Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt Jan 2016

Counterfeit Industry And The Link To Terrorism, Holly Barbara Holt

Apparel Design and Hospitality Management

The purpose of this research study is to explore whether consumers would be complicit in the purchase of counterfeit goods once becoming aware of the counterfeit industry being linked to terrorism. Counterfeit goods are defined as identical copies of authentic products and they are produced without the permission of the registered owner (Carpenter & Lear, 2011). Almost any product can be counterfeited from clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags and even medicines. Counterfeit products are sold at a fraction of the cost of the authentic product. This study identifies the ‘why’ to consumer complicity to purchase the counterfeit items. There are legalities …

Relational Maintenance Strategies, Positivity, And Constructive Financial Conversations In Romantic, Committed Partnerships, Renee Jeneanne Bourdeaux Jan 2016

Relational Maintenance Strategies, Positivity, And Constructive Financial Conversations In Romantic, Committed Partnerships, Renee Jeneanne Bourdeaux

Communication

Although a large body of research on financial management in marriages and conflict/divorce as outcomes of financial problems exists, the topic of how individuals describe the communicative processes leading to positive outcomes regarding financial conversations remains understudied. Because financial conversations emerge as a strong “tug-of-war” opponent to the successful partnership couples hope to achieve, this study sought to understand how romantic pairs talk about money in ways that lead to positive results. By using an interpretive approach, this study used online, open-ended survey questions to gather stories to better understand how married couples effectively discuss finances. The participant stories explained …

Phatic Communication Use In Employment Interviews: Predicted Outcome Value, Liking, Relational Closeness, And Communication Satisfaction, Jennifer Hanson

Communication

The purpose of this study was to examine phatic communication use in employment interviews and whether or not phatic communication use affects applicant perceptions of the interviewer. A lab experiment was conducted with three conditions: the absence of phatic communication, phatic communication, and phatic communication violation. Ninety-nine participants were interviewed and then they completed a survey that measured predicted outcome value, liking, relational closeness, and communication satisfaction. First, the current data revealed that when interviewers used some kind of phatic interaction, applicants rated the future relationship with the interviewer (i.e., predicted outcome value) positively; when phatic communication was absent, applicants …

Structural Studies Of Becn1, A Key Autophagy Protein, And Intrinsically Disordered Regions In Autophagy Proteins, Yang Mei Jan 2016

Structural Studies Of Becn1, A Key Autophagy Protein, And Intrinsically Disordered Regions In Autophagy Proteins, Yang Mei

Cellular and Molecular Biology

Autophagy, a conserved catabolic process required for cellular homeostasis in eukaryotes, is regulated by many proteins. The central goal of my doctoral research is to investigate conformational flexibility of autophagy proteins, with a special focus on BECN1, a core component of the class III phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase autophagosome nucleation complex that may serve as an autophagy interaction hub. Our rigorous bioinformatics analysis predicts that 57% of 59 key human autophagy proteins contain intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), which lack stable secondary and tertiary structure. The prevalence of IDRs suggests that IDRs play an important, yet hitherto uninvestigated, role in autophagy. We confirm …

Historical And Modern Hard Red Spring Wheat Comparison: Analysis Of Proximate, Enzyme Activity, Phenolic Acid, And Starch Properties, Catherine Suzanne Schwebach Jan 2016

Historical And Modern Hard Red Spring Wheat Comparison: Analysis Of Proximate, Enzyme Activity, Phenolic Acid, And Starch Properties, Catherine Suzanne Schwebach

Cereal Science

Some claim modern wheat is biochemically different from historic wheat and contributes to chronic diseases. This research was necessary to determine if any significant differences existed between historic and modern hard red spring (HRS) wheat in several physical and chemical components. Thirty HRS cultivars were grown in the same year and location and underwent laboratory analysis. In relation to release year, significant (P<0.05) differences were found for ash content (AC), phosphorous, potassium, zinc, arabinose-to-xylose ratio, enzyme activities, and phenolic acids in whole wheat, AC, and α-amylase and xylanase activities in white flour, and total starch in bread. The remaining parameters displayed no significant (P>0.05) differences in correlation to release year, including starch digestibility. The majority of results indicate no significant biochemical variations between the historic and modern HRS cultivars. Parameters that demonstrated differences have the potential to affect consumer health …

