Beyond England's "Green And Pleasant Land": English Romantics Outside The Musical Renaissance, Christopher Little
Beyond England's "Green And Pleasant Land": English Romantics Outside The Musical Renaissance, Christopher Little
Theses and Dissertations--Music
England experienced a resurgence of musical talent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries known as the "English Musical Renaissance." This rebirth spanned the years 1880 – 1945 and is credited to the work of Edward Elgar, Frederick Delius, Gustav Holst, and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Their break with Continental compositional models and the subsequent rediscovery of Tudor music and English folk song eventually created a "pastoral" musical style, heard as the authentically English musical voice.
A strain of English musical Romanticism continued parallel to the Renaissance, however, represented by Granville Bantock, Joseph Holbrooke, Rutland Boughton, Arnold Bax, and Havergal …

Comparing Textbooks From Entry-Level Courses In Music Therapy And Related Health Professions, Alexandria Langella
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Music therapists often co-treat with other therapists from related professions, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. In order to co-treat effectively and obtain referrals for music therapy services, it is important that other professionals have an awareness of the profession of music therapy. University-level professional training program courses are one place where health care professionals may learn about music therapy. The purpose of this study was to see if required textbooks used in physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology entry-level courses in Kentucky contain references to music therapy, and if the required textbooks used in music therapy …
La Voix Humaine: A Technology Time Warp, Whitney Myers
La Voix Humaine: A Technology Time Warp, Whitney Myers
Theses and Dissertations--Music
In 1959 French composer Francis Poulenc composed the opera La Voix humaine based on Jean Cocteau’s original play (1928). La Voix humaine is a one-act opera for soprano. The main character, Elle, spends the opera on the phone with her ex-lover who is marrying another the next day. Many musicians believe this opera is difficult or impossible to update, due to the use of the telephone and its dated operator system, which is a large aspect of the action and drama.
This document provides the reader with a new interpretation of the opera with modern technology. Chapter One begins with …
Attitudinal Differences Of Choral Music Teachers In Regards To Vocal Change Type, Jill C. Campbell
Attitudinal Differences Of Choral Music Teachers In Regards To Vocal Change Type, Jill C. Campbell
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences exist in secondary choral music teachers’ understandings and attitudes toward sex-specific vocal change and whether these differences vary by virtue of years of teaching experience. Participants (N = 405) were secondary choral music educators and current members on the National Association for Music Education who were surveyed using a researcher-designed attitudinal questionnaire. The survey instrument consisted of 20 questions related to teacher attitude towards sex-specific vocal change. Responses were recorded in using a 7-point Likert-type scale and included two anecdotal responses. Paired-samples t-tests were conducted and revealed that there …

Myelin Disorders And Stem Cells: As Therapies And Models, Fatmagül İlayda Aydinli, Eşref Çeli̇k, Burcu Kurt Vatandaşlar, Bi̇lal Ersen Kerman
Turkish Journal of Biology
Myelin disorders burden millions of people around the world, yet existing therapies are inadequate to cure them. Current remedies commonly treat the symptoms with minimal to no effect on the actual cause of the disorder. The basis and/or the mechanism of demyelination is not known for many of the disorders either. In recent years, stem cells of variable origin have been used in clinical trials as transplant agents to restore the defective biochemical process or the damaged tissue. We summarize the outcomes of these trials for demyelination disorders. The capability of reprograming mature cells into stem cells equips researchers with …
Teachers' Cultural Competence And Students' Perception Of The Social Classroom Climate In Culturally Different Middle School Classrooms, Olivia L. R. Spence
Teachers' Cultural Competence And Students' Perception Of The Social Classroom Climate In Culturally Different Middle School Classrooms, Olivia L. R. Spence
Dissertations
Problem
Teachers and students often come from different cultural backgrounds, so classrooms are increasingly becoming the venue where interactions, if not appropriately managed, will produce a social climate not conducive to learning. The present study seeks to determine to what extent teacher cultural competence impacts student perception of the classroom social environment.
Method
The Teacher Multicultural Attitudes Survey was used to quantify teachers’ cultural competence and a Social Classroom Climate Measure was used to gather scores on the four key factors of the social climate. Hierarchical Linear Modelling was used to assess the influence of teacher cultural competence and several …

A Call To Integrate Neuroscience And Translational Research In Psychopathology: A Literature Review Of The Rdoc And Substance Abuse Disorder, Jaclyn Dell
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
In general medicine, and much more in the treatment of psychiatric illness, one size does not fit all. Expansive breakthroughs in science and medicine have given scientists insight into the biological causes of diseases and disorders heretofore unimaginable until the past several years. Moreover, the field of neuroscience has begun to unravel the complicated networking systems of the human brain, and scientists are slowly beginning to comprehend how humans process the world around them. This has allowed for personalized treatment and improved results in physical health. But what of emotional and mental health? The focus of this review is to …

Hindsight Bias For The 2016 Presidential Election, Christy M. Burke
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Although hindsight bias is a very specific and narrow field of interest, there seems to be conflicting ideologies, results, and theories. Of particular interest for this paper is hindsight bias in regards to the 2016 Presidential Elections. I propose to analyze data collected on an ongoing study by Dr. Mark Pezzo in the Social Judgement Lab. The study asks participants, both before and after, the presidential election to indicate their: political party, preference of candidate, likelihood that the candidate, Donald Trump, would win, estimated percentage of vote that each candidate would receive, and demographic information for research purposes. After the …

Beyond The Self: Identity, Impermanence, And The Meanings Of Life In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Neal Catalano
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
Virginia Woolf’s novels posit a view of a self and world that is constantly in flux. This thesis explores Woolf’s novels Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves, tracing the development of themes such as selfhood, impermanence, and individual meaning, and strives to show how they are presented and intertwined in Woolf’s fiction. The thesis focuses on characters in Woolf’s works and how they strive for balance in their lives between inhabiting a self and being constrained by it. PCOM Psychology Dissertations
Research has shown that peer relationships influence both psychological and academic functioning (Woolley, Kol, & Bowen, 2008; Zimmer-Gembeck & Pronk, 2012). Peer relationships have also been found to be important components of a child’s emotional and behavioral functioning across cultures (Ladd, 1999; Jensen-Campbell & Malcolm, 2007; Parker et al., 2005; Parker & Asher, 1993; La Greca & Harrison, 2006)). However, there is a lack of research on peer relationships in minority youth, specifically Latino youth (Way & Chen, 2000). Despite the far-reaching implications of this syndrome on the lives of children and families, very little is known about the psychosocial aspects of having a child with this syndrome. The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of fathers of children with LQTS …

Perceptions And Attitudes Of A Sample Of Primary Care Patients Receiving Psychological Care From Their Pcp, Nadine Henzes Gowarty
PCOM Psychology Dissertations
With millions of Americans suffering from a mental health disorder and slightly more than half receiving treatment, the demand for psychological services far outweighs the number of practitioners available to provide direct care. Therefore, the majority of all primary-care visits are based on psychosocial factors; one third of a PCP’s caseloads consist of patients with mental-health problems. Given the fact that PCPs provide comprehensive psychosocial care, it is important to determine the beliefs and perceptions of their patients. Results from this study identified numerous factors that influence the relationship between patients receiving mental health care from their PCP. Specifically, if …
