The Glass Cage: The Gender Pay Gap And Self-Employment In The United States, Leanna Lawter, Tuvana Rua, Jeanine K. Andreassi Ph.D.
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Self-employment is often viewed as a more desirable work arrangement than working as an employee for a firm. Women are pushed into self-employment due to organizational factors, such as a shrinking workforce or limited job opportunities, while being attracted to self-employment by the many psychological and social benefits (e.g., independence, flexibility, work-life balance, job satisfaction). Despite more women moving into self-employment, this type of employment still has different financial consequences for men and women. This article investigates whether a pay gap exists for self-employed women after controlling for industry, occupation, and hours worked and seeks to quantify the gender wage …

Academic inquiry into entrepreneurial phenomena has had a rich history over several decades and continues to evolve. This editorial draws attention to the classics: seminal articles that make profound contributions to the development of an academic field in entrepreneurship studies. We focus on the formative years of entrepreneurship research, specifically the 1970s and 1980s, to identify classics using a key informant approach that surveys members of the journal editorial board. Each nominated classic is introduced and discussed by an editorial board member, with particular focus on research opportunities that may be pursued going forward. Analyzing classics allows for the recognition …

Displaced But Not Without Place: Refugee And Immigrant Integration Experiences In Greeley, Colorado, Rebekah Natalie Marsh
Displaced But Not Without Place: Refugee And Immigrant Integration Experiences In Greeley, Colorado, Rebekah Natalie Marsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis research focuses on the integration experiences of refugees and immigrants in Greeley, Colorado and the corresponding actions and reactions of local Greeley members and leaders who are involved with this population. This thesis explains how the political, industrial and economic needs of the historical sugar beet and current meat packing industries shaped and are shaping the segregated landscape of Greeley. This in turn shapes the integration experiences for the refugees and immigrants and local members of Greeley. These industries historically recruited undocumented Mexican laborers to fill high turnover manual labor jobs. Now, the JBS meat packing plant is …

Utilizing Adr In Domestic Adoptions For Same-Sex Couples, Nicole Hertzberg
Utilizing Adr In Domestic Adoptions For Same-Sex Couples, Nicole Hertzberg
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This Note addresses the intricacies involved in same-sex couples, now legally married, overcoming state-placed legal obstacles in order to adopt children. The simple answer is to wait and see what the Supreme Court has to say about same-sex adoption. However, it is more complicated than that. Firstly, it took two years for Obergefell to reach the Supreme Court from the District Court, and it took this country two hundred and thirty nine years to legalize same-sex marriage. In other words, it might be years until the Supreme Court addresses this issue. Secondly, if this issue is litigated in court, the …

"Boys Will Be Boys, And Girls Will Get Raped": How Public School Dress Codes Foster Modern Day Rape Culture, Stephan Wah
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note argues that public school dress codes perpetuate rape culture by disproportionately targeting female students, reinforcing patriarchal norms, and contributing to gender-based discrimination. These dress codes, often justified as preventing distractions, instead shame girls and place the responsibility of boys' behavior on them, thereby normalizing the objectification of women and supporting systemic sexism.
Working Towards The Welfare Of Our Children: An Argument For A Rebuttable Presumption Against Awarding Abusers Custody And Other Non-Legislative Proposals, Sapna Kishnani
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the intersection of domestic violence and child custody determinations, highlighting the challenges faced by victims and the legal system in balancing the best interests of the child with the risks posed by abusive parents. It critiques the discretionary nature of the "best interests of the child" standard and proposes adopting Delaware’s rebuttable presumption against granting custody to perpetrators of domestic violence, while retaining New York’s preponderance of evidence standard. The analysis emphasizes the need for systematic approaches to child testimony and mediation to protect children’s well-being and ensure just outcomes.

This Article argues that the conventional narrative about the decline of Lochnerism and the rise of mid-century substantive due process jurisprudence is incomplete. That narrative focuses initially on how the premises underlying Lochner’s conception of economic freedom were rejected. The Article instead focuses on how the labor movement articulated an alternative conception of freedom that was adopted by Congress, the Executive, and the Supreme Court. While Lochnerism was premised on a negative view of freedom, the labor movement articulated a positive view of freedom and analogized it to republican freedom of association in the political sphere. Exploring The Federal Arbitration Act Through The Lens Of History Symposium, Imre Stephen Szalai
Journal of Dispute Resolution
The United States Arbitration Act (known today as the Federal Arbitration Act, or FAA) is a relatively short and deceptively cryptic statute. The heart of the statute, section 2, is one sentence, and this key provision simply declares that arbitration agreements are generally “valid, irrevocable, and enforceable.” There is not much traditional legislative history surrounding this statute because much of the development of the bill that became the FAA occurred through organizations outside of Congress, like the American Bar Association and the New York Chamber of Commerce.3 As a result, to understand the FAA at a deeper level, it is …

Robbing The Cradle: The Use Of Mediation In Parental Rights Termination With Evidence Of Drug Abuse By The Mother, M. Katherine Kerbs
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This Comment will explore the use of mediation in termination of parental rights proceedings where there is evidence of drug abuse by the parents. First, this Comment will give an overview of termination proceedings and examine a specific statute’s guidelines for termination. Then, this Comment will provide an overview of mediation and its uses in family law. Finally, this Comment will argue for increased use of mediation in termination of parental rights cases where there is evidence of drug abuse by the mother.

