supplementation On The Sarcomere Length,Warner?Bratzler Shear Force, Shortening Of Ageing Time, And Sensory Acceptanceof Culinary Beef Muscles, Urszula Karolina Rafalska
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary vitamin D3 supplementation on ageing time, tenderness, and consumer acceptance of 3 muscles: longissimus lumborum, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus from crossbreed bulls. Bulls (n = 48) were divided into 4 experimental groups (n = 12 each) that were administered ground oats supplemented with various amounts of vitamin D3 (0.0, 3.5, 7.0, or 10.0 x 106 IU) at 1 day before slaughter. To determine the effect of vitamin D3 addition, changes in tenderness were measured by sarcomere length and Warner?Bratzler shear force (WBSF). In addition, all of the muscles were …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Recently, some Brucella abortus were isolated from human and various livestock in Mongolia, and the classical biotyping and molecular detection methods (PCR assays, 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, and multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA)) were applied to investigate them. Of the 16 isolates, nine and seven were confirmed as biovar (bv.) 3 and untyped by the classical biotyping assay, respectively. The phenotypic characteristics of the untyped isolates were consistent with those of the former B. abortus bv. 7, which is not included in the current Brucella taxonomy. Additionally, genus- and species-specific PCR supported that the untyped Mongolian isolates belonged …

China’S New Law On Exploration And Exploitation Of Resources In The International Seabed Area Of 2016, Nengye Liu, Rakhyun Kim
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Despite its rich metallic mineral resources on land,1 the People’s Republic of China (China) has been actively exploring for deep seabed minerals in the international seabed area (the Area).2 The legal framework is provided by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOSC).3 China and the Russian Federation are the only States currently sponsoring exploration of all three types of deep seabed mineral deposit in the Area (polymetallic nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, seafloor massive sulphides in the South West Indian Ridge, the Central Indian Ridge, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, and cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts in the …
The Implications Of The Trans-Pacific Partnership For Smes: Opportunities And Challenges, Heng Wang
The Implications Of The Trans-Pacific Partnership For Smes: Opportunities And Challenges, Heng Wang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) will have profound implications for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within and beyond the free trade area. SME issues get more attention in the TPP than previous FTAs. Since there is limited research on the impact of the FTAs on SMEs, it is of great significance to probe into the practical implications of the TPP for SMEs. The key question will be analyzed: what are the challenges and opportunities that the TPP hold for SMEs? It is argued that, first, the support to SMEs, tariff elimination or reduction, and the reduction of non-tariff barriers are major …
The Problematic Applicability Of Subsidiarity To International Law, Paolo G. Carozza
The Problematic Applicability Of Subsidiarity To International Law, Paolo G. Carozza
Journal Articles
This article seeks to explore some of the reasons why the principle of subsidiarity, although applicable in some sectors of international law and particularly in the field of international human rights law, has difficulty in serving as a general principle of public international law more broadly. The obstacles to advancing a more robust understanding of subsidiarity's place in the current structure of global norms and institutions include: the normative and institutional fragmentation of international law; the continuing centrality of state sovereignty in the international legal system; and the endemic weaknesses and incapacity of states and sub-state communities with respect to …
The Future Of Abortion Law In The United States, Gerard V. Bradley
The Future Of Abortion Law In The United States, Gerard V. Bradley
Journal Articles
In 1971, Judith Jarvis Thomson published what was then and still often is regarded as a trailblazing philosophical defense of a woman’s right to have a lawful abortion. It is time to revisit Thomson’s paper. The aim here is not to engage Thomson’s pro-choice conclusions, which are indeed mistaken, but to show that her question—to what extent can abortion be morally justified, assuming that it is the deliberate killing of one person by his or her mother—is the question today in American law concerning abortion. Pro-life people and groups argue among themselves about the prudence of political efforts to roll …

Affirmatively Furthering Neighborhood Choice: Vacant Property Strategies And Fair Housing, James J. Kelly Jr.
Journal Articles
When many of us think about fair housing enforcement, scenes involving undercover apartment applicants ferreting out racially biased landlords come to mind. Indeed, fair housing "testers" have been and continue to be an important element of civil rights accountability.' However, implementation of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 has had at least as much to do with increasing the supply of decent, affordable housing options to members of protected groups as with assuring those individuals that they will not be denied a particular housing unit because of the color of their skin or a disability.
This macro aspect of fair …
A Code-Based Approach To Unauthorized Access Under The Computer Fraud Abuse Act, Patricia L. Bellia
A Code-Based Approach To Unauthorized Access Under The Computer Fraud Abuse Act, Patricia L. Bellia
Journal Articles
Thirty years ago, Congress passed the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) to combat the emerging problem of computer crime. The statute’s core prohibitions targeted one who “accesses” a computer “without authorization” or who “exceeds authorized access.” Over time, incremental statutory changes and large-scale technical changes have dramatically expanded the potential scope of the CFAA. The question of what constitutes unauthorized access has taken on far greater significance than it had thirty years ago, and courts remain deeply divided on this question. This Article explores the text, purpose, and history of the CFAA, as well as a range of normative …

