Exploring Molecular Mechanisms Of Paradoxical Activation In The Braf Kinase Dimers: Atomistic Simulations Of Conformational Dynamics And Modeling Of Allosteric Communication Networks And Signaling Pathways, Amanda Tse, Gennady M. Verkhivker Nov 2016

Verkhivker

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The recent studies have revealed that most BRAF inhibitors can paradoxically induce kinase activation by promoting dimerization and enzyme transactivation. Despite rapidly growing number of structural and functional studies about the BRAF dimer complexes, the molecular basis of paradoxical activation phenomenon is poorly understood and remains largely hypothetical. In this work, we have explored the relationships between inhibitor binding, protein dynamics and allosteric signaling in the BRAF dimers using a network-centric approach. Using this theoretical framework, we have combined molecular dynamics simulations with coevolutionary analysis and modeling of the residue interaction networks to determine molecular determinants of paradoxical activation. We …

Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel I. Morales Nov 2016

Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel I. Morales

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy

This essay situates undocumented migrants in the history of the American revolutionary period. The lawbreaking of both groups produced constructive legal and social change. For example, the masses of American revolutionaries and many of their leading men fought to rid the colonies of hereditary aristocracy. Colonists had come to cherish the proto-meritocracy that had bloomed on colonial shores and rankled at local evidence of aristocratic privilege, like the Crown’s grant of landed estates to absentee English aristocrats.

Today’s equivalent hereditary aristocracy is the citizenry of wealthy democracies like the United States. Hereditary citizens use immigration restrictions to reserve the wealth …

Inflammatory Properties Of Diet And Glucose-Insulin Homeostasis In A Cohort Of Iranian Adults, Nazanin Moslehi, Behnaz Ehsani, Parvin Mirmiran, Nitin Shivappa, Maryam Tohidi, James R. Hébert, Fereidoun Azizi

Faculty Publications

We aimed to investigate associations of the dietary inflammatory index (DII) with glucose-insulin homeostasis markers, and the risk of glucose intolerance. This cross-sectional study included 2975 adults from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG), 2-h post-load glucose (2h-PG), and fasting serum insulin were measured. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) and β-cell function (HOMA-B), and the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) were calculated. Glucose tolerance abnormalities included impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and type 2 diabetes (T2DM). DII scores were positively associated with 2h-PG (β = 0.04; p = 0.05). …

Current Antibiotics And Future Herbal Extract Methods To Treat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa): Focusing On Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2a (Pbp2a), Mgayya R. Makullah Nov 2016

Current Antibiotics And Future Herbal Extract Methods To Treat Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (Mrsa): Focusing On Inhibition Of Penicillin-Binding Protein 2a (Pbp2a), Mgayya R. Makullah

Senior Honors Theses

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has developed resistance towards a number of antibiotics. This resistance creates a challenge when trying to treat MRSA with a number of antibiotics. This is mainly caused by the penicillin-binding proteins 2a (PBP2a). PBP2a have significantly less affinity for beta-lactam antibiotics compared to the other penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) expressed by non-resistant strains. New treatments involving a combination of antibiotics and herbal extracts are being developed and used to inactivate PBP2a, allowing the previous ineffective antibiotics to be more effective.

Influence Of Posture-Cuing Shirt On Tennis Serve Kinematics In Division Iii Tennis Players, Joseph Zappala, Caroline Orrego, Emily Boe, Heather Fechner, Derek Salminen, Daniel Cipriani

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Objective: Injuries to the shoulder complex are common in overhead athletes, often related to kinematics of the shoulder complex. This study evaluated the influence of a posture-cuing shirt on internal rotation velocity of the shoulder during a tennis swing and to determine this influence on shoulder external rotation position. Methods: Nine healthy competitive college tennis players from a Division III college participated in this study. High speed motion capture allowed for 3-D analysis of shoulder kinematics during a tennis serve. Two conditions were evaluated while the athletes performed a high velocity tennis serve: standard tennis shirt and a …

Impact Of Health Insurance For The Poor On Labor Market Out Comes: Evidence From Indonesia., Youssef Fassi Fehri Nov 2016

Impact Of Health Insurance For The Poor On Labor Market Out Comes: Evidence From Indonesia., Youssef Fassi Fehri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I examine the impact of a health insurance program for the poor implemented in Indonesia in 2005 on labor supply and informal work measured by employment status outside of the private and public formal sector. As a first step to its ambitious plan for universal coverage, this program extended subsidized health insurance coverage to a large proportion of Indonesia’s poor and near-poor population. Using a rich longitudinal survey, I estimate the average treatment effect on the treated using a combined propensity score matching method with difference in differences. The richness of the data allows me to control for a set …

Human Attention Detection Using Am-Fm Representations, Wenjing Shi Nov 2016

Human Attention Detection Using Am-Fm Representations, Wenjing Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Human activity detection from digital videos presents many challenges to the computer vision and image processing communities. Recently, many methods have been developed to detect human activities with varying degree of success. Yet, the general human activity detection problem remains very challenging, especially when the methods need to work “in the wild” (e.g., without having precise control over the imaging geometry). The thesis explores phase-based solutions for (i) detecting faces, (ii) back of the heads, (iii) joint detection of faces and back of the heads, and (iv) whether the head is looking to the left or the right, using standard …

Locally Optimized Mapping Of Slum Conditions In A Sub-Saharan Context: A Case Study Of Bamenda, Cameroon, Julius Anchang Nov 2016

Locally Optimized Mapping Of Slum Conditions In A Sub-Saharan Context: A Case Study Of Bamenda, Cameroon, Julius Anchang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite being an indicator of modernization and macro-economic growth, urbanization in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa is tightly interwoven with poverty and deprivation. This has manifested physically as slums, which represent the worst residential urban areas, marked by lack of access to good quality housing and basic services. To effectively combat the slum phenomenon, local slum conditions must be captured in quantitative and spatial terms. However, there are significant hurdles to this. Slum detection and mapping requires readily available and reliable data, as well as a proper conceptualization of measurement and scale. Using Bamenda, Cameroon, as a test case, this …

Secondary Analysis Of Concussion Data, Martin Zwick, Stephanie Kolakowsky-Hayner, Nancy Carney, Maya Balamane, Tracie Nettleton, D. Wright

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

Clinical studies are expensive & time-consuming. Typically in these studies specific hypotheses are subjected to confirmatory test. Yet the data may harbor evidence of unanticipated relations between variables. It is thus desirable to subject the data to secondary analyses in the hope of discovering novel & valuable associations. Exploratory analysis, however, is tentative: findings should be replicated in new data. This presentation reports some secondary analyses on concussion data. Data mining on 2 datasets will be discussed, & some unexpected findings reported. The analyses use reconstructability analysis (RA), a probabilistic graphical modeling method implemented in the Occam software package developed …

Space Analysis And Research Centers (Sparcs) For Ssa Data And Analytics, Phillip Cunio, Brien Flewelling Nov 2016

Space Analysis And Research Centers (Sparcs) For Ssa Data And Analytics, Phillip Cunio, Brien Flewelling

Space Traffic Management Conference

Widespread use of massive data and increasing reliance on spaceborne infrastructure are two of the emerging megatrends of the early 21st century. However, both come with liabilities: movement and processing of large data volumes is very expensive, and reliance on spaceborne infrastructure adds risk that problems in the still incompletely-understood space domain might cause work disruptions.

ExoAnalytic proposes the use of Space Analysis and Research Centers (SpARCs) as a way to begin addressing both these issues. A SpARC is a facility which integrates volumes of data collected on satellites, centrally analyzes it, and makes available resulting useful information. The …