Four different market classes of peanut (Runner, Virginia, Spanish, and Valencia) are commonly consumed in Western countries, but for some consumers peanuts are a main cause of food-induced anaphylaxis. Limited information is available on the comparative allergenicity of these distinct market classes. The aim of this study was to compare allergenicity attributes of different peanut cultivars. The protein content and protein profiles were highly comparable for all tested cultivars. All cultivar samples contained the major allergens Ara h 1, Ara h 2, Ara h 3 and Ara h 6, as assessed by SDS-PAGE and RP-HPLC, although some minor differences in …

Mycoplasma (M.) hyosynoviae is known to colonize and cause disease in growing-finishing pigs. In this study, two clinical isolates of M. hyosynoviae were compared by inoculating cesarean-derived colostrum-deprived and specific-pathogen-free growing pigs. After intranasal or intravenous inoculation, the proportion and distribution pattern of clinical cases was compared in addition to the severity of lameness. Tonsils were found to be the primary site of colonization, while bacteremia was rarely detected prior to the observation of clinical signs. Regardless of the clinical isolate, route of inoculation, or volume of inocula, histopathological alterations and tissue invasion were detected in multiple …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Background: The Molavi street archeological site south of Tehran, Iran accidentally provided a unique opportunity for paleoparasitological studies in Iran. A female skeleton was unearthed and evaluated to be 7,000 years old. Soil samples were collected around the pelvic and sacrum bones.
Findings: Careful microscopic investigation of rehydrated soil samples revealed the presence of one Enterobius vermicularis egg attached to the skeleton sacral region.
Conclusion: The present finding likely represents the oldest evidence of a human pinworm infection in Asia.
A Nurse's Perception Of Hand-Off Communication Before And After Utilization Of The I-5 Verification Of Information Tool, Maryann Bowersox
A Nurse's Perception Of Hand-Off Communication Before And After Utilization Of The I-5 Verification Of Information Tool, Maryann Bowersox
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Miscommunication or omission of critical patient information contributes to preventable
medical errors that result in 98,000 patient deaths each year. The hand-off
communication process creates a critical time for the patient as necessary information for
the continuity of care must be communicated. The purpose of this practice project was to
evaluate the nurses' perception of the current hand-off communication process before and
after an educational intervention and implementation of the I-5 Verification of
Information Tool. Registered nurses were asked to complete a pre survey of their
perception of the current hand-off communication process, followed by an educational
power point …
Adult Learning-Focused Professional Development For Dental Hygiene Clinical Instructors, Meghan Ann Mcguinness
Adult Learning-Focused Professional Development For Dental Hygiene Clinical Instructors, Meghan Ann Mcguinness
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
At a dental hygiene program within a community college in New York State, clinical instructors are hired based on their expertise as practitioners. Most clinical instructors lack a background in adult learning theory and practice, which is an issue because their students are adult learners whose average age is 26. The instructors' lack of knowledge in this area challenges their effectiveness. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore dental hygiene instructors' views about what kind of professional development offerings related to adult learning might help improve their teaching effectiveness. The conceptual framework for this project study was …

Facilitators And Barriers To Physical Activity Among People With Spinal Cord Injury, Laura Nicole Richardson-Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research has shown that people with physical disabilities are at risk for developing secondary health conditions. Many of these secondary health conditions may be reduced by engaging in physical activity, yet people with physical disabilities are less likely to participate in physical activity. Information gaps remain regarding facilitators and barriers to physical activity. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the experiences with physical activity among adults with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Research questions asked were about exercise experiences, barriers and facilitators, and the role of the natural and social environment. The theoretical framework used was the …
The Effects Of Maturational Variation On The Performance Of Young Australian Footballers And Their Selection Into The Australian Football League's Talent Pathway, Ashley Cripps
Theses
Traditional player development pathways share a common goal, to identify and accelerate the development of talented adolescent players for senior competition. Players who gain selection into development programs gain greater access to experienced coaches, training facilities, support staff and competition. However, despite such advantages, research has shown that few players who gain initial selection into development pathways progress into professional senior competition. A major factor which potentially contributes to poor player retention in development pathways is the initial misidentification of talented athletes due to variations in biological maturity.
Earlier maturing individuals have been shown to be at a physical advantage …