Honey bee health and colony collapse disorder (CCD), a term coined in 2006, have been drawing global attention as bees are dying at a rapid rate. The University of Maryland reported that beekeepers across the US lost more than 40 percent of their honey bee colonies during the year spanning April 2014 to April 2015[1]. With seventy out of the top 100 human food crops, which supply about 90 percent of the world’s nutrition, being pollinated by bees [4], this puts our food supply at serious risk!
Formed from a grant from the US Department of Agriculture, the Bee Informed …
Modern-Day Monitorships, Veronica Root
Modern-Day Monitorships, Veronica Root
Journal Articles
When a sexual abuse scandal rocked Penn State, when Apple engaged in anticompetitive behavior, and when servicers like Bank of America improperly foreclosed upon hundreds of thousands of homeowners, each organization entered into a Modern-Day Monitorship. Modern-Day Monitorships are utilized in an array of contexts to assist in widely varying remediation efforts. They provide outsiders a unique source of information about the efficacy of the tarnished organization’s efforts to remediate misconduct. Yet despite their use in high-profile and serious matters of organizational wrongdoing, they are not an outgrowth of careful study and deliberate planning. Instead, Modern-Day Monitorships have been employed …

Guidance For The Practical Management Of The Heparin Anticoagulants In The Treatment Of Venous Thromboembolism., Maureen A. Smythe, Jennifer Priziola, Paul P. Dobesh, Diane Wirth, Adam Cuker, Ann K. Wittkowsky
Journal Articles: Pharmacy Practice
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious and often fatal medical condition with an increasing incidence. Despite the changing landscape of VTE treatment with the introduction of the new direct oral anticoagulants many uncertainties remain regarding the optimal use of traditional parenteral agents. This manuscript, initiated by the Anticoagulation Forum, provides clinical guidance based on existing guidelines and consensus expert opinion where guidelines are lacking. This specific chapter addresses the practical management of heparins including low molecular weight heparins and fondaparinux. For each anticoagulant a list of the most common practice related questions were created. Each question was addressed using a …

Professor Jack Balkin has assembled a group of 9 scholars and advocates to write opinions in the Obergefell v. Hodges case for a forthcoming volume, What Obergefell Should Have Said (Yale University Press 2017). Balkin writes for the majority of the Court and I provide a concurrence along with a short commentary explaining my approach and reasoning. In summary, I conclude that: Laws barring same-sex couples from eligibility for licensure as civil marriages violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because they find their origin in and perpetuate notions of heterosexual supremacy, and have the aim and effect …

Politics And Agencies In The Administrative State: The U.S. Case, Peter L. Strauss
Faculty Scholarship
The pending American presidential election, culminating a period of extreme political partisanship in our national government generally, gives point to an essay on politics and agencies in the American regulatory state. In our two-party system, it has often been the case in recent times, including the last six years, that the President comes from one of our two major political parties and one or both houses of Congress are controlled by the other. All American agencies (including, in the American case, the so-called independent regulatory bodies) are associated with the President in the executive branch, yet dependent on the Senate …

The University of Pennsylvania Law Review’s symposium on executive discretion, held in the fall of 2015 but just published this November, is an important undertaking, but it is remarkable for several silences – for things left unsaid on this important subject – and for questions not asked. First, although the Constitution’s “Take Care” Clause is extensively discussed, the one power Article II gives the President over domestic administration – to require the “Opinion, in writing” of the heads of the agencies Congress has invested with administrative duties – is not. Second, the discussion of the President’s undoubted but possibly …
Epidural Hematoma Treated Conservatively: When To Expect The Worst, Julie Lamoureux
Epidural Hematoma Treated Conservatively: When To Expect The Worst, Julie Lamoureux
All Publications
Background: The Brain Trauma Foundation’s 2006 surgical guidelines have objectively defined the epidural hematoma (EDH) patients who can be treated conservatively. Since then, the literature has not provided adequate clues to identify patients who are at higher risk for EDH progression (EDHP) and conversion to surgical therapy. The goal of our study was to identify those patients.
Methods: We carried a retrospective review over a 5-year period of all EDH who were initially triaged for conservative management. Demographic data, injury severity and history, neurological status, use of anticoagulants or anti-platelets, radiological parameters, conversion to surgery and its timing, and Glasgow …

