Creating Sustainable Models For Short-Term Volunteers Through The Global Health Service Partnership, James Scott, +Several Additional Authors

Emergency Medicine Faculty Posters and Presentations

Thirty-one countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have a critical shortage of health care professionals. Subsequently, African medical schools are increasing enrollment, thus increasing demand on limited faculty. Simultaneously, US medical residents’ interest in global health is increasing and training programs are seeking ways to provide high quality experiences while also contributing to the host country health system. Recently published guidelines outlined key factors in successful global health training partnerships: structured programs, mutual benefits, long-term relationships, on-site mentorship, and trainee preparation. Partnerships between US academic institutions, GHSP, and SSA institutions create meaningful and sustainable ways of enabling residents and faculty across …

A Rare Case Report Of Spontaneous Resolution Of Hepatic Portal Venous Gas Associated With Cocaine‑Induced Intestinal Ischemia, H. Patel, H. Shaaban, Nihar Shah Md, W. Baddoura

Gastroenterology

Hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) is a rare disease entity. It is an ominous finding, usually, associated with intraabdominal ischemic necrosis. It frequently requires emergent surgical intervention. Herein, we present a case of a patient who complained of intense abdominal pain, with radiographic findings of HPVG as a result of cocaine-induced vascular insufficiency. After 5 h of nonoperative and conservative management, the HPVG spontaneously resolved. The patient clinically improved and was discharged home in a stable condition.

Importance And Value Of Hiv Education Amongst Dental Hygiene Student Providers, Shawndell Bowers Nov 2016

Importance And Value Of Hiv Education Amongst Dental Hygiene Student Providers, Shawndell Bowers

Dental Hygiene ETDs

Persons living with HIV have an increased risk of complications and manifestations that may include the oral cavity. They are also more susceptible to dental implications such as dental decay and periodontal disease. Their oral health management is dependent on capable dental providers that understand and comprehend their specific needs. Those providers must also demonstrate ethical and clinical competence in order to provide comprehensive care. Preparing capable dental hygiene providers is essential to their long-term management of their oral health. These foundational skills are developed during their academic years and therefore, this qualitative survey was aimed at gaining student perceived …

Impact Of Medication Access On Hgba1c Levels For The Uninsured With Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Konnie M. Doyle

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to determine if not having a prescription patient assistance program (PAP) has an effect on HgbA1c levels in the uninsured with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) enrolled at a community-based free clinic.

Background: If the uninsured patient has no access to a prescription PAP adherence to an evidence-based-practice (EBP) medication regimen could be compromised and result in high glucose levels leading to DM2 sequelae and a fiscal impact on the health care system.

Methods: Subjects, n = 14, were uninsured DM2 patients currently enrolled in a free clinic, ages 18 – 64 …

Human Capital Development In Socio-Economic Malaise: Evidence From The Uk, T Nawaz Nov 2016

Human Capital Development In Socio-Economic Malaise: Evidence From The Uk, T Nawaz

Plymouth Business School

The purpose of this paper is to provide a novel insight into the role of knowledge-resources, particularly human capital, in times of socio-economic distress using a qualitative research approach. This is required because the social and economic environment has been transformed significantly in certain regions such as Europe since the global financial crisis humped in the fall of 2008. The study reveals how knowledge resources interact in building knowledge-eco society, how human intellectual capital thrives under tough economic conditions, and how human capital may help an economy to sustain its fiscal position.

Bartelt-Hunt, Mitiku Mamo, David D. Tarkalson, Tian C. Zhang, David P. Shelton, Simon J. Van Donk, Terry L. Mader

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Runoff generated from livestock manure amended row crop fields is one of the major pathways of hormone transport to the aquatic environment. The study determined the effects of manure handling, tillage methods, and rainfall timing on the occurrence and transport of steroid hormones in runoff from the row crop field. Stockpiled and composted manure from hormone treated and untreated animals were applied to test plots and subjected to two rainfall simulation events 30 days apart. During the two rainfall simulation events, detection of any steroid hormone or metabolites was identified in 8–86% of runoff samples from any tillage and manure …

Greenwashing In Islamic Finance? An Analysis Of Islamic Private Banks' Non-Financial Reports And A Proposal For An Islamic Finance Reporting Initiative Standard, Stefan Leins, Peter Seele, Franziska Vogel Nov 2016

Greenwashing In Islamic Finance? An Analysis Of Islamic Private Banks' Non-Financial Reports And A Proposal For An Islamic Finance Reporting Initiative Standard, Stefan Leins, Peter Seele, Franziska Vogel

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008, Islamic finance has been subject to a number of intriguing debates. While evidence suggests that Islamic private banks got through the imponderabilities of the financial crisis more easily than conventional banks, Islamic finance has been criticized by some as incapable of performing the functions of modern banking. Moreover, there has been a debate among academics as well as among practitioners whether Islamic finance indeed represents a new faith-based form of banking or whether it represents just a conventional way of banking that is based on the use of religious terminology. Against …

In training to be an accountant, Jacqueline D. Lyon (’93) of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., learned how to keep track of every penny. Those same analytical skills help her uncover clues and track down criminals as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). “My brain is wired differently.
