Abstract There are indications of a marked and growing move towards less adversarial approaches to justice for child protection cases in the English and Welsh family court. This article explores the advantages and some challenges of such a move, and some implications for the legal system and social work working as part of a wider system for protecting children from harm.

Maps Of Intimate And Institutional Change In Merle Collins’S Angel And Oonya Kempadoo’S Tide Running, Clare M. Sigrist Dec 2016

Maps Of Intimate And Institutional Change In Merle Collins’S Angel And Oonya Kempadoo’S Tide Running, Clare M. Sigrist

Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal

This article reads Merle Collins’s Angel and Oonya Kempadoo’s Tide Running for their narration of social transformations within their characters lived experience. Comparing these two different novels allows this paper to think change both within and beyond the dramatic moments of revolutionary change and against theories of change that primarily limit themselves to large structural forces, such as sex tourism and the U.S. media, and their effects. I propose Angel acts as a map of and toward social transformation, while Tide Running acts as an anti-map, a source of disorientation that prompts better wayfinding. Through the family structure Angel critiques …

Safety Culture And Fall Prevention: A Collaborative Effort, Cecilia Cortina

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Patient falls in the United States (US) range from 700,000 to one million annually and one third of those falls can be prevented (Du Pree, Fritz-Campiz & Musbeno, 2014). Twenty to 30% of falls are moderate to severe (Schimke & Schimke, 2014). As of 2009, The Joint Commission’s (TJC) (2015) Sentinel Event databank held 465 reports of hospital falls with injury; deaths that resulted in those injuries were reported as 63 percent. Common denominators resulting in patient falls with injury are poor assessment, lack of communication, failure to follow protocols, insufficient training and supervision, staffing levels, unsafe environments and lack …

Minority College Women’S Views On Condom Negotiation, Tywanda Mclaurin-Jones, Maudry-Beverly Lashley, Vanessa Marshall Dec 2016

Minority College Women’S Views On Condom Negotiation, Tywanda Mclaurin-Jones, Maudry-Beverly Lashley, Vanessa Marshall

Publications and Research

This study utilized quantitative and qualitative methods to (1) investigate the relationship between frequency of condom use and negotiation strategies and (2) evaluate experiences with condom negotiations among sexually active, heterosexual, African American college women. One hundred female students from a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) completed a questionnaire that included the Condom Influence Strategies Scale (CIS) and participated in a focus group. An ANOVA was conducted to compare differences between never, inconsistent, and consistent condom users. Consistent condom users scored higher than never users on the “withholding sex” subscale of the CIS (4.88 vs. 3.55; p < 0.001) as well as endorsed items more strongly on the “direct request” subscale of the CIS (4.63 vs. 3.82, p < 0.05) than never users. A thematic analysis of open discussions identified overarching themes. Similarly, refusing sex and/or having direct communications with partner emerged as primary strategies. Threats to negotiation included deciding the “right timing” of discussion and having a previous history of sexual intercourse without a condom with their partner. Other key concepts that contribute to condom negotiation are the views that condoms are a male’s responsibility and stigma of women who carry condoms.

A Resident-Centered Dementia Care Staff Education Project To Reduce Challenging Behaviors At A Long-Term Care Facility, Margaret Huryk Dec 2016

A Resident-Centered Dementia Care Staff Education Project To Reduce Challenging Behaviors At A Long-Term Care Facility, Margaret Huryk

Seton Hall University DNP Final Projects

Frequent use of antipsychotic medication (APM) for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) persists at high levels in long- term care (LTC) facilities despite extensive evidence of modest clinical benefits, serious adverse effects, public health advisories and a national initiative to improve dementia care. There is a gap between best-practice evidence and actual clinical practice related to pharmacological and nonpharmacological care for persons with dementia (PWD) and BPSD and/or neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) of dementia. The literature shows that clinicians often ignore FDA (Food and Drug Administration) warnings, CMS (the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) initiatives and expert opinion …

Rit1 Gtpase Regulates Sox2 Transcriptional Activity And Hippocampal Neurogenesis, Sajad Mir, Weikang Cai, Douglas A. Andres

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Adult neurogenesis, the process of generating mature neurons from neuronal progenitor cells, makes critical contributions to neural circuitry and brain function in both healthy and disease states. Neurogenesis is a highly regulated process in which diverse environmental and physiological stimuli are relayed to resident neural stem cell populations to control the transcription of genes involved in self-renewal and differentiation. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing neurogenesis is necessary for the development of translational strategies to harness this process for neuronal repair. Here we report that the Ras-related GTPase RIT1 serves to control the sequential proliferation and differentiation of adult hippocampal neural …

Interpreting Typical Profi Le Of Transition Leaders – Case Croatia, Jasminka Samardzija Dec 2016

Interpreting Typical Profi Le Of Transition Leaders – Case Croatia, Jasminka Samardzija

Presentations and other scholarship

The main goal of this empirical research was to define those crucial leadership characteristics and behaviours of experienced individuals that confirmed them as leaders in the Croatian transition economy, based on success of their entrepreneurial or social affirmations. The basic research question was: What is the empirical base for classifying leaders into homogeneous groups? Results of the general characteristics cluster analysis singled out three clusters Moderates, Internalists and Globalists. Inductive approach and supporting intermediate cluster analysis based on subjective dimension “career development expectations” aligned leaders from the sample in two homogenous groups: Leaders who seek self-actualisation and Leaders who seek …

Sexual Behavior And Substance Use Among Women Across The Spectrum Of Sexual Orientation, Margaret M. Wolff Dec 2016

Sexual Behavior And Substance Use Among Women Across The Spectrum Of Sexual Orientation, Margaret M. Wolff

Dissertations and Theses

Background: Compared to non-sexual minority women, sexual minority women are at greater risk for substance use and abuse, sexual risk behaviors, and unplanned teen pregnancy; few studies measure differing associations by sexual orientation (e.g., identity, behavior, attraction) or discordance (e.g., heterosexually-identified women with female partners) components. Minority stress may explain sexual minority women’s health disparities; thus, as U.S. policies evolve to reflect growing acceptance of all sexual minorities, research should examine sexual minority women’s health risk behaviors using multidimensional constructs of sexual orientation.

Methods: Using the female sample of the 2002-2013 National Survey of Family Growth (Aims 1-2 n=25,523; …

Among several Puerto Rican algae, Sargassum sp. (SG) and Chaetomorpha (CM) showed the highest phenol adsorption capacity from aqueous solutions and were used in optimized adsorption batch experiments at room temperature. The effects of pH, adsorbent dose, phenol concentration, salinity and presence of interfering substances were evaluated. Initial solution pH exhibited a strong effect, mainly on the phenol aqueous chemistry; showing the maximum adsorption at pH 10. Sorption isotherm results were modelled according to the Langmuir, Tempkin and Freundlich equations. Isotherm modelling indicated a maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) of 82.10 and 17.7 mg of phenol per gram of SG and …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Soil quality is a critical link between land management and water quality. We aimed to assess soil quality within the Cedar Creek Watershed, a pothole- dominated subwatershed within the St. Joseph River watershed that drains into the Western Lake Erie Basin in northeastern Indiana. The Soil Management Assessment Framework (SMAF) with 10 soil quality indicators was used to assess inherent and dynamic soil and environmental characteristics across crop rotations, tillage practices, and landscape positions. Surface physical, chemical, and nutrient component indices were high, averaging 90, 93, and 98% of the optimum, respectively. Surface biology had the lowest component score, averaging …