The Role Of Algal Species On Phosphorus Bioavailability In Secondary Wastewater Effluents, Mitchell Thomas Swanson Jan 2016

The Role Of Algal Species On Phosphorus Bioavailability In Secondary Wastewater Effluents, Mitchell Thomas Swanson

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Phosphorus (P) is a limiting nutrient responsible for the eutrophication of surface waters and marine coasts. Wastewater treatment technologies are being stressed to achieve low P effluents and national effluent P limits are expected in the coming years. This research investigates how different algae, as individual species and a mixed culture, utilize bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) when examined by the standard algal species Raphidocelis subcapitata along with Chlorella vulgaris and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as additional test species. It also investigates how different P-species contribute to BAP using the standard algal species. Results show there is no significant difference in %(BAP/total dissolved P) …

An Analysis Of Emergent Behavior In The North Dakota Water Depot-Based Water Allocation System Using A Decentralized Agent-Based Modeling (Abm) Approach, Michael Tyler Borders Jan 2016

An Analysis Of Emergent Behavior In The North Dakota Water Depot-Based Water Allocation System Using A Decentralized Agent-Based Modeling (Abm) Approach, Michael Tyler Borders

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Water demand has increased exponentially since 2007 in western North Dakota. This increase can largely be traced to the advancement of technology in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) which has led to one of the largest oil booms in the country. Along with the recent oil boom, water depots have expanded and played a significant role in providing water for fracking. Using decentralized agent-based modeling (ABM) to model water allocation among water depots, a scenario analysis obtains results for four scenarios. Policy suggestions, based on the scenario analysis, include allowing greater access to LSMR water sources and restricting SW and GW use …

The Risks Associated With Barley Production In North Dakota, Bernt Louis Nelson Jan 2016

The Risks Associated With Barley Production In North Dakota, Bernt Louis Nelson

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

The market for barley has shifted from a demand for exports and livestock feed, to a demand for human food and alcohol production. Due to the crop qualities required for malting in the alcohol industry, barley is perceived to be a more financially risky crop to grow in comparison to other crops. Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the distributions of net return to labor and management for barley, hard red spring wheat, corn, soybean, and canola in the primary, North Central, and transitional, Central, crop reporting districts of North Dakota. Stochastic efficiency with respect to a function was …

The population is limited to program participants. Results from a choice experiment …

Effect Of Abnormal Loan Growth On U.S. Credit Union Performance, Dahye Han Jan 2016

Effect Of Abnormal Loan Growth On U.S. Credit Union Performance, Dahye Han

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study examined the relationship between abnormally rapid loan growth and its impacts on U.S. credit union performance during 2007 – 2013. Three hypotheses were developed to test whether and how abnormal loan growth affects default risk, profitability, and solvency in credit unions. This study found that 1) rapidly loaning credit unions had larger average loan loss, smaller average profitability and solvency than normally loaning credit unions; 2) market concentration exhibited a negative and significant impact on default risk, profitability, and solvency; and 3) A size of credit union also exhibited a negative and significant impact on profitability and solvency. …

A Chronosequence Of Scale-Dependent Vegetation And Soil Properties On A Surface Coal Mine Over 40 Years Of Reclamation, Stefanie Bohrer

Range Science

Surface coal mining has taken place in North Dakota for many decades. Upon the mining process, the mined lands need to be reclaimed to a better state than pre-mining. The reclamation process is a timely and costly procedure. Currently, most reclamation strategies focus only on above ground biomass. Our research entailed two different studies, the first looking into vegetative species composition and canopy cover of reclaimed mine lands, and the second focuses on belowground properties affected by soil compaction over a 40 year reclamation gradient. Species composition and canopy cover did not increase over 40 years (p> 0.05). Soil compaction …

In The Wasteland Of Your Mind: Criminology, Scientific Discovieries And The Criminal Process, Michael L. Perlin, Alison Lynch

Articles & Chapters

This paper addresses a remarkably-underconsidered topic: the potential impact of scientific discoveries and an increased understanding of the biology of human behavior on sentencing decisions in the criminal justice system, specifically, the way that sentencing has the capacity to rely on scientific evidence (such as brain imaging) as a mitigating factor (or perhaps, in the mind of some, as an aggravating factor) in determining punishment.

Such a new method of evaluating criminality, we argue, can be beneficial not only for the defendant, but also for the attorneys and judge involved in the case. If used properly, it may help to …
