Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder & Narrative Comprehension Deficits In College Students, Laura E. Vincent Jan 2016

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder & Narrative Comprehension Deficits In College Students, Laura E. Vincent

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The current study examined if the narrative comprehension deficits that children with ADHD exhibit during childhood and adolescence continue in college students as a function of ADHD symptoms, and if a relationship existed between ADHD symptoms and self-efficacy. Children and adolescence with ADHD have difficulties in several areas of narrative comprehension, including maintaining goal structure, distinguishing important events from unimportant events, and making causal connections. If these deficits persist there also may be a relationship between ADHD symptoms and self-efficacy.

Higher levels of ADHD symptomatology were associated with difficulties recalling story events in the college population. Some findings differed from …

Deep Brain Stimulation For Parkinson's Disease: An Investigation Of Post-Surgical Self-Regulation And Executive Functioning, Hannah L. Combs Jan 2016

Deep Brain Stimulation For Parkinson's Disease: An Investigation Of Post-Surgical Self-Regulation And Executive Functioning, Hannah L. Combs

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that attacks the basal ganglia and contributes to a range of motor, cognitive, and behavioral impairments (e.g., tremor, rigidity, and executive dysfunction). This dysfunction may contribute to self-regulatory impairment across several domains, including cognitive skills, thought processes, and emotion. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that allows for direct and reversible manipulation of brain activity in patients with PD. The procedure is growing in popularity and is commonly used as an adjunct or in some instances an alternative to dopaminometic medications. Preliminary studies suggest mild executive dysfunction follows DBS but …

Loss Aversion In Cocaine Users: Influence Of Risk And Commodity Type, Justin Charles Strickland Jan 2016

Loss Aversion In Cocaine Users: Influence Of Risk And Commodity Type, Justin Charles Strickland

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Numerous studies in behavioral economics have demonstrated that individuals are more sensitive to the prospect of a loss than a gain (i.e., loss aversion). Although loss aversion has been well described in healthy populations, little research exists in individuals with substance use disorders. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively evaluate loss aversion in cocaine users. Participants completed measures designed to assess loss aversion for drug and non-drug commodities under varying risk conditions. Cocaine demand was determined using a cocaine purchase task. Cocaine users showed a loss aversion score that was consistent across commodity and risk conditions. Compared to …

Imc: Its Rhetorical And Philosophical Foundation And Impact, Allison Raemore Peiritsch Jan 2016

Imc: Its Rhetorical And Philosophical Foundation And Impact, Allison Raemore Peiritsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A review of current integrated marketing communication (IMC) literature indicates that IMC has swept the globe. IMC has become the normative marketing practice for organizations to promote their goods and services, as well as an increasingly popular area of academic study. At the same time, literature shows inconsistency in IMC's professional practice and academic instruction. An increasing number of IMC theorists suggest that "true" IMC involves reorienting an organization to become consumer-focused and responsive at every level. This broader vision for IMC points to the discipline's communicative underpinnings. It is dialogic, other-oriented and interpretive in nature, yet most organizations and …

Current college student hassles, resilience, and perceived social support also significantly predicted mental health. The study revealed that ACEs had …

Interpersonal Approach To Dementia: An Ipad-Based Program For Caregiver Education And Decreasing Problem Behaviors In Older Adults With Cognitive Impairments, Anna Olexsovich Jan 2016

Interpersonal Approach To Dementia: An Ipad-Based Program For Caregiver Education And Decreasing Problem Behaviors In Older Adults With Cognitive Impairments, Anna Olexsovich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Overall Problem

More than 10 million family members care for an older adult with dementia in the community. Due to the progressive nature of dementia, a high burden of care is placed on caregivers. Adult day centers offer respite, but while providing families temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities, they do not emphasize interventions for individuals with dementia. Agitation, a symptom of dementia, can affect both the older adult and others around them negatively. When the caregivers of older adults with dementia receive proper education about interacting with and caring for someone with this progressive disease, the quality of life of …

Disabling Psychology: A Crip Analysis Of Deaf And Blind Psychotherapists In Practice, Kathryn Irene Wagner Jan 2016

Disabling Psychology: A Crip Analysis Of Deaf And Blind Psychotherapists In Practice, Kathryn Irene Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the phenomenological experience of d/Deaf or blind psychotherapists who work with nondisabled clients, seeking to understand the perceived impact of disability on the therapeutic relationship. There is an abundance of research on nondisabled therapists treating disabled clients but only a handful of studies qualitatively considering the disabled therapist’s understanding of practicing in a largely ableist world. Six deaf and eight blind therapists were interviewed for this dissertation. Results were qualitatively analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results were also interpreted through a critical disability studies framework with an eye toward challenging the ableism embedded within traditional research …

Smoke & Mirrors: Bankruptcy Relief Remains Elusive For Marijuana Businesses And Their Creditors, Todd Plummer Jan 2016

Smoke & Mirrors: Bankruptcy Relief Remains Elusive For Marijuana Businesses And Their Creditors, Todd Plummer

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Today, twenty-three states and the District of Columbia allow marijuana for medical purposes, and four of those states and the District of Columbia have legalized the drug’s recreational use. Despite this tidal shift in state laws and public opinion, marijuana remains a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (“CSA”), meaning the federal government does not recognize its use in medical treatment, classifies the drug as having a high potential for abuse, and that no prescriptions may be written for it. Moreover, the CSA specifically makes it illegal to “rent, lease, profit from or make available for use” …

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The present study investigated why communities differing in culture and resources are willing and able to implement gun confiscation as part of a protective order. Specifically, this study explored whether the perceived risk of intimate partner homicide and gun violence, benefits to engaging in gun confiscation, barriers to gun confiscation, community norms about guns, and community readiness to implement gun confiscation: (a) differ in urban and rural communities, (b) are perceived differently by victim service and justice system key professionals within urban and rural communities, and (c) are related to if a community is able and willing to consistently implement …

Decision-Making Processes, Driving Performance, And Acute Responses To Alcohol In Dui Offenders, Walter Roberts Jan 2016

Decision-Making Processes, Driving Performance, And Acute Responses To Alcohol In Dui Offenders, Walter Roberts

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Alcohol-impaired driving is a major cause of motor vehicle accident and death in the United States. People who are arrested for DUI (Driving under the Influence) are at high risk to reoffend; approximately one in three of these individuals will commit another DUI offense in the three years following their first conviction (Nochajski & Stasiewicz, 2006). This high risk for recidivism in these individuals suggests that cognitive characteristics may contribute to a pattern of pathological decision making leading to impaired driving. Indeed, individuals with a history of DUI report higher rates of impulsiveness and behavioral dysregulation compared to their nonoffending …

Selective Issues In Effective Medicaid Estate Recovery Statutes, Raymond C. O'Brien Jan 2016

Selective Issues In Effective Medicaid Estate Recovery Statutes, Raymond C. O'Brien

Scholarly Articles

Medicaid is a joint federal-state partnership program that provides medical care to the elderly, blind, and disabled poor. Unlike Medicare, Medicaid will pay for long-term care, leading millions of persons in need of such care to “spend-down” income or assets to qualify as sufficiently needy or poor. However, the state can eventually seek recovery of expenditures made through estate recovery programs following the death of both spouses. As it currently stands, states have no choice but to become increasingly vigilant in pursuing private funds in order to pay for Medicaid expenditures. As a result, elderly citizens and their families will …
