A Multilevel Exploration Of The Role Of Student Health Centers In Addressing Campus Sexual Violence, Valerie A. Halstead

Open Access Dissertations

The prevalence of sexual violence (SV) within the college population is alarmingly high. Experiences of SV may lead to numerous negative academic, physical, and psychological consequences. Recent calls to action emphasize the importance that universities address this serious public health concern. The overall purpose of this dissertation is to explore the role of student health centers (SHCs) in addressing campus SV. This dissertation has three main aims: (1) to examine current research literature on SV in the college undergraduate student population with a specific focus on student disclosure and campus resources and services, (2) to describe SV practices of SHCs …

The Effect Of A Music-Movement Intervention On Arousal And Cognitive Flexibility In Older Adults With And Without Mild Neurocognitive Disorder, Carolyn Dana Dachinger Nov 2016

The Effect Of A Music-Movement Intervention On Arousal And Cognitive Flexibility In Older Adults With And Without Mild Neurocognitive Disorder, Carolyn Dana Dachinger

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a music-movement intervention (MMI) on cognitive flexibility and arousal in older adults with typical cognitive aging (TCA) or with symptoms of mild neurocognitive disorder (MND). This study also examined the relationships among participants’ demographics, including age, exercise frequency, and years of music participation, and the dependent variables of cognitive flexibility, perceived arousal, physiological arousal, and perceived exertion. Previous research and current theory suggests that multimodal interventions combining simultaneous physical activity and cognitive training may be an effective avenue for enhancing older adults’ cognition. Moreover, theory suggests that participation in …

Geographically-Weighted Regression Of Knowledge And Behaviour Determinants To Anti-Malarial Recommending And Dispensing Practice Among Medicine Retailers In Western Kenya: Capacitating Targeted Interventions, Andria Rusk, Linda Highfield, J. Michael Wilkerson, Melissa Harrell, Andrew Obala, Benjamin Amick Nov 2016

Geographically-Weighted Regression Of Knowledge And Behaviour Determinants To Anti-Malarial Recommending And Dispensing Practice Among Medicine Retailers In Western Kenya: Capacitating Targeted Interventions, Andria Rusk, Linda Highfield, J. Michael Wilkerson, Melissa Harrell, Andrew Obala, Benjamin Amick

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Background

Most patients with malaria seek treatment first in retail drug shops. Myriad studies have examined retailer behaviours and characteristics to understand the determinants to these behaviours. Geospatial methods are helpful in discovering if geographic location plays a role in the relationship between determinants and outcomes. This study aimed to discover if spatial autocorrelation exists in the relationship between determinants and retailer behaviours, and to provide specific geographic locations and target behaviours for tailoring future interventions.

Methods

Retailer behaviours and characteristics captured from a survey deployed to medicine retailers in the Webuye Demographic and Health Surveillance Site were analysed using …

The Challenge Of Climate Change Adaptation For Agriculture: An Economically Oriented Review, Bruce A. Mccarl, Anastasia W. Thayer, Jason P. H. Jones

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

Climate change is occurring. Deviations from historic temperatures and precipitation plus increased frequency of extreme events are modifying agriculture systems globally. Adapting agricultural management practices offers a way to lessen the effects or exploit opportunities. Herein many aspects of the adaptation issue are discussed, including needs, strategies, observed actions, benefits, economic analysis approaches, role of public/private actors, limits, and project evaluation. We comment on the benefits and shortcomings of analytical methods and suggested economic efforts. Economists need to play a role in such diverse matters as projecting adaptation needs, designing adaptation incentives, and evaluating projects to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.

A Note From A Naive, Soft-Hearted Liberal, Katia Rubinstein Nov 2016

A Note From A Naive, Soft-Hearted Liberal, Katia Rubinstein

SURGE

“I’m voting for Trump,” my step-dad announced this summer. Through and through he is Republican, but his backing of Trump still shocked me.

When I asked him why, he said that he thought Trump could bring change while Clinton would only bring the status quo. He wanted, in fewer words, to “Make America Great Again.”

When I provided him with Hitler’s speeches and Goebbels’s propaganda, comparing the threats made to the Jews with those made to undocumented immigrants today, he brushed it off. “It’ll never happen,” he said with a shrug. When I replied with the sentiment of concern, explaining …

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond Nov 2016

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by

Shawn E. Raymond

Medication cost is a major contributor for patient medication nonadherence. Take in the fact that a large population lives in poverty, many cannot afford to pay the retail prices associated with purchasing their medications. By incorporating wholesale medications into a charitable health clinic, the reduced cost of medications for treatment of both acute and chronic illnesses could be passed on to those in need thereby decreasing cost associated medication nonadherence. Nurse Practitioners in the state of Kansas are not afforded the privilege to purchase, repackage and distribute or resell wholesale …

Secretory Paraspinal Paraganglioma Of Thoracolumar Spine: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Saad Akhtar, Sidra Sattar, Muhammad Ehsan Bari, Naila Kayani, Sarosh Moeen

Section of Neurosurgery

Background: Pheochromocytomas are catecholamine secreting tumors of the adrenal medulla chromaffin cells, however, when present extra-adrenally they are called paragangliomas. Paragangliomas rarely produce catecholamine in excess, which is evident by clinical symptoms, urine, and blood biochemistry. Total resection of these tumors can lead to complete clinical and biochemical resolution. This case report presents the clinical features, radiological findings, and neurological outcome in a middle-aged female with a secretory paraganglioma.
Case description: We present the case of a 34-year-old female who presented with a 2-year history of dizziness, flushing, headache, palpitations, and hypertension. Her blood workup showed raised urinary catecholamine levels. …

The Non-Contractual Nature Of Privacy Policies And A New Critique Of The Notice And Choice Privacy Protection Model, Thomas B. Norton Nov 2016

The Non-Contractual Nature Of Privacy Policies And A New Critique Of The Notice And Choice Privacy Protection Model, Thomas B. Norton

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Notice and Choice is the model for protecting privacy online in the United States. Under the model, users of online services are given notice about services information and privacy practices in the form of privacy policies. Based on this information, users can choose whether to use particular online services and whether to exercise any options for protecting their privacy that the services might offer. In theory, Notice and Choice seems like a sound regulatory mechanism. Indeed, state and federal regulatory agencies prefer the model as a basis for privacy enforcement action. But Notice and Choice faces harsh criticism from privacy …
