Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Background: Data extraction tools (DETs) are increasingly being used for research and audit of general practice, despite their limitations.
Objective: This study explores the accuracy of Pap smear rates obtained with a DET compared to that of the Pap smear rate obtained with a manual file audit.
Method: A widely available DET was used to establish the rate of Pap smears in a large multi-general practice (multi-GP) in regional New South Wales followed by a manual audit of patient files. The main outcome measure was identification of possible discrepancies between the rates established.
Results: The DET used significantly underestimated the …
Between Scylla And Charybdis: Taxing Corporations Or Shareholders (Or Both), David M. Schizer
Between Scylla And Charybdis: Taxing Corporations Or Shareholders (Or Both), David M. Schizer
Faculty Scholarship
The United States taxes both corporations and shareholders on corporate profits. In principle, the United States could rely on only one of these taxes, as many commentators have suggested. Although choosing to tax the corporation or its owners may seem like taking money from one pocket or the other, this Essay emphasizes a key difference: These taxes prompt different planning. Relying on one or the other mitigates some distortions and leaks, while exacerbating others. As a result, choosing which to impose is like navigating between Scylla and Charybdis.
In response, this Essay recommends using both taxes for three reasons. First, …

Rule Originalism, Jamal Greene
Rule Originalism, Jamal Greene

Constitutional rules are norms whose application depends on an interpreter's identification of a set of facts rather than on her exercise of practical judgment. This Article argues that constitutional interpreters in the United States tend to resolve ambiguity over constitutional rules by reference to originalist sources and tend to resolve uncertainty over the scope of constitutional standards by reference to nonoriginalist sources. This positive claim unsettles the frequent assumption that the Constitution's more specifw or structural provisions support straightforward interpretive inferences. Normatively, this Article offers a partial defense of what it calls "rule originalism," grounded in the fact of its …

Insufficient liquidity can trigger fire sales and wreak havoc on a financial system. To address these challenges, the Federal Reserve (the Fed) and other central banks have long had the authority to provide financial institutions liquidity when market-based sources run dry. Yet, liquidity injections sometimes fail to quell market dysfunction. When liquidity shortages persist, they are often symptoms of deeper problems plaguing the financial system.
This Essay shows that continually pumping new liquidity into a financial system in the midst of a persistent liquidity shortage may increase the fragility of the system and, on its own, is unlikely to resolve …

The Local Turn; Innovation And Diffusion In Civil Rights Law, Olatunde C.A. Johnson
Faculty Scholarship
Is the future of civil rights subnational? If one is looking for civil rights innovation, much of this innovation might be happening through legislation, regulatory frameworks, and policies adopted by state and local governments. In recent years, states and cities have adopted legislation banning discrimination in housing based on the source of an individual's income, regulating the consideration of arrest or conviction in employment decisions, and prohibiting discrimination in employment based on an applicant's credit history.
This deployment of subnational power is not new to civil rights. Many of the laws and regulatory frameworks that are now core to the …

Background and purpose: Active engagement in intellectually enriching activities (e.g. reading, hobbies) builds 'reserve' against memory decline in elders and persons with multiple sclerosis (MS), but the neural basis for this protective influence of enrichment is unknown. Herein the neuroanatomical basis of reserve against memory decline in MS patients is investigated. Methods: Relapse-onset MS patients (N = 187) underwent 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging of the brain to quantify T2 lesion volume (T2LV) and normalized volumes of total brain, total white, total grey (using SIENAX) and thalamus, caudate, putamen, pallidum, amygdala and hippocampus (using FIRST). Patients completed a survey quantifying …

Mining Novel Knowledge From Biomedical Literature Using Statistical Measures And Domain Knowledge, Kishlay Jha
Mining Novel Knowledge From Biomedical Literature Using Statistical Measures And Domain Knowledge, Kishlay Jha
Computer Science
The problem of inferring novel knowledge from implicit facts by logically connecting independent fragments of literature is known as Literature Based Discovery (LBD). In LBD, to discover hidden links, it is important to determine the relevancy between concepts using appropriate information measures. In this study, to discover interesting and inherent links latent in large corpora, nine distinct methods, comprising variants of statistical information measures and derived semantic knowledge from domain ontology, are designed and compared. A series of experiments are performed and analyzed for those proposed methods. Also, a new strategy of effective preprocessing is proposed, which is capable of …

