Working Toward Tetanus, Diptheria, Acellular Pertussis In Every Pregnancy: Protecting Our Most Vulnerable Population, Jessica Scott

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Pertussis is a highly contagious, acute respiratory illness caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. This illness can last for several months and is most notable by a paroxysmal cough on inspiration. Pertussis affects all ages and genders without discrimination but has a disproportionately high rate of morbidity and mortality in infants less than three months old. Protection from pertussis comes in the form of the tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine for adults and the diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine for children and infants. The first whole cell pertussis vaccine was introduced in the 1940s, which brought about a …

Student Works (2010-2019)

To meet the increasing demand for power generation due to the rapid growing urbanization and industrialization, Nigeria-the most populated country of Africa, is reactivating her coal industry as supplementary energy source. Maiganga coal-field is one of the recently discovered coal deposits in northeast Nigeria that is receiving great attention from the investors and entrepreneurs of coal energy. The deposit is also a prime target for power generation by Nigerian government, yet little is known about the basic properties of the deposit. In this study, radiological, trace elemental and petrographic analyses were performed in coal samples from Maiganga coal-field in order …

Cricket Meal As An Alternative To Fishmeal In Diets For African Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus) / Norhidayah Mohd Taufek, Mohd Taufek Norhidayah

Student Works (2010-2019)

In Malaysia, extensive farming of African catfish over the past decades has increased the utilization of fishmeal as the preferred aquafeeds owing to its highly nutritional properties. However, various pressures have been put on the fish farming industry to switch to more sustainable diet in order to reduce the dependency on fishmeal as the sole fish feed. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to evaluate the potential of cricket in diets for African catfish in terms of growth performance, nutrient and amino acids digestibility, immunostimulant properties and susceptibility to oxidative stress. Four feeding trials were conducted to determine the …

An Examination Of How Ratings Of Airlines Are Effected By Different Types Of Information: A Mediation Analysis, Abdullah Selim Ozyurek

Theses and Dissertations

Many dynamics directly or indirectly influence the decision-making process. An individual’s demographic features, such as gender, country of origin, and emotions are some of the dynamics. In the aviation domain, air passengers purchase their air travel tickets under those dynamics. The purpose of this study was to determine if the airline type, gender of participants, and participants’ country of origin had an effect on ratings of an individual’s perception of safety and willingness to fly, and which emotions had a mediating effect on this relationship. The study included Lufthansa Airlines and Turkish Airlines from Europe. The affect was the participants’ …

Sbar, Communication, And Patient Safety: An Integrated Literature Review, Kathryn R. Stewart Dec 2016

Sbar, Communication, And Patient Safety: An Integrated Literature Review, Kathryn R. Stewart

Honors Theses

Communication errors are a common cause of adverse patient safety events in the healthcare field. The Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation (SBAR) communication tool was introduced in 2002 to guide the communication of critical patient-care information. The purpose of this integrated literature review was to determine how the use of the SBAR tool during handoff of critical information affects communication between healthcare providers and patient safety. An integrated literature review approach was chosen due to the varying methodologies and multiple variables that have been used in the study of SBAR. The combined search terms of “SBAR”, “Communication”, and “Patient Safety” were entered into PubMed, …

From The Hallways To The Courtroom: Struggle For Desegregation In Chattanooga, Tennessee 1954-1986, Kelly R. Reed

Honors Theses

Although historians have lent a great deal of attention to the Southern struggle for public school desegregation in the wake of the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board decision, a comprehensive history of desegregation in Chattanooga, Tennessee has yet to be written. My research seeks to fill this gap by examining how desegregation operated in Chattanooga throughout the twenty-six year Mapp v. Board of Education of Chattanooga litigation. The first portion of this paper focuses predominantly on the school board’s lack of action between 1955 and 1960, the subsequent demand for action from the black community in the form of the …

The Impact Of Denominational Affiliation On Organizational Sense Of Belonging And Commitment Of Adjunct Faculty At Bible Colleges And Universities, Kimberly M. Pilieci Dec 2016

The Impact Of Denominational Affiliation On Organizational Sense Of Belonging And Commitment Of Adjunct Faculty At Bible Colleges And Universities, Kimberly M. Pilieci

Dissertations

The majority of faculty in higher education, including secular and biblical institutions, are adjunct faculty. The literature suggests that adjunct faculty are less effective and satisfied, and have weaker organizational sense of belonging (OSB) and affective organizational commitment (AOC). Denominational affiliation (DA) and religious commitment (RC) might mitigate the adjunct faculty’s feelings regarding OSB and AOC, but no research has pursued this set of questions. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of denominational affiliation and religious commitment on organizational sense of belonging and affective organizational commitment among the sample population, adjunct faculty at colleges and …

Update On School Searches, Charles J. Russo Dec 2016

Update On School Searches, Charles J. Russo

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications

School safety continues to present significant challenges for education leaders. Yet as educators work to maintain school safety, boards face a steady stream of litigation because officials have searched students suspected of putting themselves or others in danger. For example, students have been searched because they were suspected of bringing into schools such prohibited items as alcohol, weapons, and drugs.

Education leaders must develop up-to-date policies that ensure safety but that also comply with the Fourth Amendment’s prohibition of unreasonable searches and seizures.