Angiotensin Ii-Induced Hypertension Is Attenuated By Overexpressing Copper/Zinc Superoxide Dismutase In The Brain Organum Vasculosum Of The Lamina Terminalis., John P. Collister, Heather Taylor-Smith, Donna Drebes, David Nahey, Jun Tian, Matthew C. Zimmerman
Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology
Angiotensin II (AngII) can access the brain via circumventricular organs (CVOs), including the subfornical organ (SFO) and organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT), to modulate blood pressure. Previous studies have demonstrated a role for both the SFO and OVLT in the hypertensive response to chronic AngII, yet it is unclear which intracellular signaling pathways are involved in this response. Overexpression of copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD) in the SFO has been shown to attenuate the chronic hypertensive effects of AngII. Presently, we tested the hypothesis that elevated levels of superoxide (O2 (∙-)) in the OVLT contribute to the hypertensive effects …

Herbicides containing paraquat may contribute to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease. Paraquat induces reactive oxygen species-mediated apoptosis in neurons, which is a primary mechanism behind its toxicity. We sought to test the effectiveness of a commercially available polyphenol-rich Aronia melanocarpa (aronia berry) concentrate in the amelioration of paraquat-induced neurotoxicity. Considering the abundance of antioxidants in aronia berries, we hypothesized that aronia berry concentrate attenuates the paraquat-induced increase in reactive oxygen species and protects against paraquat-mediated neuronal cell death. Using a neuronal cell culture model, we observed that low doses of aronia berry concentrate protected against paraquat-mediated …

Bordering The Constitution, Constituting The Border, Efrat Arbel
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
It is an established principle in Canadian law that refugees present at or within Canada’s borders are entitled to basic constitutional protection. Where precisely these borders lie, however, is far from clear. In this article, I examine the Canadian border as a site at which to study the constitutional entitlements of refugees. Through an analysis of the Multiple Borders Strategy (MBS)--a broad strategy that re-charts Canada’s borders for the purposes of enhanced migration regulation--I point to a basic tension at play in the border as site. I argue that the MBS imagines and enacts the border in two fundamentally different …

The National Football League (NFL) is a multi-billion-dollar organization that is constantly utilizing impression management techniques to craft its public image. Currently, the NFL is embroiled in what many refer to as the "concussion crisis." When the NFL discusses this issue, one of the most common impression management techniques used is framing and accounts. This research brings together these two concepts to study this issue. I have analyzed a sample of press releases from the NFL using qualitative content analysis. From this, I have found and defined some common frames used, when they are used, and then used accounts research …

Cross-Spectral Full And Partial Face Recognition: Preprocessing, Feature Extraction And Matching, Zhicheng Cao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cross-spectral face recognition remains a challenge in the area of biometrics. The problem arises from some real-world application scenarios such as surveillance at night time or in harsh environments, where traditional face recognition techniques are not suitable or limited due to usage of imagery obtained in the visible light spectrum. This motivates the study conducted in the dissertation which focuses on matching infrared facial images against visible light images. The study outspreads from aspects of face recognition such as preprocessing to feature extraction and to matching.;We address the problem of cross-spectral face recognition by proposing several new operators and algorithms …

Background: Formula supplementation of healthy, term, breastfed infants born to mothers who plan to exclusively breastfeed persists at high rates, in spite of global reduction efforts. The identification of modifiable risk factors for supplementation and effective nursing care for successful breastfeeding is understudied.
Purpose: This study aimed to better understand the obstetrical, hospital, and nursing factors associated with supplementation during the hospital stay. The aims were: (1) examine the relationships between aspects of hospital care of infants who are supplemented compared to infants exclusively breastfed and (2) determine what in-hospital risk factors increase the odds of formula supplementation among a …

Today’s tree wardens are continually called upon to strike a balance between preservation of public trees and protection of the public from hazardous tree conditions. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been a pioneer in tree protection legislation, including the enactment of the first state legislation requiring a municipal tree warden. As guardians of the municipal landscape, tree wardens decide whether and when to plant new public shade trees, or to permit those that already exist to be cut, trimmed, or removed. This Article describes the important historical role the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has played in protecting public trees, the legal …

Paint Nite activities and adult coloring have captured the nation’s interest and gone mainstream. Creating something on our own is what drives similar trends like the popular Do It Yourself movement and the resurgence of knitting after 9/11. At the same time, these fun, creative activities can provide us with a window into the process of legal writing. Using Paint Nite as a reference point throughout a legal writing course allows faculty to present a holistic view of the writing process and provides a useful analogy for faculty as well as an accessible context for students. Legal writing instructors share …