Business Intelligence (BI) is extremely vital for organizations for delivering useful information from the large volumes of data being collected. There are many BI tools available but no single tool is appropriate for every user’s need. Project needs can differ within and across organizations so a process is needed to determine the right tools to use. If companies end up with the wrong tool their needs and problems are not addressed. This research evaluates five tools from the Microsoft BI stack using an application that has been developed and recommends the best tool to use. The tool recommended depends on …

Health applications are usually complicated and low end devices do not benefit from them. The focus of this thesis is on expandable health services platform for low end cell phones. Large number of mobile phones in the world are incapable using web or modern operating systems and pre-installed SMS application is the preferred communication medium. Moreover, SMS does not require a stable connection so text-based health information can still be available even during natural disasters. Although our platform is accessible through communication forms other than SMS. We propose a scalable platform for light weight health applications, providing novel and proactive …

Systematic Approaches To Improve Test Case Prioritization Using Requirements And Risks, Charitha Sasika Hettiarachchi
Computer Science
The use of system requirements and their risks enables software testers to identify more important test cases that can reveal faults associated with risky components. Having identified important test cases, software testers can manage the testing schedule more effectively by running such test cases earlier so that they can detect then fix faults sooner, especially, in regression testing. Some work in this area has been done, but the previous approaches and studies have some limitations, such as an improper use of requirements risks in prioritization and an inadequate evaluation method. To address the limitations, we implemented a new requirements risk-based …

We formulated a set of questions regarding the effects of GMOs on food products (including both the pre- and post-study questions) and investigated the changes in people’s perceptions …
Macabre Fascination And Moral Propriety: The Attraction Of Horror, Marius A. Pascale
Macabre Fascination And Moral Propriety: The Attraction Of Horror, Marius A. Pascale
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Why does the horror genre serve as a source of pleasure, given its aim to induce fear in the audience? I examine two general solutions to this phenomenon, referred to as the paradox of horror, which differ based upon their position regarding the possibility of deriving pleasure from fear. Each of the possible solutions contains significant flaws. I argue that, by adjusting a meta-theory originally proposed by Susan Feagin, it is possible to craft a solution that addresses the paradox while preserving the idea that, at times, fear can be enjoyed. The article concludes by considering the moral status of …

Human Nature And Aesthetic Ecosystem Services: Nature In The Service Of Humankind And Humankind In The Service Of Nature, Yrjö Sepänmaa
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
The term “ecosystem services” refers to the material and spiritual benefits and goods that we receive from nature, or, in a broad sense, from all kinds of environment. The various forms of such benefits have begun to be called services. Nature serves people by producing the material and spiritual (intangible, non-material) prerequisites for life. This is also the foundation of our aesthetic well-being. Does humankind reciprocally serve nature, or only itself through nature, with the intention of exploiting it? We see when nature suffers or flourishes, and we also observe our own effect on its state. As much as our …
Humor And Enlightenment, Part Ii: The Theory Applied, Peter H. Karlen
Humor And Enlightenment, Part Ii: The Theory Applied, Peter H. Karlen
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
Part I of this article advanced a new theory of humor, the Enlightenment Theory, while contrasting it with other main theories, including the Incongruity, Repression/Relief/Release, and Superiority Theories. The Enlightenment Theory does not contradict these other theories but rather subsumes them. As argued, each of the other theories cannot account for all the aspects of humor explained by the Enlightenment Theory. Part II shows how the Enlightenment Theory meets challenging issues in humor theory where other theories falter, including failed humor, motivation for humor, tickling, laughing gas, and sadistic humor. Also mentioned are the Enlightenment Theory's application to literary and …