Glutathione S-Transferase P In Glucose Homeostasis In Mice., Shubha Ghosh Dastidar Dec 2016

Glutathione S-Transferase P In Glucose Homeostasis In Mice., Shubha Ghosh Dastidar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

High calorie diets have fostered the current pandemic of obesity and comorbid conditions of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), systemic insulin resistance (IR) and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Hepatic glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are dysregulated in obesity, NAFLD and diabetes. The multifunctional GST pi isoform (GSTP) catalyzes acrolein metabolism and inhibits JNK (c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase). The purpose of this study was to test specifically whether GSTP deficiency disturbs glucose homeostasis in mice. Hepatic GST proteins were downregulated by short-term high fat diet (HFD) in wild type (WT) mice concomitant with glucose intolerance, increased hepatic JNK activation and protein-acrolein …

Evaluating Cardiovascular Dysfunction During Increased Activity And Exercise Rehabilitation Following Incomplete Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury In The Adult Rat., Kathryn A. Harman Dec 2016

Evaluating Cardiovascular Dysfunction During Increased Activity And Exercise Rehabilitation Following Incomplete Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury In The Adult Rat., Kathryn A. Harman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in whole-body dysfunction. While the majority of SCI research is focused on improving locomotor function after injury, cardiovascular (CV) disease continues to be the leading cause of morbidity in the chronic SCI patient population. The combination of injury-induced destruction of autonomic pathways, maladaptive plasticity within lumbosacral circuits, and the progressive decline in physical fitness contribute to the poor CV status of SCI individuals. Currently, there is little emphasis on implementing appropriately-timed acute rehabilitation techniques aimed to curtail maladaptive remodeling and improve CV outcomes. Furthermore, no pre-clinical or clinical studies have investigated the most appropriate time-course …

Distress, Circadian Rhythms, Immunity, And Survival In Presurgical Breast Cancer Patients., Whitney Nicole Rebholz Dec 2016

Distress, Circadian Rhythms, Immunity, And Survival In Presurgical Breast Cancer Patients., Whitney Nicole Rebholz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Women with breast cancer experience significant stress related to diagnosis and treatment, which may negatively affect physiology (e.g., circadian, endocrine, and immune) and contribute to cancer progression. Demographic (e.g., ethnic minority) and neighborhood factors can contribute to cancer-related stress. African American women with breast cancer experience more adverse disease pathology and earlier mortality; however, factors that explain these disparities rarely have been explored. It is hypothesized that psychosocial stressors (i.e., ethnicity, neighborhood stress, and cancerrelated stress) will be related to one another. Associations of psychosocial stress with physiological disruption are posited with regard to circadian, endocrine, and immune function. It …

Relationship Between Living Environment And First-Year Student Academic Achievement And Persistence., Shannon Deaton Staten Dec 2016

Relationship Between Living Environment And First-Year Student Academic Achievement And Persistence., Shannon Deaton Staten

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Student apartments that are privately owned and managed on the edge of higher education campuses have become a new paradigm in campus housing. Campus administrators consider privatized housing as a financial resource for providing updated housing facilities. There is minimal research regarding how students succeed academically if living in the privatized housing properties. Krause (2007) confirmed that research regarding how students living off campus succeed in college needs to be more fully addressed. This study was designed to contribute information of how students who live in off-campus privatized student housing apartments succeed academically. This information is important to campus administrators …

The Economic Impacts Of Undocumented Immigrants In The United States, Abdulaziz Alangari Dec 2016

The Economic Impacts Of Undocumented Immigrants In The United States, Abdulaziz Alangari

Honors Papers and Posters

There are about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., of which all are not granted a work permit. Thus, in order to survive, these immigrants seek jobs that do not require legal status but have wages significantly lower than minimum. In short, by having these immigrants work in low-wage jobs, the U.S. economy benefits by providing a diverse market to U.S. residents and thus creates a vast economy. My research paper will be talking about how the presence of undocumented immigrants is a significant factor in creating and shaping the diverse U.S. economy.

An American Reset – Safe Water & A Workable Model Of Federalism, Cara Cunningham Warren Dec 2016

An American Reset – Safe Water & A Workable Model Of Federalism, Cara Cunningham Warren

Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum

In 2015, at least 3.9 million Americans were exposed to lead in their drinking water at legally unacceptable levels. An additional 18 million Americans were at risk because their water systems were not in compliance with federal rules designed to detect the presence of lead contamination and to ameliorate its impact. What’s more, in 82 percent of the cases where the violation related to a health standard, no formal state or federal enforcement action was taken.

These startling statistics indicate that the Flint Water Crisis (“Flint Water”) is not an isolated event. In fact, it is a case study that …

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans Dec 2016

Anti-Tumor Mechanisms Of Hpv16 E6*, Whitney S. Evans

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

High-risk types of the human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are the causative agents of nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a significant number of head, neck, penile, vulvar and anal cancers. Like many other viruses with small genomes, HPV (~8 kb) utilizes numerous mechanisms to increase the capacity of its genome to encode the proteins necessary for successful completion of its infectious life cycle, including alternative splicing. Studies over the past few decades have focused intensively on the activities and roles of E6 proteins from HR-HPVs during the process of cellular transformation, clearly implicating E6 as a major transforming …
